The original Medusa scene scared the crap out of me as a kid. First Medusa was ugly as hell, then the dark and dimlit red scenery giving you that danger feeling, and that tense orchestrated music added to the suspense.
As a kid I remember libico maraja's illustration of Medusa in the Greek series of stratikis "Greek mythology", which was so convincing that almost caused me nightmares! Alternate name of Medusa was 'gorgo'...
Agreed. I've only seen it the one time, I barely remember what happens. The whole thing was like a video game. There's just so much love and attention put into the original, even down to details like the pillars. Most people wouldn't even know, but they are not meant to look like something from Classical Greece(c.~500 b.c.) but rather the Bronze Age(c. 1200 b.c.). Just a small detail that would suggest to anybody with the knowledge that Medusa was a creature from an earlier time. The new one? Carved Corinthian fluted columns, just like any theme park depiction of ancient Greece would show. It's not even a contest.
@@richardrodriguez3004 I agree 100%, my friend. Especially since I am a fan of Greek Mythology and it was one of the first movies I saw as a kid when we first got HBO back in the 80's.
When I was about 12 years old there was a guy in school who got picked on by another for no apparent reason. He would tell teachers and the principal but they would say, "there has to be a reason. What did you do to him?" And they just let it continue, day after day, believing that he was antagonizing him. He finally got fed up and went to teachers and the principal as well as every classmate he could find and said, "Well there is a reason he picks fights with me everyday. It's because I walked in on him giving another student a blowjob in the bathroom. Suddenly they cared. They didn't care about him getting picked on and assaulted, but for some reason they came alive when they thought he was sucking down cock. The bully eventually checked out of school and had to repeat the grade.
Agree, in mythology she was beautiful until being changed into a monster. They got that right in 1981. In the remake they kept the beautiful face, rather than the monstrous one of lore
How do people not realize how much better CGI is. The first one is literally a joke, the new one is so so so much better. And you can't even say that stop motion is better because the people put more work into it because CGI is incredibly difficult to work out perfectly, especially on a scale as grand as the remake.

@@theuglyduckling2068 CGI is cartoonish and the lighting never looks right. 😆 Harryhausen's Medusa is beautifully lit, and the fact that it's a physical object immediately gives it a sense of weight that CGI is incapable of attaining. Videogame kids probably get excited over CGI, though. 🤭
The original is the winner hands down people can of course have different opinions but the remake just doesn’t have the suspense it’s more about the action every 2 seconds when you build suspense as masterfully as the original you can rewatch it over and over again and still get excited
I think Medusa does look pretty cool in the remake (despite my love for Harryhausen's stop-motion), but the overall scene in the original is better. The dark, flickering lights and Perseus having to listen for Medusa make it really tense and suspenseful. The remake is well-lit and fast-paced/action-oriented. Not bad, but the atmosphere in the '81 version is better.
Agreed. It's a shame, because CGI *can* be used to make some beautiful thrilling scenes! But instead, most directors opt for flashy and fast-paced and action. No one really tries to create the same _atmosphere_ of suspense and fear and dread that Ray Harryhausen created in some of his best scenes. Medusa is a near unbeatable monster. Simply looking at her can cause your death. That's terrifying! How can the hero even begin to fight something like that?! The Remake discards that fear almost completely. The fast paced action relaxes our brain into "they'll figure something out" automatically. *Execution.* The Remake's issue when compared to the original was "execution", that very key word. At least, in regards to Medusa's moment.

Great comparison! CGI and action definitively added something, but at a cost. The old movie wasn't perfect but it had more depth, better dialogue, and atmosphere. In the end two very different movies.
Rest in Peace RAY HARRYHAUSEN - you were a MASTER...and yes, the original scene had a darkness and a creepiness in her movements that the CGI version lacked, they totally missed the 'MOOD'.
Eu aprecio a tentativa do remake de fazer algo diferente do original, mas mesmo com uma movimentação mais realista e melhores efeitos, a tensão e suspense da cena original capturam muito melhor a sensação de estar junto a uma criatura como Medusa
Clash of the Titans in ‘81 was and always will be one of my favorite movies. Harry Hamlin with the greats Burgess Meredith, Ursula Andreas, & Laurence Olivier along with the rest of a wonderful cast will always be the best. I’m not bashing CGI or how technology has brought so much to the movies, it’s just you gotta love the way they did things back then. The witches with the Eye, or how Madusa’s snake hair moved, or how Poseidon looked like he was glued on the screen when he went down into the sea to let out the Kraken, lol, I don’t know, maybe I’m being nostalgic. I just love the look of the fantasy movies from the 80s. 😍😁
I remember the classic one from my childhood, and as an adult, it's far more effective. The special effects were good for the day, and Ray Harryhausen was a master (I think this was the last film he worked on.) I didn't see the remake, but found this comparison clip video, and I'm glad I didn't waste money or time on it. But now I want to see the original again.
Old Medusa Scene = creepy stop-motion, horrifying monster, tension-filled music and moments. New Medusa Scene = Hot bitch with a tail after some douche in a video game.
The special effects of today may be bigger and brighter, but it doesn't matter how dazzling they are, you still need a talented filmmaker to make them work in the context of a film. The more recent Clash of the Titans may be glossy and slick, but I couldn't detect a single moment of tension in the entire film. The original had it's flaws, the Medusa scene goes to illustrate that you don't need hundreds of millions of dollars to create a good movie- just a good imagination
I think the original has more atmosphere, even though the FX have dated a bit. I'm a fan of Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion FX work and always will be. To design, create, animate and superimpose a character like that on the screen alongside real actors takes the work of a skilled artist. RIP Ray.
No comparison here IMO. The original is my favourite film of all time.. seen it hundreds of times and the Medusa sequence still gets the adrenaline pumping because of the anticipation it brings. I was so upset at the remake - the CGI spoiled it for me, not a patch on Harryhausen’s genius stop motion. Medusa is supposed to be a terrifying Gorgon, which is shown in the original, and that upped the scare factor even more. I know it’s mythology, but the remake is just too unbelievable and fake. At least with the original, the way it was made, the film locations, the costumes and casting made it look and feel so much more realistic and authentic. Exactly the same situation with the Kraken.. I laughed in the cinema as I just thought it looked ridiculous! And the fact Bubo was in it for less than 2 seconds made me soooooo mad 😂
It's funny that you think the new Kraken is laughable when looking back at how poor the old one looks in comparison. I'm sorry but the old one literally looks like a toy getting propped up on something while the new one looks realistic and scary af
Blame Sam Worthington for that; he thought the mechanical owl was stupid and out of date, and refused to do any scenes with the owl; even threatening to quit if they didn’t cut out the scenes with Bubo. While I agree the old Bubo DID look a bit dated, with some minor updates and improvements to his body he would have KILLED it as an enchanted construct, as he did in the original film, while still retaining enough of his trademark look to be recognizable. Sam only needed to give the concept a chance, and it would have worked perfectly. Heck, Bubo was just as iconic as Medusa in this movie; when this film is mentioned, the first things people think of are Medusa and Bubo! But Sam remained stubborn, and thus the remake lost one of its most memorable characters, along with Pegasus. I also agree that the remake’s scene lacked the suspense, tension, and terror of the original. The original may seem dated by today’s standards, but the cinematic elements of that scene more than make up for it. That’s the problem with movies nowadays; they rely too much on fancy CGI, while having weak plots and hardly any substance or thematic elements to them.
This video is a good demonstration of cinematic craftsmanship versus special effects. One bead of sweat on old Perseus is more emotionally evocative than new Perseus's entire scene.
Bailey Chasteen Agreed. You can really get into the suspense of the moment in the 1981 version, especially since you can hear all the creepy breathing noises she makes.
It's seriously laughable how instantly forgettable the new one is compared to the old one. What a treasure it was to watch that as a kid, and still today it's one of the greatest movies ever.
Arklay Facility agreed, and even better the animator for that movie is my all time favorite person in the movie industry, that animator being ray harryhausen.
I agree for the most part, the bit where guy allows himself to be turned to stone, and smiles as it happens is pritty cool. But yep the original is far better.

All these new heads don't have appreciation for anything that didn't occur in their timeline. That's why they think this bullshit, bad Cg that dismisses the laws of physics is awesome. So close-minded and unknowledgable about the world in general.
There's actually one really late version of the Medusa myths from the time of the Roman Empire that implied that Minerva didn't mess with Medusa's face. Minerva was such an asshat, she left Medusa's beautiful face intact since it was her beauty that got her raped by Neptune in the first place. Also, kind of messed up for the victim. You hear all these stories about how Medusa's repulsiveness killed people only to find in your dying moments that she really is beautiful. But no one will ever know about that because no one lives to tell the tale.
The original scene seems genuinely threatening and menacing. The remake felt like a scene from a badly-paced video game, complete with pointless drama to make the hero look more skilled and allow him to win.
Yes the original one did feel more menacing, and more suspenseful. And maybe that is because they didn't have the capability of CGI, but that was not a bad thing. The Medusa from the original looked frightening and did seem intimidating once you looked it in the eyes. The new one looks...adorable lol and not that scary when you see her snake like face. I think they did the best with the material in the original, a scene like this needed to be suspenseful, not action packed with slow motion jumps and screaming, as well as intense music. I think they were too busy making it look pretty in the remake rather than making it work well.
+EverythingFan02 The new medusa looks too human,a female with a conscience. Try too hard to be evil and vicious. Which is pretty human. The original medusa looks like non human, monster without a consience like animals. The new medusa fight scene is too imaginary, the older version is realistic, you can't run far, and you need to act quickly because that thing is coming.
+EverythingFan02 I agree. While the old clay one wasn't as polished as the new creature, it looked more frightening. Also the scene was more darker and intense and had a better build up of suspense. Medusa is one of the all time most frightening monsters; how could the director f*cked that up.
Computers have ruined movies. 1981 > 2010 When I was a kid I asked my mom to fast forward past the Medusa part because she scared the shit out of me....New one can't hold a candle to the old one. (New Medusa is hawt tho :P)
One of the reasons the original Medusa surpasses the one in the remake it's because there was a real feeling of suspense. In the original, Perseus and his friends are in a room with very little light and very little room to run around in. In the remake there's a lot of lights and a lot of room to run around in. And besides, Perseus ended up fighting Medusa all by himself. And the closer Medusa got to him you could really feel that he was scared. I know because I was scared
You guys only like it Bec you grew up with it, in my openion it's trash in thr original because she wasn't ugly in Greek mythology in fact she was still beautiful, only thing is no one could gaze upon her, you all day the first one was better but the acting was trash and I could predict every movement before it happened and I've only seen it once , there was no suspense, I was not scared, and I was not interested,
@@Clearskies3848 It's obvious that you were never raised with an appreciation for the aesthetics of Classical Art, of which the original The Clash Of The Titans is rife. 😂 Just look at your lack of punctuation, etc. 🤭
@@Clearskies3848 It really depends on the source whether Medusa is ugly or beautiful. The older the source, the uglier Medusa is. It was largely due to poets like Ovid and later artists' depictions that we think of Medusa today as beautiful or "sexy." You just didn't like it because your generation doesn't even understand what film craftsmanship is. Your movies have no dialog (costs too much to translate into other languages), no aesthetics, no beauty, no meaning; they're just crass, meaningless, plotless hours-long action sequences crowded with bad CGI effects. Your entire generation needs to take a film class that starts with The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) because you have no idea what film is supposed to be. When filmmakers had less to work with, they understood that the story was everything. Now filmmakers have everything and stories have suffered significantly- are there even stories?
Assisti esse filme quando tinha 7 anos e agora, aos 41 vendo essas cenas ainda acho a primeira versão muito melhor, mais realista e angustiante que a atual versão, mais cheia de ação e fantasia demais
Exactly. And the suspense and animation was amazing, but you are correct, Medusa is supposed to be ugly. I was very disappointed by the new "Clash of the Titans" all across the board, but the fact that they tried to make Medusa a snake with sex appeal when she is being punished for her previous beauty etc..., that really bothered me.
Lisa Loynd she was curse with snakes as hair and the snake body but she wasnt ugly it was only assumed by man because u couldn't see her without being turned into stone
Well, back then, they used stop motion (for Medusa, Talos, Godzilla, King Kong etc), wich is much more realistic and feels alive instead of this cgi who is lifeless. Only if they used stop motion today... THAT will be awesome!
The old version of Medusa looked like she came out of a ancient Greek mythology thus making it thought provoking. The new version seemed comic bookish and a bit silly looking. Not to mention, in the original the smoke trail from Medusa's arrows were super cool looking.
Hands down the original is the best. What I thought was cool about the remake Medusa is that they merged conflicting details of the myth. One myth says she was ugly, had green skin, and bulging eyes. Another says she retained her original beauty (besides the snake hair and body) and why it was so difficult/mesmerizing not to look at her. The remake kind of married both descriptions of her to allow both descriptions. She was beautiful until she locked into you and turned into a serpent monster face. Creatures were definitely scarier before the days of CGI, of course.
the whole point of medusa, was that her beauty was taken away after she was punished, Harryhausen's medusa wins. plus the remake didn't appeal to me, too many CGI special effects, terrible acting and above all, no bubo the owl.
Actually their are many versions of medusa. One of the versions they only kept the beauty of her face because that's what got her raped in the first place. Pretty tragic but you are in fact incorrect. Both depictions are accurate.
Ray Harryhausen's Medusa set the standard for the snake body look. He invented it. Up until then, she was a regular bi-ped except in a couple of weird European sword and scandal flics.. His idea, in my opinion, really captured the horror of her curse. The contempt in her expression in the original movie as she stalked the intruders was electric. You were actually worried about Perseus and his men. The new movie, while mildly entertaining, had an assembly line, forced feel to it. I was just waiting for each scene to end (which really disappointed me).
Great to see the original and remake scenes side by side. The original is so good - no one beats Harryhausen, and Harry Hamlin looks like a normal guy facing a horrible task (love how he's sweating while waiting for his moment). Plus the original supporting cast was excellent - Olivier, Claire Bloom, Ursula Andress, Burgess Meredith, Flora Robson, even Maggie Smith!
Ironically I think the exact opposite, maybe because you grew up with that kind of movie making makes you less open to change but dude the kraken and medusa in the old one looks so stupid
Old one, suspense, edge of your seat, real terror feeling, music, atmosphere and lighting perfect for the scene, 10/10 New one, too much action, no suspense, too loud music and cgi is horrendous, total garbage, 4/10
@@rampage75_25 Medusa was once beautiful but was turned hideous by Athena she was never beautiful as a gorgon. In the recent clash of The Titans with the CGI she still looked beautiful despite the snake hair versus the old claymation with live action from 1982? When you mention Medusa was a bit better are you talking about how scary she was or how beautiful she was? I took it that she was better in how beautifully made she is on the recent version of clash of the Titans versus the old which followed the original concept of Medusa a gorgan ugly and scary to look at
All the excessive flying camerawork, falling masonry, leaping about and explosions totally sapped the scariness from the new Medusa. The older one is a masterclass on how you don't need any of that crap in order to have an audience on the edge of their seat. Even with stop motion effects (though some of the best ever) the older Medusa is just more believable. Now if they'd only replicated the camerawork, lighting and performances from the old one but featuring the new Medusa moving the same way, THEN the remake would be worthy.
I was bored watching the older one TBH, I think only people who like it is the people who grew up without CGI , I mean your more likely to like what you grew up with
Nah, I like both, the CGI one for being bold and pretty much making Medusa hot in the face, and her movement frantic, like Don Bluth’s princess Daphne in the second Dragon’s Lair game where she fluxes from a beauty into a monster. Plus she still crawls about like classic Medusa, which to be honest was one of the more frightening aspects of the original. She’s introduced by crawling around as though she has no legs, yet stands vertically upon the body and tail of a serpent. Even the new ones’s beheading looks cute and cartoonish, like a “whoops” moment in one of Don Bluth’s video games.

I Love the Ray Harryhausen movie so much. These handmade effects was much better than the overblow CGI effects and movies. Handmade effects bring more atmospher.
The original; a cult classic and Ray Harryhausen's crowning achievement. A cult classic and a work of art. The remake, modern CGI reliant filmmaking at it's worst and Hollywood in a nutshell. A total piece of crap.
It makes me angry that they made the remake Medusa "beautiful" which in a way, she sort of is. Medusa is NOT supposed to be beautiful. She is supposed to be terrifying and repulsive. So 1981 Medusa gets points for that because she is both repulsive and terrifying.
With all the CGI, with all it's "action packed" choreography, with all the music, the new one doesn't hold a candle to the old one. The old music, the old medusa, the old look was MUCH, much creepier and sinister. Sometimes you have to know when less is more, and this proves that very point. Medusa is a thousand times scarier, the whole scene provokes more anticipation and anxiety in you. The old one is far superior in every way. Hands down.
Yeah but the whole point of the new one was that it humanised Medusa more and made her a much more relatable and tragic figure rather than just a scary monster. But both are close to different versions of the old myth. Also I liked the bit of tension and fear before the fight began in the new one, that was quite well done.
The remake focused on marketing and flashy effects (just like any other fantasy movies these days like superhero movies) rather than on the storyline and depth of the scenes. That’s why even at lowtech, the original is better for me.
The remake tried to make Medusa look like a beauty hidden by the snakes in her hair. Truth is, ALL text referring to Medusa in story revealed her as a "Monster". She might have once been beautiful, but part of the curse was to destroy that from her and make her hate. Original was spot on... a true monster
As someone who is comlpetely unbiased because I've never seen any of these two movies and have no idea about their quality: Original sequence goes for suspense, remake sequence goes for action. Original Medusa is freaky, remake Medusa is hot. Original Medusa has a more imaginative design, remake Medusa is not stop-motion and moves a lot smoother. New Medusa is a better special effect, but the new actor looks less believable as a mythical hero. I'd probably watch both films, original first. Ray Harryhausen is a legend but CGI is not to be undervalued.
excellent assessment, and i agree completely. but i add the following which perhaps confirms the fact that the original stands as a better work: the remake ( either the film entire or this scene ) did not have the impact in the young millenials that the original had in my generation.
vanishy0urself Good analysis but don't you think CGI is overused? I mean I can tell the new Medusa is CGI. Feels like I'm watching a cartoon. Obviously the original Medusa looks fake but my point is that in 34 years we went from a fake looking Medusa to a fake looking Medusa. When CGI is used across the board in a movie it doesn't provide verisimilitude at least for me anyway.
mpags I find complaints about fake-looking CGI a bit of a misblame, actually. The CGI itself has evolved to such a point that you can intercut reality and CG without most people noticing. Consider the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its squirrel scene. Some squirrel shots were real, some were CGI. Can you honestly tell without looking it up which is which? I can't. Maybe it's more apparent on the big screen, I usually watch movies on my computer, so maybe the screen size makes it harder to spot, but still... The whole "feels like I'm watching a cartoon" thing can arise even in movies that _don't have_ CGI due to a far more invasive and intrusive process: digital color grading. Every movie that's coming out now has color grading, but some films go for this extreme, hyper-graded look. Bay-orange and Matrix-green are two really good examples of that. And yes, some movies do it wrong. Granted, sometimes CGI can look _really_ awkward, but any special effect can look awkward. CGI is just a tool, like miniatures. Saying "CGI is overused" is akin to saying "miniatures are overused". In the case of this medusa, she does look a bit fake, but in a way that kind of suits her. The most CGI-like thing is that there's no physical weight to her movements, but that fits the idea of an unnatural mythical monster... although in terms of unnatural movement, no one will ever outshine Ringu's Sadako. Ever.
My Dad watched this movie in the early 1980's. I remember him telling me this story. I watched the remake in 2010. My Dad passed away recently. This clip made me remember his love for movies.
That's not weird at all mate cos you're absolutely right - what you've done is you've pointed out that the original stayed true to the myth more than the remake did cos Medusa is supposed to be ugly, not hot! Before she was punished, she was very beautiful but when Athena punished her and turned her into a Gorgon, she became ugly - that's why every time someone looked her in the face, they were turned to stone. Her face was so ugly to behold, so any onlooker was turned to stone.
To me there is no comparison- the original is much better. The suspense is awesome! This is my favorite Harryhausen sequence second only to the Skeleton fight in Jason and the Argonauts.
The craftsmanship of the stop motion medusa is amazing and scared the bejeezus out of me when I was little. Ray Harryhausen conceived of her and built her in his own workshop. The fact he had to use dolls eyes adjusted each frame with the end of a pencil eraser... Dolls eyes? Shudder... Creep factor ten and cinema magic.
Original is supreme with tension and involved stealth and intellignece. Remake CGI bullshit, model looking medusa, and foolish approach to action no tension.
The old one is more dramatic. However, I agree with the newer version because Medusa was initially the prettiest lady in her city and she was a priestess in Athena's temple. She was raped by the rapist Poseidon because he was angry with Athena being chosen as a patroness of the city by its citizens instead of him. Athena bribed the people with olives and Poseidon tried with horses. Unfortunately for Medusa and her sisters Stheno and Euryale, instead of dueling with Poseidon, she actually punished Medusa, the rape victim who kept her virginity and chastity and dedicated her life as a priestess, who was obviously a mortal incapable of fighting a Poseidon; into the gorgon that she was along with her innocent sisters. Her sisters were made immortal whilst Medusa remained mortal. That's why she could be killed. I think it's fair that the newer version shows her prettier face as she was a pretty innocent lady who became a victim to the pagan deities' rivalries - twice. One time it turned her and her innocent sisters into monsters - they didn't deserve such treatment. Second time, it rendered her dead because some pagan gods and warriors wanted to use her head without getting into casualty although without her consent and resignation.
Both are very cool. Of course the old one's special effects aren't as polished, but it's still very cool and I have a soft spot for it. Loved that movie as a fantasy-obsessed 11-year-old.
ray Harrhausen and stop and go animation that was genius and not too sophisticated but fun and so creative and imaginative he drew the best monsters ever
It'd be a really sad one if they sticked to the original story, but chances are they would just change bits here bits there and make a whole new happy ending.
+DJ Kingzy Not sure if that's a good idea. The original story of Medusa was that she was once a beautiful woman but got badly treated by the Gods. She ended up as hideous creature with the sole task to convert visiting humans to concrete statues. We all know about her end. This is ofc a very intriguing and morally twisted story, but no doubt that Hollywood will flatten it and make a one dimensional happy story about it.
would rather see a real movie. based on her not just an animated one. I think they could get her story in but pit a little extra in. persus in some way was her saviour to me saved her from a curse.to live her days out alone ugly forgotten and cursed with no one to really interact with.isolated this poor woman.
the original one was more suspenseful, so I prefer that one in this scene. plus, the late great Mr. Harryhausen's creative work. I remember watching the movie in my sixth grade social studies class when we were learning about ancient Greece.
The problem with CGI is that everything happens so fast. It's like ADD special effects (no offense to those with ADD, but you get the point). With the original, we were able to appreciate the time and effort that was put into creating the creatures because we could actually see it for an extended period of time (like, more than bursts of 2 seconds.) Kinda sad though because there is so much detail in CGI and it's a wasted effort for the technicians and designers. Anyway....
Original version without a doubt . I was 14 when I watched it... I was supposed to be scared and in total awe and disbelief ...and that is the exact feeling I got.. The new version in 2010 I was 43 and by then nothing scared me or made me jump any more
I’ve watched the original so many times… Every once in awhile I find myself wanting to immerse back into that world… it’s well done. One of my favorite movies…
I agree. The problem with the fight scene of the remake (or, I should say, almost every fight scene of a remake) is that they put too much emphasis on action, CGI and stuff. Its not like in the old times when there was suspense, creepiness... a scene like that should make you wait in apprehension, not make you jump on your couch and scream "KILL IT! KILL IT!"
In the remake, I found myself focusing on Medusa's Maidenform Bra and not on the action, which had too many high-speed chase scenes. In Harryhausen's version, Perseus's fear is very palpable as the sweat pours down his face while she comes nearer and nearer. The head comes off, and Perseus collapses like, "Thank the gods it was her and not me!" The grand finale is when the ketchup gushes out, and his shield is dissolved in it--absolutely OVER THE TOP! The students I was teaching when the remake came out said they preferred the computer graphics. Oh, and they liked "Toy Story" as well.
Hahaha, the Toy Story bit sums up everything perfectly. 😂 Thank goodness my Dad raised me with a sense of appreciation for Classical Art in all its forms.
The original Clash was and still is absolutely amazing..!! one of my most favorite movies ever..!

Tell that to the thousands of people who say "______ needs a remake" about everything.

More realistic? The cgi of the remake is a mess - the original is better in every way.

New Medusa is too hot to be scary. Literally a model
Well... later in Greek mythology she was described as being a beautiful lady until she was raped by Poseidon in Athenas temple and she turned Medusa.
And many tellings of the story. Medusa was referred to as fairfaced Medusa. Unlike her sisters who were hideous she was beautiful.
Lol
She was beautiful until her sisters became jealous. Then she was cursed with the face and body so hideous that no man could ever lover her
Agree, in mythology she was beautiful until being changed into a monster. They got that right in 1981. In the remake they kept the beautiful face, rather than the monstrous one of lore
the original medusa with its jerky movement and rattling tail is indeed the thing of nightmares - the CGI version is slick but not creepy
Just look at the craftsmanship of the stop-motion, it's beyond beautiful 😍
Remake is just a CGI feast, nothing else.

Oh, and don’t forget Maggie Smith as the goddess Thetis. RIP

In the remake Medusa's laughter was what made her even more dangerous.

I like it how the original kept it simple. The remake wanted to make Medusa look more than what she is.
I think the original has more atmosphere, even though the FX have dated a bit. I'm a fan of Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion FX work and always will be. To design, create, animate and superimpose a character like that on the screen alongside real actors takes the work of a skilled artist. RIP Ray.
that guy was a true genius
he was a true genius we owe him much because he scared the shit of us when we were children 😂
And the fact Bubo was in it for less than 2 seconds made me soooooo mad 😂
i did like the remake, but i can agree that the original has that tension that makes it better

+masteroftheassassins It's not even the lighting. It is realistic thats all. Would you run infront of a lion?

The old version of Medusa looked like she came out of a ancient Greek mythology thus making it thought provoking. The new version seemed comic bookish and a bit silly looking. Not to mention, in the original the smoke trail from Medusa's arrows were super cool looking.
i did like the remake, but i can agree that the original has that tension that makes it better
No BuBo it's not clash of the Titans
Bubo did have a cameo, but agreed.
Model played the new medusa and the old was a puppet that moved mechanically
Actually their are many versions of medusa. One of the versions they only kept the beauty of her face because that's what got her raped in the first place. Pretty tragic but you are in fact incorrect. Both depictions are accurate.
Way ahead of its time, really paved the way of how today’s CGI looks now
The original was far superior. It built dread in the scene..whereas the remake made me wonder when Kratos was gonna burst into the scene
Kratos or Perseus? Lol. Are we mixing God of war game with clash of the titans movies? Lol
P1
Ray Harryhausen's Medusa set the standard for the snake body look. He invented it. Up until then, she was a regular bi-ped except in a couple of weird European sword and scandal flics.. His idea, in my opinion, really captured the horror of her curse. The contempt in her expression in the original movie as she stalked the intruders was electric. You were actually worried about Perseus and his men. The new movie, while mildly entertaining, had an assembly line, forced feel to it. I was just waiting for each scene to end (which really disappointed me).
Imagine being in bed late at night. Which Medusa would you fear more entering your bedroom? That's your answer.

New one, too much action, no suspense, too loud music and cgi is horrendous, total garbage, 4/10
I think it is quite the opposite actually.
100% correct.
Exactly. When I saw this at the movies this was very scary

@@rampage75_25 Medusa was once beautiful but was turned hideous by Athena she was never beautiful as a gorgon. In the recent clash of The Titans with the CGI she still looked beautiful despite the snake hair versus the old claymation with live action from 1982?

Don't worry, they'll probably come out with a Transgender Medusa! Now your'e not sure what or who to kill!
Agreed, original is more accuratly done. Remake is nothing but a over done video game.
Too cool! I love Greek mythology! Always has been super intriguing in my opinion
It makes me angry that they made the remake Medusa "beautiful" which in a way, she sort of is. Medusa is NOT supposed to be beautiful. She is supposed to be terrifying and repulsive. So 1981 Medusa gets points for that because she is both repulsive and terrifying.
Nice to see both versions: thank you so much ooxox
Man the original was just fucking, epic.
Top shelf! The whole vibe of the original was so much more menacing than the remake.
Still Luv BOTH versions. The Original is just Classic and Timeless.. and the Remake is Visually Stunning!!!
Agreed 💯
Also I liked the bit of tension and fear before the fight began in the new one, that was quite well done.
mmmh, I don't know, the new one is actually really good.
I've yet to be impressed or frightened by a CGI monster. Large Marge from PeePee's Big Adventure is 1000X scarier than this Medusa.
Yeah, but the zoom ins are so cheesy
Agreed. Never get bored of the original. The new one is ok, but I was never *scared*. In fact, it was more like a chore to have to watch it.
The remake focused on marketing and flashy effects (just like any other fantasy movies these days like superhero movies) rather than on the storyline and depth of the scenes. That’s why even at lowtech, the original is better for me.
Older is WAY WAYYYYYY scarier.
As someone who is comlpetely unbiased because I've never seen any of these two movies and have no idea about their quality:
Original sequence goes for suspense, remake sequence goes for action.
Ray Harryhausen is a legend but CGI is not to be undervalued.
excellent assessment, and i agree completely. but i add the following which perhaps confirms the fact that the original stands as a better work: the remake ( either the film entire or this scene ) did not have the impact in the young millenials that the original had in my generation.
dekubaner Well, I haven't seen the films, this is just a scene comparison. :D
Spoke like a true sage. Respect, for both.
vanishy0urself Good analysis but don't you think CGI is overused?
This clip made me remember his love for movies.
original Medusa gave me diarrea every time I watched the Movie. Great scene and better movie than the new One.
Right? Me too!
This video proves the original to be the best version
That's not weird at all mate cos you're absolutely right - what you've done is you've pointed out that the original stayed true to the myth more than the remake did cos Medusa is supposed to be ugly, not hot! Before she was punished, she was very beautiful but when Athena punished her and turned her into a Gorgon, she became ugly - that's why every time someone looked her in the face, they were turned to stone. Her face was so ugly to behold, so any onlooker was turned to stone.
The 1981 Medusa scene had a true atmosphere and "creepy" feel. The remake was a soulless CGI crap fest.
That sums up the remake period
The original Medusa was scarier and Perseus's sword was WAY cooler than the new one. The new sword is a piece of shit and huge down grade.
The 1981 original was much better, and had a more Classical Greek feel to it then the remake
Curt Wakeman I feel the same was, but that's probably because of nostalgic values
Curt Wakeman I agree :)
Curt Wakeman Yes, definitely. The remake looked more like an action flick than a sword-and-sorcery epic.
The new sword is historically accurate. That's what swords looked like in Ancient Greek. I prefer the new sword over the old.
The atmosphere of the first catches for the whole vision
To me there is no comparison- the original is much better. The suspense is awesome! This is my favorite Harryhausen sequence second only to the Skeleton fight in Jason and the Argonauts.
YESSSS! The skeleton fights are the best!
I like the new one, but I prefer the original. It just has that atmosphere to it that can’t be topped.
it appears to be more of a real-world scena the original medusa that the remake
4:06 her expression simply super
in the remake: does Medusa really need a bow if she can physically move almost as fast as an arrow?
the original and the films of that era was just golden
The craftsmanship of the stop motion medusa is amazing and scared the bejeezus out of me when I was little. Ray Harryhausen conceived of her and built her in his own workshop. The fact he had to use dolls eyes adjusted each frame with the end of a pencil eraser... Dolls eyes? Shudder... Creep factor ten and cinema magic.
Original wins. No contest.
Original is supreme with tension and involved stealth and intellignece. Remake CGI bullshit, model looking medusa, and foolish approach to action no tension.
Medusa's laughter in the remake made her even more dangerous than she looks.
Very. Amazing. Down. To. Earth. Breathtaking. Action. Movies. I love. It. !! Thanks. A. Lot..
Idk why but Medusa is the most fascinating character I've ever come across in any story.
ray Harrhausen and stop and go animation that was genius and not too sophisticated but fun and so creative and imaginative he drew the best monsters ever
They Need to make a movie about Medusa
I always felt bad for her tbh.
You might like to check out Hammer's Gorgon if you're wanting one where she's the villain.
the original one was more suspenseful, so I prefer that one in this scene. plus, the late great Mr. Harryhausen's creative work. I remember watching the movie in my sixth grade social studies class when we were learning about ancient Greece.
Uma das razões que me tornei professor de história foi por causa deste filme de 1981. Obra prima.
One of my favorite movies…
original was soo much better in every scene.
Thanks
the sound design alone from the original is infinitely more scary then the remake
KILL IT!"
Original has a more sinister Medusa…and superb use of color.
The original is 1000 times better. The fact that you can hardly see her makes the scene much scarier.
