I just said the same. This video needs to be shown to people who think mechanics charge too much. They don't see the sweat, bloody knuckles and frustration we go through.
@@slickjohnc1as an electrician I hear the same complaints but people don’t know what a 140 degree attic feels like in summertime, or crawling through nasty crawl spaces etc. I do industrial and commercial now days but residential is not a fun job.

i knew it would be bad when you said the transmission had been "rebuilt".
To be fair, it was broken by the other stuff breaking and not being addressed quickly enough.
Since the exhaust bolts were rounded off, I'm inclined to think "Bubba" did the trans rebuild, versus a reputable shop.

I think Jared needs some of those extra tables/shelves on wheels that the Car Wizard has.
Watching you is similar to watching Alex Palmeri of Legitstreetcars. Seeing and understanding all the frustrations you both go through. A true learning experience for everyone.

No air, no lift, just intent on breaking it down on his back and frustrated. This is how your watchers do it and can relate. I took apart my 4matic without formal training or a lift so I can relate to his determination. Jared is just a powerhouse of automotive know how.

@Mike If I remember correctly, three cars were used in the movie - all Modena GT Spyder California replicas of the ’61 Ferrari GT. The one that went out the garage was just a fiberglass shell. They damaged the other running car in the jump scene, but someone bought and restored it I believe. I'd love to have one, real or fake.
The exhaust bolts are a problem no matter what. I've done tons of these. I just cut the crossover pipe out and weld it back unless the manifold gaskets are leaking. Also taking the nuts and bolts after the trans is out is way easier. If you read this and are about to take this just cut the exhaust. If you can't weld a short drive to a muffler shop and 25$ later is the way.
In addition to the cleaning, get an Ozone machine for the smell.
I live in Michigan, I am so jealous! I have never in my life seen a 20 year old Chevy that CLEAN underneath!

Way to go Jared. Wish you were closer, I'm one of those freaks that enjoys detailing. Cut and buff, pull the seats, carpet shampooing, bring out the toothbrushes and get busy.
My 6' 3" son has saved up for a vehicle, the Tahoe would fit him perfect. When it has a price, let me know.
And stuck, stripped, rounded, rusted out, name that condition, bolts and nuts is the reason why I got Oxyacetylene torches when I went from being a Diesel Mechanic to being an electronic repair tech. Alleviates SO much frustrations! I still miss having a welder. Love the content!

Maan seeing the truck just working and driving within one episode was just such a treat to watch. Jared is just one talented and extremely experienced car doctor. Those 30 minutes went so quick. I wanted more! hahaha.
Jared, 90% of us work on jack stands outside in all weathers, this is why we watch you, we can relate. hyper cars in heated industrial sized garages are a distant dream to most of your audience
Jared, I know this project did not go the way you wanted. But it better educated me about a car situation, that I have questioned since I made it. I once had a Tahoe just like this one, but in beige. One day, while reversing, I lost the reverse gear with a *TWING*. I drove it for a couple months after that, always careful of where I parked, until I started having battery trouble. The wife and I had started to consider trading it in on a newer 300 or Charger, but then we found a V6 Magnum and the deal was made. For years I drove by the dealership where I traded the vehicle in, and always saw it in the lot, which I always thought was odd considering the high trade in value they gave me on it, and how they convinced me they could turn it around... but never did, because when the vehicle was finally gone, it was only because the dealership had folded. I am smiling on that deal a little more now... so Thank You
Around herr we just cut that sh#t off and weld it back together later. Cut it in the best place to clear what you need and weld it back together
I'm not from the US and I don't know these vehicles but I was completely absorbed. Content and presentation style here is as good as it gets plus Jared has a genuine warmth that many of his contemporaries have lost in their striving for popularity.

As someone who wrenches everyday (haha) for my day job them goes home and wrenches every night for youtube. I enjoy watching the struggle. It makes it all the more real and enjoyable. I always look forward to every upload and seeing the confidence in front of the camera grow. Keep it up! Love it what your doing with this channel!

YEP , I went through the same ordeal, After a major MVA , my brother sold me a $1,000 02 Yukon . I had to rebuild rear end , replace brakes , rotors , shocks , u joints, starter and transmission . Spent 4,500 on parts , Lesson learned and I will hold to this one.

This is the most realistic mechanic video I have seen. Some of the videos make me feel like a caveman sometimes because they just use the best takes and make everything seem seamless. Thanks for keeping it real.

Neat tip I learned for moving heavy engine and drivetrain parts from under the car when you're on jack stands:
Get a cheap baking sheet from the dollar store and screw a bolt or thick screw into one end. Wrap a piece of Paracord over the bolt then bend the bolt over to keep the Paracord on it. You can then lower parts onto the sheets and easily slide it on garage floors or driveways with almost no resistance.
I think you made the right call on replacing the trans, but the sun shell isn't the only thing that can cause the issue you were having. For reverse to work in these units, the reverse clutch pack (which transfers through the sun shell) and the low/reverse pack need to work.
Its possible the low/reverse clutch pack was burnt up while someone was trying to get the truck out of the mud. Going between reverse and manual low and still being stuck can do that.
The ratcheting noise was the parking pawl trying and failing to engage on the rear ring gear, either the pawl is worn out or the rod got bent.

Unfortunately most cars in Ohio die from rust, it's sad :(
When something is broken it might be a good idea to take it apart and show whats wrong and perhaps share some tips how to put it together again.. I love to learn new things.

working on old rust belt junkers most of my life has given me the skills to realize whenever you see stripped bolts or rounded nuts you either go for the grinder or the acetylene
I spent all day on the wife's VW Touareg 3.0 v6 changing the starter. On the driveway. One or two low points, but coffee and a bit of youtube. It's all done and working :)

Forgot to add until researched a part: if you find bolts that's really rounded off like that, weld a new larger nut onto the stripped nut and then remove it. We've had to do this on farm equipment a few times when they just got so rusted on that they stripped rather than break loose. Lots of wd40 and a larger nut welded on make a world of difference, as does a good battery powered impact wrench. Air is better for a shop, but those Rigid Octane batteries on their 1/2" impact wrench will break anything loose. I used mine (with the 9.0Ah Octane battery) to break a 10" lag bolt loose from a conex container. It resisted a 24" breaker bar with a 4 foot cheater bar but the Octane broke it loose like it was a screw in softwood.
Dude... that actually does look like it has a lot of potential! I love driving this generation of Tahoe/Suburban, and love when they are kept/made nice.

Funny 40 years ago when I use to work on cars we worked on the floor like you were doing and that was the only way to do anything under the car. Sometimes it was so cold in the garage there was a frost film on the floor. It's nice that today even a shade tree mechanic could by a lift to put in a garage or in a driveway to work on cars. I like your shop. I also Like your comment about how free cost you money.
I worked in an exaust shop. I battled so many manifold bolts....ugh its so frustrating. For real the best thing I ever used was called a nut splitter. About a 3 ft long attachment for an air hammer( they also make them you can just thread in a bolt but they suck) it looks like a mini pickle fork. Splits the nut in half and it also mushrooms one side so a socket has something to grab. I hope it helps with the next one b/c it litterally changed my life when I bought one.
I have a 2002 Chevy Suburban Z71 I hear a lot of play in the brake pedal and also a lot of play for the four-wheel drive on the front shafts with all the clinics at the shop say it's all good

That's awesome and I think it is really nice ride you have. I'd love to have something that nice, you can clean smells lol. I got a smoker car cheap as a repo. Pulled all the seats, door panels, and carpet out to clean them. Got the Dodge Avenger for $1500 from a bank who loaned me $2500 on it so I could fix all the issues, oil leaks, full brakes set, two door panels needed, center console replacement and major cleaning. Drive it for a year and traded it in for $4500 on my wife car which we got a deal on at the start of Covid when people were not buying cars. I'd like to have that as my truck to drive to work and take my son fish in. He "can't" ride in old hardbody pickup be his car seat doesn't lock in. But the truck was $100 lol.
thanks for the video about those tahoes, I also want to keep my mom's old tahoe, the issue with that truck is that shut off randomly, the only I can get it to start is to move at an angle the fuel pump relay. Every since the fender-bender it got back in 2004 it been having that issue. It came back with that problem when my parents picked it up from the progressive body shop, now I am trying to restore the family old truck while doing other maintenance on it.

Oh I know all about trying to be patient and not getting frustrated working on a vehicle. I did rear struts for the first time. Couldnt get the old ones out until I removed part of the rear suspension. Then had trouble getting that part of the suspension back on.
Then while getting one strut to line up with the wheel half of the strut the other side was way off and had trouble realigning that. So at 7pm on a Saturday part of my vehicle was apart in my garage and wanted to get my Challenger back inside for the night. So it got frustrating at well 6:30pm and took over an hour to try to realign the strut despite probably not using the best tools. Had a mini floor jack, sledgehammer, some flathead screwdrivers and some dowels and it finally got done.
I was worn out from that. If I didn't need to move my vehicles around I would have just stopped at 7 but well frustration and determination kicked in. But got them in and the alignment was a little off but nothing that made the alignment guy say what!? 👍
I also hate dealing with stripped out bolts. Especially when those are usually not bad unless like you said they used the wrong size. You can get the proper socket for $3-4 at most hardware stores. It just makes sense to get the right one so you don't strip them out.
Hey Jared, I've just completed a big vehicle project getting a 2001 Subaru Outback on the roads here in Melbourne, Australia. Been a tough project that took 18months to complete, but yesterday I finally got it registrated and now able to drive it wherever I want - well??? not really due to the lockdown rules here in the most lockdown city for the world but atleast I can drive to shops to get things etc. I did this all in my driveway due to not having a workshop and yep it was on stands so I know how tough it can be. But when you keep going, you can get to the end like I am now - doing driving along the roads again. (Haven't had a car for over 8 years due to my tough budget however I have to say the last few days and driving kms have been awesome!!!!!) I wish I had a workshop...one day.. yours looks great!!!!!

I feel every bit of this. Essentially if not exactly the same setup on my '97 Z71 1500. Not the toughest job, but laying on the ground to do it is the worst. At least you have a NICE floor. Beats gravel in the back any day.
Just like my $250 94 Ford Ranger XLT extended cab 4.0L Manual... with a 99 parts truck that has pretty much been a front end swap for the 94, as well as doors, and now on to the suspension issues, which are drivers front spindle/brake caliper (all 1 piece), inner tie rod, steering shaft, possibly new steering box, shocks (all 4), control arm bushings, rear spring bushings, drivers rear axle seal (with unknown axle that isnt original and no ID plate) and after all that is done, a new windshield and get rid of ancient purple window tint

careful of the tube on the carbon canister, easy to bust off, hard to find without a smoke generator, and youll chase CEL's until you find it!

I always had good luck with j&b weld get the nut striped and than find socket that you kinda gotta push on and fill it Full, it always works for me

What a great say to break in the new shop lol. That water pump was SMOKED!!! Those bearings were definitely GONE! Exhaust manifold bolts are a pain in the ass on anything older/ rusty as is, let alone with someone being a jackass rounding off the fasteners. Was going to suggest a small cutoff wheel but access is tough. Glad you got all that done laying on your back. Its truly not fun no matter what, and when your accustomed to using a lift it'll definitely make you miss it lol.
