Testing the Maxxis 4 Snow winter tires with my Raptor 700

- We finally got some snow and I was able to test these new 4 Snow tires I've had for the last month!
This video shows my first impressions of these purpose made snow tires that have been around for several years. There was a lot of positive reviews on these tires and I was eager to finally test them. They surpassed my expectations in the deep, heavier snow and I was very impressed with the added traction when climbing uphill. They're 22 inches tall but seem even taller with their ballooned shape. The extra 3 inches of rear ground clearance makes a world of difference!

That tread pattern has been around for years! The were called pro wedges and originally used for sand way back it the 70s.
I still own two sets of pro wedges!
Best tire ever
I had a set on the banshee pro wedges. Best tire ever
My favorite quad on UA-cam!
cool bro, i used to use maxxis for snow in the desert it works amazing
That's impressive! looks like fun. Nice job on showing a real test.
those are defiantly working well and once you get moving they balloon up even more and really hookup. Its been cold as hell hear as well and not much snow still really hoping for one or two good snow rides b4 spring hits we did get out this past weekend and had some fun
These are definitely great. I live in Quebec, Canada and we always have a shit ton of snow in the winter. The most common winter tires combination for a sport quad is Maxxis 4 snow in the rear and Kenda Front Max in the front.
Do the Kenda tires seem durable? We have been looking into getting a pair of them. Thanks!
Those tires seem alot better I thought my 2019 would be here by now but its March I'm dreaming just watching this keep it up these are good videos I love them
I have same exact quad and I was looking at those tires and now I see proof that they are good and definately gonna grab a pair
Awesome! glad I could help you out and congrats on the new raptor! They're super cheap on 2wheel.com. less than $65 a tire. These are the 22x10x9's that fit the factory wheels
Please post more soon gust recently bought a raptor 660R and I'm really enjoying your videos man keep the good work 👍🤟
Love these tires. Wish I could get them for my 650 Suzuki king quad.
Really appreciate your content. I can tell that you are a very solid rider too. If you find yourself in norther California or souther Oregon I'd show you some amazing riding. Great coastal dunes to endless super technical mountain trails.
Thanks again for the channel.
Have you ever ridden with TrailBlogger?? he's in that area! Heading to the west coast would be my current dream trip. It would be quite the haul from MN but totally worth it
I am familiar with trail blogger. He is just south of me. I bet I'll run into him some time.
that exhaust is brutal with headphones but good vid man keep it up
Most guys use them year round..They are awesome in mud and dry terrain..Creek beds and climbing.
I figured the compound was too soft for harder surfaces but several people have said they use them climbing in the dirt too! they're not very expensive so i'll find out how durable they are. Now and then I have to ride on gravel and pavement to get to places so we'll see how hard that is on them
Really liking the content. Your videos are fun to watch. Keep up the great work. Yes riding in winter not much you can do i'm waiting for spring myself and then we'll be adding more content to my channel as well
Thanks for the compliments! I cant wait for spring!
Kinda look like the old school Kenda Nomad from back in the 90's. Always ran good ol' Wooley Boogers on my Banshee back then. Those hooked up everywhere in anything!
Great video Pete!
We always used sand paddle tires for the snow in Ohio, my friends would take trips up to the dunes in Michigan. We got more use out of them than just sand.
Seriously?? Can I use sand tires for snow??
@@danyboy5134 sand paddle tires work well on loose surfaces, so that would be sand, snow, mud and dirt.
We put regular sand paddles on in the snow. Throws it quite a ways, and lifts the front pretty much on demand.
I'll be getting a set of paddles for a dune trip this summer. I'll try them this winter!
Glad you enjoy the new tyres!
Always wanted to see these tires in action. Nice work cool stuff.
Love the sound of this bike
u should get a ski conversion for the front w those rear tires u can really have some fun if u threw chains or studded the tire u would slay in even deeper stuff too! but love the video man look like good tires might have to consider something soon for my kfx450r... but thumbs up to ur video brothaman! Us Peter's gotta stick together haha.. do the tires swell like the site says they do for a larger footprint when u rev it up? or to help get unstuck?
AWESOMELY AWESOME!!!!! Thanks for sharing another outstanding show 👍🏼😉cheers and enjoy.
Thanks for doing this. I got a raptor 700r se last year and the thing will not move in the snow where I’m at. At all. I’m getting these for next year. I have a Kodiak 700 that is a beast in the snow. I will also get them for that. Well worth it just to ride the few times I go up to my place in the winter. Thanks a lot. Appreciate it.
Awesome! the Kodiak will definitely eat snow all day with the 4 wheel drive! These tires are crazy cheap too! I only paid $65 a tire on 2wheel.com
The main reason I envy quads over dirtbikes is the ability to swap different size tires
You don't need to swap tire size on bikes?
All your videos make me miss my yfz 450.
I had a new 2004 660R many years ago. Thing was a total blast. I know the 700R is miles better but I've never ridden one. Would love to have one again, but alas city life and no private garage or means to haul it. I ride another Yamaha product, the MT-09.
Ya Idk about that buddy, I've beat Loads of 700s on my 660R, it's all about how good the rider is man, the only true differences is the 700 is fuel injected, but high performance Carbs on a 660 will keep you in line with the 700s easy!!
Alum/steel hybrid frame, wider and more stable (by all reviews), better suspension, FI, 686 vs. 660.. it's better. 660 is great, but 700 is better. If it wasn't, it wouldn't sell.
Another great video! Those tires are the ticket in the snow.
That looks so fun..sucks Down here in Georgia we never see any snow..and if we do get anything it’s mostly ice and it’s only stays for barely a day🤷♂️
you should make sure they don't rub against you're heal guards. 4 snows expand like crazy
Proper tires make all the difference in the world
I’ve got a 400ex with Maxxis razor tires (normal tires) and I just sit there in spin in the snow
I GOT those in the rear on my 250
Same my 400ex just spins
Ocelot makes a model like this also. Think I might pick up a set on spare wheels and a front ski kit to tinker with next winter.
Now I won’t a raptor😂 nice video.
Haha I live in Minnesota aswell! This winter is a bust so far! I can't even snowmobile. And that ice, we got 3 inches of ice literally everywhere it sucks!
Now we just need a video of you trying it with the quad skis you can buy on eBay for 125$ and try this out in some deep snow! Like 3ft
lol I've thought about it. I've seen some videos here and there and snowmobiles are just so much more efficient 😅
Pete Hager PROVE IT, your 700r is all done up.if there were any quad/rider to do such an amazing video on performance in the snow it would be you. It would be a sick video
I ran the maxis for snow tires on my 06 yfz450. Loose snow they're amazing. But living in northern ontario canada ontario ive run on groomed sled trails and omfg fast as hell. If you start to get stuck grab another gear ... pin it n dump the clutch... careful you might end up on your back. The cool thing about these super soft 2ply tires is thw faster you spin them the taller and narrower they get. They grow to about 24 inch. Go up 1 tooth on front sprocket and youll pull 95mph on packed ice snow on the yfz450 all day.
those are some nuts numbers but i totally believe it with a taller gear ratio and those massive tires on the rear. I cant wait to get it on some hardpack snow, I know they'll really work well! thanks for the feedback!
@@PeteHager have you ever ran radar or gps your top speed. Youd be suprised how fast they go. My 01 raptor 660r with 686 big bore stage 2 hot cam. Ported n polished head. Pro circuit full exhaust. With the stock radial tires studded ran 86mph. Went to a 17 tooth rz350 front sprocket and open air box lid ran 109mph. Cut the front fenders off gained 4mph for 113mph on gps at -18f on glare ice on the lake. Try a 17 tooth front sprocket. Down low you loose some but if your making enough power to hit the rev limiter you'll be movin. By the way avoid pavement with the for snows.
@@endurotruckererniedesjardins I have a short video with the machine topping out at 79 with stock gearing. Thats a massive front sprocket on your 660. Those speeds are crazy on a four wheeler! Going that fast on the ice would be nuts!
That's too high of a gear, Any higher then a 15 on the front sprocket and ur acceleration is cut in half, personally I love my acceleration, without it i wouldnt be able to beat my friends. I have a 14 on my 660, quite alot of modifications and of course maxxis X tread tires, I can hit 83 on a Nice Flat Road!
@@DAREDEVIL503 i had one goal in mind. Go fast on gps and radar. It was just for fun. I normally ran a 14 up front with 20 inch fast trekkers for tires. Keep in mind this was in 2001 to 2004.
Those tires look backwards like you have them the wrong direction. I know with sand paddles the cup part is supposed to be forward, now I don’t know anything about those snow tires so might be totally wrong. Just pointing it out. If I’m wrong sorry. Badass quad man love this channel.
I thought the same thing but I have the directional arrow on the tires facing forward
Ok. That’s kinda weird isn’t it? They seemed to hook up great.👍👍👍
@@philipf.1352 it is weird, i would assume it has something to do with the paddle pattern. I instinctively wanted to put them on the other way because it looks more aggressive. Maybe someone with more experience will comment
Was thinking a sand paddle would also work well, except these For Snow tires do have a lateral rib to bite for the sideways drifting and are larger in diameter obviously. I'm sure your gearing was affected but probably not badly.
@@exothermal.sprocket The gearing felt about the same. I ran some straight paddles in the snow years ago on my KTM and they hooked up really well on hardpack in a straight line. I'm excited to get these tires in some firmer conditions to see how they hook. These also grow with speed, theres a cool youtube video showing the tire growth on ice if you search Maxxis 4 snow
We use 4snow tires in the desert here. Waaaaay more better than stock tires.
Love it 700 looks very good
Great video once again!👍
flip the tires around so the paddles are hooking on accl. the way you have them now will only help when braking! they will work even better when flipped
They work good in the sand also. Had them on a 250 recon and could do wheelies in powder from a stop. They hooked up great
Some stunning riding places, rubbish here in the UK nothing like this 😑 great vid 👍👍
RacingWithTom UK where about are you
@@connorblairbridgeford5359 manchester me pal
They been running that tread pattern on Dixie Chopper mowers for years 🤣🤣
If you use the sand front tires (the ones with one stripe in the middle) wouldnt help? Great vid!
We run spiked tires on front, just surfing around for ideas to rig skis, I think that would work really good here, we get tons of snow.
This was his first ride. ua-cam.com/video/7P7HtkICFJg/v-deo.html
Love your videos!!!
Whats also great for winter that i realized one day is hand guards. Good god theyre great lol
Your welcome!!!
Come to Montana but wait till April so I have my raptor and there is raptorman406 in Montana
Riding in the highway is cool.
Love channel dude keep up the good work 👍🏿
If you’re in a place with lots of powdery snow, just use paddles, while these tires are great for areas with thin amounts of snow and dirt
Amazing I have a 450 and with the stock tires I get stuck in 3 inches of snow
With the 4 snows we run skies on the front and haul ass on groomed sled trails. Works really good
Sweet brother!
Oh yeah , that clearance has to make it night and day.
Awesome!!
Good god the opening clip I thought my yfz was loud 😂😂
Put a ski kit on the front now and you'll be unstoppable.
I've looked at them!
I wouldn't think that open paddle style would be very good in the snow, usually lots of little rough edges are more effective in the snow.
You and your friends should all have a race and or y’all should play hide and seek tag four wheeler edition
looked they worked great in snow, last time i was in snow on a sport quad was on my Banshee with Turf Tamers. wish i would have had a set of these on it
lol turf tamers wouldn't work the best I would imagine lol
looks good for sand!
I suppose I could try them if I get down to little Sahara this year!
I have a 400ex that I'm putting ITP sandstars on for the snow. I'm exited to see how it works
And then..?
@@travisclarke9214 I ended up getting rid of my 400ex and buying an MX built 450. I tried the sandstars on the 450 and they worked pretty well in the powder. I was able to wheelie through 6-8 inches of snow with no problem.
@@williamdarling3873 thanks man.
In the fence about what to grab.
Everybody said dont but a race quad in Canada, so far they been right🤦♂️🤣
At the beginning around the 00:44 sec mark lol I heard those words quite a few times before
Try flipping them around. I bet they work even better in snow..
I really want to try these on my ds 450 I tried studded razor 2s last year on my yfz but I have yet to try actual snow tires and for the amount of snow we have this year you would def need somthing like these to get anywhere wondering what it be like in a deeper situation
That looks fun
whiere u live in the us man? im always down to go riding if u ever find urself in CT... holler my way if ur ever in ct man take care eep riding
I'm in southern Minnesota! I would love to ride out east sometime!
Hell yeah !!! That looks FUN
How much air were you running in them ? They looked like they were too inflated I had a set on Kawasaki KFX 700 and I would put low air pressure in them I can’t remember exactly how much but the size wall would bulge a bit it made a big difference on groomed trails I would be able to pull wheeles at will I always wonder what would happen if someone had a set that would fit a high powered 4wd ATV.
I had 5 pounds in them, I shouldve ran less but I talked to a few people on forums and they said 3-5. Next time I'll try them with less
Good job bud
reaally nice video one question How much miles u get or hours with full tank with this badboy 😊
It depends on how you ride it! I would think at least 100-150 miles per tank. I've done 80 miles between fill ups. My gas light was on those times though. If your not flooring it constantly it does pretty well
I never did get used to or like thumb throttle. I use a twist throttle from a cr250 on my 87 250r
Is that tire pattern not just a sand tire with 4 snow written on the side? I seem to remember that exact design from 20+ years ago.
It may be? I know they've been on the market for quite awhile and alot of guys seem to use them in the sand and even on the dirt.
Now you just need a KTM 300 with a timbersled on it to compare.
lol we would need a bit more snow for one of those
Great tires I run them year round wrapped with chains here in ohio
Turn them around better yet
I have them with the directional arrow facing forward. I was unsure if facing them the more aggressive direction would increase wear?
Look at my channel in my older videos to see my raptor 250 with 4snow and skis in the front! Its amazing how it can go in 2feets of snow!! :O
hey bro If you have time I have the same quad was wondering if you knew of the top. what is the model of the bars that you have on the raptor.
I have the Pro Taper Contour bar and the bend is "ATV mid"
SO RIPPIN!!!
Is this really a 700? It don't seem to have much power the way it was bogging up the hill climb. And the roosts didn't throw the snow that far. Seem more like a 350.
They all right
.for 1inch of snow
You need a ski kit for the front
Hey Pete, thinking of buying these for a trip in 2 weeks. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Do they rub on your heel guards when you get moving? I am torn between these and the SunF version. The SunF are 6 ply so they cant expand the same as the Maxxis 2 ply. Pro and Con...the expansion helps in that deep snow no doubt but I am concerned with the rocky terrain here in northern PA mountains that I poke a hole in a 2 ply tire. any experience in rocky areas that you rode with these? thanks
Wire up heated grips
thats a good idea!
They look like they would be great in sand also.
big dank you
Sick
I ran geckos on my Trx 450 they worked really good so fun
u finnaly got some nice ;) told u they are great
Definitely happy with them!
Great video! What ramp do you use to load the raptor?
The brand is Highland. I've had these ramps for a decade and they're still working just fine! heres a link www.amazon.com/Highland-1121400-Aluminum-Tri-Fold-Loading/dp/B0007Y8LHS/ref=asc_df_B0007Y8LHS/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312061963574&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3902645648976914919&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019864&hvtargid=aud-466360936450:pla-569737928391&psc=1
@@PeteHager Sweet! Thank you!
are those tiers fit on 20x10x9 which is the original raptor 700 wheels and what is the recommended size to fit on the wheels if it’s fit , 9 or 8 thanks.
Jassim Al-Najar they run on the factory 9 inch wheel 👍
Where do u live at bro? The riding conditions are awesome
Southern Minnesota around Mankato
Love rhe video and overall the channel❤️
I thought you had to remove the heel guards with those tires, but I see yours are still on?
yes I have the 22inch 4snow's. I haven't looked to see if they make taller tires but so far they've worked great
very good video like
Loved every second of this nice ride video but what I don't understand is how you get away with driving on roads even close to them.
Cops here would Smash you off the road within 30 minutes of starting up your bike and making noise.
I must live in a bad town for this type of stuff 😁hence why I sold my 86 Kawasaki 😪
One day out for a ride minding my own business for the 4th time I had enough 👮🤛😡
Dang cops tried to nab me but their to slow and can't catch a cold so I sold the bike. Anywho another sad story I know.
Stay safe keep these awesome vids coming ❤️👊💪🏼
were legally allowed to ride in the ditch and we can ride on the shoulder if the ditch is deemed "unsafe" or "inpassable" More or less just don't do totally wreckless things at the wrong time and they don't bother you. I have sheriffs drive by me all the time. The DNR almost always stops me though.. Normally just to check registration and atv safety
Pete Hager
Yeah I hear you. Having a registered insured bike here don't save us from the Fire.
There is a quad group here and (ONLY)they get to ride together without being smashed or charged.
Some cops Smash and ask questions not.
Have to put it into perspective as I was almost Killed by a cop who didn't have the Balls to come to court to testify his claims were true
Which they were Not.
Screwed and Lost my Roofing business lost my liscence and took a federal charge out of the Shit Deal.
And all I was doing was going for a drive then BOOM
100% totalled bike
Rear rim was exploded and flattened like a pancake / frame twisted and sent Flying into a prickle bush. Was cut up from head to toes.
That's a minds eye view for ya to ponder.
These days when a police officer tells me where to drive my RC cars.
I tell them to fuck themselfes and just keep walking away.
There is a new law for alcohol for motorists now to that will have cops treating us as if our rights don't exist.
This is the mindset all cops have. To treat us like a lesser being.
Good thing I don't drink. Just sting.
Happy riding 😁 be safe Brutha 👊😎
No one’s talks about the front tires for riding 700r in the snow! What’s best for floating over snow?
technically ground clearance is your best friend in the snow so a 22 or 23 inch trail/dune tire could work well. For front tires I run 22 inch sand stars with my 4snows. You could also look into getting a ski conversion kit but I've never tried one. The front tires are just dead weight so the skis would be interesting 🤔
@@PeteHager I like tires for bump absorbing qualities and you can touch pavement without worrying about skis. Besides my theory is a quad will never replace or do what a snowmobile can so why try to make it some thing it’s not. And I 100% agree with you on the ground clearance! Realized the underbody skid plates intruded on the clearance
Is it better to use this tire or put chains on normal Tire?
I would rather have this set up then chains on an normal tire. Apparently you could run chains on these snow tires, that would probably be the ultimate set up, the tires were only $65 a tire on 2wheel.com
Run studs for ice in a normal tire. 300 in each rear tire screw in type. But for snow trail ripping run the maxis for snow. Chains are only good for slow speed. If they come off at speed they destroy everything in their path... like your leg n ankle become hamburger. Ive been at this winter atv riding since 1983. In 85 i bought a new atc 250r race 3 wheeler. Honda offered a tire made by oatus alot like the for snow in their upgrade catalogue. It also worked really good. So keep the chains for plowing snow to be safe
@@endurotruckererniedesjardins good insight on safety with the chains at speed
