I have a mishimoto racing thermostat in my STI and days where it’s cold, I get a CEL/MIL for “coolant temp below thermostat regulating temp”. Pretty much coolant is colder than the OEM thermostat would open. I just made a grill shutter guard like you see on semis/buses. Block some airflow to the radiator and runs how it would normally. 10/10. Only during the winter months though, obviously.
Two summers ago my e46 BMW started knocking really bad and immediately going into lip mode, so I parked it for a year thinking I needed to do an engine swap. This past summer I started tearing it down to swap in a 3 liter engine, and I found a few bad sparkplugs. The ceramic had gotten loose from the metal threaded part and one had a good 1/8th inch of play. So the knock was just the spark plug popping in and out each time the the piston moved, sounding exactly like rod knock.
Honestly, that almost sounds like what my engine sounded like in my 1.6 a couple months after I rebuilt it. Well, after I solved my horrendous lifter tick by cleaning the valves. My sound ended up being the bolts on the main accessory pulley coming loose. I kept driving it a bit and it had actually broke off while I was on the road, I assume after one or more of the bolts backed out. Definitely do a bolt check on everything that moves before you do anything drastic. (Assuming you aren’t wayyy ahead of the video releases)
Hard to tell from the video, but I had a similar sound. Mine turned out to be the adjustable cam gear. 2 of the nuts that held on the adjustment piece had backed out and the gear was actually moving making a VERY similar sound. Double check that before you pull the motor apart!
@@_Gingium_ o yeah its basically a inch off the firewall but I don't think I'll replace the thermostat that often, probably pull the engine out before that 😂
Probably should have checked ignition timing after putting it all back together. Good chance it was probably over advanced especially since you deleted the stock ignitor
yeah, you gotta block part/all of the radiator in colder months. I drove my miata yearround (naturally aspirated, but with reroute and supermiata crossflow) and beginning in fall, I had to cover part of the radiator with cardboard. In winter I slid the cardboard all the way down, and with the rad covered completely it would stay at proper operating temps. I also drove it pretty hard, so I'd imagine if you just puttsed around, even with the rad blocked from most airflow, you'd need a different thermostat.
I feel like if that were rod knock, it would have eventually either seized up or something catastrophic would have happened with the amount of time the engine was on/driven with the noise.
A good tip for rod knock. THE MOMENT you hear it start, pull off the road immediately and turn the engine off ASAP. If you are quick enough, you can save your crankshaft. What Gingium did by revving it most certainly ruined the crankshaft (if it is rod knock). If it's the classic miata lifter cup noise, well we all know how to deal with that...
@@admiralshikimori6960yes, but its engine is high compression and must have different cams so it may be possible for it to touch the pistons and the engine has two camshafts with adjustable pulleys .

You should drill a 2mm hole in the thermostat "plate". It allows for some water to pass, and actually reach the thermostat, instead of still standing, when the thermostat is not heated by the engine block, when you remote mount it like this.
So the coil on plug kit WILL work with megasquirt, but you have to change other settings? Am I hearing that correctly? Cause I'd love to have that kit, and I have a megasquirt as well.
Hello everyone I was wondering on if my pressure plate is bad. When the car on it won’t go into gear but when the car off it will. I have replaced the master and sleeve. I have also bleed it till there no air in the system. I get an 1inch from sleeve cylinder
Didn’t sound like rod knock. That’s more of a solid knock that sounded more like a hollow tapping. More than likely head noise or possibly timing chain rattle.
I have the exact same reroute and i have been battling issues with mine as well, i have changed thermostat twice and it still overheats in the summer but gets too cold going down steep declines for extended period of time. Going up inclines the temps climb to 220 quickly, but drop to 140 going back down the incline. Yet it overheats on the highway after about 10 minutes, It currently has a 185 FM thermostat and nothing changed.
That reroute is garbage, get the spacer that lets you use the kia thermostat neck with an escalade radiator hose. That way the thermostat is IN the head where it belongs, mine never overheated or had issues self bleeding.
Thermostat won't ever cause an overheating issue unless you chose an ungodly high temp rated one or it's broken. Thermostat only dictates the MINIMUM temperature (unless you are over-cooling because of low temp outside for example). 140 is too low no matter what, stick to the 185f temp as these cars run best at 190-200f. Your issue is probably ducting or less likely insufficient radiator size.
@@cn1364-w6c I don't have any ducting between my intercooler and radiator, I have one stock exhaust fan on the hot side and an aluminum koyorad radiator. I am adding ducting and a second cooling fan to see if that makes a correction. thanks for info

Rod knock will usually have more variability with revving/deccel, even going quiet at times. This sounded pretty consistent.

Hummelink has the cleanest stuff, just like their shop, I'm running their VAG COP kit.
If you’re running at 200F you might want to try a higher pressure relief valve. Factory is 1bar and you can install a 2bar pressure relief.

The super miata reroute is mounted on the back of the head allowing the thermostat to heat up faster and more consistent with engine temp.
Definitely smart for regulating coolant temp, but probably an extra pain to work on.
