I literally had every single one of these symptoms and pretty bad. Nine months on a potassium rich KETO diet and I now have no such symptoms . Love ya Dr Berry!
@@kathyalexander4855 Liquid magnesium is the most bioavailable and won't cause a laxative effect unless you take more than you need ( or take it too fast) NOW liquid ionic magnesium has made a big difference for me.
7 signs -Physical weakness -Mental fatigue/irritability -Occasional Muscle Cramps -Constipation -Palpitation -Fluid Retention/swelling -Muscle tiredness when you wake up You're welcome. Edit: sorry im also in a hurry so i didnt check my grammar 🤘
All these signs can most likely be a deficiency in the mineral magnesium, NOT potassium. Jyst my opinion. Magnesium is the mineral that is most often lacking or too low in the human body. That is why we need to supplement with a magnesium capsule. 300 to 400 mg per day. Viola, you feel better. Magnesium helps in over 300 bodily functions including that of your vital organs. Jean.
I had my sodium, potassium and sugar drop badly once and end up in ER! Horrible experience! They said, I was at the verge of cardiac arrest! One lesson learned!
and what's scarier is when the value are within "normal limits" but one is still deficient...the CELL is what is not observed on ER labs.... you had to be SERIOUSLY depleted through lack of hydrated, proper nutrition, etc.
It's very important to make sure you don't have low potassium!! I was feeling bad for several days, finally felt so bad the 3rd day & had to call an ambulance. When I got to the ER & checked by the doctor, I was told they didn't see how I was alive. My potassium & magnesium wouldn't even register it was so low!! Please keep this checked & look for signs. I now take prescription potassium & magnesium every day & have blood work every 2 months & more often if I feel bad & have any of these signs!! Hope all stays well!!
I recently had very low potassium, 2.7 I think. I had been passing out and called the ambulance. After my blood work showed the severe potassium level an infusion was started immediately! You can die from too low in potassium. Thank God they found it and helped me quickly.
I used to have all of those symptoms and ended up in hospital with a suspected heart attack. While in the hospital I was put on a potassium drip. I felt much better afterwards. It's so frustrating when I tell my doctor I feel like my potassium is low. They just don't get it. Rather than prescribing electrolytes and suggesting which foods I should eat, they always want more tests and hospital visits. I was on the operating list for 12 months before I finally said enough. Now I eat more healthily and take a potassium supplement every day I feel so much better. Nobody explained fully what the proposed surgery was actually for, but it involved going through my nose! No, thank you.
They'll bleed you dry if they can, rather than fixing the problem. They don't want to lose customers. Since I had A-Fib last year, I found my heart is actually perfect. I had to fire my cardiologist because he wanted to give me blood thinners, which I refused. Since I added extra magnesium and potassium, I don't even have the simple arrhythmia that I've had since I was a child. The cardiologist said he gives everyone blood thinners after A-Fib, just so he can prevent strokes, whether people need them or not! I guess they have to cover their arsses because they don't want people to see that their heads got stuck up there. 😂😅🤣😆
I’m very angry at myself and my doctors. About 10 years ago I allowed a dr to put me on metapolol for heart palpitations. I told him at that time that taking potassium seem to make palpitations go away. I got a dumbfounded look. I also got the same look when I told my PCP years later. They both knew I had one thyroid removed at 12 yrs old. Years later I’ve learned more and can’t believe that the doctors didn’t make the connection. I found out I have Hashimoto after thyroid cancer. I understand why doctors say not to get information from the internet. They are afraid we might figure out, like I have, that they are clueless. Thanks so much for providing us with information that is actually life saving and not detrimental like the big pharma “doctors” who also never told me the side effects of the Crestor and PPI’s. It’s Time we all leave the pill pushers.
Same for me. The metoprolol didn’t help. I stopped taking it after I began understanding what were actually need to be healthy and haven’t had palpitations in approximately three years.
Going thru chemo for breast cancer and my doctors keep putting me on potassium pills saying I'm low...I don't have ANY of the symptoms mentioned and I'm doubtful that I need as much as they're prescribing. 😑
In March/April 2023, I woke up paralyzed from the neck down. Went to the ER and turned out my blood-potassium level was 1.9. I was in the hospital for two weeks, then rehab for two weeks. Two weeks later, I was back in the ER for severe muscle aches and weakness; potassium level as down to 2.3. In July 2023, I was back at the ER for the third time, again for potassium level around 2.9. The reason? I had severe diarrhea since January 2023 because I had undiagnosed Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). Unfortunately, it took from April to July for them to finally diagnose me with EPI. Now I am taking enzyme replacement with every meal/snack and my potassium level has remained in the normal range since.
Just found out that my potassium was critical low…and I was having heart palpitations…they gave me potassium pills and started felling good instantly…woke up this morning felling like I could run miles…didn’t know that was so important to your heart..🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
53 years old and have all the symptoms , palpitations scared me lately ....8 beats then a massive thump continuous for hours ! Why do our GPs never tell us about this ?
Me too. I'm not even sure if I should be taking magnesium or potassium or both. N how do they interact n how much? I also hv muscle twitches like restless legs 🙄 im 45. Wish I had a Dr. I'm just going to buy some n see
@@amandaclark2340 I'm not a doctor but both of them should be good (you also need enough sodium in your diet to absorb the other electrolytes, plus other things like zinc and at least a little bit of taurine or magnesium for instance won't do it's work). A balance between the various minerals and other nutriment is important. Potassium is usually causing more cramps in the extremities (feet, hands, twitching eyelids) I had those symptoms for decades since my teenage years and it is gone now. Potassium is also very important to make the chloridric acid (might be translated a bit too literally from french) for your stomach, that had also been a very big problem for me as I realized years later.
@@amandaclark2340 , Restless legs are more of an iron deficiency, I think. My mother suffered from leg cramps, then I started suffering from them a few years back, and when I took Magnesium, they went away (ish). I added Potassium that my doctor prescribed, and that was the extra thing I needed. So I'd say, use both. Magnesium Glycinate is a good general magnesium. I use Nature's Bounty that I got from Costco, and it seems pretty good. Potassium can be caustic, so you can't lie or recline for at least 20 minutes after taking it.
Definitely get plenty of natural, bio available magnesium. It calms the nervous system. It counterbalances the muscle fiber contraction mineral calcium. Magnesium helps the body to hold onto potassium. Dried pumpkin seeds "pepitas", nuts, leafy greens, avocados, bananas are all reliable sources of useable magnesium. Magnesium Oxide is a bad choice. Not bioavailable. Magnesium Orotate or Glycinate I have read many times are good if you want to rely on a supplement.
How are they going to get their medical school bills paid if they fail to prescribe enough drugs by telling us answers to questions about health...just had that conversation about treating the problem vs masking the symptoms
I passed out in an airport, and the emergency room found I had low potassium. We had been vacationing, and I had not had enough water or food. I did not realize the danger - it can stop your heart. I am thankful they identified the problem so quickly.
I once had my potassium level drop so low that I nearly died. I was hospitalized with delirium for 2 weeks, in a rehab facility for 2 months, and cognitive and memory impairment for nearly 2 years. As a Mensa member the final condition was the worst. Low potassium is no joke!
please forgive me this legnth of comment. i am very passionate about potassium topics. i have had potassium issues since 2011. the first time i thought it was the flu. i went to the small "bandaid hospital" er to get a shot for the nausea. they did labs and then swung the curtian open with 2 giant pills and 2 bags of iv fluid. i asked what it was all for. they said my potassium was low and i was being admitted. i asked what that meant and they said that i could have a heart attack at any moment (1.7!)~ not a hospital meant for life threatening situations. fast forward thru the years of being told, "i don't know why it is low...." nothing else is wrong. it is the diuretics you are taking. you must not be taking your potassium. your potassium is normal now, and hours later recheck and rushing to hook the iv potassium. being emotionally and mentally abused when i went t o er and then transferred every. single. time. to the psych rooms. cannot tell you how many times i litterally lost my mind because no one knew. (until 2015 turns out...) i thought maybe i was doing something, started questioning myself if they were right. how many times i was told when i swelled up 5-40lbs pretty much overnight that it was not swelling, i was just fat! i knew it was swelling because once given my diuretics back it most times came off as fast as it went on. i also cannot breath or function when swollen. even the bottom of my feet get so bad i cannot walk without crying or collapsing. fast forward again, April 2020. i was in the mental hospital. i had them check potassium (they were familiar with me). i was transfered to the main hospital twice. it was the second time that they got the on call nephrologist on board.... who happened to be one of the best. he looked in my files and found in 2015 that my then nephrologist and endocrinologist ran some tests that came back extremely abnormal. no one followed up. the endo accused me in the note saying i was taking too much diuretic and not taking my potassium like i should and ignored it. the on call re did those and did some others and FINALLY told me it was not my doing, and that i was indeed not 'crazy.!" he said i have hyperaldostertone! given my history we were thinking most likely secondary. someone later said prob primary without adrenal tumor since around 36 yo i had what was thought to be a stroke. he said might have been a TIA since they could not comfirm that and when they accessed my power port i felt something dislodge and passed out twice that night. so i still take my loop diuretics. i was switched from spironolactone to inspra.. which has been a game changer. i went from being admitted 3-5times per month to only 8-10 since 2020. i have only been in psych once.... my symptoms of it dropping or has dropped are 1. swelling, EVERYWHERE (more than 5lbs in 24 hr) 2. feeling faint 3. peeing a lot... like a potty hat full every 30 minues. 4. a distinct headache 5. weakness 6. sleeping a lot more, but also not being able to sleep for several days. 7. nausea 8. vomiting 9. some confusion in the moment 10. a lot more than usual whole body muscle spasms and bones hurting 11. the biggest one of all tho is when my suicidal thoughts become active with a plan and nothing triggered it. i have only had one hospitalist who was an horrible. he refused to call my nephrologist and went back to telling me it was my fault and diuretics doing it. and if not on diuretics potassium would go back up and i won't need it. few hrs later they check, it is up. but few hrs more it drops lower than when i came in. and i had not taken diuretic for 3 days prior. i called my nephrologist who came to see me and fixed my meds.
side note. i cannot eat enough potassium to keep up with my loss. 180 MEQ twice a day. sometimes more if i feel low or take my prn diuretic. i cannot drink gatorade or like sources due to sodium. i have found shine water and body armour is high in potassium but not sodium. i have to take magnesium. i have gastroparesis which doesn't help with absorbtion and digestion. a lot of times i end up finally throwing up.... at times 24-36 hrs i will throw up undigested food
Me too! Totally off of mine by believing the Doc than that da_n RDA, plus my headaches are gone because of SALT. I love salty foods but was told it was bad for me. I look up everything now. BP meds can eventually cause glaucoma, nearly always cause ankle edema then they tell me too much salt, and 90 % constipation and other gut issues. WOW. Lie after Lie. I have been researching stuff for over 10 years, was hard to find the truth, and so many falsified studies. But truth coming out! Thanks again Doc!
How much potassium you take and when? What brand do you buy? When should I take , please help , my bp is high doctor give me medicine but it made my stomach sick after took one pill I stop. Thank you for your time.
Really enjoyed this video. I had cancer, I'm a 15 year survivor, and after 9 months of chemo it really messed my up. I have to take 2 potassium tablets daily, also 2 B-12 injections weekly, and serveral other meds. Since being on potassium I feel so much better. I definitely recommend getting tested for your potassium level. It's worth it folks.
My husband is currently going through chemo for lung cancer. The chemo causes bad constipation at times and i kept saying that's a sign of insufficient potassium. I myself began using potassium so that i could lower/stop blood pressure issues due to stress.
1. Physical weakness 2. Mental fatigue 3. Muscle cramps 4. Constipation 5. Palpitations 6. Endema 7. Muscle aches & stiffness 8. Numbness in hands and feet ( SEVERE) I have been getting bad foot and leg cramps this year. Thanks for the info.🙂
I had that weakness for a long time. I couldn’t make it up the stairs. My hip muscles and legs would just fry out. I couldn’t curl weight in the gym and I got muscle cramps all over my body, all the time. I thought it was Covid when I had brain fog. It’s bad. I can’t remember anything - lose my thought mid sentence. Had edema in my ankles and cardiologist thought it was my heart bc I had serious palpitations and arrhythmias! That was scary bc my BP was ok. I’m always achy and stiff in muscles. Doc saw my potassium was low. Since taking potassium citrate and gluconate this week, my cramps almost gone. My memory is better, less foggy. Potassium helping with my arthritis. I feel much better, motivated, awake. Thank you Dr. Berry. 🙏
I'm in tx, and in a poorly insulated second floor south facing apt with no central air and heat plus I reky on the bus for transportation. Tge heat is often deadly in summer with temps being often over 100° f without humidity. All of this month and some of last month was all at 102° and above. Tidaygot to 105° . I absolutely have to suppliment potassium no matter how many potassium rich foods I consume. I'm doing a keto diet for health reasons attributed to hoshimotoes. A lot of easy access options for electrolytes are full of sugar so I can't have them. When covid hit, before I went keto, getting things like Gatorade powder cans was hard, especially in glavors I like. So I looked into making my own. I was able to get all the ingredients except the magnesium glycinate because of cost. So I looked into other options and found switchel. Switchel when originally made is not keto safe, but once it fermented into vinegar it is. Add a few drops of that to water infused with Apple, pineapple, watermelon, or oranges and u've got a nice low price suppliment. 4-6 teaspoones of pureed fruit or juice to a 64 oz bottle of water works really well to beat the heat. For me a dead giveaway of potassium deficiency arecramps along the base of my ribs. I've got them bad enough to cause me doubling over in tears before.
Feel so lost. At 74, I have had one Dr that actually listened to my symptom and along with a blood test, prescribed potassium for me. which improved my life so quickly it was a blessing. As I followed my husband to every small town as he progressed in his career, I had many doctors who were afraid to prescribe potassium. Resorted to dietary fixes which only partially helped. Years of cramps...insomnia...palpitations...heart tests...30 day heart monitors...bloat...constipation...blurry thinking ...cramped hands and toes...My new doctor says blood test look normal, but I take 3AM+3PM 99 potassium tabs to just stay a bit normal. Am having cramps in my feet as I write this. It's wonderful to have this information, but how do I find a Dr. less afraid of a law suit and more interested in relieving the suffering of his patients?
There are potassium heavy electrolyte powders that will easily help you hit your daily goal. Much more than the limited 99mg pills. Look up Keto K1000 electrolyte powder, that's just one of them. I take the unflavored and it just tastes like your water has minerals in it. You don't need a script.
Doctors are idiots. They are afraid to prescribe potassium, but have no problem describing drugs which have serious side effects. They don't want people to get well. They want patients who will return monthly for a new prescription.
@EB-wl9st I just started today taking 99 twice a day and I swear it made me feel funny by evening like I was shot out of a cannon...maybe a tingly headache? I'm carnivore and that's the only thing I've done different and then felt different
OMG!! I started Carnivore 5 months ago and lost 30lbs yay but I felt awful...I had everyone of these symptoms! I can’t believe its potassium I needed. This is lifesaving information...I thought I would have to go to the hospital it was that bad. I ordered the potassium citrate powder and within an hour I started feeling better, thinking clearer, no more tingling hands and feet, no more headache I had for 4 days... I don’t even know how to thank you ❤️ Words aren’t enough!! THANK YOU!!
@@joycewang2619 Everyone needs a different amount . I get the powder and start off with a smaller amount and work my way up to a dose that I feel good on , also potassium & magnesium goes hand in hand . So take a little bit of mag with it . If you take pico mag you won’t get diarrhea.
God put man in a GARDEN for a reason; not a feedlot...eat half veg/fruit and half starch like potatoes or beans not too much grains. read The Starch Solution book....potassium is in potatoes n beans especially lima beans n kidney beans put in soup its great.
I struggled for 6 month having seizures everyday , no energy, it got to the point I had to admit defeat and go to the hospital…. My pottasium level was at 1.1 the doctors said a few more hours I would be dead, a year later my body still won’t hold it in my body at all but I’m doing much better
My brother passed away from low potassium, September last year he had blood work done twice, first one was 3.1 second one was 2.9 , both came with a warning to the dr that it was low, he started radiation on October 18, at which time it was 2.6 . Dr signed for the results that night, but waited till Saturday morning to call him and tell him to go to pharmacy and pick up a drug because she was concerned that it was to low. Well that evening at 5:45 he died. Autopsy showed his potassium was 2.0. If only she would have called Monday night, damn good chance he would still be with us, RIP Broski (Roy)
They suggested a pill when his levels were critical?? That MUST be malpractice. He should have absolutely been on an IV the moment the lab determined his levels!!
For years and years, my potassium levels would come up low. Then one day a pulmonologist finally explained to me that frequent Albuterol use can cause it. So if you use your inhaler often, remember to stay on top of your potassium levels too... As most Americans are deficient in potassium as it is already!
@@taradikoff123 Oh I definitely had issues because of it. Fatigue, muscle pain and weakness, muscle spasms and cramps, abnormal EKGs, tingling in my toes and feet, gut motility issues, etc. Some times more severe than others. It was just an endless repeating circle of getting blood tests, seeing potassium was low/very low, prescribing me RX potassium for a week, me feeling better for a few weeks; then repeat. Doctors always acted perplexed at why I couldn't keep the levels up so after years, I just kinda of accepted that "I guess that's just how my body is" and continued to ride the roller coaster.
If anyone reading this does have low potassium, please don't let your doctors ignore it or treat it passively. I honestly feel like the health care system failed me in this department. Too many were nonchalant about it and I trusted too much. I have a lot of regrets. It's you're health, so up to you to take the initiative. -Ask for frequent blood tests that include potassium. -Ask for a prescription of it's low. -Talk to your pulmonologist about starting or stepping up on a maintenance inhaler. -Remember that most OTC multivitamins and potassium supplements contain only 2% Daily Value. -The highest OTC is 1020mg of bicarbonate. -You can also get a capsule filler and fill your own. Potassium is vital. Your heart and other cells rely on it to function properly. Please don't ignore low potassium levels!
Thank you for your video. I want people to also be aware of a disease that causes low K called Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis. If anyone has low K and kidney stones but the doctors aren't connecting the dots you might have this disease (which comes in conjunction with autoimmune secondary disorders). Also, be aware too much K has the same symptoms as low K. I was unconscious for over 18 hours as my body was voiding probably 99.99% of the K IV bags (it burns going in) I was being given until my body decided to start retaining it. I was inpatient for 3 days trying to get my levels back up. And from my missing 18 hours I was very disoriented. It all started with weakness and breathing problems. This was scarier than a life of chronic stones.
@@dRTAdave Ty! I have kidney stones, low potassium, autoimmune issue (+ana) & hx of hereditary funky kidney issue of atrophy without a known cause. Have been trying to connect the dots
Something a person with leg cramps and edema, it is a good idea to see a cardiologist. It could be you have varicose veins. I take magnesium and potassium every night but the symptoms continued. A friend told me this advice and I took heed. I have had vein surgery. It’s out patient. I drive there and drive home. Not a bit of pain. So, my advice, while I still take the magnesium and potassium, it’s the vein surgery that fixed the problem.
Also, allergy like symptoms. After adding extra potassium daily, all allergy symptoms left. Come to find out, it was potassium deficiency all along! My life is so different since I discovered that my body does not hold onto potassium normally.
@@prettydalila mostly extreme allergy/sinus symptoms and exhaustion. I had allergy tests done and it showed nothing, so I was REALLY frustrated. Just so happened that I started keto and someone suggested adding electrolytes to my water to help with 'keto flu' and I noticed, doing that for two weeks, I'd had no symptoms of allergies and had energy for the first time in forever. Blood tests narrowed it down to chronic low potassium.
I can totally relate to what's been said. Calf cramps in the middle of the night, aches and stiffness in the morning. If you're on a ketogenic diet or low carb diet, you need to keep your levels up because you will flush a great deal of potassium through urination. Daily requirements are 4,700 mg. A quick and easy way to get as much potassium as possible is to take a no salt salt substitute.
I would suffer with muscle knots and major cramping for years, rubbing them out would help, but, once I started on a daily potassium magnesium supplement, these symptoms have completely gone. Relief!!
this is a great video!! i suffer with a high hr all the time, muscle twitches, severe weakness that stops me from walking, waking up during the night short of breath.. my potassium always drops or is barely in range! i didn’t know how important it was until all week i’ve been supplementing and i feel so much more alive i can do more!!! the potassium test the doctors use is very inaccurate!! it’s only used to save ur life it’s not optimal levels
What you are explaining doctor is so very true. You just hit the nail on its head. My mother was suffering from potassium, but the cause did not show up directly. For a while she was complaining about dizziness which they were considering too vague to explain. Her levels were sneaky and fooled her doctors. I thought it was her diabetes at first, but it turned out to be her potassium due to nutritional deficiency. She was not eating properly because of other reasons. They could not point to the reason so easy until the numbers started " staring at their face " literally. The human body is indeed amazing. God bless you for explaining this important information to the public.
Hey! This might come a little too late, but it's sounds like moma got better which I am very happy to hear. I've been having the very same journey as you describe, especially about the whole dizziness thingie... I eat alright tho and have found a huge benefit from topical magnesium sups. My problem is that I love to drink water, and lots of it. And then suddenly came the dizziness... so I put one and one together. Any thoughts or insights you can add? I've just found a tomato soup that should contain 75 % RDI of potassium per 100 grams or 1 DL, which equals 3,5 ounces. I'll try this for some time and see if it goes away. This wobbling is really freaking annoying!!
@@broadbandtogod I have yet to find any remedy.. I’ve noticed that when I eat it sort of goes away and I feel fine. With this keto thing for the past few months, and me already being pretty skinny, I think I might be unintentionally starving myself… I’m trying to figure out how to safely exit keto and reintroduce carbs like rice or quinoa, etc.. so I can start packing on weight. I’m thinking that might be my problem right now
@@taradikoff123 I gradually went into keto by trial and error. Finding out about carnivore has been very useful and has produced beneficial desired results. I never had a grossly overweight problem but have removed the extra body fat that I didn't need with this method of eating. I too have been concerned about the possible loss of too much weight. I've simply increased the frequency that I eat in order to provide more calories. For me personally I will not go back to starchy carbs because that will give me again the crashing, fatigue, bloating etc etc. I have found the electrolyte drops and the daily minerals by keto Chow to be extremely useful. If I drink plain water it goes straight through. A physician told me one time be sure and put something in the water so that it will not flush your kidneys. I have found the addition of extra magnesium, potassium and sodium electrolyte mix very satisfactory. My body is absorbing more of the liquids rather than passing it quickly through and there's been a significant reduction in the leg cramps at night. I am 79, no known comorbidities.
Why it never occurred to me to consume enough potassium was probably due to being low in potassium. Everything you described is ringing all the bells for so many issues I have struggled with. Your information helps me in so many factual ways that I am bolder about making great decisions to take care of myself. Thank you for the information you sort through and prepare for us.
Yeah that is true.... what you said. I had no idea how to help myself because I was so confused. And that makes it very scary!!!! Now that I'm balanced I can think about what I need....
Do you know if taking a multivitamin is good enough. I took a test and my doc said my potassium levels were fine but he said even if they say it's fine it could still be low. It sounds like the speaker said he eats food high in potassium no pills 🤔
I had a seizure due to low Potassium levels through a bout of Gastroenteritis. It got to day 6 when I was feeling much better, just sunken eyes and fatigue but had gotten my appetite back and had eaten a little, when the whole left side of my body became numb, my feet and hands were going into spasms and my speech became slurred. It was terrifying and so my sis took me to A&E where I had the seizure as the doctor was examining me. I spent the night in hospital wired to a drip. The doc told me I had just about lost my Potassium. I always thought that I would know if I was ever dehydrated, I’m no longer so complacent.
When I am low on potassium I get very little deep sleep! If you have those exercise watches that record your sleep cycle you can know when you are running low because you will have very little deep sleep!

I was diagnosed with low potassium about 20 years ago . The doc told me to eat bananas. My mother died from hypokalemia. She went into sudden cardiac arrest from her Potassium at the ER was only 1.8. This was a result of Lasix given to her as a quick fix for primary hypertension used as a water diuretic...Potassium is vital for heart function!!
Sorry for your mom:( i have the same thing i ended up at the er with afib when they did blood work they found out it was only 2.7 im scared i been using klor con m20 potassium chloride tablets if i stop it drops. Kidneys are fine they said no idea why its dropping
Agree! I almost died because of water pills my cardio doctor was wanting me to take and I called her nurse and told her-my blood pressure was extremely low everyday and badly dehydrated as well. She immediately took me off the water pill and said continue on with the prescription potassium . I am looking into taking it over the counter now.
My numbness was in my hands, arms, feet, legs then my face became numb. All of that had started with a headache that felt as if someone hit me in my forehead with a sledgehammer. I laid down to rest. Not sure how long but I got up and I threw up so much liquid. That I actually thought, where is this coming from. I was taken to the hospital and given potassium pills and also had to have three iv bags of potassium. Once I came home for 7 days I had to take potassium pills three times a day. I am very fortunate that I did not die!! I forget the name of the medication I was taking for my bones that I took for 1 year. I was never informed that it could and would cause hypokalemia. I live in Florida and I do a lot of gardening. When I think back to that day. I stopped sweating before all that happened.
I too had the stop sweating before mine took a drastic turn. I now am on all three electrolytes daily. Take them in my water. Cost effective I make my own pods.
I've put myself in the walk in ER over low Potassium, 3 times. Needless to say, not doing that again. Some individuals are more sensitive to low Potassium and Magnesium.
It’s interesting when you go to your primary care doctor with all of the symptoms and he sent a referral to a heart specialist. Also documented history of going to the urgent care clinic with severe muscle cramping in the thigh area and the lab indicated low potassium, never once did anybody bring up potassium.
Yes... I had the same deal happen... it is sad and scary. I'm not over it really but I'm better from information like this. I'm so very grateful for videos
Thank you for this! I get these symptoms if I'm not careful with diet. If I start getting heart palpitations, drinking a liter of coconut water seems to clear it up within an hour. Then I need to watch my eating and perhaps take a small potassium supplement for a couple of days. I preach potassium all the time to friends. They're starting to think I'm a bit wacky, but I see it as kind of the flip side of sodium. Yes, watch your sodium if you have high blood pressure, but also get your potassium! When I get low and get the symptoms you listed, my BP also gets pretty darned high for no other apparent reason. Thanks again for making something I can show doubting friends! 😃
The heart failure issue. My 2nd wife passed away at 45 years old (sleeping next to me.) The only theory after autopsy was "heart failure due to low potassium". Death certificate read "undetermined but not at the hands of another". Sandy was sick for quite a while. Recently had a small intestine ileostomy removed and reconnected. Everyone was surprised.
I am so sorry to hear this. 😢 Hearing this I will bring up my symptoms at my next dr.s visit because I stopped taking prescription potassium and my symptoms are now returning. I keep telling myself to just power through the symptoms, it is probably nothing. But low potassium really is not nothing. I will stay on top of this knowing now that it can cause heart failure. I wish you and your loved ones all the best and may your wife's memory bring you peace and comfort despite her short stay on this earth.
Thank you, Dr Ken Berry, for saving me when I'm about to fall down. I don't think people realize, what this man is capable of strengthening our health. Wishing you good health, prosperity, and long life. Enjoy and have fun. Thank you..
You hit the nail on the head with it with me I know this is a real problem for me but my problem has been doctors. I know my body has a real problem with potassium. Over the years every time I had blood work, I would be given potassium I finally said to the doctor that I thought I had a problem keeping or maintaining it. Naturally, he did a test and it was fine at that time but I knew that meant nothing. I have problems with my feet, and my legs. my hands, my heart twitches, and muscle spasms. I had been going to doctors for years asking what is wrong with me and they would say nothing is wrong with me but I knew there was and still is. I try very hard to keep my PT up but then I worry about too much. I really wish a doctor would believe me it has been a long lonely struggle. I am going to try this diet you have here wish me luck and thank you for this video. I am living proof that they, doctors and lay folks, think potassium is nothing to worry about it most certainly is
I’m in similar situation. I’m taking heart meds known to affect potassium. However, I have all the brutal symptoms of low K & Cardiologist said I had low K. Taking potassium citrate, gluconate. I’m being careful by taking 200 mgs /day. FDA says adults 4700 mgs /day. Sounds high.
I have a very high level of anxiety for all things medical and it often takes me several attempts to get through one of your videos but I do find them very helpful! Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you so much Dr. Berry, I’ve had those problems and my dr thought it was GERD. Got blood work done and found out my potassium was at 3.6 so right at border of low. I believe this happened from me taking thermogenics to work out for about 3 months. Extreme sweating and not replacing any of that, I would only drink water. I twitch I notice but didn’t think anything of it, one of first signs I got. Then I couldn’t lift the same weights what finally got me to the dr was feeling like I was having a heart attack. Hope my experience helps someone. Be blessed
I discovered when I had a knee replacement a month ago my potassium was at 3 ! They gave me 2 pills in the hospital and told me to take them daily and get blood work done in a week!
What's interesting to me, aside from lab work showing low levels, is that you can have normal levels of potassium (as well as magnesium) and still be deficient. Short of finding out you're low, it almost seems pointless to have these tests done. I've had no doctor EVER discuss this. They look at the lab results and if they're in the normal range, everything is hunky dory. Too many doctors don't get beyond the computer and delve into anything as a root cause as symptoms. Thanks for posting these videos!
Exactly my case, my potassium serum levels are fine. But thats the job of the kidneys to do that and they function fine, I;d have kidney disease or faillure if bloodserum shows levels out of range. What matters is the amount that end up in tissues. I have just figured out I might be deficient on potassium and thats not my doctor who helped me to figure that out, but almost 2 years of writing down every single symptom and when, how and why it occured and everything that makes me feel good only to see patterns. And those patterns point towards hydration issues. I already dosed up on magnesium because I need it to level up my vit D. But still palpitations, arrhytmia , sweating, bloating, trembling... I tackle now the potassium because I thrive on eating certain foods that apparently are high in potassium (and copper). Taking electrolytes daily and when needed (sweating) is a gamechanger. I will soon go abroad to have cellulair test and or hair analysis on at least potassium done, the latter can tell me even if it was potassium as it shows the status for at least previous 6 months.
Dr. Berry, you probably covered this in another program, but with everyone now worrying about their low potassium I would like to bring the dangers of potassium that is too high to everyone’s attention. I wound up in ICU for 3 days with a serum potassium of 8. They actually checked it twice because they thought the lab girl did something wrong. I felt terrible with my main reason for going to the Dr was terrible muscle weakness. My arms & legs were literally like a cooked spaghetti noodle. It was crazy. There is no quick antidote for this either, they give you some horrible stuff to drink like banana flavored chalk & you literally have diarrhea until your levels are back down to normal. Since you are too weak to get in & out of bed all that diarrhea is terrible. This prob was caused by a perfect storm of meds I was on. I am now totally paranoid of too much potassium, but I do try to eat potassium rich foods. Listen to you all the time, GO DOC!
Thank you for sharing that. J Ted and Linda Simpson. I have heard that warning before, but did not know what symptoms of high potassium looked like. Be well, and thanks again!
In the ICU where I worked as a nurse we often had pt.'s be admitted with hyperkalemia. This can cause cardiac arrhythmia's which can be life threatening. We use cocktails of kayexalate which is ingested and binds to the serum potassium and is passed in diarrhea. Also insulin, glucose, calcium and for really high levels a hemodialysis treatment is done via a dialysis catheter inserted into specific veins.
Thanks for mentioning this J Ted and Linda, I bought some powdered potassium citrate supplement and I've been researching about how to best take the powder supplement which comes with tiny scoop. I opted out from capsules because they all have a bunch of other stuff, no more gelatin capsules for supplements I guess, apparently, anyway. So I did discover that too much potassium is extremely dangerous and I have held off on supplementing based on a little bit of fear of over supplementing. This video does clarify that some potassium supplementation is probably beneficial to carnivores, maybe even essential. But I will tread lightly and keep your warning in mind. Thanks for chiming in. Very important information for people to be aware of.
Oh my gosh!!!!. I have about 80% of these symptoms and my "doctor" never explained this to me. Too bad I can't forfeit my dr visit co pays and give them all to Dr. Berry!
@@meme-tf8ih ... not ALL doctors are useless! eg Dr Berry (MD), Dr Sten Ekberg (Ch.D, former Olympic decathlete), Dr Eric Berg (Ch.D), etc ... seems that Med School spends 2 weeks on nutrition, out of a 7-year training program, (sponsored by Big Pharma...?)
@@meme-tf8ih yep , most regular doctors are and their blood tests to check for deficiencies are useless , because they set the standard too low On things you need .
I'm glad I found this video. A few weeks ago, I stopped consuming my daily banana and orange juice to avoid the sugar and continued with berries and half mango that I've always liked as well. But around that time, I started having heart palpitations at night while trying to fall asleep! I've had a palpitation before, maybe a couple a week, but it suddenly became, 2 or 3 or more per minute or so! . I'm not one to be overly anxious, but this has been rather concerning. I do have a potassium supplement and am going to take one NOW. Some nights there have been no problems, and I did have an occasional banana. It's very hot, and I do sweat-inducing yard work, so my potassium may be low. I also have high blood pressure, which is probably more stress related than diet, as I care for my elderly mother. I'm going to check the label on my Emer-gen-C supplement for potassium content. I do get pretty irritable in the summer and feel weaker than when it's not so hot. I'm feeling hopeful that there's a solution now. I have some edema which might be from the Amlodipine which I'm going to ask my doctor about, to see if there's anything safer and doesn't cause edema. UPDATE: palpitations at night have all but disappeared after upping my potassium. I purchased some Gatorlyte and low sodium V8 in addition to bananas and oj and avocados.
Initial symptoms for me were dizziness, brain fog, swelling in ankles/foot, and muscle twitching. More serious symptoms were hypersensitivity to touch (wearing clothing made me feel as if I had sunburn), abdominal pain, and visual hallucinations. Had to go to A&E for emergency treatment of 2 x drip and 3 x medication. It happened again, and I ended up in hospital again. Same treatment received. I'm still being monitored, and I'm hyper aware of how I'm feeling. Fingers crossed, it doesn't happen again.
@@staceyclark8796 not sure. The doctors couldn't give a definitive answer. At first they suggested it could have been due to taking Omeprazole but that has since been discounted.
It's amazing that most doctors look at your bloodwork levels and tell you that you're fine. But, in reality you're not. One of my doctors treats the symptoms, not the levels.
My doctor didnt. I also have all normal bloodwork, including potassium levels. I have been sick for almost 2 years and been terrified Im dieing because the fatigue is so intense so scary sometimes. But they think its all in my head plus anxiety and they do nothing not even refer me to a specialist. I bless my genes of very strong resiliant hearts but there is only so much it can handle, Im already since early September on the list for a 24 hour heart monitor, but yeah my bloodwork is fine and that of others is not so I probably never end up with one until its too late. Still my doctors dont take me serious, luckily I know now what to do when I feel such fatigue creeping up on me, but reading through the comments, I went through the needles eye a few times just how I felt :( Been to ER few times as well and ecg is fine and again the bloodserum levels of potassium too. I swear I am deficient on potassium after watching this, together with the evidence that my best remedy is munching away a box of lettuce, eating apples, taking electrolytes, grapes and high fiber cookies. This madnes of doctors not doing their job needs to stop. I was scared of taking potassium supplements but I will take them now added to a lot of potassium rich foods. And I will celebrate if this was all the reason why I felt more dead than alive for almost 2 years now and I cured myself because doctors didnt want to.

@@brendabowers2320 true I have told my doctors here many things they never heard of, like active B12 they have no idea what that is... Im still feeling Im getting better and better, pretty sure the potassium was all the cause as I didnt suffer first time all summer after 2 summers of hell. Though last few days I feel like SIBO is creeping up on me, as my intestines are all over the place currently. But doctors... another 5 weeks wait to see them and of course they just send you away in the meantime, with the tip to take laxatives Of anything I need its not that. I already tested myself for constipation, good old corn kernels never lie, they come back out as scheduled within 12 hours often sooner. I guess Im my own doctor here again :) but I got this. As always. By the time Im back to full health I should be certified to be a functional doctor as I did all the work myself. :P Oddly few days ago marked one year after my last ER visit and the hospital decided to call and ask me if I still need the heart monitor. I just said no Im still alive, I survived when I needed it. Go save someone elses life who needs it more than I do.
Dr Berry, would it be ok to say you're my Doctor ? As you have given me more good accurate advice on health care in the last month than I have had from my own doctor ever. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the video. I eat a high potassium diet and I still measure low. Since April my heart raced alarmingly 3 times. EKGs don't point to a problem. I'm 71. Low potassium and low sodium are the only problems that show up on a physical. I need no pharmaceuticals.
Not really. It all really does boil down to what we are exposed to (toxicity levels), and what we’re not getting enough of (nutrition). Don’t try to cop out with that excuse. It is not a valid excuse to do nothing. :)
@@MariaWalker-qo3vi What are you talking about? You obviously misunderstood my point. When I got sick I went to so many doctors and let's just say their level of competence, problem solving skills, empathy, and overall knowledge were severly lacking. I'm not saying they have it easy, it's the system that's broken.
I just ordered potassium and I don’t think I need it. I feel amazing. I can climb 3 flights of steps and not be winded. I can go down steps with a 25lb baby without holding on at 56. Carnivore is magic!!!!! I do need extra salt for sure. Always have. I drink lots of water. I’ll get dehydrated quick. Thanks Dr Berry, your voice has changed my life!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much, doctor. I used to have muscle cramps. I've been drinking young coconut water after my morning walk 3 times a week for 2 months now, and my cramps have gone. Young coconut water is very rich in mineral especially pottasium and magnesium.
I am so thankful these Potassium videos are being posted. I'm educating myself on taking Potassium dealing with have to take chemo meds, meditate and just staying overall lacking strong intake. Of course going over it with my primary Dr. So as not to get confused. Thank you so much for explaining the constipation and muscle spasms!
Careful with getting potassium via a salt substitute product. I was using a modest amount to flavor food and after about 9 months it began to cause serious heart rhythm disturbance in me.
Thank you so much for this video. I had 3 of the symptoms which includes heart palpatations, constipation, and numbness in my fingers and toes. I finally found my problem
I went to the ER last week as I could tell my potassium was low (Crohn's)..Blood test showed potassium at 2.8..on my second 4 hr potassium infusion, I suddenly went into cardiac arrest..scariest moment of my life..Low or high potassium is not joke..if you feel like something's not right, get checked out 💚
I recently had Hypokalemia with a potassium of 2.4 due to extreme watery diarrhea. I had only 1 of your 7 symptoms which was fatigue due to fluid loss. We discovered I had food poisoning and again, only symptom was diarrhea. No abdominal pain, no fever, no nausea, nothing. This was after 6 days and 17.5lbs weight loss.
That's why anyone suffering from extreme food borne illnesses are treated with IV Fluids. IV fluids have electrolytes. If it's not super severe, you need to drink water with electrolytes to rehydrate your body with the right concentration of electrolytes
Doctors in our town have told me not to take vitamins, all they want to do is medicate and medicate again to counteract the problems the first medication has caused. I am a firm believer in taking extra potassium. I looked it up and the number one high blood pressure medication is potassium based. Thanks for spreading the word, it will share your video as well.
I have low potassium at times. One time, I went to the ER, because I had a. LOT of pain & muscle spasms, all over my body. They did the blood work, and that came back with low potassium, so they. had me take a potassium pill. The doctor also told me that my potassium was at the"critical level".. They also did some other tests, including an ultrasound of my legs, to see if there was any blood clots.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. I’ve been miserable the last few weeks and could not figure out why. I had just about every symptom you called out. I just happened to have some electrolyte drops in the house and added it to some tea last night. OMG!!! What a difference!!! I feel SSSSOOOOO much better. Amazing how just a few drops can turn things around overnight. Thank you, thank you, thank you 💕🎉💕
All makes sense. I've been keto for a few years now and generally don't have any issues regarding electrolytes. Im not overweight and am healthy. However whenever it got hot or when we go on holiday, generally to a European island in the heat my body swells to ridiculous levels. Not visibly I may add around normal areas like feet and ankles but fingers and bodily do clothes don't fit well etc. and it drove me mad trying to figure what this was about. In these instances where we went getting fresh and potassium rich foods seemed to be the downfall of the hotel and this reflected hugely in my health and comfort. Now aware I can resolve it easily but for a long time this baffled me. Bx
The difference is: if the muscle spasm occurs DURING exercise then it’s likely to be potassium deficiency. If it occurs AFTER exercise then it’s likely to be magnesium (I watched Thomas de Lauer’s video on the signs of potassium deficiency)
Thank you... I have low low potassium.. my doctor increase my medication to treat it. Now my potassium levels will be higher I hope. You was very informative 😁
Thanks. i needed to hear this, because I am a dialysis patient. And I am always wearing about keeping my pottassium down, and I read labels on pretty much everything I buy, Keeping it down has never been a problem, but I have been low a few times.

I was very low in potassium....it actually caused me to end up in the Cardiac Unit at the hospital. They diagnosed me with Tachycardia and made me drink potassium shakes once an hour. My heart rate went over 200 beats a minute. Thats setting still and not moving. It was very scary....😭
June Howard I went thru something similar landed in ER. My HR was 150 they diagnosed me with AFIB. Mine has hit 200 a couple of times but I’m finally figuring it out it’s potassium, salt and magnesium deficiency. It is so scary and it worse when the weather is hotter because you don’t realize how much your sweating. Stay hydrated with minerals is key.
Same happened to me too! Ended up at the ER with 220 heartbeat, very irregular, it was all over the place for hours, and finally they gave me a cardio version. I have AFIB and have to take Metoprolol. Unfortunately the irregular heartbeat, and palpitation comes and goes, sometimes is very scary, and it's always unpredictable, when and how long does it stay... I feel, like I will pass out, and have strong pain, cramps in my neck in the lines of the arteries, and my chest is moving hard from my strong heartbeats, I can hear them... really bad...

He told me to drink it…I did…15 minutes later most of the insanity stopped…it was extraordinary…by afternoon my heart rate was a steady 125…I will be seeing my doctor for sure..but it’s clear that my problem was most likely low potassium…so you might want to get that checked too…
@@patd.3368 yes, when I was at the ER my potassium was slightly lower than normal and my blood glucose was a whopping 108, despite me being on keto, it seems to me that stress was likely a culprit here considering I, 2 days later, had blood taken again. Everything was in line and blood glucose at 86. I have since started eating a lot more, and making sure to try to get as much nutrients as possible. Thank you for your response. What did the docs at ER do for you btw? CT scan? MRI?
Ahhhh, finally an answer to my odd symptoms. I was also, weird as it sounds, vibrating, or that's what it feels like. The vibrating sensation in my chest and legs along with the pain and numbness in my toes finally went away when I added extra potassium to my electrolyte drinks.
I had that same buzzing vibration inside my ab area.... I was VERY LOW IN VITAMIN D3. After I got it up the buzzing was gone. THANKFULLY this was in 2008
Yep. Got ‘‘em all, and blood levels show normal. When I supplement with Keto Chow drops, the symptoms go away. Even saw a cardiologist for heart palpitations and they said it was normal and take more magnesium.
Great stuff! all the things I have experienced in the past. twitchy eye, muscle cramps, aches in the morning etc.... Not since I've been on keto, fasting and eating pure whole unprocessed foods. eat your greens, avocados, brazil nuts, wild caught salmon and you'll free of these symptoms

Had all the symptom in my early 50s going downhill fast, Ditched Statins and all pharma drugs 4 years now incl those for sinus and Athma and all pain meds. after going healthy keto. Health has never been better post 30s.
It is extremely difficult to meet your daily potassium requirements (some sources say you need 3500mg daily and other sources say 4700mg daily) with diet alone. But one tip my doctor gave me is that many foods ending in "o" are potassium-rich, such as tomatoes, avocadoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes. Salt substitutes usually are high in potassium, and I've also used a powder-form potassium supplement, but the tast is horrible so I can only bring myself to use them on food that has enough flavor to mask the taste. It's just nasty! I once had to drink a liquid potassium supplement at the ER when my blood level got too low, and that was the worst stuff I've ever tasted.
If you're still doing the powdered potassium, you could buy empty capsules and fill a bunch in the same sitting and take those with your meal instead of sprinkling it on or into foods. Bulk Supplements sells both the products and the empty capsules. I believe they still sell a scale that helps ensure you add an appropriate dose to the capsules.
Huh? It's easy to meet your daily potassium requirement. I have high potassium and really have to watch what I eat to get the max 2000 mg of potassium, and even then I often go over. I could easily reach the 3500-4700 mg (for people with kidneys that function normally) if I ate what I wanted to eat (I had to cut out beans, potatoes, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, and all the good stuff like that). For example, an avocado has 900 mg of potassium, so if you ate four (which I've done in one sitting; it's very hard only to eat one), that's 3600 mg right there.
I use coconut water as an emergency potassium supplement, but it's expensive to use daily for getting the RDA! And all the veggies needed make me ridiculously full. It's tough!
@@randomcommenter935 Good idea; the potassium I bought actually is the Bulk Supplements powder, but it seemed like it would be impossible to get it into capsules. I will investigate. I should still be taking it.
I was numb in both hands every morning earlier this week. Had stiff legs and at first thought it was from the cold. When my heart began to palpitate yesterday, that’s when I knew. I was also irritable 😡
I've suffered with palpitations for the better part of my life, I currently have five stents and I'm a 62, I've had many stress tests, cat scans holder monitors event monitors and I tell my cardiologist every time I see her and she asks me how I'm feeling, my reply is always the same, I have the usual skipping or palpitations, sometimes my heart starts beating like crazy all in a matter of a few seconds, the only way to describe it is that it feels like somebody is squeezing it it's hard to describe, I sometimes feel fatigued after but most times there are no after effects. I was diagnosed with PVC's and PAC's, I've been told repeatedly that it's not life threatening but when it happens it doesn't feel like it, I've learned to I've with it, my doctor used to tell me to eat a banana or drink some orange juice for potassium, I take a potassium supplement I buy over the counter, it's..99 percent I think, I think it helps. Don't forget also you lose potassium when you urinate.
OMG I've had muscle weakness and mental fatigue nonstop for 10 years. Serum potassium was 3.4 so my doctor said potassium is not an issue. I need to do more research into this now.
I went to my Dr over a year ago and showed her a video of my face twitching and spasming and She told me magnesium deficiency. 2 years later and I still have spasming every now and then.

Same! Freaky experience.
and what's scarier is when the value are within "normal limits" but one is still deficient...the CELL is what is not observed on ER labs.... you had to be SERIOUSLY depleted through lack of hydrated, proper nutrition, etc.
WOW! They practice, you know?
It is truly up to us to do our research and take care of ourselves! ❤
As someone who has abandoned the Healthcare profession, you are correct.
Same for me. The metoprolol didn’t help. I stopped taking it after I began understanding what were actually need to be healthy and haven’t had palpitations in approximately three years.
I’m a former nurse please understand that every prescription Dr. prescribe count as money into their pocket and Big Pharma business it’s about 💰
Going thru chemo for breast cancer and my doctors keep putting me on potassium pills saying I'm low...I don't have ANY of the symptoms mentioned and I'm doubtful that I need as much as they're prescribing.

Thank you so much for sharing this! ❤
Just found out that my potassium was critical low…and I was having heart palpitations…they gave me potassium pills and started felling good instantly…woke up this morning felling like I could run miles…didn’t know that was so important to your heart..🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Who gave you those potassium pills and how many milligrams were they?
@@amandaclark2340 ,
Restless legs are more of an iron deficiency, I think.
Glad you’re feeling better. Thank you for sharing.
Can high pitasdium cause muscle cramping
I didn’t know that was seriously serious.
Thanks for reminding and warning us!
Holy cow. How does one get such low levels?
Did you cognition fully recover?
please forgive me this legnth of comment. i am very passionate about potassium topics.
i have had potassium issues since 2011.
the first time i thought it was the flu. i went to the small "bandaid hospital" er to get a shot for the nausea. they did labs and then swung the curtian open with 2 giant pills and 2 bags of iv fluid. i asked what it was all for. they said my potassium was low and i was being admitted. i asked what that meant and they said that i could have a heart attack at any moment (1.7!)~ not a hospital meant for life threatening situations.
fast forward thru the years of being told, "i don't know why it is low...." nothing else is wrong. it is the diuretics you are taking. you must not be taking your potassium. your potassium is normal now, and hours later recheck and rushing to hook the iv potassium. being emotionally and mentally abused when i went t o er and then transferred every. single. time. to the psych rooms.
cannot tell you how many times i litterally lost my mind because no one knew. (until 2015 turns out...)
i thought maybe i was doing something, started questioning myself if they were right. how many times i was told when i swelled up 5-40lbs pretty much overnight that it was not swelling, i was just fat! i knew it was swelling because once given my diuretics back it most times came off as fast as it went on. i also cannot breath or function when swollen. even the bottom of my feet get so bad i cannot walk without crying or collapsing.
fast forward again, April 2020. i was in the mental hospital. i had them check potassium (they were familiar with me). i was transfered to the main hospital twice. it was the second time that they got the on call nephrologist on board.... who happened to be one of the best. he looked in my files and found in 2015 that my then nephrologist and endocrinologist ran some tests that came back extremely abnormal. no one followed up. the endo accused me in the note saying i was taking too much diuretic and not taking my potassium like i should and ignored it.
the on call re did those and did some others and FINALLY told me it was not my doing, and that i was indeed not 'crazy.!" he said i have hyperaldostertone! given my history we were thinking most likely secondary. someone later said prob primary without adrenal tumor since around 36 yo i had what was thought to be a stroke. he said might have been a TIA since they could not comfirm that and when they accessed my power port i felt something dislodge and passed out twice that night.
so i still take my loop diuretics. i was switched from spironolactone to inspra.. which has been a game changer. i went from being admitted 3-5times per month to only 8-10 since 2020. i have only been in psych once....
my symptoms of it dropping or has dropped are
1. swelling, EVERYWHERE (more than 5lbs in 24 hr)
2. feeling faint
3. peeing a lot... like a potty hat full every 30 minues.
4. a distinct headache
5. weakness
6. sleeping a lot more, but also not being able to sleep for several days.
7. nausea
8. vomiting
9. some confusion in the moment
10. a lot more than usual whole body muscle spasms and bones hurting
11. the biggest one of all tho is when my suicidal thoughts become active with a plan and nothing triggered it.
i have only had one hospitalist who was an horrible. he refused to call my nephrologist and went back to telling me it was my fault and diuretics doing it. and if not on diuretics potassium would go back up and i won't need it. few hrs later they check, it is up. but few hrs more it drops lower than when i came in. and i had not taken diuretic for 3 days prior. i called my nephrologist who came to see me and fixed my meds.
side note. i cannot eat enough potassium to keep up with my loss.
WOW I don't know how anyone would go thru all of that and NOT be in a psych ward. I'm really sorry this happened to you. 💔
Feeling your ❤, take care and heal.
I started potassium tabs, and have been able to cut my HBP meds, resulting in a NORMAL BPressure.. never before in 30 yrs!!!!

I’m suffering from all 7 issues now what my veterans dr. Doesn’t give a damm doesn’t help on any issues
@@georgezink8256 Hi George. My husbands VA Dr. tested him for vitamin deficiencies and the VA sends him free vitamins. Maybe you can ask again.
WOW! Thanks
Berry. 🙏
Same. I also started waking up for no reason halfway through my sleep cycle at night.
99 twice a day is actually a really low dose
@EB-wl9st I just started today taking 99 twice a day and I swear it made me feel funny by evening like I was shot out of a cannon...maybe a tingly headache? I'm carnivore and that's the only thing I've done different and then felt different
Recommend dose of potassium is 3500 to 4700 mg a day. According to one doctor. I am researching it now.
Wow! I’m way over a trifecta on this! Doctor prescribed potassium chloride to treat my low potassium levels… excellent advice!

I struggled for 6 month having seizures everyday , no energy, it got to the point I had to admit defeat and go to the hospital…. My pottasium level was at 1.1 the doctors said a few more hours I would be dead, a year later my body still won’t hold it in my body at all but I’m doing much better
I've read that low magnesium can cause potassium to not be absorbed properly
My brother passed away from low potassium, September last year he had blood work done twice, first one was 3.1 second one was 2.9 , both came with a warning to the dr that it was low, he started radiation on October 18, at which time it was 2.6 . Dr signed for the results that night, but waited till Saturday morning to call him and tell him to go to pharmacy and pick up a drug because she was concerned that it was to low. Well that evening at 5:45 he died. Autopsy showed his potassium was 2.0. If only she would have called Monday night, damn good chance he would still be with us, RIP Broski (Roy)
I'm so sorry to hear that, that's awful. I hope you're coping OK. I also lost a sibling myself. 🙏🙏❤❤

For years and years, my potassium levels would come up low. Then one day a pulmonologist finally explained to me that frequent Albuterol use can cause it. So if you use your inhaler often, remember to stay on top of your potassium levels too... As most Americans are deficient in potassium as it is already!
Thank you. I did not know that.
Thank so much for this!!
What did you feel like when you were deficient? And how did you not develop a worse issue with continued deficiency?

What kind of symptoms were you having?
@@prettydalila mostly extreme allergy/sinus symptoms and exhaustion. I had allergy tests done and it showed nothing, so I was REALLY frustrated. Just so happened that I started keto and someone suggested adding electrolytes to my water to help with 'keto flu' and I noticed, doing that for two weeks, I'd had no symptoms of allergies and had energy for the first time in forever. Blood tests narrowed it down to chronic low potassium.
Potassium is a water soluble and is flushed out with waste. Bulimics die of heart attack because the lose to much liquid and potassium.
I read that too and it definitely helped me in the allergy relief. ❤
Relief!!
Dr. Berry, what food has potassium? Please help !

What have you been supplementing with?
Hey! How are you? What potassium do you consume
What potassium do you use?
What you are explaining doctor is so very true. You just hit the nail on its head. My mother was suffering from potassium, but the cause did not show up directly. For a while she was complaining about dizziness which they were considering too vague to explain. Her levels were sneaky and fooled her doctors. I thought it was her diabetes at first, but it turned out to be her potassium due to nutritional deficiency. She was not eating properly because of other reasons. They could not point to the reason so easy until the numbers started " staring at their face " literally. The human body is indeed amazing. God bless you for explaining this important information to the public.
Has your mother started supplementing potassium since?

Yes , you need to take both together , because you can deplete the other mineral when just taking one .
It’s interesting when you go to your primary care doctor with all of the symptoms and he sent a referral to a heart specialist. Also documented history of going to the urgent care clinic with severe muscle cramping in the thigh area and the lab indicated low potassium, never once did anybody bring up potassium.
drink electrolyte water. it is amazing how quickly that can help
Yes... I had the same deal happen... it is sad and scary. I'm not over it really but I'm better from information like this. I'm so very grateful for videos
My Dr is useless if it falls outside his parameters of his metric or standard of care.
Most Doctors are incompetent and don't care!
Be blessed
@Origins .0000 it’s called alpha lion
What did you discover? And how did you combat your low potassium at that point?
@@taradikoff123 blood test showed it, and I started taking potassium medication
@@cesartinoco9890 .
Many of the signs are the same as magnesium deficiency...which isn't surprising since the electrolytes work so much together.
I discovered when I had a knee replacement a month ago my potassium was at 3 ! They gave me 2 pills in the hospital and told me to take them daily and get blood work done in a week!
That bonus sign actually happen to me. They diagnosed it as Paresthesia. The nurse did mention i was low on potassium and sodium chloride
My sister had very high potassium and low sodium and they diagnosed her with Addison’s disease
@@queens6583 Thank you for sharing your experiences regarding people in the ICU with hyperkalemia.
Berry!
I only go to doctor once a year for blood work. I find them useless...God forbid they think out of the box.

Bananas and oranges are not really a good source of nutrients. Watch Dr. Berry's videos about good sources of nutrients. He has several.
I hope you're taking potassium supplements by now and eating foods high in potassium.
Your body needs 4,700mg of potassium every day.
What caused your potassium to be so low?
@@staceyclark8796 not sure. The doctors couldn't give a definitive answer.

Thanks for the video.
I eat a high potassium diet and I still measure low. Since April my heart raced alarmingly 3 times. EKGs don't point to a problem. I'm 71. Low potassium and low sodium are the only problems that show up on a physical. I need no pharmaceuticals.
I wish there was a reliable home test for potassium levels.
What I learnt from my health journey is that everything can be a symptom of something and no one really knows.
Not really. It all really does boil down to what we are exposed to (toxicity levels), and what we’re not getting enough of (nutrition). Don’t try to cop out with that excuse. It is not a valid excuse to do nothing. :)

Bx
Sounds like the signs of low potassium are very similar to the signs of low magnesium. Muscle spasms and twitches, heart arythmia, etc. Jean.
The difference is: if the muscle spasm occurs DURING exercise then it’s likely to be potassium deficiency. If it occurs AFTER exercise then it’s likely to be magnesium (I watched Thomas de Lauer’s video on the signs of potassium deficiency)
Magnesium support your electrolytes and potassium help to control . Best result taking both …

Had All the symptoms mentioned severely on statins - along with muscle wasting. Still get them intermittently years after stopping. Thanks for this information. Really helpful.
Whats your condition now.sir?
Same here! I’m a female 55
Had all the symptom in my early 50s going downhill fast, Ditched Statins and all pharma drugs 4 years now incl those for sinus and Athma and all pain meds. after going healthy keto. Health has never been better post 30s.
Long-term use of statins (prescribed by his cardiologist after quadruple bypass surgery) led my Dad to an ALS diagnosis and eventual death.
Thanks
