I was in the ER the other night due to dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, tingling in my feet. They thought I had a clot due to leg pain. They did a cbc and found I was extremely low on potassium. They gave me IV’s and I feel lucky to be here! When I walked in the ER I could barely breathe. Heart rate was critically low. Thanks Dr Berg for talking about how important potassium is for our body. 🙏🙏

I've always been a healthy and active person. Recently I got a new job at a restaurant and I would sweat a LOT for hours and drank 2 liters of water a day. But suddenly, weird symptoms started arising such as low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, arrhythmia, chest tightness... I was so worried that it would be cardiac issues but blood work, x-rays and electrocardiogram would always come fine. Symptoms got worse and muscle tingling and cramps showed up too.
I was confused as to why I could have a potassium deficiency if I had a healthy diet and worked out too. Your comment was reassuring. Because this just came out of the blue for me as well.
I am still with the symptoms and started taking potassium + magnesium supplement and implementing more potassium rich foods in my diet.
How did you overcome your potassium deficiency?

I couldn't breath, I felt pressure on my diaphragm. I felt pressure or cramps on my chest. I felt weak with no appetite. Also, i had a dull pain in the lower left hand side of the back of my skull, behind my ear. I thought I had heart problems. After going to the ER 3 time in a span of a year and visiting my cardiologist multiple times, nothing was found. I also had an mri and cat scans on my skull but nothing. Finally, an ER doctor told me I was a little low on potassium, I began to consume avocados and salads and I felt better. When I stopped I felt the sams symptoms again.

One bottle (16.9oz) of Coconut Water (Vita Coco) is just shy of 1,000mg of potassium (20% of your RDV). Substitute one or two of these for your beverage throughout the day and watch how much better you feel after just a few days. He says that unless your kidneys have completely stopped filtering and your on dialysis, you need potassium and the kidneys require potassium in order to function properly. I have CKD stage 3 and he has me supplementing 1200mg a day, and to get the rest through food, but not to exceed 2500mg a day, BUT it makes all the difference. The one thing that immediately disappeared was the bubbly urine. My last visit to the docs, they said with a smile kidneys improved a bit. I had my potassium level drop to 2.9. I thought I was having vasovagal episodes. Finally, I was feeling faint in a store and got out quickly to go sit and get some air. But it was hot, and as I was sitting at a light on the highway trying to get home, I just felt like I was going to pass out and was having difficulty breathing.
I got myself pulled over down the road in the shade, and put my seat back to try to stop the faintness. Instead I just got terribly dizzy and it was harder to breathe. I finally called 911. The EMT swore I was just hyperventilating. I couldn't get full breaths. And wasn't breathing fast.
By the time I was in the ER and someone was checking me in, I could barely put full sentences in order. My thoughts just would escape me. Then it hit my digestive system which was totally whacked out for weeks afterwards.
Evidently your body needs potassium for anything to work right.

I don't eat greens as I am carnivore but I do use use salt substitute which is just potassium chloride on my steaks. Also potassium chloride is very cheap in 50 lb bags as it is used as a substitute for salt in water softeners. It has a high affinity for water so never mix your salt with potassium in your shaker as it will clump. If you use it in your water softener use only 1 bag at a time or it will bridge and you will not break it apart. Potassium by itself is an inedible metal so you should inform us as to the best form of potassium to use. I only assume that if we get our sodium from sodium chloride then we will get our potassium from potassium chloride. Please inform.

Are there ANY natural “substitutes” for blood thinners, i.e., Coumadin/warfarin?? I was born with a defective (aortic) heart valve (1960). First surgery at age 3; second surgery at age 13; third surgery/first mechanical valve at age 23; fourth surgery/second mechanical valve at age 54 (a “very extensive surgery”, the “root of the valve” was also replaced). I’m now 63. I’ve been taking Coumadin/warfarin since 1984!! I now have a small leak in the current valve, and a fibrillation. I started intermittent fasting earlier this year, and have lost 33 pounds (from 157 to 124). My overall health has been transformed to being able to babysit 3 of my grandbabies a few days a week!!
I cannot eat “leafy greens”, etc., because of the blood thinners (thickens the blood, could cause stroke). Are there any “natural remedies”, etc., that I could ask my cardiologist about?? I’m taking NAC every evening, and take milk thistle when I remember to take it with a meal (2 or 3 times a week) for liver health. My cardiologist is “on board” with the vitamins and supplements I’m already taking. I want to get some ideas/suggestions to ask him about at my next appointment at the end of October, if possible.

Then it went to around 64 ounces a day (the popular 8 glasses a day). Now it's being recommended to drink upwards to a gallon which to me is insane. Could this be from excess salt and low potassium levels keeping the general population from holding their water In the cells leading to an increase in the need for water?

It would appear that a lot of this reactionary advice is to correct problems caused by previous erroneous advice - such as silly food pyramids. A bit more potassium, and a bit more water are more likely to improve health for most people, while wholesale big changes are more likely to cause problems for a few. Correcting years of continuous high carb plant consumption may get quicker results from full carnivore, but seasonal eating of plants is more likely to be a good long term aim.

With some research, I was able to source potassium in the form of potassium carbonate and potassium chloride. At my new job I have to sit a lot and I have had a real problem with edema for years. Now what I do is: 2 to 3 times a week I mix 1 teaspoon of potassium chloride or carbonate into some water and then I add psyllium powder to absorb it. I drink it down and it will time release in my system as the psyllium passes. It's been 3 weeks now and the edema is completely gone after being a problem for several years. Thank you Dr Berg.

..and ironically, vomiting depletes the body of potassium. thanks keto flu for taking away one of the minerals i may need most in this time of physical distress. and thank you dr eric lee for not warning me about the keto flu as i go into ketosis right about the same time as i start my new job as a loader/unloader. i didn't know what was happening. i thought i had lyme disease. well, i encountered a youtube recommendation entitled keto flu. and now i understand. good news is this hell is only supposed to last for two weeks to one month!? but if i go back to carbs things will be even worse. and really dr, berg, i try to be funny, but i'm not mad at you at all, quite the opposite; you changed my life for the better. i had tried everything. i was a high-carb, snacks-in-between-meals, high-performance vegetarian, and i needed to eat frequently to keep my metabolism high, and i needed carbs as fuel for energy, so i had found through my research and verified through reputable sources. well if i was such a healthy and active vegetarian, then why am i 6'0 and weigh 240 lbs, and why does my belly keep getting bigger when i am cooking such healthy meals from scratch. and i had heard the keto diet explained before, it was lots of meat (which most dieters are all glad to hear) and get rid of those sissy fruits and vegetables. look at you and your little baby salad, get rid of that trash. keto it's like paleo but more carnivorous. and that's not what it's like. but they couldn't explain it because they didn't understand it. then i saw a video of yours and decided to give it a chance in case there were some sort of useful factoids i could ram into my noggin. well, you sir are a kind and intelligent man. respect. the way you explained it, or at least what i got from it, in a nutshell, was eat less carbs and eat less often. this was the opposite of what i was doing. okay, no problem. so i went from being the top 10 percentile of carb consumers to being a guy who says no to rice. i would have never said no to rice before. now it was easy. that's the crazy thing about this keto thing. once you cut out the carbs, the feeling of hunger doesn't plague you anymore, at least it didn't for me. anyways, it's been 3 weeks and i think i lost 20 lbs. so i eat breakfast later. i eat dinner earlier. i don't eat flour or sugar. i rough estimate of the glycimic index of all ingredients based on how sweet or starchy something is, and if i am in doubt i look it up. if its high i dont eat it. if its low, it's fair game. it's so freakin simple. life changing. i've tried everything, ran marathons, did the master cleanse, went vegan (a lot of vegan pizza, vegan ice cream, and diet sodas). i thought i was just a big guy cause nothing worked. and i was hesitant to try keto because i didn't want to have to start eating raw beef hearts and give up my precious vegetables. anyhow thank you for giving so many people this life-changing gift, and i hope you are blessed in kind. and damn you for not warning me about keto flu! just kidding. it really effing sucks though. imagine doing an 8-hour shift of physical labor, and being so thirsty, but if you drink water, you will get violently nauseous and run to the restroom to vomit. and i have heat flashes like a woman in menopause. bard ai didn't warn me about that in the list of symptoms. oh and constipation AND diarrhea. is that a before and after of the senna tea? because without the carbs i've lost the craving, i can go too long without food too easily (yes i know, this keto thing works too good!), i actually have to force myself to eat if the keto symptoms get too bad (and to prevent muscle loss). doc, when it's all said and done i am starting to look like a sexy piece of meat, which i had always found beyond impossible. if this continues i'll have the body of a greek god (or a roman god; don't want to be racist). anyhow, i can't thank you enough (and maybe warn a mofo next time). peace and blessings.

You need 4700 mg of potassium per day.
Your body uses your kidneys to return 90% of the potassium in your urine.
So you need to intake 470 mg…
This is amount is plentiful in animal products.
If you are type 2 diabetic your kidneys will pass more urine and do less filtering of potassium.
As noted in the video Insulin also causes a great deal of loss from the kidneys.
So remove carbohydrates from your diet, eat protein nutritional grams from animal source exceeding your BMI in pounds, drink just a few glasses of water, and walk a lot.
A 1# serving of animal meat is not 450 grams of protein. A pound of anything weighs 450 grams. A rule of thumb is 6 nutritional grams of protein per ounce of weight. This is roughly 18 in a 3 ounce or 100 gram serving. So if you weigh 100# on the BMI you need a pound of meat.
Eggs are wonderful sources of protein. The protein grams vary on the size of the egg. Jumbo eggs have (8) each.
You must eat more than (30) grams of nutritional protein at a serving.
As we age past 30 we need to eat more protein. Eat more protein than the minimum each day. Add protein as you age. Say 1% per year after age 30.

Potassium is sold in grocery stores as a salt substitute. It should be in the spice isle near the salt. "No Salt" or similar products are pure potassium. Read the label, one ingredient: Potassium. "Low Salt" is a mix of potassium and salt. You can sprinkle potassium on many foods and drinks in any amount you want. Following a tornado, we had to be put in housing by our insurance co. till our house was rebuillt. We were eating in restaurants and I started having very high blood pressure. Many trips to the ER, I started studying on your page taught me about it. I have a large beautiful plate of brightly colored vegetablles every morning, and Avocado. for breakfast now. I stay as far away from the whites as I can. I do still love ice cream, but I know it is pure poison, so I try to steer clear. Thank you for all your good information.

I've found, for myself, that a good way to quit something "bad" in your food consumption -- i.e., to overcome a food addiction (or "emotional eating", as some would call it), such as ice cream (which truly is a nutritional disaster, IMHO), is by substitution. Best done in a "cold turkey" way. Especially for something as diabolically bad as ice cream. Don't try to quit it gradually. Immediately replace it with another "buttery" (high fat) food treat, such as cream cheese. Gourmet cheeses, eaten slowly and intentionally savored, perhaps slathered with high quality (grass fed, organic, etc.) butter, with a little beef jerky on the side. Flavors that your mouth will love. Whatever's a treat for you, food-wise. Keto coffee, a.k.a. butter keto coffee might be another example. Half and half, sour cream, high fat yogurt of ultra high quality. Even a brief dalliance with occasional cheesecake. As long as you don't go getting addicted to something new. The key thing is to break the evil ice cream addiction. Break its back. Then celebrate your victory, and new freedom in your diet. I broke my long standing dark chocolate habit, after learning about how terrible oxalates were (from Sally K. Norton). I did it primarily through substitution: white chocolate for dark chocolate, then I gradually quit the white -- because its high sugar was undesirable, and it was an unnecessary expense. Not worth the supposed "pleasure". There are so many other foods to enjoy! We don't have to be a prisoner to any one of them. God provided us with a great many different foods to enjoy. All the best, on your health journey. Congrats on coming so far, already.

@@gentleoldmoviefan5680- Really good advice. Sometimes the texture and 'feel' of a food is just as compelling as the flavour. I find tea with organic heavy cream really helps me avoid ice cream and other treats. Cream cheese, chèvre, and sour cream are wonderful, too! I must admit though, I love a tiny bit of very dark, high quality chocolate! I just returned (cold turkey) to keto a week ago. I lost someone I love this year, and the 'emotional eating' really spiralled out of control. Glad to finally be taking good care of myself again. All the best to you!

I have to thank my mother for saving me at an early age; she didn't allow any soft drinks in the house and when we went on vacation we were only allowed on milkshake as a "treat".
It horrifies me to see so many people in the check out line, usually obese, and the foods they stuff into their fat slobbery mouths.

@@mutteringmalesome people have thyroid problems, hormone imbalances or other health conditions that might cause weight gain. Certain medications cause weight gain.
I agree that people should be more health conscious and make better food choices. In my opinion it should start with educating yourself on healthy food choices and then be disciplined enough to stick to your choices.
Another problem is affordability. Conveniently fast food/junk food is more affordable than buying quality meat and organic vegetables. Fries/chips make you feel full fast. Although it’s crap. Vegetables are not anyone’s favorite. Fruit juice is an alternative to fruit treated with added “chemicals” from pesticides, fertilizers and chemicals to preserve fruit.
I lived in a country where rice, potatoes, vegetables 1 sweet and 1 salty was served everyday. At age 45 we immigrated to Canada to a small town in Alberta. There is only one supermarket. Everything was almost double the price than in the nearest town that was 100km away. Fresh produce was not so very fresh anymore. Meat was crazy expensive. People worked long hours and would support A&W or Macdonalds on their way to work.
I don’t approve of junk food or bad food choices but understand why low income people buy the most affordable food.
We should not be judging others.

4 times as much potassium as sodium is needed(Potass 4-1 sodium). The average person has this switched😬. They usually have a sodium to potassium ratio of 1:4. They’re very light on potassium & very heavy on sodium intake🥴. Normal potassium level tests check the blood outside the cell. Only 2% of potassium reserves are present outside the cell. 98% of potassium is inside the cells & the tests don’t look there. A special test for intracellular potassium is needed to really see the potassium levels......
