The Non-Canon Expert looks at the reason why Admiral Piett wasn't executed by Darth Vader for his failure in allowing the Millennium Falcon to escape to hyperspace from Bespin in The Empire Strikes Back, describing the long history between them and also Piett's own understanding of his survival, which would ultimately turn him into an Imperial Navy Legend instantly!
This is a Legends story for Admiral Firmus Piett and Darth Vader with information from within a number of Legends sources, but primarily "The Essential Guide to Warfare." I hope that you enjoy it!

Older Imperials like Moden Canady from TLJ are probably being sidelined, and I hope to god that this entire approach will come back to bite the FO in the a**. First Order supporters also have a bit of a Lost Cause attribute to them, where the distance 30 years provides has allowed them to whitewash the Empire while demonizing the New Republic, leading to a "grass is always greener" situation.

It should be noted that the failings of Ozzel and Piett in the Empire Strikes Back differ greatly in magnitude. Ozzel made a tactical error in deploying Death Squadron deep into the Hoth system. This alerted the rebels to the Imperial presence before the Empire could organize a plan of attack. The rebels then had time to organize a defense and retreat while the Empire had no time to gather more intel on the base before their assault. Vader immediately recognized the boneheadedness of Ozzel's maneuver and made an example of him for his lack of foresight. Ultimately, Ozzel's blunder resulted in most of the rebels escaping.
Piett's failure was minor in comparison or perhaps nonexistent. Imperial personnel on Bespin (possibly under Piett's chain of command) did what they could to insure that the Millennium Falcon's hyperdrive was disabled. Unfortunately, things did not go to plan as the hyperdrive was fixed mid-flight and the ship escaped. Sure it had Luke on board, but it would be useless to punish Piett for a failure that was outside of his control. Besides, what's one rebel ship escaping compared to the WHOLE of the Rebel Alliance escaping.

    • @SkiddyGaming
      @SkiddyGaming 5 років тому +75

Yes, Piett was a highly competent officer who just got saddled with unfortunate situations repeatedly. His "failure" at the Battle of Endor too was not really his own, as he was given effectively no control over his fleet, which the Emperor had explicitly ordered was to hold position and not move to engage, no attacking, turning his capital ships into sitting ducks. Had Piett had the freedom to maneuver his ships as usual, or select his fleet composition, I imagine the Battle would've ended rather differently. As it was, he was stuck with what the Emperor gave him, told not to move, and essentially just made to command his giant fleet as though it were nothing more than an object of intimidation with no real combat purposes beyond getting the enemy to stay away...
Most of the Empire's loses come down to these ridiculously ill convinced plans to impractically test super weapons or to the imperials broken naval doctrine relative to their opponents TBH

It's also worth remembering that it wasn't just that he disagreed with Piett on what the probe droid found. When Vader came over and declared they'd found the rebels, Ozzel tried to respectfully disagree with Vader the way you might respectfully disagree with your boss when you think he's a moron. It is plausible that this belief that Vader was wrong directly influenced his mistake at Hoth - why bother taking precautions when it's just a wild goose chase, right? And then there's the fact that it was General Veers who made the report. You'll note that at no point in the movie does Ozzel make a report directly to Vader until Vader calls him. Contrast that to Piett who gave reports directly to Vader every single time. It's possible that it was legitimately Ozzel's place is on the bridge and it was inappropriate for it to not be given in person rather than through an internal comm, but it's also possible that those are excuses so he doesn't have to confess his mistake to Vader directly.

Luke denied, and jumped. Vader could’ve stopped him dead in his tracks with the Force, but he didn’t, so when Luke got away, I think Vader didn’t exactly... care, but not like he didn’t CARE but he was willing to let it slide in order to see if Luke would eventually “come to his senses”(from Vader’s perspective)

If he had control over the battlefield and formation, he would have won, the advantage was overwhelmingly on the Death Squadron's side - but you don't go against Sheev.
Instead, when put between an operational DS and a fleet, the Rebels bumrushed the fleet, the situation became an absolute clusterfuck, and then the Executor got focused.

The order Admiral Piett had was to not engage the Rebel fleet while the Death Star was shooting the Rebel ships one by one, but should the Rebel fleet engage them (presumably in order to escape), then revert back to the old way. Even then, the Rebels were on the ropes, thus took the risky bet of focusing on the Executor, knowing the Empire fleet would fall into chaos if they succeeded in destroying it. Then, the Rebels destroyed the Executor by sheer luck, the Empire fleet lost all cohesion and what remained decided it was not worth keep fighting when the Death Star was destroyed as well.

Vader didn't kill Piett in Empire because his encounter with his son had already started to change him. In ANH Vader doesn't kill any of the imperial officers, but the opening crawl of ESB tells us that he's obsessed with finding Luke Skywalker. Between ANH and ESB Vader had discovered Luke's identity, and he became desperate for a reckoning. In his eyes he had already vanquished Anakin Skywalker, but Luke's existence left a loose end to reconcile. The film is nuanced and brilliant, and any expanded universe explanation that explains this otherwise has clearly missed the nuance.

I mean, you spend all this time hunting down your son, failure after failure, then you finally manage to get a perfect situation to capture him, all your work and obsession leading up to this moment, and then Luke goes "nah fuck this ima die now" and essentially attempts to end his life when he falls off that thing at the end of their duel. I remember having a conversation with my dad about Ozzel's execution about a year ago, he came up with this theory that Ozzel wasn't as incompetent as he's portrayed, and was wrongly executed.
The theory was that with the probe droids was found by the rebels, they were on alert, long before the imperial fleet showed up. With Vader assuring the admiral that Hoth was the system, and that Luke was there, Vader was thinking more of finding Luke, rushing the fleet to the system, and causing Ozzel to 'come out of hyperspace too close to the system'.
The theory went on a bit further, but the rest is a bit far-fetched, but stated that Vader executed Ozzel to cover his own failure (alerting the rebels to imperial incursion with a probe droid).
Hearing that Ozzel was hated and known for getting his position via influence and connection does make me believe he was less valuable than officers like Piett, but I choose to believe that he wasn't "As clumsy as he is Stupid".

So - the formula of surviving Vader was in fact relatively easy - dont be afraid of him (as that is pointless), dont be completly incompetent, and do your very best. And well still you need a bit of luck not to fail at something which pisses him off.
With Ozel Vader was not angry... it was just execution for utter incompetence. Cold and calculated. That was unlikel for people like Veers, Piett or Thrawn... there it would have to be either stroke of Vaders anger, or actual treason.

Vader spared Piett because he was slightly changed by the encounter with Luke. He was pensive rather than raging, experiencing the first tiny inklings of conflict and doubt. Sparing Piett was a baby step back from the dark side, the very beginning of his redemption.

Piett's sunken eyes, as he expected Vader to kill him at the end of ESB, were a brilliant touch. The actor did an amazing job. It's really cool to think of these Imperial officers as individuals with unique backstories and relationships to authority. This revelation also shows that Vader had some restraint and that the Imperial officer corps wasn't just a monolithic pool of high-level temps that he saw as interchangeable and disposable.

There was another instance in Piett's early career during the early days of the Rebellion. Where he created the protocols for engaging Rebel Ships; he suggested that imperial ships should only engage the rebel ships if the Empire outnumbered the Rebels 3-1 after a squad of X-Wings wipe out the TIE Fighters and cripple his Star Destroyer. This suggested was ignored by Piett's superiors, but caught Vader's attention.

In the ROTJ final fight, Vader seemed to have forgotten how to use his lightsaber. He doesn't even try to attack Luke. His defense is stupid and incoherent. And he ends up falling on his a*s with his hand chopped off. That was presumably the moment when Darth Vader ceased to exist. And then the one who clumsily rised and stood next to Palpatine sadly picking his nose and watching Luke being tortured, was none other but Anakin Skywalker.

I like how Darth Vader could just "instantly promote officers" to the next highest rank, even though Vader wasn't part of the Imperial military. Vader didn't need to check with Palpatine, even though the latter relied on his military officers for counter-insurgencies to a much greater extent than he relied on Vader. Palpatine actually ordered Vader not to challenge or obstruct Grand Moff Tarkin. I'm certain that if Thrawn had been "available" during the Original Trilogy, that the Emperor also would have told Vader to stay out of Thrawn's way.
