- Today we install a Hummelink Modifications Toyota coil on plug kit on the high compression turbo 1.6L Miata! The install went perfectly but then, the car developed a NASTY engine noise. Does it have rod knock?

Thanks for using our coil on plug kit! Let's hope it's not rodknock...
Thanks for sending it out! It's an awesome product!
If it's a rod knock maybe LS SWAP 😊
That’s a badass setup. Looks amazing!
@@user-st6mc4mm2uto big and heavy for that car
Man delivered gewoon aan gingium
On camera at least, it doesn't *sound* like rod knock. It sounds more tinny like it would be something in the timing. Here's to hoping its not rod knock!
Not to spoil anything but you're right
@@_Gingium_i had a feeling you didnt set the time right on the engine when u did the belt or the sprocket on the harmonic balancer had to do with something?
I thought top end too
That's exactly what I thought, too tinny for rod knock.
@@_Gingium_ It actually sounds like one of your coils isnt working ;) ! I have a 1.6 turbo as well and i had the same issue after a change on the spark wires! I went out for some pulls and suddenly i heard the same sound came out only to realize one of the cables got loose on the coils
Possibly the best youtube channel currently out there for automotive modifications. Thanks for all the content and keeping it fun always. Good luck for 2024 brother.
Car Passion exists too.
I love the transparency of shOwing even the ups and downs of owning such automobiles
I always try to be transparent!
Rod knock will usually have more variability with revving/deccel, even going quiet at times. This sounded pretty consistent.
Honestly, that almost sounds like what my engine sounded like in my 1.6 a couple months after I rebuilt it. Well, after I solved my horrendous lifter tick by cleaning the valves.
My sound ended up being the bolts on the main accessory pulley coming loose. I kept driving it a bit and it had actually broke off while I was on the road, I assume after one or more of the bolts backed out.
Definitely do a bolt check on everything that moves before you do anything drastic. (Assuming you aren’t wayyy ahead of the video releases)
Two summers ago my e46 BMW started knocking really bad and immediately going into lip mode, so I parked it for a year thinking I needed to do an engine swap. This past summer I started tearing it down to swap in a 3 liter engine, and I found a few bad sparkplugs. The ceramic had gotten loose from the metal threaded part and one had a good 1/8th inch of play. So the knock was just the spark plug popping in and out each time the the piston moved, sounding exactly like rod knock.
I have a mishimoto racing thermostat in my STI and days where it’s cold, I get a CEL/MIL for “coolant temp below thermostat regulating temp”. Pretty much coolant is colder than the OEM thermostat would open. I just made a grill shutter guard like you see on semis/buses. Block some airflow to the radiator and runs how it would normally. 10/10. Only during the winter months though, obviously.
Honestly that was a really smart idea I never even considered 😭
Daaaaang that rod knock would be a vibe killer for me, props to you for keeping your cool!!
I bet Molly is going to be worth a ton due to being a really well looked after miata
Always love a good Molly video. Merry Christmas Gingium from
NZ!
Molly will forever be my fav build!
13:14 That spin in third 😍😍
Probably should have checked ignition timing after putting it all back together. Good chance it was probably over advanced especially since you deleted the stock ignitor
If you’re running at 200F you might want to try a higher pressure relief valve. Factory is 1bar and you can install a 2bar pressure relief.
Hummelink has the cleanest stuff, just like their shop, I'm running their VAG COP kit.
Sounds like an exhaust valve stuck open. Have you tried a compression test by chance? Is it an interference engine? Good luck!!
Haven't done a compression test, but yes, this is technically an interference engine with the high compression pistons...
Thank god you put the dwell time info in the video, installing em on my nb1 next weekend but threw away the manual accidentally
Molly is such a beautiful car. Cleanest of your fleet for real.
Sounds like timing…🤞 Merry Christmas my guy!
That's one badass Miata, but I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your friends and family
Thank you ❤ for curing me of all the stresses.
Clean ass miata brother 🔥 Happy holidays!
The super miata reroute is mounted on the back of the head allowing the thermostat to heat up faster and more consistent with engine temp.
Definitely smart for regulating coolant temp, but probably an extra pain to work on.
@@_Gingium_ o yeah its basically a inch off the firewall but I don't think I'll replace the thermostat that often, probably pull the engine out before that 😂
Hard to tell from the video, but I had a similar sound. Mine turned out to be the adjustable cam gear. 2 of the nuts that held on the adjustment piece had backed out and the gear was actually moving making a VERY similar sound. Double check that before you pull the motor apart!
😉
Man these videos give me such NA Miata envy, you are very lucky
Nice work ❤️ 👍🏼
Merry Christmas from the zuki family
Top end mate ,comp test ,check all your buckets and shims
Merry Christmas!
I feel like if that were rod knock, it would have eventually either seized up or something catastrophic would have happened with the amount of time the engine was on/driven with the noise.
Any plans to build a diffuser for Molly? That rear bumper surely creates a lot of drag
yeah, you gotta block part/all of the radiator in colder months. I drove my miata yearround (naturally aspirated, but with reroute and supermiata crossflow) and beginning in fall, I had to cover part of the radiator with cardboard. In winter I slid the cardboard all the way down, and with the rad covered completely it would stay at proper operating temps. I also drove it pretty hard, so I'd imagine if you just puttsed around, even with the rad blocked from most airflow, you'd need a different thermostat.
Next mod should be a really nice stereo system with big subwoofer, then you won't hear the rodknock anymore.
You just finished taking apart the crank pully and timing belt. Why would it rod knock now... probably something to do with timing
Always thought the big turbo 1.6 was a time bomb haha. would be sweet to see you throw a rotary in there
Rodknock modshop exists for this very reason, Miatas~Rodneys
Youre wild for beating on that Miata after changing the coils without having someone look at the tune
For me it sounds like unhappy valves, cant wait to see the fix
Timing chain tensioner went out maybe? Just happened to my buddy’s s2k and it sounds similar
662 k subs good on you$$$$
Ah the highs and lows of building a car in ONE ride.
remember the ls6 in the Volvo 240. probably something like that with something rubbing somewhere. be careful you never know
Yo gingium just keep in mind that standard Mazda Miata thermostats don’t fit in that reroute thermostat housing, you need one from a 95 Suzuki samurai
If you have hyndaulic timingbelt tensioner check if its ok it sound same as rod knock
For thermostats it's 20° or25° of play for 180 therostat starts to open at 180 and fully open at 200
make a tine bleed port at the thermostat (one that goes back to the other side just to get the temp at the thermostat
hey sweet clear side markers, where'd you get them from?
I dunno some hobo off the internet
@@_Gingium_ smart hobo
I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any means but it kinda sounds like a pulley went bad or got loose and is grinding somewhere.
you might be right 👀
I could get behind this, too. Almost like the sound of a broken harmonic balancer...
Is that a mighty car mods chopped banner?!
Gingium
Something timing related, sounds high pitch, like tensioner noise or pulley noise
So the coil on plug kit WILL work with megasquirt, but you have to change other settings? Am I hearing that correctly? Cause I'd love to have that kit, and I have a megasquirt as well.
A good tip for rod knock. THE MOMENT you hear it start, pull off the road immediately and turn the engine off ASAP. If you are quick enough, you can save your crankshaft. What Gingium did by revving it most certainly ruined the crankshaft (if it is rod knock). If it's the classic miata lifter cup noise, well we all know how to deal with that...
Doesn't sound like rod knock more like a valve train issue
Well does not sound like rod knock and he did remove the timing belt and other stuff that may be the problem, or some valves may have 😘😘😘 the pistons.
@JorgeSilva-ry8fd It's a non-interference engine so the valves will never touch the piston if they hang open. Also I said, "if it is rod knock."
@@admiralshikimori6960yes, but its engine is high compression and must have different cams so it may be possible for it to touch the pistons and the engine has two camshafts with adjustable pulleys .
Check your harmonic balancer bolts or something behind the belt cover plate dosent sound rod knock
Molly is the equivalent of adam lz’s cream s13, it deserves a crazy engine swap
Hello everyone I was wondering on if my pressure plate is bad. When the car on it won’t go into gear but when the car off it will. I have replaced the master and sleeve. I have also bleed it till there no air in the system. I get an 1inch from sleeve cylinder
Man.. That car eats better than some people do.. I have never seen a car that gets driven as much as Mollie does with such a spotless engine bay... Rip Mollies engine..
Sad to see Molly get injured. 😢
What drivetrain set up do you have
Put a ls in it like Taylor Ray
Thats topend, stuck lifter?
what is that foaming spray used at 2:33?
Might wanna check your flywheel just does resonate like rod knock
In order too move I had to___ GUHH 😂 🤣😂😂
Loose cam gear bolts?
Is there anything Mishimoto doesn’t make? Pretty soon you’re going to be wearing Mishimoto socks while eating a delicious Mishimoto tv dinner.
Sounds like the timing cover rubbing the crank or you blew your water pump
The coil pack setup Greg Peters used on Red Car looks awesome, but super expensive. Way out of my budget.
Nice looking kit, but my LS coils aren't ugly! Lol
I have the exact same reroute and i have been battling issues with mine as well, i have changed thermostat twice and it still overheats in the summer but gets too cold going down steep declines for extended period of time. Going up inclines the temps climb to 220 quickly, but drop to 140 going back down the incline. Yet it overheats on the highway after about 10 minutes, It currently has a 185 FM thermostat and nothing changed.
That reroute is garbage, get the spacer that lets you use the kia thermostat neck with an escalade radiator hose. That way the thermostat is IN the head where it belongs, mine never overheated or had issues self bleeding.
Thermostat won't ever cause an overheating issue unless you chose an ungodly high temp rated one or it's broken. Thermostat only dictates the MINIMUM temperature (unless you are over-cooling because of low temp outside for example).
140 is too low no matter what, stick to the 185f temp as these cars run best at 190-200f.
Your issue is probably ducting or less likely insufficient radiator size.
@@calvinnguyen1364 I don't have any ducting between my intercooler and radiator, I have one stock exhaust fan on the hot side and an aluminum koyorad radiator. I am adding ducting and a second cooling fan to see if that makes a correction. thanks for info
You definitely should make a V8 Miata
Greg was right
1.8 swap time
Damn man
Aren't you supposed run low compression when running boost?
The guy with the vw is back and im askin kaleb again for a vr6 swap like dude what are the ods of seeing one.... Close to none... Just the engine with audi rwd gearbox from a4 or whatever and you're good to hit 500 hp with stock internals.... Think about it dude the channel will hit harder than molly on the highway
Anyone know what that foaming degreaser he used was?? It was at 2:30ish
Also was wondering what that was...
Now you can put a real engine in Molly. Actually really hope it's nothing, this is the car that brought me to your channel.v
You should drill a 2mm hole in the thermostat "plate". It allows for some water to pass, and actually reach the thermostat, instead of still standing, when the thermostat is not heated by the engine block, when you remote mount it like this.
Mazdaspeed 3/6 swap incoming??
That sounds really hollow for rod knock but hey anything is possible
I feel like Molly needs a make over and some love! A little too blue IMO
sounds like its on the Head
Welcome to the club… I’ve sent multiple BPs to the graveyard. Oops
Pretty sure oem thermostat is 180*.
Check your belt tensioner bearing... ifs fucked itll sound the same with rotational noise
Oh, 😢, I’ll go to church for ya, pray for stuck value
Sounds a little to high pitch and tinny for rod knock, hoping for the best Molly is my favourite of your builds
…time for a drink
"i think i rod knocked my motor" Proceeds to rev the shit out of it and drive it home xD
Guess its time to swap to a bigger engine 😁😁😁
Sounds like a piston tapping into a stuck valve to me
BTW LS coils do not have the strongest spark. There are tons of coils that are better. The only reason LS is popular is because you can get them cheap from a junkyard.
Didn’t sound like rod knock. That’s more of a solid knock that sounded more like a hollow tapping. More than likely head noise or possibly timing chain rattle.
A COLON what 😳
Oil cooler is needed
Spun a rod bearing, piston hitting the head
Honestly sounds like the turbo may have blown up?
Honestly I've never heard of a turbo making noise like this. It's also building boost just fine!
@_Gingium_ I agree. The only reason I thought that was when you were driving it almost sounded like an exhaust tick, so I figured maybe the turbine wheel might've failed.
Sounds like cam bearing to me tbh
Good luck. On video it sounds too high pitched.
Good luck. Merry Christmas!
