    How is it possible to be as sharp at f/1.2? WOW !!!!!

  • @Teeb2023
    @Teeb2023 7 років тому +45

    That corner sharpness at f/1.2 on the full frame is staggeringly good. If only it had AF and a gasket, which I reckon they could've done and still make it cheaper than the Canon lens, it would have been a no-brainer.

  • @EDCGadgets
    @EDCGadgets 7 років тому +107

    Jesus, indeed you don't need to comment on the sharpness on full frame.
    How is this even possible at 1.2? Just wow.....

      Their 135/2.0 is also incredibly sharp. Samyang has been making really great products for a while now. It's only their old stuff that can be somewhat questionable at times.

    Hi Chris, hope I am not too late. That 6D MKI is a keeper. I have two of them and a pair of 5DMKIV's. I twice rented a 6DMKII due to double booking and the image quality is not inspiring.
    We continue to shoot weddings with the 5DMKIV's and 6DMKI's and I have zero desire to dump the 6DMKI even today. For stills, the 6D(MKI) is easily the most understated full frame canon body.
    The one and only nuance we find with both of our 6D bodies is that it can be heavy on blue saturation in the shadows of a white wedding dress for example. Something easily remedied in post.

    This is my favorite lens of all time. Bought this one because of your review. I use it for weddings and portraits on my Sony A7III. With focus peaking this lens shines. I've used the canon 1.2L and sigma 1.4 art and still i love this lens more. Sharper than the canon. More character than the sigma art. I'll buy this lens in a heart beat again and again. Thanks Frost.

    Dear Christopher,
    It is a real pleasure to watch one of your review videos again.
    For this Samyang lens, there is only one thing to say: WOW!
    It is surely superior than Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II. And I guess that it is a bit better than new Sigma 85mm f/1.4.
    Best regards.

    i don't think that your comments about the picture quality are biased. It really helps think about what aperture to shoot on, and your test based on a lab environment on specific aperture. And don't change how to review lenses based on what people thinks. Just do what you do. Your opinion is very nice :D

  • @Rationalific

    That "without any comment" part didn't last very long. But wow!... I was blown away! At least on full frame, that lens seems sharper at f/1.2 than many lenses at f/1.4 and f/1.8!

    Tried this lens today. It is almost same size as Sony G master 85mm and even Canon 85mm 1.2 L. The construction is great and focusing mechanism is smooth. However, there is a long focus throw, so you keep turning the focus ring forever. I had only 1 keeper out of 6 pictures I took with Canon 6D. Definitely a lens to take time when taking pictures. OOF areas are lovely as butter!

    To be that sharp at f/1.2 and have low distortion and chromatic aberrations, really makes this a great lens for sure! If it only had weather sealing and auto focus, it really would be even more excellent. I would say it would be nice to also have image stabilisation, but I know that can often compromise image quality a little with the extra internals needed for that to work.

    Please don't hold back your opinions or comments. Your comments make the review a review! You've tested more lenses than most. Withholding comments compromises your vast experience which the rest of us don't have. Your review style of consistent test shots with commentary but no data graphs is what makes you stand out IMO. If you want to cut the bias share the raw test shots so people can form their own opinions but please don't leave out yours. If we didn't trust your opinion we wouldn't watch.
    That said, thank you for the quality review. Lens aside, great shots as always.

      Q Is auto focus important to you? If so, then don't even consider this lens. Is weather sealing important to you? Then don't even consider the sigma or this lens. If you want a quality 85mm with great build quality, auto focus, and really nice optical quality at a price that's hefty but not crazy? Then get the sigma.

    • @Teeb2023
      @Teeb2023 7 років тому

      Jozo, would you say the Sigma is as sharp wide-open in the corners like the Samyang?

    • @shang-hsienyang1284
      @shang-hsienyang1284 7 років тому +3

      If ephotozine's measurement is accurate, the Samyang is sharper at f/5.6 (which is not something we would care because the LW/PH has already far exceeded 3000)
      The Sigma is sharper in the corner as f/1.2 and similar to Samyang in the center.

    • @ZZFilm
      @ZZFilm 7 років тому +4

      Anthony Rodemus Aaron Yang 👆 Yup! What Aaron said. When I look at lenses like this, I generally only think about them at the fstops I'll most probably be shooting them at most of the time. I'm not buying an f1.2 lens to shoot it at f11 since most lenses these days will look pretty dang similar at those stops. I weigh the pros and cons and my needs. I think in a pound for pound sense, I'd probably choose the Sigma unless I NEEDED a full time manual focus lens. I think Sigma has really fine fit and finish, really good optical quality, and nice modern tech touches and is only lacking in weather sealing.

    I can see why people would call "bias", because you seem to have a nice connection with Samyang. However, Samyang hasn't really made anything bad, so... yeah, they're going to do well in your reviews for the most part. Meh, they make good lenses, they get good ratings, people are going to have to get over that bias isn't a factor when the lenses are good.
    The only reason why I don't use Samyang is because of manual focus only; I can't do that. I really don't like using live view on the back panel, and focus confirmation on my D800 wasn't that great with the 14mm, and the 135mm I used.

    Thank you for the review, Christopher. What an impressive lens!
    I wonder how its MTF compares to the Zeiss Otus, the Sigma Art and the Zeiss Loxia.
    I'd say, the sole shortcomings of the lens are limited to:
    - Lack of autofocus.
    - Lack of IS
    - I expect, tree weight.
    Stupid of Samyang to forego the chance to produce these for mirrorless systems.

    Hi Chris, I have the feeling I might need your help if you have a quick moment for me. I have bought a Sony Alpha 7 II and wanted to adapt my Samyang 85mm 1.2 EF mount to it. Unfortunately I can only set the exposure time via the camera menu but NOT the aperture! When I adapted my Irix 15mm 2.4 Firefly onto the camera it worked. Currently I have a Metabones EF to E Mount adapter ( unfortunately it‘s also a wrong one, it only covers the APSC format on the sensor). Now my question: Can you tell me if the Samyang can be used properly on the Sony Alpha 7 II using the Sigma MC 11 or any other adapter? Did you check this out when you tested the Samyang? If I don‘t find an adapter that can operate the Samyang‘s settings I will have to give the Camera back because I bought it particularly for my third party non-stabilized primes with EF mount. Thanks in advance for your quick answer. God bless… Markus from Saxony in Germany 🙂

    I'm becoming a huge fan of Samyang/Rokinon lenses - recently purchased the 14mm f2.8 - what a magnificient piece of glass! I also own the 8mm fisheye, which has produced some of my favorite images over the years. That they are able to sell such lenses for so much less than big brands proves to me how overpriced Canon & Nikon are!

  • @dopamining7621

    Hey I love your reviews and turn to them often for purchases (recently got the Samyang 12mm full frame based on your review). I`ve just sold my EF 85 f1.2ii and was planning to get the new Sigma 85 f1.4, so I would love a review of that !
    I do have one small suggestion : your pronunciation of out-of-focus areas as `bo-kuh`; the Japanese word is romanized and pronounced as bokeh, or `bo-kay`.

      @skatertwig26 7 років тому

      ***** Great image quality on that lens. It is full frame though. High end APSC lenses for APSC bodies perform better. They are also smaller. For the most part.

    • @TheEquinoxeHD
      @TheEquinoxeHD 7 років тому +1

      For me the only point in using apsc lens is UWA or something like Sigma's f/1.8 zooms. Don't see any more advantages on using those. I find most fullframe lenses to work the same if not better on apsc.
      Apart for that, I'm not even sure if there are any apsc macro lenses, at least not for Nikon which I'm shooting.

    • @skatertwig26
      @skatertwig26 7 років тому

      ***** I know what you mean. A great lens will perform great no matter what. They will perform better on what ever sensor they are designed for though. I used to use some full frame lenses on APSC(Cause I had a full frame and APSC camera) But I found them heavier and that the high end APSC lenses performed amazing and were smaller. Like the Fuji 56mm 1.2 is one of the best lenses I shot with and it is APSC. Yeah Fuji has a 80mm APSC macro coming but not for a while I think. Tamron has some but not for Fuji. For me it is mostly size and price. Cause the 100mm with the adapter built in is super long haha That said I may still buy it for product shots haha

I have an old Sigma 85mm F1.4 very light, with AF : its only problem is having lateral CA showing as green and purple fringing. It's more work to use photoshop tool to remove those (or convert to black and white). When you are in front of a model, to say shoot lingerie, you can"'t do without AF because even if your eyes think it's in focus, you can miss the lace of fabric texture the designer want to show. It's not often that you have the luxury of time to do a lot of safety shots.

    Any idea what the T-stop is like on this lens? I would guess something like t/1.3 or 1.4 but that is just that - a guess.

    Great review Chris. Wonder how you'll judge the new Sigma 85mm...no f1.2, but autofocus and a comparable price to this Samyang might make up for it. Cheers!

    Thank you for the review. Great job. I'm astonished that they would neglect to include a depth of field scale on the lens. How difficult would it have been to include it? Although it seems like a great lens, I also wonder if the price jump in price is justified from its cheaper f1.4 version.

    Bit of a novice question perhaps. What makes images less sharp on APS-C? I would have thought that the smaller sensor is cropping out the extreme corners and should actually be sharper overall but you are reporting softer focus and more CA in the centre so I'm lost.

      The pixels on the sensor of an APS-C camera have to be much smaller which picks up optical problems and softness a lot more. It's about pixel density

    I have a Samyang 24mm f/1.4 EF on a Canon 7D. It bothers me that they still haven't updated much of their lens line. A lot of their lenses have the infinity mark miss aligned. The 24mm is sharp, it's well built, but only the Nikon version has a focus confirmation CPU. I mean, they are past the "very small optics company" it's 2017, make a mark II version of the lenses, I would pay another $100 bucks to have focus confirmation.

    Hi, this is a newbie question. When you mounted the lens on your m3 did it require some adapter or did it just fit?

      You will need an ef to ef-m adapter.

    Be good to compare it to the Canon 85mm f/1.4 L, which despite not going to f/1.2 is in my opinion better than the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L II.

    I had one for a month. Great sharpness but colours are too worm. No CA but Distortion was a little too much.
