Stripped of everything that could be important to you, the only thing keeping you on your feets being fear - fear of the punishment that could come. As an officer, you atleast have a chance to earn some Reputation and climb the Ranks or settle on a specific job you like, you decide your own fate to a certain degree. As a Stormtrooper, you're just human meat ment to overrun your enemy by sheer numbers, ment to be expendable, ment to die.

Guys , let's give it to the actor who plays the commander here, this scene is iconic because he actually nailed it.
Yep especially since it wasn't James Earl Jones booming voice he was hearing in the scene. The original suite actors real voice was far less menacing. But when they mesh his performance with Jones voice, wow!

Not gonna lie, Darth Vader was actually pretty respectful, professional and reasonable here. He set expectations, addressed setbacks and got information for his superior.
He’s only rude to generals who got to higher positions in the fleet because of their connections. I assume this commander is actually deserving of his position and Vader knows that he’s being completely honest about his men and knows the emperor is asking too much
@@thedevilandgodareamongus9792 Vader generally doesn't put up with failure for any reason, but he thought the Death Star was a waste of time in the first place, and even he knows the Emperor is being unrealistic in his expectations. He doesn't exactly sympathize with the commanding officer and still strongarms him and his men into compliance, but he at least *understands* why they are behind schedule.
Vader is harsh and even cruel, but he's not unreasonable.

At this point, Vader's kinda conflicted, but he wasn't just a Saturday sitcom villain who chokes everyone for no reason. He always had a cordial side, and Vader's Fist loved serving under him.

It took 18 years to build the first Death Star.
It took nearly 3 years to get it more than halfway done and the weapon operational.
Considering the rush they are in and the fact the new Death Star is bigger, the Empire has some pretty impressive engineering capacity.
Samurai Momo they probably had prefabricated spare parts meant for the first Death Star they likely used for the construction of the second which sped things up. Two, the technology behind the first Death Star was proved so no need for lengthy research and development. Three they likely had spare kyber crystals meant for first Death Star for replacements and used them for the second, no need to mine more.

Well its true Vader actually kills you on the spot if you screw up, hence the line "not as forgiving, as I am." But the Emperor will make you want death's hands to engulf you after he's done with you.

I think it is simply a dark joke alluding to the fact that Vader, as we have met him in the previous two movies, is anything but forgiving. If anything, it tells us that Vader actually is not the big bad -- the Emperor is EVEN WORSE!
***** I think these words just illustrate Vader's wit and sarcasm. Remember how he choked Admiral Ozzel's because of his blunder in front of other officers? They are all creeped out. He showed little/no forgiveness. Later he says 'The Emperor is not ''forgiving'' as I am' to intimidate them.

+Mark Mullins Yes, he was. But that's an argument from a possibly false premise. :) Vader's purpose is to keep the workers on schedule (by threatening them), not to show them how good he is. Even from the music all you feel is fear/evil/no good.

That is my favourite line from their conversation. I love that Jerjerrod confided to Vader that he thought the Emperor was being unreasonable. It would seem Imperial officers are comfortable saying things about the Emperor to Vader that they wouldn't say to his face. I wonder what Vader's response would've been if the Emperor wasn't on his way oversee the construction. Vader might be harsh, but at least he's fair.

Amazing what a budget increase can do between films lol. But in all seriousness, I thought the same thing and just figured it was likely due to having a new suit and the film crew having better cameras and editors. Very interesting watching the quality change in between all these movies, since each one has a bit of a time gap in between them.

Ever since I was a kid I always thought this was a good scene to show how evil and twisted the emperor was. It does a good job of setting up the Emperor as we already knew Vader is a dangerous villain, yet he, self-admittedly, is not as harsh or strict as the Emperor.
Cold, smooth, direct. Somehow Vader seems more menacing than an edge lord who screams, throws temper tantrums and smashes his own equipment.
Man how did this oversight happen. Its almost as if kylo ren is supposed to be a screaming, temper tantrum throwing half child who is angry because he was almost killed by his own family despite not having done anything

Vader was someone who gave in to the darkness for power and saving others after he failed he completely gave into the darkness basically without regrets (until Luke Brough him back) and Kylo ren on the other hand is a young adult or post teen who was almost killed in his sleep by his own family. He has nothing and just wants recognition and a meaning and unlike Vader he is supposed to be on the tipping point all the time like "are you a good dude now or still decide to be a bastard with the patience of a goldfish"

Something that's interesting is that even without Vader's last line here you can tell that as terrifying as Vader is the Emperor is feared far more. Jerjerrod lets himself break down a little and complain to Vader about how monumental his task is but the moment Vader says the Emperor's coming he changes his tune entirely.
Yep. It establishes how big of a threat the Emperor is. Jerjerrod might be willing to complain to Vader about things, but once Vader brings the Emperor into it, he immediately falls in line.

In Legends the Emperor executed an indispensable scientist several times for failing him and brought him back with the help of the Dark Side and a clone body.
In one case he woke in his new body and could see how the bugs that killed him were still devouring his body.
When the New Republic executed him for his role in assisting genocide he had only one request. That they do it right. He was actually relieved as long as he wasn‘t forced to come back... again.

The good in Vader was evident in this scene.Thats why he was so forgiving.
He also doesn’t want to be there considering he’d rather be looking for his son and he was never a fan of Death Stars to begin with... probably thinking “dude shut up and let’s get this done otherwise none of us are ever going on vacation” he seems so over it by this point.
As scary as Vader is, I’d still rather work for him than work another day in retail.

this scene perfectly exemplifies the enormous gap in quality of filmmaking between then and now. just how terrified the officers are of their superiors, despite being loyal dedicated servants. there's no spectacle, no hollywood bs, just a conversation and some fantastic acting. plus the music manages to be enormously intense without being distracting. the original trilogy was a beautiful example of solid honest storytelling. fuck the sequels
Filmmaking will only return to what it was when we stop letting entertainment companies like Disney buy everything. Disney isn’t in the business of making good movies, they’re in the business of collecting people’s money. Bob Igor could give two shits if people like the new movies as long as they paid to go see them. The rest of the people involved in the actual making of the films are just focusing on collecting brownie points from social media in order to keep their jobs in Hollywood.

I actually found the dialogue to be very weak in the prequels and the original trilogy, yet the storyline far superior to the sequels.

@PaperBagHead if everything I said was wrong then that means you think that the prequels had good dialogue and the sequels had a good story line. My opinion was that the prequels had a great story line but sucked with dialogue between characters sometimes coming across very cringe. The never sequels had a stronger dialogue between the characters but the individual characters where all horrible making for a failed storyline. I hated Rey, I also hated how they ruined Luke.
I love that he says his men are working as fast as they can, and then as soon as he finds out the Emperor himself is coming he says "we'll double our efforts". I guess Vader DID find some extra ways to motivate the men.

Props to Michael Pennington, the Actor of Jerjerrod. He perfectly shows the fear and dread he feels towards Vader --- and then ups it to 11 when he hears the emperor is coming too.
It's been a while since I saw this, but this might be his only scene in the film too
I always found it fascinating how mellow Vader is in this movie. Like, he doesn’t actually do anything evil- no choking, no killing anyone (except the Emperor). Even in this conversation he’s pretty reasonable and doesn’t resort to violence. I think it’s meant to show how emotionally conflicted he is- he’s just too distracted to be going around doing his usual devious stuff.
It was a conscious decision to make his redemption palatable to the audience. Initially Vader was going to be as hard as he was in Empire, and his death would have been tackling the Emperor into a lava pit to save Luke. Once it was decided his redemption would be less ambiguous the choice was made to make him more sympathetic.
Actually, Vader does Force-choke Jerjerrod (the Grand Moff shown in this clip) in a deleted scene.
A combination of him once again being put on a leash and having big emotional conflicts. Luke was spot on that much as he may try to deny it, Anakin Skywalker never truly dies, he just needed a reason to come back into the light, and having finally confronted Luke in the previous film that reason finally came for him... not that it was an easy path anyways

I love how Vader is reasonably empathetic here to Jerjerrod's situation; Emperor gives him a task that would be easily carried out if he had the proper resources to do so making it an impossible task in the given time. Vader clearly knows this hence why he doesn't straight kill him unlike if Palpatine were the one confronting Jerjerrod. You honestly gotta feel bad for the dude, he probably realized in this moment he picked the wrong job.

The Officer seems to trust Vader on a level I just noticed, he knows Vader is not to mess with and does not like to be disappointed, but also does not like the Death Star as it uses too much resources, which is why he whispers he needs more men to Vader in a hushed tone, revealing his reason as to why it's taking so long
I love when Vader arrives and that version of Imperial March which was used in the Dark Side ending cut scene on Battlefront.

This one scene alone is able to eclipse anything the Sequels have to offer, and it did it in 1 minute 26 seconds.

I like how the commander forgets himself for a split second, and whispers inwards 'i need more men', almost as though to seek some empathy from Vader of all people. Though funnily enough, Vader offers the best reassurance that the dark lord can, advising 'the Emperor... Is not as forgiving as I am ". Lol Damn

Bevel Lemelisk, lead designer of the Death Star, was executed by Sidious having him Eaten Alive by piranha beetles as punishment for overlooking such a massive design flaw... and then brought back to life with a clone body and Sith Alchemy because despite this mistake Lemelisk was too much of an asset to throw away. Sidious proceeded to make a point of executing and resurrecting Lemelisk every time something went wrong with the Death Star II's construction, with a new and unique method of execution every time.
The punishments we learn about are the aforementioned Piranha Beetles, getting Thrown Out the Airlock, lowered inch by inch into a vat of molten copper ("It was what the smelter used that day."), and being chained in a drive tube while the engine was slowly powered up. This happened six times, meaning there were two more punishments that we never learned the details about. When the New Republic finally got ahold of Lemelisk and sentenced him to death, his request to the firing squad was that they "do it right this time." At least Vader is business-like about killing you; Sidious will make sure you suffer.
It gets even worse when you read various stories from the old Expanded Universe which showed that Vader would kill you for failing him, but the Emperor would not only kill you in any number of agonizing ways - as Lemelisk could attest - he would also kill your entire family. One story from Tales of the Bounty Hunters took it even further by implying that even if Vader would off underlings for many reasons, he always had a definite reason for killing them, but the Emperor... he would straight-up kill for pleasure, something Vader never did.
The new Star Wars Expanded Universe has this in the form of Operation Cinder, a "contingency plan" ordered by Palpatine in the event of his death. Far from being some form of retribution against the Rebellion, instead it's one final act of spite against the entire galaxy and the Empire, using special climate satellites to devastate hundreds of worlds, ranging from Rebel-held systems to loyal Imperial planets, all for the simple "crime" of being unable to protect him and, in Palpatine's twisted, self-absorbed mind, proving itself unworthy of existence.

One of the best character introductions of all time. Having Vader, one of the most ruthless villains in cinema, say that the emperor is “not as forgiving as I am,” is enough to instantly make him the most terrifying dude in the universe without even being on screen.

Compared to Palpatine, Vader is downright gracious.
To be honest, Palpatine actually _is_ more forgiving than Vader.
While he's more of a schemer, deriving sadistic satisfaction from subjugating the entirely galaxy, the Emperor is maintaining the illusion that he's a harmless old man. Palpatine is not the type to execute his own officers for failure - he's just usually content to let Vader do so.
Slignerd I don't see how. We all saw how he felt and dealt with Luke when he refused to join him. We all saw the "I have OTHER uses for you" speech with Maul. If you want bring Legends into it, we all read what he did to a certain Bevel Lemelisk when he found out about the Death Star's flaw. True, not in canon but not beyond him. He is that cruel and sadistic.
I still say Vader was better to deal with than Palpatine. With Vader, you screw up, he just kills you and it's all over. With Palpatine, he will take the time to make sure you suffer before you die, and thats if he's in a good mood. He might let you live which in some ways is worse than dying

Ultimately it's a difference of approach - both are extremely cruel, but while Vader is more straightforward, Palpatine is more of a mastermind, scheming to get his way and rarely losing his composure.

I love how, despite the fear Vader spreads, even on his own men, in the end, he cares about his men, even those who make mistakes (not in the case of Ozzel, Piette and the "lack of faith" guy).

Darth Vader was reasonable enough and probably liked the officer enough to give him a Heads Up about the Emperor's pending visit, in addition to giving him the motivation to speed up preparations and assist him with it on more than just the double.

I cannot get enough of James Earl Jones voice as Darth Vader. Just so powerful.
That´s my FAVORITE scene of all. The movie is such a masterpiece, especially with the sound effects. Darth Vader and the Emperor talk in a sophisticated, philosophical manner... It´s so, SO GREAT. I can´t get enough of it.
This scene does a perfect job of conveying just how big of a threat the Emperor is. For most of the scene, Moff Jerjerrod has little issue talking back to Vader when he brings up the lack of progress with the Death Star's construction, but the MOMENT Vader says that the Emperor will be arriving, Jerjerrod immediately folds to Vader's demands. Plus, Vader's claim that the Emperor is not as forgiving as he is makes it clear that, should Jerjerrod fail to get his shit together, he is in for a WORLD of pain. Keep in mind, Vader had no problem choking people to death for failure in the last film, so the fact that he describes the Emperor as even worse than he is, especially when failure is involved, really cements just how bad a guy the Emperor is and keeps us on the edge of our seats.
I never saw star wars and find this video by chance and I'm impressed by the dialog, damm Darth Vader is an eloquent bastard.

This isn't speculation, either, he literally did this in Legends and could probably do it in Canon, too.
In one of the novels it has Jerjerrod's POV when the Emperor arrives. While he's disappointed the Emperor doesn't praise him for the completion of the second Death Star, he decides that the fact he wasn't punished is reward enough for him lmao.

In Legends, Palpatine had the original architect of the Death Star executed for failing to secure such a huge weakness, then brought back to life in order to improve upon the design and rinse and repeat. Each new failure carried a different method of execution; blown out of an airlock, fed to piranha beetles, lowered feet first by inches into a vat of molten copper, sealed in a room of acidic mist and chained to the interior of a drive engine as it was turned on.
Vader wasn't joking when he said this. At least with him you'll die quickly; Sidious will make you suffer.

when vader said "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am." i see him as a father figure to hes allience in the army base, like he understands mistakes happen and it can come to a solution, but the emperor...forget it, hes too dark and blind to the darkside and is willing to even kill hes own apprentince just for lack of focus

I like how this scene subtly hints @ how the Empire is starting to fail. The officer’s pleading for more men & the Empire unable to provide. The Empire is a sinking ship but they’re clinging on to the bitter end like any authoritarian government.
The entire freakin' galaxy at their disposal and this project is the Emperor's top priority and he can't get him more men.

Those of us in the construction business could always relate to this. When the boss from the main office visited a job it was usually because of a problem. We used to say Lord Vader is coming to the job today.
Love how Vader is portrayed here; harsh but resonable.
You can tell they've got problems with building and maintenance of the death star. I mean just look at that floor, it needs a proper clean and polish. It should be mopped at least every night. Just look at the smear marks all over it. If I was in charge of housekeeping I'd be absolutely embarrassed. I hope they get it sorted before the Emperor comes or he'll get force chocked like Michael Hutchence.
Oh man, I'm a supervisor in maintenance, and I can tell you that I always have to allocate someone to cosmetic detail at work because the people in the expensive three piece suits that come to inspect will go ape shit if the outside doesn't look good, and they will not care about the actual work that gets done.
I'd use my high speed buffer on that floor and some Snap Back.

This scene is such perfect buildup for the Emperor’s introduction. Vader kills subordinates for failing him without a second thought. When he says the Emperor is less forgiving, it’s the ultimate *oh shit* moment.

I spent so many years thinking Jerjerrod was the same guy on the first Death Star whose lack of faith was found disturbing by Vader. In my mind, when Vader said "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am" I thought he was reminding this guy that he could have killed him, but didn't.
definitely one of my favourite scenes. Plus that end Imperial March just sounds so good. it's like a royal imperial march of sorts.
