Very good video. A couple of items that should have at least been mentioned (IMHO). I grew up twisting wrenches and it's easy to make vids for tech-savvy DIYers. Add a few more tips to the beginners. All in all, 👏👍 1) Early in the video, when starting to remove caliper bracket. The backing plate is missing. Later it was in place. Unless I blinked and missed it. Should have been noted and what had to be done to replace backing plate. 2) You mentioned the 8mm head bolt on the retainer clip. Needed to mention what had to happen if bolt breaks and the results of just leaving it off. 3) The left and right hand adjuster wheels are oriented quite different from left to right. 4) The importance of grease in the space between the cups because in the northeast we have so much salt corrosion that if the rubber boot over the arm from the parking/emergency brake lever, is intended to (try) keep water, dirt, salt, etc out of the mechanism. Also, the boots can be replaced, although few stores stock them. Nice 11 minute video, would have enjoyed a 15 and a few more details.
Thanks for this vid. You save a major step by decompressing the caliper and just swing the whole caliper and cradle off. Others take the caliper off the cradle and then remove the cradle. (Why oh why?) My brake was bottoming out. It took just one revolution of the adjuster each side and now it engages at half travel. Felt great to do it myself.
When I cleaned the rotor i used a rotary wire brush is not too aggressive and left the surface nice and clean , I did the same with all surfaces to remove the rust .
I've just started the nightmare of replacing all of the steel brake lines on my 03. Park brakes don't work so I get to tear that apart too. Just gotta wait for the rain to stop lol thank you for the great video, I appreciate it!
Definitly don’t want to overtighten that bracket bolt like he mentioned, just broke the head off one. But by some miracle I was able to spin it out with a small punch and a hammer. Another solution would be to remove one of the lug nut studs and use an ez out. Also, I found it much easier to put the little bracket on first and then hook the shoe over it.
Excellent video for the shoes in detail. Do you have any info on how the cable attaches? I had a shop replace the parking brake shoes. I had adjusted them several times since I had the truck. The pads were finally barely left. After being at the shop the parking brake peddle bottoms out. I took apart to adjust, thinking they just didn't know how to adjust these, and the shoes are not mounted with the clip and 8 mm bolt (did they lose them?). The clip that stops the adjuster from turning is also missing on one side. Grrrr. I have a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 extended cab 4x4. Got 230,000 miles on it too! I wonder if the shop attached the cable with a rocker correctly. Thank you.
Dumb question guy right here! Will these steps apply to 2011 2500HD Diesel Chevy Silverado? Currently doing my rear end parking brakes and it's my 1st time so any help, tips, or videos better reffering to this specifically would help! Thanks Yall!
Some threadlocker on the bracket bolts (not slide bolts) is normal practice and doesn't hurt anything. I think the blue is the one that is reccomended, but some threadlocker isn't a bad idea on the bracket bolts.
You definitely are supposed to put red loctite on those, actually you are really supposed to get brand new bolts which come with the red loctite already on them. Red loctite is a better hold for anti-vibration. Heat them with a torch and they come off easy.
Is that caliper grease you were using zinc or can you use anti-sieze zinc. I have a 2003 Z71 Avalanche 1500 and I have to do this in the next few days. Your video is the most informative I have seen and answered a lot of questions I had.
I had to put mine back together without changing anything. The bolt that holds the parking brake is rusted too bad. I'll have to do without parking brakes
I was always told if you're brake fluid is low , you need a brake job. Unless you have a you should never have to filll that system unless you're Flushing it.
what did I do wrong ? One side adjusted a little bit , Other side adjusted right to the bottom (no threads to see) and it is tight with shoes dragging a bit. Raybestos shoes
I've always had trouble adjusting the parking shoes. Not being too tight/ loose but it makes contact and rubs. My question is where is the shoe supposed to sit, down against the mounting bracket? Cause I feel it's never center
My 2001 Silverado parking brake has never held. I've had the entire system redone twice and it still doesn't hold the truck no matter how it's adjusted. It's frustrating because it's required to work for passing inspection. This year they hit me with it during inspection for the first time in 10 years. It cost some serious money and it still doesn't hold.
I have a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. It was a nightmare taking the old shoe off but the new one will not go on. There's no way to just contortion it on there. Is there any little tricks to installing the new one?

This video is appropriate for people who already know how to do the job, but needs a quick reminder. For those of us who have never done the job, this video is rushed and poorly explained.
If the rear parking brake(horse shoe) mounting bracket(the small 8mm bolt) does break off, it’s going to be a long process to fix. If anyone has better way please add… Drain(re-use) diff oil, Remove cover Remove “C-lock” that holds the wheel shaft,(use a rubber mallet to hit the end of the wheel shaft to move inwards of the posi carrier). Use a small magnet to fish out the “c-lock” Carefully remove shaft You can remove the brake housing or leave on Drill out the broken stud Use a self tap screw to make new threads or a tap. I used a self tap screw, next size up. Repeat beginning steps to put back together. 🤷🏻♂️ Mine broke off and redoing everything to be safe.. oh add some sealant/coating so the bolt doesn’t rust/freeze. Or use a “right angle” drill to get between the wheel hub🤷🏻♂️
NEVER use a self tapping screw on brakes. Buy the proper replacement screw and a drill and tap to fit it. The Easiest shortcut to replace the bolt if you dont have a SMALL right angle drill, is to drill a pair of holes in the hub between the studs 180 degrees apart. The second hole is to maintain wheel balance. Once you have the hole drilled into the hub, you can use a standard drill with a longer bit to drill out the old one. If using something like an extractor you will need a long set, or a very short set with a small right angle drill.
Didn't even explain where and how the cable hooks up and why the rubber boots burst out. Piss poop video getting lucky because I broke the small bolt even though I used penetrate. I adjusted the shoe adjuster just with a slight drag on rotor and would do you know. No emergency/ parking brakes. Tighten the cable adjustment and still no parking brakes. I didn't mention this truck never had any parking brakes since I got it from my dad after it was only four years old and less than 50,000 miles. Piss poor GM design
grinding surface rust & metal off the hub assembly seems a bit anal & overkill to me. LOL you should not do anything that resembles grinding on a piece of metal that holds your rim on.. sandpaper is fine, but still not necessary for a brake job. stick to areas the brakes are mounting. otherwise great video.
I have a 99 GMC Sierra, If my peddle goes all the way to the floor and just doesn’t work, could this be my rattle I hear in the back that I’ve been tracking for a long time???

Best video for replacing brakes on this type of vehicle I've seen. Adjusting those pads to the right position is really a pain in the butt.

bro chill
I’ve watched a number of videos on this subject.
This is hands down the best.
Period.
That caliper and rotor cleaned up real nice at the end right before the tire went back on 😀😉 Good video though, thanks!

GREAT VIDEO, QUESTION ABOUT WHERE I CAN FIND THE EXACT TORQUE FOR MY FRONT AND REAR BREAKS TORQUE FOR A CHEVY TAHOE 2003, V8-5.3
It's so funny how Len pronounces vehicle like "vrricle."
Dued aren't u the 1A Auto guy lol. Nice video.👍

Good work sir. You must be a excellent tech
Great video. Informative and lots of attention to detail. Two thumbs up.
Bonus point for the usage of the word: weasel.
What about the lock piece for the adjuster? One never got installed on that truck.

Good video thanks Did you inspect dust boot
Great video it help me to do my brakes I like the pace it was perfect. Thank you
I see you replaced the backing plate. Was this done without the removal of axel?
My 2000 Silverado 1500 has the adjuster on top instead of the bottom in this video.
Dumb question guy right here!

Thank you couldn't get the shoe on thanks you for showing me
I can tell you're a good mechanic
never put locktide on your caliper bolt , specially the red one !! Just dry and good torque .
why he did that i don't know i have no clue

So my adjuster isn't flushed, it pushes out and it expands my shoe and I can't put on the rotor
why didn't you put on the brake shoe when you put on the new backing plate?
Good video.

What are the symptoms of bad parking brake shoes?
Where can I find the replacement adjuster mine froze and rather have new if I'm doing all the work
what did I do wrong ? One side adjusted a little bit , Other side adjusted right to the bottom (no threads to see) and it is tight with shoes dragging a bit. Raybestos shoes
Exelent video,,, help me out positive a lots. To be understood as positive . Thank u.,,
If it leak oil could it be the brake drum unit
'just weasel it off"... video cuts away and restarts....
Yeah, I just broke that 8mm, put hardly any pressure on it too.
Good work bro

What if the shoe won’t fit between the adjuster? One side fit but the other side the adjuster is longer… not sure how to get the shoe on

If that 8mm bolt breaks how do you get it out?
This is my problem.
Pull the entire axle out and try to drill it out or turn it with a punch
give it a bonk!
That e brake set up looks nothing like my 2005 3500 4x4. Mine is made with springs like a normal brake.
give a loving bonk
Like your videos.
