I'm looking to get another body - currently have the 90D - and have been considering the R5 - until this R7 came about.... in your Iso test, did you use the same lens for each camera? it also appeared to my eye the 90D had less focus than the R7 - maybe it was just me - Thanks for the Video

@@missourilandpro6482 I have just switched from 90D to R7 and did some intense testing this weekend. If you have R7 available in nearby stores and can sell your 90D at reasonable price, don't hesitate. It's worth it just for the AF alone, but R7 seems to be a real bargain for that price. My only complain so far is the battery charge status display which seems to be inaccurate and my camera went from ~50% charge to dead in just a few minutes. Other than that, I'm super happy with this purchase.

Very helpful video Glenn! It looks like you beat Jan to the punch talking about the R7. I'm really looking forward to the two of you discussing the pros and cons and comparing the R7 to other Canon cameras. As someone on the wrong side of 70, who started out with the old A1 35mm Canon film camera (and was astonished when Fugi Film came out with 1600 speed film) it is incredible how far manufacturers have come in letting us create images and movies. Thanks so much for all you do to educate us.

Great video, straight to the point and tested in a real life situation. I couldn't agree more with you on the subject of testing the ISO in particular conditions, it seems to me that many people are unaware of how tough it can be photographing in a dark rainforest on an overcast day under a thick canopy, it can be quite challenging and you often push your camera capabilities to the extremes. Much appreciated!

This is a good video. Real world ISO is what some of us were looking for. Lab videos make sense when you have literally hundreds of cameras to test over decades, everything will be compared equally. You can't really go to the same log in the woods and get the exact same lighting over the span of 20 years. Anyway, thanks for spending the time. Noise is noise, and sometimes I leave it as is because I like the pattern it adds to a photo, and other times you don't. But - I think it's fair to say the R7 is fine. I rarely shoot over 3200, I'm out in the sun and when I'm in the shadows I'm hunting for slivers of light or I just don't shoot. That's just me tho.

I'm using the 7D MK II exclusively now - it's an old friend but I'm noticing more and more missed shots an R5 would have captured. Interesting. But I personally think that both DSLR’s missed focus. Also to make things look more even. I suggest downsampling both the 90D and R7 to the same megapixel size then comparing noise and detail. I’m pretty sure the R5 will stand out with better overall quality.

Thanks Glenn. I downloaded your files and had a play with them. This is extremely encouraging for me. After downsampling all the images to the size of the R5 file, and running them all through Topaz DeNoise, the R7 came out looking really similar to the R5 file IMO. They both retained significantly more detail than the 7Dii or 90D. I can't wait to get my hands on my R7!

The R7 will be on my shopping list, but not for some time as other things take precedence (used 500mm F4 IS L (mark 1) and gimbal). I have ageing 1D, 1D Mark IIn and 60D cameras with outdated AF performance vs the modern mirrorless designs.

    • @doghouseriley4732
      @doghouseriley4732 2 роки тому +1

The high ISO shots of the R7 are barely any better than the 90D, not surpising considering they use the same sensor. When the 90D failed to ship the units that Canon expected, they probably had a load of sensors left over. The 90D sensor was barely better than the 7D Mk2. That's one of the reasons that people did not switch from the 7D Mk2 to the 90D. Be very careful getting rid of your 7D Mk2, it is properly weather sealed, built like a tank, you can shoot for over 5 seconds without hitting the buffer (not 1 second) and is a proven camera.
The R7 is a camera that was rushed out because Sony caught Canon cold uses old tech and is not properly weather sealed, like the 90D.

I listened...I downloaded...I compared and I also SUBSCRIBED. I ordered the R7 mainly as a backup to my 2-R6s and for 'its reach'/file size. The noise at 3200 is fine and with a little 'twist' from Lightroom, at 6400, the R7 is fine. When it's all said and done, it's all about the image anyway. Thanks for your review.

Thanks for providing the sample images. I will be shooting is very similar lighting conditions so these were very helpful. My R7 arrives tomorrow so it was nice to see what my new workflow will be like. I opened these files in Affinity Photo (AP), Topaz DeNoise, and also DPP4. As expected AP struggled since Apple doesn't have a raw image engine for this camera yet. Topaz DeNoise did fine, but the denoise affect was too strong at default setting, but I like to make any required exposure corrections prior to using Topaz. DPP4 left a little noise at default settings which I actually preferred. DPP4 had the best color and overall balance without me having to make any adjustments. In fact the 25600 R7 file looked fine right out of DPP4.
For now it appears my workflow will be to use DPP4 and save the files as .tif and do my edits in AP. I know DPP4 has its limitations but right now it handles these files better than my other options.

Images with a bit of noise (not noisy, but a smidge) have a distinct "film" look to them. Whereas denoised images often look "plastic ". I know I too am in the minority, but I honestly think that we have almost reached the point of too much crispness, too much resolution. Some images begin to look unrealistic. Of course, I feel that way about 4k television too. It has a "phoney" look to it. Look around the room, then look at the 4k TV. Reality isn't that sharp.

Thank you Glenn, comparing the R7 to the 7d2, 90D and R5 is exactly the test many are waiting for, me included. I have the R5 and the 7d2 which has been my main bird and wildlife camera for years. The additional reach and especially the eye-AF are very big points in favor of the R7 the more as the high ISO noise even seems slightly better compared to the other cameras according to your test. However, the lack of a grip, extremely small buffer, noisy mechanical shutter vs serious rolling effect and wobbling background in consecutive shots in electronic shutter mode (at least from what I've seen in other tests) make it a tough decision for me. Some report a jumpy AF in busy backgounds, too. Moreover, I'm also not sure if the R7's ruggedness and weather sealing is sufficient for taking the camera to demanding enviroments such as the Arctic etc. I'm travelling to Tanzania in October where dust is said to be a big problem and I'm really struggling with the decision to take the R7 for more reach and excellent Eye-AF or better rely on my 7D2 and R5 in crop mode. As for noise, maybe Dxo Pureraw and Topaz Denoise could level the somewhat better noise characteristics of the R7 compared to the 7d2. So I'm still undecided to go for the R7. Anyway, I'm looking forward in your comprehensive test and comparison.
BTW, I had already commented this 2 days ago here. But strange enough, my comment is "vanished" ;-) ;-)

Just regarding Adobe's processing of the raw files, they look noisier because you're not seeing the true raw file. It's had all this sharpening and contrast added to the file in the background, even though it's not showing you those adjustments on the sliders or the tone curve. These are whats bringing out the noise more. But if you know how to reverse all these hidden adjustments suddenly the files look as good as in Canon's own raw converter. Adobe have copped considerable flak for this, and rightly so, but its amazing how many pro photographers are not aware of it. When you revert to an older process version of lightroom or camera raw, you can now see the hidden adjustments and reverse them. Then with everything zeroed out you change back to the current process version and you now have the raw file. It's a bit geeky, but when I learned about this it completely changed my IQ in lightroom. Just my 2 cents worth for those who care about having full control of their images.

I just wish for this kind of test to include the R6 with a 2x extender attached, given it would put the same amount of pixels on the owl. When cropped to the same size, that would give a good view whether or not the extender decreases the great performance of the R6 to or even below the APS-C level .. Hi Glenn! You talked about the importance of the ISO test in the field, not in the studio. I agree with you. But it is also very important to do this with a consumer lens for wildlife. For example, canon 100-400 mark II, Sigma 150-600. You're doing an ISO test with a professional lens for a few thousand dollars. Not everyone can afford such a lens. I'm sure the results will be different with these bodies and cheaper lenses at high ISO. I'm talking about the sharpness and enlightenment of the lens. It definitely won't answer their questions for many and many will get different results than yours. I think for people who came to the equipment (lens) for several thousand dollars, this video will not be watched. They know and can try it in the right place.

I have the 90D and really struggle with it. I feel like my auto focus is more accurate on my 750D even though its a bit slower. Now the question is do I go mirrorless instead of the 90D???

I think its a good upgrade from a 90D Even just to get eye detect AF.

Sorry to say but the 90D was a lemon. The camera that we were told we should sell off our 7D Mk2s and buy. And now we have deja vu. If you want to upgrade the 90D and don't care about video try a 7D Mk2, you can get good deals on them.

Glenn, great review. Really useful. Next time when you do this kind of review, will you be able to use a furry animal or bird instead of a wooden one? In real world its the feathers or furs that needs cleaning and because of the variable textures and additional shadows, the noise details are slightly different compared to the wooden owl. :) Thanks!

Is there a reason that Canon refuse to issue an IP rating for this camera?
