Another interesting video. If you haven’t already done a video on it, it would be interesting to hear about fresh fish, particularly oily fish and its benefits and how that could fit with a kidney friendly diet. Keep up the great work.
@@thecookingdoc thanks, I look forward to it. In the U.K. they recommend oily fish twice a week for a healthy person (no CKD) but I suspect many people dont manage that so it will be interesting to hear your take on it in the kidney context.
My husband suffers from Membranous Nephropathy and your videos are the only resource we have found helpful and super informative!! We are having a hard time finding a doctor familiar with his specific kidney disease. They put him on a Rebuatuxin infusion therapy and he has completely lost his appetite and lost 40lbs in a few months! Any way you can give some good pointers on foods he can eat with his specific type of Kidney Disease, we are struggling to get the right answers. He is very young, 27 and I feel like most of this can be managed with the proper meal plan!
Helpful ,thank you. My husband has acute renal failure most likely from a strep throat infection in mid-March. His BP has been too high for.a biopsy. His BUN and Creatinine have been improving enough that they let him start Torsemide - he's very swollen from fluid retention. They sent him home yesterday (had been in hospital since Sunday) on 2 BP meds and his BP has been better at home. Doing a crash course on your channel since they gave NO instruction on diet. Kidney doc still wants biopsy but if his labs keep improving and BP keeps going down, we don't want to put him through a biopsy.
My first Cooking Doc video! Enjoyed the presentation. But for those of us with stage 4 kidney disease, you incorporate a lot of high-protein meats and foods like nuts. Maybe now and then you could take on the challenge of recipes that are low protein, low potassium, and low phosphorous. It's a touch combo, and we could use the help!
Here is a list of 15 low potassium foods that Dr. Blake Schusterman recommends in the video: Fruits: * Blueberries * Pears * Apples Vegetables: * Peas * Kale * Cabbage Protein: * Tofu * Canned tuna * Eggs Nuts: * Walnuts * Cashews * Peanuts Drinks: * Coffee * Brewed tea * Plain water Dr. Schusterman also discusses the nutritional benefits of these foods, as well as how to prepare and cook them. He also provides information on the recommended serving size for each food. Overall, the video is a helpful resource for anyone who is interested in learning more about low potassium foods.
Great video but what about beans? And, how to prepare them to give them a good taste since I cannot use salt or salt substitutes, broth and sausage for FLAVOR? TFS
Dr. Blake, Thanks for what you do it is definitely appreciated. Dr. David Unwin is stating that low carb and higher fats and protein can help your kidney function. He has some small studies in the UK. Any info you can share would be appreciated, I am not sure I think this is the correct thing to do. Again, thank you for what you do sir!!
I’ve been on the carnivore diet 4 months blood work in limits no meds just had it checked again and now my ldl is 520 non-Hdl 544 total cholesterol 598 glucose 69 triglycerides 120 the last 2 months I’ve been eating a lot more beef fat ,eggs and coffee with cream and butter should I be worried ? What direction or stay the same course, I’ve been feeling great no issues…I’m 66 and lost 30 pounds on this diet .
I'm a dietitian, and the first thing I do, is get all concentrated sources of protein out of a kidney patient's diet. I've seen doubling or more of GFR, when dialysis patients go on a full-tilt Kempner rice diet, and most people can be taken out of kidney failure IF (big if) their kidney malfunction was caused by too much dietary protein in the first place.

I found Magnesium supplements helped me tremendously with restless leg syndrome. Magnesium Malate was the type of magnesium that works best for me personally. I took it even during the night when I woke up kicking my legs around.
@@maryjones8726 This is my 2nd try... I mentioned where I got the magnesiums from and I'm guessing you tube deleted my comment. YT is frustrating sometimes. Anyway, I used 2 different magnesiums that worked well. I will mention both in case you care to try them. However, one is a soft chew and it contains sugar. I took it before I knew I had kidney issues. The vitamin capsule that I really like is NutraMedix, Magnesium Malate. The soft chew is MegaFood, Relax + Calm, Magnesium Citrate/Malate. The soft chew was convenient at night when I'd wake up, I could just pop it in my mouth and chew it. Now I'm concerned about the sugar content. Best wishes. Hope this helps.
I wish you defined what is a high potassium food and what is a low potassium food. May be like so much mg of potassium per 100g or 100 ml of serving instead of talking in relative terms
it depends on your kidney function and whether your potassium blood levels are too high or too low - both can cause cardiac problems! And please do not eat the yellow snow😂
Thanks for being the first person to get right to the point without a preceding seminar.
Thanks so much Alexander :)

I prefer the High potassium diet due to my high blood pressure
So confused one time ask for more potassium and now low potassium
For goodness sake, one says increase potassium another lower it 🙄 next they’ll be telling us it’s ok to eat yellow snow 😂😂
it depends on your kidney function and whether your potassium blood levels are too high or too low - both can cause cardiac problems! And please do not eat the yellow snow😂
What is considered low potassium? What is the milligrams that you should consume for low potassium?
Below 200 mg per serving is deemed a low potassium food/drink. 2,000 mg total per day, is RDA.
Huh....I guess "an apple a day" is true!
😅
Wait….what? Spinach absolute a purine and bad for gout and kidneys.
Since when are we trying to reduce our potassium intake?
Last I heard most people are potassium deficient.
People with moderate to severe chronic kidney disease need to restrict potassium in their diets.
😊😊
Could be, but others have too much potassium.
