- It's probably time to admit that the Borderlands movie isn't really for diehard fans of Borderlands. Can't believe I'm saying this, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a chance... as long as we look at it a little differently.

One of my close friends hates the games but liked the movie trailer. That’s when I knew the movie wasn’t really for me the fan, but for the masses. I hope to not be too disappointed as a huge fan. I just hope if there is a sequel, they don’t screw up handsome Jack
Only way there will ever be a sequel is if this movie does well. So with that in mind, they can take my money 🤣

The way I’m going in to it is I wanna like it. Giving it the highest hopes but also knowing they may have blown their budget on cast.

Thanks, you've said exactly what I've been thinking and I've played and enjoyed all the Borderlands games. I'm looking forward with a little trepidation to the movie (and Borderlands 4!).
Hope borderlands 4 will save the series and hopefully they dont overdo the series we don't want it to be assassins creed where it over stays it welcome 4 games is enough in my opinion with the odd spin off
I think Pitchford is trying to make the BL movie more child friendly for a bigger audience and It's probably going to suffer because of it
The problem is that this movie is still tied to Randy Pitchford and has been in development hell for years. This movie was announced back in 2015, got started in 2019 and went through reshoots up till 2022. Jack Black voicing Clap-Trap is directly a result of Randy punching Clap-Trap's original VA. And both directors for this have bad other movies come out in the same time.
Despite trying to market for Guardians if the Galaxy, it misses what made Guardians: James Gunn. And despite mentioning Suicide Squad, Roland's exact character was there in Idris Elba's Bloodsport.
Many of the casting picks can be traced to Randy himself as be alludes to or has admitted. And others aren't hard to guess due to their nature of nerd fandom.
And this is even before mentioning this is probably to market Borderlands 4. I myself am a Borderlands fan, but removing that: this looks like a cheap movie with terrible costumes, nerf guns, and a mess. Hell, why is a robot shitting bullet casings when he should be shitting lead? Or why is a character called Tiny Tina, somehow as tall if not taller than your soldier? You can go on.
Oh and Randy wants a cinematic universe out of this. Which should be telling.😊
I'm mostly looking for two things from this movie: does it feel like Borderlands, and is it going to be fun.
thank you for making this - you're the first person that rationalized why the movie was made for a different audience and that it made sense to do so and weirdly, that makes me more hopeful to see if they can do well at this while I let go of wanting it to be the borderlands I know and love. That said, I'm still bummed as a siren main and lore nerd for there to be no siren tattoos haha

Isn’t this kind of what is wrong with certain kinds of media now? Why do fans have to change their expectations of something to enjoy it? Especially when it seems to be so far from the the source material. I think two things are at work here: people who like borderlands won’t like the movie, at least the majority. And people who don’t know about it may enjoy it but many will be confused. Like others have said, I don’t know who this movie was made for.
Absolutely spot on. Whilst a lot of gamers are probably film fans, a lot of film fans are simply NOT gamers. Being a slightly different medium and business, the film has to appeal to a wider audience and compete with a lot of limitations.
This what I’ve been saying all along. This movie is NOT for BL fans. This movie is for a general audience! So like everyone other hater when I first heard about the cast I was put off...initially. Then I looked at the cast and realized, DAMN...this is an impressive line up of sci fi/ fantasy actors. I am super familiar with all of the cast except for Adrianna Greenblatt, who’s star seems to be on the rise, and the villain (the CEO or the Atlas Corp) who I don’t know at all, so that in itself is pretty cool! Yes I will miss Brick and Morty but maybe, if this movie does well, they will be in the sequel. Fingers crossed this movie does well because there’s obviously lots of stories to tell from this universe.

Don't agree with everything you said. But I see what you mean. And I'm really glad someone is talking about the writing/crude comdey style. It's a huge part of what makes Borderlands so good. I can't help but feel like there is an agenda with our favorite franchises, though. It just turns my stomach.
The only dumb thing here is that they are calling this thing Borderlands. The movie looks terrible, yes. But if you're not going to MAKE it Borderlands, why CALL it Borderlands?
And then we have a movie like Mario to show you how it can be done.

I appreciated your breakdown, it's cogent and I think you're spot in in terms of the Borderlands movie - not being a Borderlands movie 😉
However, I disagree with the rationale around the casting of Kevin Hart as Roland. If this is to be a mad-cap action comedy caper - then you need a stoic straight-man character, I.e. You need Roland's persona from the game. In order for the zany jokes to land, you need that contrast to play off, and act as set up for the punchlines from the other outlandish and unpredictable characters.
What worries me is that the script writers (going by this trailer), have potentially handed that role and function to Lilith. Therefore, Roland becomes entirely pointless as he doesn't add value or balance to the group dynamic.
I love Borderlands and I’m also torn when it comes to this cast and movie in general. I’m just hoping it can’t be worse than Madame Web lol. Also if you haven’t watched Twisted Metal you definitely need to because it was amazing!
I feel like because they had to refillm a big section of the movie due to it being laughed off screen its going to be bad, I feel like they wanted a borderlands themed apocalyptic movie but didn't want it to he borderlands, it's going to fail hard with fans and its going to go great with anyone whose never heard of the games.
The casting makes sense honestly. Play bl2 and the casting will make sense.

I am so turned off by what I’ve seen so far. The long journey from filming to debut(and a reshoot) suggests that the original was a dumpster fire. I would be surprised if it turned out as something that fans could stomach. It’s entirely possible that it is successful and mainstream fans love it. I will wait until reviews come out before I decide to invest my time in it. You are correct in that it won’t be Borderlands.

Great review! Gained a sub! I feel the same way. Besides, there is no way in hell, in the current state of things, they could do an ACTUAL Borderlands movie. The level of violence needed would border (NPI lol) on the movie getting an X rating.
Finally, someone who's not grabbing for views by crapping on the movie and is willing to tell it like it is. Hollywood is in the business of making money and while there a a huge amount of people who have purchased the games, not all of them are fans, so why make a movie for fans with the likelihood of losing money? Answer, they won't. It's always been for the masses. I"m just happy to finally have my favourite game coming to the big screen. I don't expect it to be canon BL, but I do expect it to be a fun ride!
To me personally I think it would be better if it a TV series to help tell the story/lore and slightly different cast
I feel like if they made a movie for the fans then everyone else will follow. Imagine the word of mouth if fans were praising the film. Instead you have majority of the fan base angry which will effect the movie if all everyone hears is the bad points like the casting for instance. Well anyway I played the Borderlands games and I'm a fan but this movie I'll watch in 6 months when it's free on streaming sites. I like the actors but not in these roles.
I get your point and do see it. But my problem is that all money went to the cast and nothing else. The movie being it's own thing is fine to me but it feels like they are trying to please everyone but in the wrong way. I feel like having 150mil should get us better set design then what the trailer had. But of course it's my opinion and don't care if people go see it. As long as borderlands 4 is better then the last 2-3 games we have gotten so far

this man really be like this movie gonna be good when eli roth hasnt made anything good and as a borderlands fan and sitting on the fence for this movie this honestly just looks like a honey we have guardians of the galaxy at home also i have nothing against kevin heart i like him alot but fed up with people thinking kevin acting as himself in every movie it gets to the point of rolling my eyes look i get it hes a comedian but there is only so much of the same you can take befor you get bored and tired of it
I just wish everything wasn't about money sometimes, take a potential loss to do something for your actual fans just to be cool or nice.

There isn’t any chance of them successfully adapting the characters, humor, or the story. Based off everything we’ve seen so far this movie is going to flop and damage the franchise further.

They had a budget and blew it on old ass females playing a young females role for some reason. Could've got some younger and cheaper talent for that and then had the budget for better cast.

True. I can't really think of that many bad adaptations that appeal to both but I can think of a massive amount of bad ones that don't care about the fans and/or the accuracy of the original material.

Dude I get you're advocating for the film's appeal to casual movie goers, and as an entrepreneur with a growing business sense I get why.
And honestly given that this film seems devoid of preachy leftist talking points it might do well with casual movie goers. This is a wait and see sort of deal.
Going to be trash. No brick or Mordecai should have been the original 4. Going to be a flop buster for sure.
Please let's just give high hopes to this movie. Besides, seing Boderlands having its own movie is a great opportunity for the franchise to have significant impact on their future projects.
Which audience wants to see a) de-beautified female action heroes their grandmother's age, b) a mad max style dystopia, and c) poop and piss jokes synthesised together? Why pay all that money for the Borderlands IP and its built in audience if they are just going to make something that alienates the built in audience? Lord of the Rings was a faithful fan adaption of an IP only enjoyed by super-nerds that even Trekkies looked down on, and the results were they got six blockbusters out of it, swept the Oscars and sold a ridiculous ton of merch for the next twenty years. Some fans were paying hundreds of dollars for limited edition DVD sets, and then did the same on Blueray. By making something that doesn't appeal to general audiences AND alienates existing fans, they get yet another dud $200 million movie with a $300 million marketing budget that brings in $100m at the box office, while taking the shine away from the original franchise so less people will play the games and buy the merch than otherwise would have.
If they're making a movie for the masses, start with original IP or a classic with a household name, and give the masses what they want, like Spielburg, Cameron and Lucas did in the 70s-90s when they invented blockbusters. Dungeons and Dragons was a much bigger household name, had a better trailer, and yet still only achieved slow and moderate success as the general audiences had already written it off; it was saved by word of mouth, but it was hardly a blockbuster and will be forgotten pretty soon. Which demographic wants this mess exactly? Not the fans, not the geeks and gamers, not the sci-fi/fantasy nerds, not the fans of childish toilet humour, not parents looking for family entertainment, not the fans of fifty-something fans of Jamie Lee Curtis and Cate Blanchett's Oscar-worthy drama, not woke people excited about the predominantly female cast, race and gender swapping and lack of white male faces. May be they will attract a few people who liked the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, but that audience is clearly disappearing too seeing as how Guardians 3 barely made back the marketing and production budget, and this really doesn't look like it has the same standard of writing, special effects and casting.

Played all the games including Tales. This movie is going to be a giant pile of shit. Old actresses playing younger characters. Kevin Hart's tiny ass playing Roland. And why is Kreig in here? A DLC character getting screen time before Brick and Mordecai is a literal crime.

Hey, if i want to get pissy and bitchy over a video game movie that hasb awful casting in it then i will lol. Aside I'm sure some people will have fun with it, it just isn't for me. By trying to appeal to a wider audience with the cast it 100% repels me. I'll stick to the stuff i love of the games and go from there, just a bit sad for me that i won't enjoy the big movie.
