You can get Dorman backing plates that are cut in halves so you can replace them without disassembly of the axles, still is a pita job to do but better than doing the diff - they work fine
Well here is my guess. The axle seal finally failed, allowing gear oil to get in there and get flung everywhere. The owner called his trusted shop for a quote. The cost was so high, he crapped his pants and decided "maybe I'll just park the thing". Truck sat around for at least a few years and that is why everything is rusty. Somebody picked up the truck for a killer deal knowing this was an issue that needed immediate attention, and now we have this super professional how-to video. As you see, it's not a super hard job, you just need a lift AND that special nut socket. And of course an impact ratchet makes things go a litter faster. Cheers !!!
It's called the backing plate. The one from GM comes with the cast part the caliper mounts to. Dorman plates are just the shields at 1/8 of price. Nuts are 15/16". Might be useful to have a 15/16" crows foot to torque properly. No room for a torque wrench on 2 of them

what is the special lubricant used on axle housing before reinstalling hub?
Do you have to install a new hub seal? Or can it be reusable?
Well here is my guess.
