🤔 Jared, If this was a brand new remand engine with very little miles, and heat cycles on it, as you're saying... I think a head gasket in this circumstance on a mild built without boost or anything crazy motor, would have less to do with a tuner and have more to do with a cheap head gasket and improper installation of it. Now, you might be able to afford replacing it and want to do everything properly but I have a "QUETIONABLE" suggestion to try 1st, in this circumstance before ripping into your new motor... I know too late this time. 😬
    1. Before you ripped it apart, you could have used a boroscope, to determine what cylinder was having the head gasket cooling leak, without doing the disassembly.
    2. Drain the coolant...save it, you know we're doing this on a budget. Reinstall the spark plugs. Then start the engine run it for a minute, and warm it up with no coolant, just don't overeat it. This will dry out all the water passages in the motor. This step of draining the coolant is not necessary, but will help making sure no issues with anymore seepage issues for the next step.
    3. With aluminum heads like here make sure motor cools completely down. Now you have found what cylinder is the issue, so now remove everything you need to, to remove the valve cover for that cylinder. Next go through and retort all the headbolts. Back each one off a little bit and retort it to factory spec, one at a time. You may want to do this on both heads. Just to make sure they were torque properly from the beginning. Retorqing heads especially with cheap headbolts and cheap gaskets is sometimes a good idea after a couple heat cycles on a new engine. Most quality gaskets and parts with properly installation, theses days this doesn't have to be done these days but...
    4. Reinstall your valve covers, replace gaskets or high temp RTV if necessary, Refill your cooling system if needed. Put everything back together, and then pray 🙏 it worked. If it doesn't work you're going to definitely have to follow the steps here that Jared's doing here unfortunately. Some of you may say this is a waste of time, I say it's worth the try. It has worked for me, and it cost nothing to try just a little time. Note now this will most likely not work, if at all on an older high mileage engine, this is only a segestion for a new engine, like here in this circumstance Jared has.
😉👍 I hope these suggestions helps anyone in the same circumstance here Jared is in with savings and cash, and if anyone has any argument or anything to add to my " QUETIONABLE " suggestions here, please I would love to hear them.

25:26 and a REALLY quick way to see if coolant is getting in to the combustion chamber is to use a borescope camera and inspect the crown (top) of the piston; a cylinder that is firing normally will have a coating of black carbon on the piston crown from the flame front; if the piston crown looks like its has been "steam cleaned" with absolutely no carbon on it, you can guarantee that coolant has been getting into that cylinder and is being burned along with the fuel/air charge.
EDIT: the logo at 7:38 NEEDS to be turned into a Toolbox Sticker on the Bunker Branding Page! (maybe have a whole series dedicated to various systems; since the Engine-Runner-Gooder one is equivalent to Engine Performance, have another for Engine Mechanical, Steering and Suspension, Brakes, HVAC, Electrical, Fabrication, and Driveline)

I don't know tons about LS engines either (though I am learning all I can daily), the early (pre-2000, I believe) had graphite head gaskets.
As a side note, the way to tell if your engine has graphite or MLS head gaskets is to look for a rivet in the little bit of gasket protruding at the corner of the head.

  • @gar24407

Jared skip the step of pressurizing the system and looking in the cylinder to find the coolant. You can get a kit to pressurize the coolimg system, then use a small borescope (depsteck is like $30) to confirm the leak. This is critical because I almost change a head gasket but it was an EGR cooler leaking.

I don't often go to comments because I watch UA-cam on my TV. However, I was hoping the comments would confirm what I thought Jared was referring to at the end. Now I know. Thanks all.

Pretty shure those fiber gaskets leak. Come to think of it they usually fail on exhaust manifolds and collectors. Check the heads check the deck and use MLM head gaskets. Or just copper spray the MLM and slap it back together.

Those gaskets were not sealed. When we run aluminum heads with that type of gasket on iron block we spray an Adhesion promoter on both the aluminum head and the block. I think your leak is from the Gasket material itself and it should have been an MLS gasket.

those head gaskets where only on the very first sand cast LS heads. They are Much cheaper. look for the V cast near the spark plug holes. cast do not have them. if you do they are a die cast and need MLRS head gasket

I really love the Patina that vintage US cars get... In the UK, it's just purely rotten thru metal when you see rust... Surface rusting is NOT a thing here. 😂
