I really, really wanted a Rolex Sub Date about 18 months ago. I had saved up my £9k and had it in an instant saver account ready for the call from the AD. I regularly popped into the AD to remind them how much I wanted the Sub, etc. £9k is already way too much to be spending on a steel watch, so I refuse to pay an extra £4-5k for a pre-owned one. The AD eventually said I need to "build my profile" if I am ever to get a Sub. So on top of my £9k, I would need to spend an additional £6k for a different model first. I'm now so fed up with the AD games that I have completely lost all interest in a Sub. I'm glad I still have my £9k!

Yep, so true. Many people (my friends included) wished for the hype to disappear and for the market to take a dive. Those same people are now lamenting back a few years ago when their savings accounts were flush and that the impending recession is not real. What’s the adage?…”rising tide lifts all boats”. So maybe the opposite must be true as well then.

After I paid my house off, I considered saving up for a Rolex. I decided not to. I want to buy land instead. Rolex are nice watches, but I just don't know if they can hold their value 10 years from now. The clones are so close, you can't even tell them unless you have a microscope. A nice quartz watch is fine and they look great.

It went from the everyman's tool watch to nothing more than a status symbol. Undecorated, hidden movements (excepting the new 1908) and constant price increases for no increase in performance or looks has turned a lot of there potential customers off. So many other brands offer more for the same amount of money.

Best comment I've read all day. I think this was bound to happen. The advent of clocks on your computer, phone, etc...most people don't need a watch any more. Back in the day, sporting a really nice watch was pure joy because everyone wore one, and it was refreshing to see new styles. But today, the ONLY reason to buy a luxury watch is ONLY to flex. The function aspect is gone. The one exception to buy is collecting, but even collecting has been ruined by clones.

@@omerturk9462 Rolex has never discounted any half desirable model for 20%, even back in the 90s. Steel GMTs and Subs still trade way over retail (15-25% for Subs, 35-100% for GMTs depending on models). Even if they started trading below retail in years from now, which is virtually impossible for GMTs due to global demand, limited supply and MSRP increases every year, Rolex wouldn't discount them as they're a private company who cares about legacy and brand image more than anything - they'd just slow down production.

Steel Daytonas and Pepsis have never been available as walk-ins (even in the 2010s for Daytonas, you'd still have to wait or have some purchase history). The right metric to evaluate if the market would be much better is whether in most ADs, desirable but very common models like Steel Subs, steel & fluted Datejusts, steel Explorers would have a reasonable wait time of a few months at most, and models like OPs would be somewhat available as walk-ins.

Yep - Rolex AD really treated me like a wet bag of shaite when I wanted the watch for my 30th Birthday... and that is it - they lost me as a customer forever. Submariner was my first choice (second being Omega Speedmaster), but now any of their watches are behind the last watch on my list. I will NEVER buy a Rolex... they can come into my house, abduct my girlfriend and even give me a blowjob, they not getting 1 penny out of me. No brand can treat me like this and expect my money ever again. Even if they beg me and my purchase would be 50% of retail and would be a difference between them going bankrupt of not... I am happy to see them go. Rolex does not exist to me. And this was 2020, so pre-pandemic... I can't even imagine how bad it was during the pandemic, because even before simpleton black Submariner was already "look don't touch" item. And when I asked if I can "try it on" the staff laughed a little... kind of trying to make me feel embarrassed for asking such stupid question.
And by the way - I don't mean "service was horrible"... no - they literally made fun of me, obviously in very polite way, but it was literally patronising. Basically they treated me like a 5-years old in a car dealership... "oh yes, you can drive this... whroom whroom, you like this, maybe when you father comes around you can sit on his lap". No I am sorry, I am the customer, I was looking to part with £8,000 of my hard earned cash (not from crypto) and you selling a luxury good which is completely optional in life. With that attitude you won't have my business.

@@_Azur Same here - walking into Omega next door, service was great, all the watches were for sale, what you see you can try and overall amazing service. Basically, they asked me roughly what I was looking for and just brought like 5 watches closest to the description for me to try out. Day an night difference! They were kind of proud of their watches and explained all the details to me, basically "we know what we have here, we are not some sort of second rate brand", but apart of that purely transactional - "you bring the money, we have the goods". Obviously, I was also polite etc. but it is just crazy how completely normal person is treated like shit by Rolex and Omega next door treats people like people.
Rolex AD didn't offer me other brands (I don't think they had anything else), but absolutelly all watches were "look don't touch", even the cheapest ones like Oyster Perpetual and Datejust. They wouldn't even consider putting me on wait list for Submariner "we currently don't know then it is going to be in stock" (honestly at this point I already hated the brand and just thought - if I could get Submariner on waitlist I can flip it for profit), but they said if I am interested they can put me on the list for Datejust... And I said okey. To be fair they called me back in November same year (my birthday was June and I was shopping in May) and said they may have Datejust coming for December... at which point I was like nah don't care.
Most importantly, Omega is just as good, in many regard even better (when it comes to technicalities and specs, the movement etc.) and I just understand why people so crazy about Rolex when that is the experience they get. And yet!.. there are nobody queuing next to Omega, but plenty suckers waiting forever to get Rolex - sad reality in life... treat people like scum and they will comeback for more.

Thank you for exposing the fraudulent diamond industry. Diamonds are not rare! Same with Rolex, they aren't rare either. Both companies have built their business models of false rarity and exclusiveness.

I see all of these youtubers saying that the market is dead, you can get watches quickly at ADs. So I tried it out and went to the ADs in my area (living in NL) asking for OP / sub / gmt and got the same old answers: not available and no waitlists (which means only VIP gets them). no steal models available, only mixed / full with gold which nobody wants.
