I was in Bermuda last year and we took a private tour of the island. Our guide, a man in his late 60’s, was wearing a yellow gold Daydate 36 black dial that his wife gifted him on his 45th birthday. @planecrashcorner7283 I generalize because not only do I live in a major city in California, but I travel up and down the state for work. In many of the major cities, SF, LA, Sacramento, San Diego..etc., I am very careful. Even the smaller cities I've been, Lodi, Bakersfield, Stockton, I'm still very careful. Wow. Yesterday I literally considered messaging you Bruce for an update on this beauty! You answered my questions. I love this watch and your perspective. It's my grail and I've looked at other brands closely as well. But the President speaks to me as few others. When I started my career in the 1980s, top executives treated themselves to the Day-Date. I honestly thought it was douchy but years and maturity have clearly altered my view. Luxury, if one is fortunate and so choses, is a delightful treat and regardless of reason, is a personal choice that I respect. For me, I rarely wear my Rolex DJs exposed. My two-tone is a personal satisfaction experience and I love to take a peek under the long sleeves. That's just me - so should I be fortunate to find the perfect 118238, (my price comfort range), I believe I would not expose it. I do laugh though at your qualifier one year later; "almost" a one-watch guy. Ha. You "were" a one-watch fella when your classy DD first appeared! Congrats and thanks for the great segment! And it's cool that you're indifferent to scratches.
IT'S A TIMELESS CLASSIC. I wear mine all the time and very few people notice it. It's really comfortable and just makes me feel good to know that I have a grail watch on my wrist. I have other rolex and omega and even solid gold patek.... This is my favorite. Enjoy. Thanks for the great review
I have a gold Rolex, I wear it at home and enjoy it for myself. The risk of wearing a fine piece in public dealing with the atmosphere we’re living in America with all this crime isn’t worth the risk.
Even here in FL, the Day-Date carries business implications. Had a client that wore a Day-Date for some 40 years. During Covid, I needed to raise my prices. He threw an absolute fit. Next time I saw him , he was wearing an 80s TAG. Why? It's hard to pretend you can't afford modest price increases while simultaneously showing everyone how wealthy you are. It also works in the reverse. Harder to justify your pricing to clients when you're flossing wealth in their face. It's a catch-22.
Ehh, I would expect someone who was very good with money to negotiate pretty hard and push back against any price increases - it's just good business sense.
@@LanguagesWithAndrew Yup - the reason he has wealth is because he is upset with paying more. All the brokies I know like to pretend price hikes don't effect them for image and go deeper into debt.
That is a stunning watch. Anyone would wear the day date with pride. The current climate around high end watches and mugging makes me nervous. I have several watches the I absolutely love. The fact that I have become too nervous to wear them in public has diminished the pleasure of ownership. Your day date is a true work of art. I’m glad you have given your watch the wrist time it deserves.
Fair point. To me, it's special occasions or always long sleeves or known environments first. Second, insurance. Traveling, it stays home unless someone is getting married.

A great one year review of a truly iconic watch. Bruce, you got me started on my luxury watch journey and now I want a gold Rolex. Thinking very seriously of picking up a 36 mm Day Date as my exit watch. I want to be an old man with a gold Rolex on his wrist :) Cheers!
Wait...what? trust me... people notice! It makes me nervous, how much people notice and comment or ask questions about it. Be careful where you go and where you wear it...Did I Mention I live in Los Angeles County!
Sold my Day-Date after a few months, too uncomfortable, still didnt't fit even with the 1/4 link, too top heavy, bracelet is insanely sensitive, caseback surface on the wrist is too small, so it hurts after some time. I only go for sportsmodel when I go for gold now, better fit and oysterclasp helps a lot, also in the summer (easylink).
It's so not my kind of watch, but I enjoyed your presentation very much. It's great to see an ultimate purchase like this being used as daily wear. What you said about wrist time is true - my Rolex was my main wear until it was knocked off my wrist by a Tudor 4 years ago. Currently my only gold wristwatch is a JLC dress watch, which is where I kinda believe gold best belongs.
My Tudor BB Bronze Boutique Edition is among my favorites. I meticulously keep patina away. It looks like a soft red gold. A beauty and the price point is quite attractive.

Great assessment. You’re right about the dd vs other brand’s full gold watches. Over the years I’ve slimmed down my collection to almost only Rolex, and that was based on just wrist time. Not because they are Rolex, just because they are my favourites as pieces. The Sub is my daily work wear. GMT Batman for weekends and travel. The Datejust for a suit and/or slimmer cuff. The only other watch I want, despite no bracelet is a JLC Calendar.
You can avoid that only negative by getting the white gold day date 40, I have mine with the olive green dial that I bought in white gold to tone down the flashiness and it has been a joy to wear basically everywhere, I rarely use the rest of my Rolex heavy collection.
Something about “unoptimal” sounded so strange to me after using “nonoptimal” my whole life but it turns out its a real word. Solid video, nice to learn something new.
Just got my first watch from my local AD!! Two tone yellow gold DJ 41 with fluted bezel and champagne diamond dial. Couldn’t be happier with it. One day I’ll have the watch you have. That’s the pinnacle of class.
It’s beautiful, but a $40k solid gold watch is not versatile. Perhaps you’re a little out of touch with us mere mortals who aren’t filthy rich? 😅 Still enjoy your channel, Bruce, but come on…
As an owner of this exact 228238, I understand the versatility statement. It’s a reference to this watch’s design and style to be worn with a variety of outfits, whether in a suit, or semi-formal, casual, or even ultra casual with t-shirt and shorts, this watch works. As opposed to say a more “dressier” watch with say a leather band, thin case, that would be better worn with formal attire.
I don’t consider myself wealthy by any stretch, never mind “filthy rich”, and as an owner of this exact reference/configuration I will say, it is much more versatile than I thought it was going to be going in. That said, a YG watch is still a YG watch at the end of the day, so no, it’s not going to be as versatile as, say, a BB58, but I don’t think that is what Bruce was implying.
By experience - do not wear any gold watch while traveling. It is not just for security reasons but gold is not hard-wearing as steel or even plastic. So save yourself the tears over a banged-up gold Rolex and take an Explorer or a GMT when traveling for adventure is what they were made for. Then go home to your gold watch.
Yellow gold, champagne Stick dial. CLASSIC! I love it. My only worry would be the softness of the gold, but hey, maybe I could wear it daily. My own story is I have a Royal Oak 15500 (Blue!) for fancy, and a polar explorer for daily - and OK yes, I have several other watches that I don't wear much. The A.P. is super delicate, but the Day-Date can definitely be that one-watch cross-over. Fancy and reasonably robust. To my eyes, you picked the classic configuration. Mad respect! One caveat: Security could be a big issue, but it depends on your situation - it might not be that big. If someone takes my Polar, it's replaceable. My A.P.'s another matter.
I don't like gold watches, I don't like chunky romans, I don't like bracelets, I don't like cyclops magnifiers, I don't even really like day complications... but damn, that right there is a perfect watch.
I have a steel submariner and one day I want to get one of these. Im a machine repair technician and daily wear my sub. I was a multi watch kind of guy before I got my sub, now I’m pretty much a one watch guy. TBH I’d get a gold day date now but I know I’d just beat it up. Lovely watch, it really looks good, I like the dial choice too. I’d consider that dial or the same color but lumed.
This watch is SUCH a stunner. Honestly, Bruce, I didn't think you would keep at a year. I'm "dabbling" in gold (sort of) myself with my two-tone SD43, had it 15 months now. TT Root Beer is next, but gonna have to wait, as I just took delivery of my YM 40 Rhodium last week, My AD has been good to me. If you get out this way this summer, let me know, would be good to see you again.
Gorgeous watch, but unfortunately, far beyond the means of most. I own a gold and stainless Datejust that dials down the pomposity a bit and won't garner the attention of thieves quite as much.
I own a two tone date just, but I sold the gold day date I inherited. i felt uncomfortable wearing it for the risk and even more for feeling I didn't deserve it.
Beautiful watch. My personal grail watch is the yellow gold Day Date with the green dial. Working hard towards it. I already have a couple of Rolex purchases with the AD, after the next one I plan on quizzing them about the Day Date.
Excellent video covering everything we need to know about this watch from the owner experience perspective. I was very lucky to wear your watch recently during a visit and it has an understated elegance to the full gold Rolex experience that is unlike any other gold watch I have ever worn.
I never get any compliments on my DAY DATE..DAYTONA...even my Submariner when out and about here in NYC when i had them...but I get lots of compliments with my Patek for some reason..it is what it is I guess...
One day here in Albuquerque I was at a thrift store looking for flannel shirts. Only buy used flannel shirts. The store lights are like in a Jewelry store. I looked down at my 36mm day date yellow gold. I said wayne. What’s wrong with this picture. A day date on my wrist Buying a $3.75 flannel shirt. Or riding my specialized rock hopper made in 1988 with a DD on my wrist.
yawn. There are literally DOZENS of watches that are far better for a Fraction of the utter ridiculous price Rolex charges. If you buy a Rolex today, you are basically telling people you have one "just because you can"... yeah ok...Literally no-one cares or notices such a average looking watch. You can Buy this same watch (better in every way) for $250.00!!!! It just TELLS THE TIME for crying out loud! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
These days? Wear it accordingly and you’ll be fine. Know your surroundings and you’ll be fine. Whether now or 50 years ago there are certain places you wouldn’t flaunt a gold Rolex. So tired of people perpetuating this victim mentality.

Generally "suboptimal" is the word you want. There isn't really a negative version of Optimal, just less-than-Optimal ~
I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing this, exposed, where i live. Under a sleeve maybe.
Just got my first watch from my local AD!! Two tone yellow gold DJ 41 with fluted bezel and champagne diamond dial. Couldn’t be happier with it. One day I’ll have the watch you have. That’s the pinnacle of class.
Elegant, timeless and absolute class. A grail piece for sure.
I work in boca I see this watch on a daily basis
How much did you get it for?
Retail
I don't like gold watches, I don't like chunky romans, I don't like bracelets, I don't like cyclops magnifiers, I don't even really like day complications... but damn, that right there is a perfect watch.
I have a steel submariner and one day I want to get one of these. Im a machine repair technician and daily wear my sub. I was a multi watch kind of guy before I got my sub, now I’m pretty much a one watch guy. TBH I’d get a gold day date now but I know I’d just beat it up. Lovely watch, it really looks good, I like the dial choice too. I’d consider that dial or the same color but lumed.
a gold sub is stunning
Wear jeans and a hoodie and thieves will think it’s a fake.
Just got mine. So happy
I own a two tone date just, but I sold the gold day date I inherited. i felt uncomfortable wearing it for the risk and even more for feeling I didn't deserve it.
My favorite Rolex. Glad your enjoying it and wearing it all the time.
Beautiful watch. My personal grail watch is the yellow gold Day Date with the green dial. Working hard towards it. I already have a couple of Rolex purchases with the AD, after the next one I plan on quizzing them about the Day Date.
Nice one mate...I quite enjoyed this. I actually sold all of my ROLEX...I am now wearing Patek...
Scratch on the dial? 11 o'clock. Se at 0:48.
The Rolex Day-Date 36mm is so much nicer and more comfortable.
I've own a Hulk & DJ 116235 bluesy and drive a Toyota Collora. People think i'm wearing fake which is good so I can enjoy them without getting rob. 😁
One day here in Albuquerque I was at a thrift store looking for flannel shirts. Only buy used flannel shirts. The store lights are like in a
Jewelry store. I looked down at my 36mm day date yellow gold. I said wayne. What’s wrong with this picture. A day date on my wrist
Buying a $3.75 flannel shirt.
I am in LOVE!
Its pure class, but hard to wear comfortably these days
These days? Wear it accordingly and you’ll be fine. Know your surroundings and you’ll be fine. Whether now or 50 years ago there are certain places you wouldn’t flaunt a gold Rolex. So tired of people perpetuating this victim mentality.
@@michaelriera6277 i wasnt leaning towards robbery, in my case its more cause I am a quite luxury type of person but I do get your point and respect your opinion
@@michaelriera6277 Not necessarily true. I had this exact watch robbed from me at gunpoint outside of a restaurant in a nice area in LA (if you can call anywhere in LA nice now) it all happened in less than 10 seconds
@@michaelriera6277 and I always have my head on a swivel! life comes at u fast.
@@nafisetemadi6446well LA has no nice parts and is the exact spot not to wear it lol
After I get a day date I don’t think I’ll buy another watch for a long time unless I win the lottery
18038 is a great value and I love my birth year 36mm day date
The 36 mm size is my ultimate grail watch - the one which, once I acquire it (if I ever will, which is a big “if”), I will be out of the game.
I personally wear a 18038 and wear all the time and had the choice to buy a newer a version but have no regrets
if you keep the crown stuck out on the winder, there will form corrosion on the hands and indecies over the years.
I personally like the yellow gold, white dial with romans.
Thursday gold went as high as it’s ever been.
It's beautiful, mine gets a lot of wear too, I wear mine at least 8hrs a day. In my dreams when I'm asleep
I have a beautiful President knock off,but afraid to wear it.DONT want to get robbed .
Like a boss. I approve
Sure doesn’t look like you wear it often, but maybe we have much different lifestyles, frign beauty watch man
Loved the DayDate since I watched Sopranos years ago.
I love the hidden clasp. this model is the only one having it. only thing I don't like about it is the Day on it. I know what day it is.. I don't need that. it's goofy.
You can always get a gold casio A168 as a backup / beater ;)
I got mine in white gold with oyster bracelet, mostly because of the perception of the gold president.
Told you before and I’ll say it again. This does not fit your style. It’s literally like wearing flip flops with a suit.
DD is the king. Every bit of the watch is perfect
That watch will be beautiful forever. Timeless.
The watch is always a classic But in real world constantly a target for be mug and stolen during these times
I wish I could have one but I'm poor and can't have one but I can still get a plastic watch ⌚😭😔
All that money and can't see it in the dark. Hard pass. Pm pro models if I get the urge to wear a nice car on my wrist.
Gorgeous. How much? How long of a AD wait for it to buy? Thanks for sharing.
That's a 40,000 + watch easily
Bro I watched at 2x speed and you were still talking to slow - friendly feedback
Don't worry about the "perception" thingy, because 80% plus of the people who don't know you, are going to think its fake...
I'm sorry, but that's Rolex.
You not removing the racists commenters is disgusting. Makes you complicit.
Absolute baller watch! Love that you daily it. I've only one watch: yellow gold Daytona on a black leather strap from 2000.
Rolex's yellow gold is the new stainless steel 😄
What kind of gun do you carry, as there are plenty of unsavory eyes on it when worn in public.
Thank you, this watch is now on my list of watches to buy! awesome review!
Roman numerals give me a brain cramp. I'd much prefer the sticks.
Wayyyy too damn much money. It’s like wearing a vehicle in your wrist
Really wish they’d return to the brushed lugs. Modern ones way to garish.
I dont knkw why but i just think it looks better in 36 but iv got a datejust 41 n think thata better in 41 than the 36
1 yr. update: I still own it. Nuf said. Video 📹 over! 🤣 😉
