Odysseus meets Scylla and Charybdis

  • A clip from the 1997 TV movie. Starts with Penelope weaving her shroud. I actually like the changes made here- with making the crew meet Scylla in a confined cave and having them drop of into Charybdis over a waterfall. The original setting in the book is good as well.
    The Odyssey is very important to me, because my dad used to read me a kids version with beautiful illustrations when I was young. I also frequently watched the 1997 movie. This month I read through the proper version of the Odyssey for the first time, and it made me want to go back and see if the TV movie I loved so much as a kid still holds up...
    My consensus as an adult is that its still good but does have some flaws, the main one of course being the limited budget. However most of the cast is really good! Specifically, I really liked the portrayals of Odysseus, Athena and Eurymachus. Also the main theme is nice.
    Christopher Lee is in this movie, and Eric Roberts, who plays Eurymachus, is the brother of Julia Roberts and the father of Emma Roberts

      Indeed! Greek monsters were almost comically fearsome at times. The phrase "between a rock and a hard place" that we use today to denote a situation between an awful factor and something even worse is actually based on a much older phrase, "between Scylla and Charybdis." In the Odyssey, Odysseus was advised to stick closer to Scylla's side of the strait because Scylla usually only devoured 6 sailors at a time, whereas Charybdis would suck in and destroy entire ships. Even then though, Scylla sometimes decided to strike more than once. 😁 Truly a spine chilling scenario.

      Yes, because Circe warned Odysseus about them, and she told him that him that it was better to lose 6 men to Scylla than to lose everything to Charybdis and yet The Miniseries had Odysseus lose his crew to Charybdis in a Waterfall after coming out of Scylla's Lair in The Cave.

      If I remember right he is warned of the two and decides they will go closer to Scylla. They do and get attacked. Somehow after they escape and go some other places the gods push them back leaving them to pass the two monsters again. The second time they decide to go closer to whirlpool monster (won't try to spell it's name...) and I forget what happens but it's bad. The last of his crew eat the sun gods cattle and somehow it causes the last of his crew to die.

    Pretty brutal way to go. Escape one monster and get devoured by the next. That's rough for Odysseus too witnessing the loss of his ship and crew after all they'd been through. And the only fault they made was sailing with a great man who was cursed to see those around him die.

    Ancient Greek monsters are the best. Scylla was generally depicted in 2 ways. In Homer's description, she was a mass of flesh on a rock, bearing 4 eyes and having 6 heads with nothing on them but gaping mouths, each full of 3 rows of razor sharp teeth. 😅 She would typically only eat 6 sailors who passed by, one for each head, but would occasionally strike more than once. In the second depiction from ancient pottery and the like, she was a beautiful woman from the waist up, but had writhing serpentine tentacles growing from her waist, along with the heads of 3 vicious dogs. 😅 I always thought it was strange to have dog heads on a sea monster. Sharks or something would have been more fitting. Still cool though.

    • @veigar1999
      @veigar1999 5 місяців тому +3

      the version with the dog heads around her waist is a refrensce to her name "scylla" meaning female dog in greek but its mostly used to describe a vile/terrible woman , basicly calling them a bitch but in greek XD

    • @sirnarwhal9911
      @sirnarwhal9911 4 місяці тому +2

      The dogs are most likely added in because something sounded like "barking" as sailors lose their lives to this incident.
      In The Wild Hunt, Norse believed in an otherworldly party abducting people through a snow storm sometimes with the announcement of hounds and lightning. So when the Greeks made Scylla part dog, they probably mistake the sound of thunder for barking.

    Too bad they exclude the Sirens and the Helios island as part of the obstacles. The sirens part is one most iconic in the story and the Helios Island helps to showcase the religious/mythological aspect of the poem: Much like the wind bag, Helios Island is another challenge Odysseus failed because of the crew actions (in this case they ate animals that belonged to the god Helios), resulting in the gods killing them and destroying their ship. Only Odysseus survive because he refuse to eat the animals, obeying the gods rules.

    Both monsters' teeth bear close resemblance. Looks like they're coming from the same family.

    I one story Scylla had tentacled arms to grab six sailors and she also dragged the boat toward her when he tried to sail between them.

    Seeing Charybdis is scary enough, but being in the water with it is terrifying.

    I can't believe I never knew Scllya was in this move. I loved it when I was little but the only part that I remember was (as i put it) the sea of teeth. I didn't know Scllya was right before it!

    Καλή ταινία, αλλά με πολλές βασικές παραλήψεις σε σχέση με το Ομηρικό έπος.

    At some point I was expecting a terrified Alex to appear on the boat, hyperventilating, staring at Tim and saying -Where's the goat?

    im currently in Italy at the time of commenting this, and I wanted to visit the Strait of Messina where Scylla and Charybdis lie. unfortunately, it cannot fit in the schedule. Which is a shame because I really wanted to see the Strait

    This miniseries is far from perfect, but the scene with Scylla and Charybdis is very cool and the design of the monsters is great.

    Finally found it
    Watched it like ten years ago in the school and after that has a Fear of Sea monsters it’s very nostalgic and pretty much still freaking creepy
