This video is perfectly timed with the rainy WC in Glasgow. It really gives a good perspective how much these conditions change the whole race
so true
I'm terrified of racing in the rain, I wouldn't have even lined up. You're a better man than me.
hearing the hiss as everyone was letting air out their tires, knew it was going to be a slip-n-slide
@lexington476 sometimes you just have to make a business decision. There's just no use in potentially ruining your favorite kit, let alone your bike or health.
@@unsaved_ I like your username. exactly, I have had way too many injuries from cycling. I will not ride or race in the rain. now don't get me wrong I have been rained on during races, if it's just a short-term rain I'm fine, especially if it's a ride, road race or a TT.
One road race that does come to mind, was probably a three lap ~45 Mi total race, halfway through the first lap we get a good drizzle on us. I didn't drop out because the road was sketchy, I dropped out because my prescription glasses got so fogged up I couldn't see. And I'm so nearsighted, that taking them off would be of no benefit either 🙂.
But like what was on this course, no I would have passed. it's a sunk cost.
I love racing in the wet even though the peleton drives dangerous it's just the way you race for yourself in my opinion
@@malte0n oh I by no means bash people that racing the rain. I know the limitations of my courage. And while I consider myself a pretty decent bike handler, I know I'm not the best. Plus if my prescription sports sunglasses get covered in too much spray then I can't see 😎🤓🧐🤓🧐.
I raced on this course back in the late 1970’s. We went in the opposite direction and went behind the school between it and the football field. The school owned that piece of the road and they put a fence across it. We then went up on onto Crescent Street where the race is now. It was too much of a hassle to do that , so we moved elsewhere. ( Back that, at least in Illinois, we had to ware white socks over the ankle and hairnet helmets.)
I think Christian Vande Velde's father had a hand in developing this course. Cheers
Always good to have some perspective about what to do when the race goes wrong!
That was a fast start! Could you tell us about warming up in the next video? (How much time, intensity) thank I in advance jeff! Great video as always, greetings from Argentina
I was there for most of the day. It was a hot, clear, sunny day and then suddenly started to rain just before the elites. Terrible timing.
Start position can be everything. I've learned this many times. Another day; another race!
I had race in a parking lot that was all tight turns in the rain. Managed to get right up in the front in the lineup. The first lap was killer for people in the back of the pack, second turn there was a crash mid pack and that was it for the back 2/3rds of the field.
That’s my high school, Glenbard West. Wish I could’ve been there! My dad came up to you and didn’t know who you were. He was wearing a Mondrian styled shirt. He asked me later if I knew who you were 😆. I told him I’ve been watching you for years!
5:30 Thanks for not running over me! I chose a funny place to lay down😂
Will, less break dancing during a race please
thanks for giving me a thumbnail pic will 😅. brutal way to start the series
What caused you to crash? It looked like a straightaway in that area for the most part.
@@h31smanwater on the paint! A touch of counter steer and the bike was just gone, was not an expected place for me either
@tuna_buoy on it tuan! 😅
love your vids 🙂 cant help to wonder if you over there have most sonny/dry days riding, and tyre setup/compound/presuere in the rain is not as dialed in for everybody in the peleton. God race - many on the limit. You can spot loads of rear-tyre spidding ovver the painted lines here and there
So in the current situation as a roadie you should probably take 32- 45 mm summer tyres put them on your rims in order to race fast corners in pouring rain.
ideally go as wide as your frame allows in this case, but changing tires when the rain started coming down 20 min before the race is unfeasible. instead, i just let out a bunch of air, down to like 55ish PSI
@@NorCalCyclingyou tubeless or tubed? Just curious as to what people tend to run in races like this
@@MediumHalfHe’s tubeless now. Trying to run 55psi in tubes is deadly 😂.
I was waiting for a group jumping montage with some good chasing music.
Seems like "steady is smooth, and smooth is fast" is a more accurate shorthand? Minimizing power spikes (steady) = more efficient riding (smooth) = more energy available (fast).
You mentioned how call ups are so important. And you said at the end to "line up better". For those of us who don't race, what does this mean? How do you get "called up" so you can start at the front? Is it based on national rankings? Just how does one "line up better"? Is it first come, first served, and you can start closer to the front (i.e., get there early)? Exactly how does this all work?
depends on the event, but this one is pretty typical - top ten get called up to the front, the rest just depend on how early you get to the start line
Which bike ?
Did you use your Tcr on this race ?
Why isnt there the option for rain/ winter or summer / sun tyres for bicycles? Most roadies only take their aero road bike out when the weather is nice and Continental and Michelin are big Tyre brands. Pirelli too...
when the tires are that skinny it really doesnt matter.
It’s more about width , tube/tubeless and pressure. In challenging conditions like this you want as wide as your frame allows, tubeless, and low pressure. Something like 32c, tubeless, 55psi depending on your weight and “squish” tolerance in the corners
@@NorCalCyclingthat might be your best options with what’s available, but I agree with the OP, there’s no reason in principle a good rain tyre shouldn’t be available for a road bike
Point I was trying to make is there’s nothing inherently “rain/winter” about a race tire, it’s just a normal race tire that is wider, tubeless and lower pressure. They do sell ones for training, the conti 4 season for example, that have better puncture protection and durability but they’re not considered performance race tires. Hope that helps
bicycle tires are too skinny for hydroplaning to be a factor, and our tire temperatures do not get up high enough for rubber compounds to be a factor between the different weather and riding conditions. a race tire for a bike is the same, for dry or for wet.
then you'll get your "winter" tires being the ones with tread so you can gain traction, especially those you can screw in studs, for example.
Assume you’re using 28mm tires & lower pressure than normal hopefully?
Bike racing in the rain is hell.
Maybe discretion being the better part of valor, that day. Glad you stayed upright.
Absolutely!
Imagine if everyone except a few, at the front, were on rim brakes, and it was 2016, or 2017.
@Isabella-tf1qc there is no god
Fixed it.
Where to find that gps overlay? What’s the software?
it's called dashware
looks insanely dangerous, tbf
felt that way too lol
I'll race in the rain, but only if its coming down in sheets. This drizzle is not a good time.
Did a 100 mile RR in the rain once. The nice thing about that is you can pee in your bibs and nobody knows.
White lines, rain and brakes are an awful combination. There was a few back wheels skipping out on corners just in that short video.
Has Jeff mentioned what team he is racing for now?
just racing solo for intelli, back to mikes bikes now
Symphony of disc brakes 😂
2:16 Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast?
First time huh?
Peaking up to 1000 Watts every corner might be fast for a few seconds but its neither smooth nor fast since its not sustainable.
yes.
Alright! I’ll buy it!
Those dreaded wet paint stripes would be enough reason for me to back off, yikes.
0:37 wait, you didn't get a UA-cam Influencer call up 🙂...
lol no chance, also wouldn't accept it if they gave it to me
if I see dubious clouds in the sky, I won't go out for any bike ride, let alone a crit race! 😂 I refuse to accept such race took place without anyone falling.
I love racing in the rain!
do you like trashing your bike?? Its utterly ridiculous to do an amateur crit in the rain.
stopped racing in the rain as i got older, not worth it
No one anyone would be going that slow around corners if y'all were using rim breaks in those conditions
no one or anyone? rim brakes with carbon wheels are notoriously bad at braking, it's the worst combination
First you do when you fenish pound a beer
Don't mind riding in the rain. Road bike with 25mm can get a little sketchy my fx2 with 37mm unstoppable
I will race I race any way and I’m 11
Start position should NOT be as important as it clearly is at most of these intelligentsia races.
Any race where your start position on the line basically decides your finishing position is a race that is way too congested and it's dumb to set yourself up literally to fail before the race even starts.
Why set yourself up for failure? In these super technical courses, if i can't get to the start line ahead of everyone else, it's not even worth starting the race because it quickly devolves into exactly what this footage demonstrates: a wet, crash-filled roller derby st show where the break is going to get a full minute on the pack and they'll never be seen again. Stupid. It's not even a real race: only a race to get to the start line before the call ups. Such a dumb race.
hey Jeff, you appeared on today's GCN Italia video ua-cam.com/video/537jLkR66Ps/v-deo.html
cool! thanks for sharing
Average Dutch crit
no cobbles.
blah blah blah
