15 years ago I had the Canon EF f/1.8 - I loved that lens, it was barely off the camera. It had a focus motor as loud as a helicopter but it was super sharp every time.

FYI: Diffraction makes a lens softer at small apertures. In the future, try to keep the aperture between f8-f11 for sharpness tests as past that, diffraction usually kicks in, softening the image.

I have been using the 35mm 1.4 Art lens for a few years now and it is one of my favourites. If I was going for another 50mm, as a Canon user, I would probably buy a second hand EF 50mm f1.2 but the 50mm Art would be tempting.

While I agree the Sigma is super lens and a great alternative to the Sony 50mm f1.2 especially when comparing prices. But I'd be curious how you find this Sigma stacks up to other 50mm closer in price to it. My only issue with it, is the size. I'd only use for dedicated shooting sessions, and not a carry-around lens.

I've just upgraded from the Canon RF50 f1.8 to the Sigma, I was looking at the Canon RF50mm f1.2 but as an amateur I really could not justify the cost of that lens, I'm VERY happy with my decision, on my R3 the image quality is superb and the autofocus is lightning fast, money well spent.

I own the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art lens and use it with my Canon R5. It's an incredible lens! I paid $570 for it. Among the best money I've spent on a lens to date, and I own a 70-200 2.8, an RF 100-500, A Sigma 14-24, a Sigma 60-600 Sport as well. Sometimes you have to sacrifice weight for quality, and this one does a little due to its heft, just like the 14-24 (another crazy good lens!) but it's well worth it. The end result is what it's all about, and this lens is stunning.

My favourite go to lens is the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens that I use for automotive photography. I use it on my Canon Eos 6d MkII & at first the histogram was way off. Someone suggested I get the USB dock to update the firmware & that fixed it as there was an update for my camera. The USB dock was a game changer as much as the lens was. What polariser are you using as the Urth one I have seems to work well but I feel it could sometimes be sharper

Often more times than not too much is said without any guidance, example or execution of how to go around what one is trying to achieve, if you catch my drift... Sigma lenses represent the midpoint between perfection and infuriation: their quality control is bad, but when the lenses are good, they are exceptionally so. The predecessor to this lens (50mm f/1.4 EX DG) was also an absolute gem of a portrait lens. I used it on weddings and it never, ever missed a beat, producing the best photos I have ever captured.

    Sigma all the way!
I got my Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro years ago, brand new, as it was up there with lenses twice its price and I was on a budget. Of course, nowhere near L lenses costing many times more but very decent still, especially at that MSRP of 219 Euros including a hood and soft pouch. Now I got a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for the same exact reason. I love them both. I've been looking for a proper 50mm now as I really hate my EF 50mm 1.8 II "nifty fifty" and have been drooling over this Sigma and the Sony APS-C lineup as well. I might even get a used Sony A6000 series body just to pair it with the 30 and 56mm Sigma 1.4 lenses for anything other than my bird photography setup on the 7D Mark II as that will be a very compact combo that I can always have with me.
P.S. Scotland is incredibly beautiful! I have to visit.

Nikon, as well as Canon have prohibited 3rd party lens manufacturers access to their mirroless mounts, which is why from a mirroless perspective Sony has the best availability for made for mirroless lenses from Tamron, Sigma & Samyang. It's that flexibility that has kept me on the Sony system. The only thing I need to consider now is trading in my A9's & A7iii's for two Sony A1's, or step up my lens collection. Hopefully Nikon & Canon will see sense and allow 3rd party lens support.

I have the sigma 28mm f1.4, incredible lens (my favorite) sharp corner to corner wide open with beautiful rendering that preserves the delicate tonal ranges and colors. I often pair it with a tiny sigma 45mm f2.8 which hasa quality to its rendering, not quite the love at first site of the 28mm, but still amazing. It is soft in the corners at only 2.8 (sharp when closed down).
Been feeling into the 40mm f1.4 art, but that lens is even heavier (although weather sealed). The 28mm is fine for weight, but the 40 might be over the top? Your video has me taking a look at the 50 - thanks!

I ended up getting the 40mm as well and love them both, although the 28 is my favorite of the two for my typical use. AF for me works well, including the 40mm with our very fast moving and agile dog, keeping in mind that some of this is camera dependent. I read something in a review a while back with some people who were having trouble with the lens on dslr nikon cameras (lens calibration), although that would not affect you with z mount.

I think the 35mm fits my needs better, but it's soooo lovely!

I had this lens and replaced it with the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8, which had a better contrast, but worse bokeh, and later with the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4, which is optically better wide open than the Sigma and the Zeiss 55. But I have compared the Sigma with a super expensive Zeiss Otus and from f/4 upwards the Sigma is better than the Otus. So at higher appertures it is a stellar lens. Wide open is very good but not excellent. I use other sigma lenses which are brilliant, like the 35mm DG DN, the 85mm (first version) and the 24-70. All are one of the best in class.

But the Art series is a lot of money and it's heavy! I was hoping for more insight on the smaller/lighter 50mm lenses.

that Sigma's 50 is known for years now but I would go for the 40mm f1.4 Art lens I own the 20mm f1.4 Art and the 105mm f1.4 @Rt Bokehmaster

Good infomercial, thanks. I would say you need to add "for the price" when labeling the cheap Sigma as the market's best. For sure, it does not beat the new GM 50/1.2 which is insanely great. And smaller. And lighter. :)
