- Lionsgate has released the trailer for the Borderlands movie, starring Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jack Black as Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis and Kevin Hart as Roland. Here is my reaction, review & breakdown. Plus, Randy Pitchford has teased Borderlands 4 again!

Honestly, really strange choices across the board
I was hoping they were gonna Rotorscope it so It would look more Game like in which case the Age factor wouldnt be an issue, but it was like they cast this 25 years ago and the actor that they wanted for Roland died so they googled Black action adventure actor from big franchise and got Kevin Hart in Jumanji and hired him. As for Tina, I think she will be close but not not crazy enoough, like the Pisswash Gully scene where she adlibed "Its in my mouth" sounds more like a whine and not the chaotic, "its in my mouth. ITS IN MY MOUTH!!!" ithat it should have been. Also when she is laughing at CL4P-TP sh*ting bullets, she just covered her mouth and giggled, not the loud beaming ROFLMAO you would expect.
Then they casted JAMIE LEE CURTIS as Tannis? The lady who had a picture of a kid, tied up in a suitcase just hanging on her wall.

It isn't, though. It's tongue in cheek. It is purposely cast heinously. Kevin Hart is the opposite of roland. These casting directors aren't idiots. I'm honestly just happy they didn't do any gender or race swapping.
Actually for all that being said, Jamie Lee Curtis is a solid choice for Tannis.

Maybe they appear when she uses her siren powers and are otherwise invisible.
I feel like there was such a missed opportunity to use the trailer music for borderlands, i can’t even listen to No Rest for the Wicked without thinking of borderlands.

All the female characters were chosen because they don't please the straight Male Gaze. Moxxi looks like a homage to Rocky Picture Horror Show. I don't expect to see ass or teets(youtube friendly word) when it comes to Moxxi.
Tiny Tina looks like another 25-30 something playing a teenager. I don't know what to expect with her.
Jack Black will do his best with what he's given. Will probably be the strongest partof the movie.

Like right now i'm expecting it be a actually enjoyable comedy with a focus on market appeal but a complete waste of potential of what a borderlands movie could had been.

set and prop desingers: big fans of the games, or dedicated researchers.
costume designers: looked up screenshots, but didnt pay attention to any kind of continuity. also for some reason hated lilith's clothing/tattoo design.
producer/director/writer: googled a 5 minute plot summary, and who the most popular characters are to try to gain more views by using them, regardless of storyline continuity.
cadting director: put a list of available actors on a dart board. has never heard nor cared about the game.

I also hope to see Buttstallion. But on the other hand, it's unrealistic - there are not much extremely old horses available for filming.
I know the casting is not good, but honestly what is really killing it for me is the GoTG vibes. Going in that direction feels like it loses the souls of what makes Borderlands what it is. A lot of the humor feels off, and even simple things like Roland kicking Claptrap down that stairwell. I just don't think he would do that. Minor quibble, but when you so obviously have changed how characters are in just the trailer I can't imagine the rest of the movie will be good. The trailer is meant to build suspense and show off some good parts. I honestly think we have seen the best this movie has to offer already.
Hollywood production companies are going so ass backwards these days that they blow their budget on unnecessary big name actors and then wonder why they cant make that profit back 🙄

Things that concern me ... Atlas soldiers and opening a vault .thats borderlands 1 . Tina . Krieg and the firehawk symbol are borderlands 2 . What appeared to be mouthpiece from BL3 and yet no sign of brick or mordici . Just hope its a fun movie
Hollywood keeps refusing to give the audience what it wants. It can’t be that hard to find actors that look like the characters.
100,000 aspiring actors and actresses who would kill to get one of these roles, and we get the senior citizens trio?
I think the casting of the other vault hunters has made us oversensitive when it comes to Tina. Correct my math but the actress who plays Tina is 16 years old now, but the movie wrapped up mid 2021 when she was around late 13 early 14. True, She doesn't look like how Tiny Tina was depicted in the game but that's a unachievable goal because her design was so unique.
If this film flops the casting choices will definitely continue to haunt its history as we all wonder what if. The funny thing is I’m pretty sure the majority of fans of the game could have picked a better cast and we aren’t paid casting directors. That’s what is frustrating.
Even when the film is a great success, it will be haunted by the casting decisions. Let's say, we all love it and are waiting for the next movie. That movie might come around 2028, 2029, 2030?
Jamie Lee Curtis will be 72 then. Cate Blanchett 61.
But let's say, we still all love it and want to see part three... maybe in 2035, when Jamie Lee Curtis might be around 80 and Cate Blanchett nearly 70 and both will portray people who are at least 50 years younger!!!
In the case of this film, it would be soooo much better to take nobodies from the streets in L.A. and give them a chance, because the characters of the Franchise are often a bit awkward and stilted.
They should have casted a couple of people around their 20s or 30s, give some young actors and actresses a chance and plan ahead for a full franchise that might span over the next 10-20 years.
I think a lot of the casting is down to the names and the fact that each actor's pull will hopefully bring in their own fans. 🤔🇬🇧
I would've loved The Rock coming in as Brick or Salvador purely for the chemistry that the Jumanji cast has.

I think Gina Gershon looked amazing as Moxxi even though she's only in the trailer for a couple seconds. Since Moxxi is a motherly/madam type of character, you could envision her as being older than many of the other female characters in the game.
she is canonically quite old. just under a couple pounds of makeup. only one that makes sense to be cast old.
I thought the Borderlands franchise was dead after Borderlands 3, but this movie looks like they dug up the grave, cut the corpses head & legs off before staking it in the heart.
Considering the casting choices, I'm not far off.

Important lesson in how to kill a franchise before it gets started. Going to guess the reason that the original voice actor for claptrap wasn't used is because they don't want to pay them anywhere near what they are worth for future games.
First thing I noticed was it feels like Guardians of the Galaxy. M rated game adapted into a movie needs to be rated R. I’ll lose my mind if it’s PG-13
I expect it to be about on par with the first Suicide Squad movie. Which was not in any way, shape, or form a good movie, but it was a fun movie.
The Movie just turned the Game into a Suicide Squad mixed with the Guardians of the Galaxy in Mad Max.

My main confusion is on the age choices of main leads. Do you want this movie to successfully have a sequel, is it even reasonable to expect them to take part in a franchise that from your words is only the beginning? Was this casting pushed by the union to give them work before new talent?

I'm scared but excited for it. I'm gonna watch it regardless because of Krieg and Tina, and the fact we finally have a movie. I absolutely would have preferred better casting, but maybe the big names will draw more people into the games or something idk. I just hope they follow the lore
Actually, at this point in the story, Tina would be about 10. Remember that there are a few years between BL1 and BL2 where Tina is introduced.
i feel like the movie will be good as long as you dont look to far into the game comparison such as it following the lore and story, of course you could wonder "why tf do we have lillith, krieg, roland and tntina on a team instead of the original vault hunters" but it will be a generally good movie as long as you over look some parts from the game to movie crossing. Not just you. I love cate blanchet, tremendous actress, but she shouldn't be in a Borderlands movie let alone as a old Lilith. Every single person in it is so far past horribly miscast i don't know where to begin.😢

@@PunkRaider Thank you! I was starting to think I was the only one. Tiny Tina is not a whiny teeny-bopper. She is a sociopathic, murderous child that has managed to survive by losing her mind. This is just a brat - the eye rolls, the "it's in my mouth" whine (I mean, it's kind of funny - it's just not Tina). But the lack of a vocal growl when she goes full psycho - it's like they had never seen the original characters at all.
Everybody is hung up on the age of Cate and Jaine Lee - I couldn't care about the age - they just aren't right for the roles - though, I think Jaime Lee doesn't look too bad for the role of Tanis - the spirit is there - But Cate's Lilith... not feeling that. And Kevin Hart as Roland is just ridiculous - makes no sense. Nothing about him is anything like Roland - literally nothing. Was his casting simply based on skin tone? Krieg looks great. Jack Black doesn't bother me at all - a annoying, chattering robot that won't shut up - yeah! Jack can do that! But the main cast - Lilith, Roland and Tina - totally wrong.
The Casting totally baffles me. Anyone who has played this game will have a hard time relating to the characters because of it I think.
Would have a better move to cast some unknowns rather than some boomers that are far too related to other well known franchises.
With this casting, what they should have done is say that this film is set 25 ish years after Borderlands 1.. obviously tiny Tina would have to be changed but it almost works

I’m a huge borderlands fan mainly for the lore part, and how fun it is, and for me the movie looks alright but I have 3 problems with it, 1. Some of the customs designs look like cosplay, 2. The comedy and jokes in the trailer are horrible and not even funny, 3 the casting is horrendous and terrible, who tf did the casting, seriously I could do a better job at casting, here’s who I would cast

First off, THANK YOU for all the positives. I am so tired of seeing reviewes going on and on with "this is gonna suck!" I was irritated when i first heard about casting(i was rooting for someone like Allison Scagliotti for Lilith) but, i got over it. I have no power on who they cast.I began looking forward to how the actors will do. As time progressed, I learned that the story will be a new one taking place in a alternate Borderlands universe. Which to me means, New story, same elements from the franchise. I've seen this happen many times with books to films. I'm ok with that. Now I just need to see the trailer to find out what they came up with. By accident on the day of the release,I saw a very crappy trailer, narrated by a very boring guy. "Oh noes" was my thought. I went back to the BL site and found the correct link. I loved it! THIS felt like a Borderlands film! Campy, Funny, half naked guys with masks , great music and "EXPlooooosions"! Observing the cast, they are not my first choice but, i think they will do well. All in all, I think this is going to be a fun ride. Maybe if it does well, some version of Handsome JAck may show up in the next.

Im honestly gonna laugh if Sonic Movie 3 slaps the Borderlands movie in the box office. Like there's no way i can see the Borderlands movie be anywhere near as good as the 2 Sonic Movies or even the Mario Movie for that matter, heck its not even gonna be nowhere near The Last of Us show.
My biggest issue, other than them getting the characters completely wrong. It that the actors are so much older and worries me that they jokes and style will also be older. What they should have done is target the youth cuz there the ppl playing the most games! Like who is there audience? Arnt they trying to advertise the games to the new generation? Just seems like really bad marketing and a major opportunity missed.
It's wild that everyone on the internet seems to be worried but everyone I know personally around me are actually extremely excited to go see the movie....
I Personally think that this Borderlands movie is in the same Situation like the Ratchet and Clank Movie, it is good but it doesn't feel the same when you are a fan of the original
i don't mind the generally older casting. Especially with Krieg and Tina already being with the group, i like to imagine this is the story that unfolds if BL1 started a decade-ish late. And the feel of the world of Pandora is far more important to me as Tales of the Borderlands has taught me.
(i do find it funny how Hart and Blanchett seems to have swapped intended roles if based on personality)
The casting reflects 1 thing. And that is Randy Pitchfords Ego. It doesnt have to feel right, it just has to make him feel good. If youve seen his vlog behind the scenes sucking up to and annoying everyone on set, thats it.

I'm fine with Cate Blanchett playing Lilith Shes older than the game portrays, however she is a great actress, I'd rather have a great actress play her than one of the younger no talent hacks running around Hollywood now. But as much as I love Jamie Lee Curtis, she is miscast as Tannis. Winona Ryder for example would have been a better choice. Jack Black's voice didn't bother me too much but I would have rather had the original VA. Jack could have played Marcus maybe? But regardless I'm hyped and will watch it when it comes out.

I mean I saw the trailer and I thought it looked good but yeah some aspects I'm not on board with. For one isn't Tiny Tina about 8 or 12 years old when Roland dies? Anyone who has played Borderlands 2 knows full well what happened there. In this Tiny Tina seems like she's 17 or 18 give or take, Roland should NOT be in the picture unless they retconned it. Also if Borderlands 3 is considered canon shouldn't Lilith be gone and Tanis is now a Siren? There's a lot of gaps in here. To be fair MAYBE its an alternate universe where Handsome Jack never went insane, Elpis never existed etc., the sky's the limit.
After listening though (I really should hear the whole video, sorry force of habit) yes it does seem like Pitchford and the crew went with an alternate time line which in the Borderlands universe is not to far fetched and I like it. Can't wait to see this go live.😁

I have played Borderlands 1 and 2 and admit though that I paid no attention to the story or anything of either. I turned the voices off, set dialogue to skip. just accepted the missions an shot stuff an advanced/moved on until it ended.
And even with that as my experience with the game franchise I saw this trailer and was just like "Oh wow. No. Pass"
Handsome Jack better not be in this, I swear they better not ruin one of my favorite villains.

They couldn't get the original voice after for clap trap because of a certain something something randy pitchford did to the voice acter who now flat out refuses to voice the character, I was okay with the voice of JackTrap however.
About these stories they release, they did the exact same thing before they annonce Borderlands 3, so I'm pretty sure the theory of annoncing Borderlands 4 at Pax East is probably right.
I feel that this will be something to go into not expecting Oscars to be attached to it in years to come, but it will still be enjoyable as fan of the game.
Must say I don't quite agree with you on the casting, but I do feel maybe Kevin will be the clinching character. Jack will easily slip into the chaos that is the trap, Cate is too professional and it wasn't that long ago she was in the Marvelverse. Jamie should carry off Tanis np, but I often find the problem I have is that a big name is very hard to dissociate from their earlier movies. Wish Ashley Burch could have played Tina, but understand.

I know taking a material and adapting it for movies or TV, look at Twisted Metal and how that did it, since it took parts of the game, and made it's own thing (Season 2 looks to be more aligned with the games).
This is NOT that, this is taking miniatures, the planet, nothing else and smashing it together and making shit up. When your adaptation takes SO many liberties that it becomes it's own thing, you aren't adapting Borderlands, you are ripping it off, and committing copyright infringement to yourself.

The Magic that made BL1&2 Giant hits and “ GotY” was in the talent of the original Devs that created Borderlands and none of that original talent is at GearBox . I think moxxie is alright... She is designed as a late ish middleaged woman.. casting is prolly a lil too old but it's not too bad.
Lilith however makes me sense. Her design is clearly that if a young woman, they could prolly have gone all the way up to a youthful looking 40 year old, but Cate Blanchett does simply not look like the character

You should consider doing breakdown videos and opinions of the Halo live action series and other video game based live action stuff since you're so passionate about them

I feel like if they got Terry Crews to play Roland instead of Kevin Hart nobody would be complaining about the Lilith and Tanis castings
Movies that had reshoots from outside the last like 15 years were definitely red flags. Nowadays, it's rare that blockbuster film doesn't have reshoots.
Its not that i want it to be exactly like the game, its that they dont even have a target audience and if they do its not the youth which it should have been!
Tiny Tina is a tween not 16 that should be gaige. Besides to me it seems like this take before borderlands 2 because Roland saved tiny Tina from general rancid or something.
Lone your not alone (pardon the pun) when I seen they had 2 comic reliefs in the movie I was like WTF? 101 of making movies is you do not have 2 comic reliefs in a film, plus why in gods earth did they put Kevin Hart in this movie as Roland is beyond me. Roland is a military leader Kevin Hart is a comedy actor both do not mix AT ALL WHAT SO EVER, lets not mention no Brick and no Mordecai. Tiny Tina would have been under 8 years old the time of the first game making it impossible for her to be at the age she is in the movie, when will Hollywood stop fucking up movies made from reputable game franchises by not following the source material they've been given or get actors and writers whom actually played these games to make these movies franchises FFS!
I tried the game once and it just didn't hit me for some reason...
BUT, I watched the trailer and am REALLY looking forward to seeing the film.

Okay, the first game? It is honestly kind of rough. Me and my mates were trying to run through the games and Borderlands 1 is definitely a very janky and buggy mess that isn't that compatible with newer systems anymore.
BL 2 and up should be a lot better experiences and you honestly don't need to play the first game to enjoy the sequels or the story.
@@Elmithian It might be like that on consoles but on PC B1 plays fine and is still really fun. Graphically it looks dated, but cel shading helps with that.
@@georgen5882 I played B1 on a pretty hefty PC rig. It ran like I was using a windows vista mini-laptop.
We are talking framerate in the medium-to-low 10s and even single digits almost half the time.
It is a known issue that has never been fixed and to fix it personally takes a lot of busywork which I did not have time for when me and my mates were playing the games.
And the controls on pc feel stiff. I dunno about you but it has been less than 2 months since we played the game. Go and try it now and tell me the gameplay isn't a tad stiff in comparison to the future games.
I mean, there are some quality of life things that the sequels brought that makes it hard to return to the 1st game.
On the plus side, at least it’s not a Uwe Boll film. I don’t know a lot about borderlands I’ve never actually played it the art style just doesn’t ring true with me. Probably a shortcoming that I need to get over. Anyway, that said 100% on the casting. You just can’t pick big names and throw them in. That’s done so people that don’t know anything about borderlands will say hey there’s a new movie with Jamie Lee Curtis Or Kevin Hart. Let’s go check it out. I liken it to Dune. When Jason Momoa showed up, I was like that’s the most horrifying choice they could possibly make until I saw Dave Bautista, the world’s biggest teddy bear. And when he showed up, I got through the movie, but for me, there was no saving it. At that point. There was zero saving grace at that point for Dune. On a sidenote, because of game pass, I am 100 hours into assassin’s creed Valhalla, and what the hell there’s an assassin’s creed movie? I gotta go find it. Thank you. Excellent video as always.
