In this video we discuss the Canon 90d and how it compares against the latest Canon RF full frame Cameras. Sadly, Canon has chosen to market generic cameras that have some serious limitation compared to their older cameras. Is canon holding back technology that could be put into their lower end cameras on purpose ?
We will also talk about the gap in Canon's RF Mirrorless lineup for wildlife photography.

I watched tons of reviews and comparisons and bought today, oct-2023 an canon 90D. And I think 90D was the last amazing camera build before the high tech hype with the new R models. I did not receive my 90D yet, but I confident I made the right choice. thanks for sharing.

Great video. I have a 90d and really love the picture quality and the colors right out of the camera. It feels really good in my hand. I'm not a photographer, I'm just using for family pictures and videos. My only issue with 90d is the lack of IBIS, but for the price that you pay, it is totally worth it. I have been thinking about upgrading to a mirrorless camera with IBIS, but the price on mirrorless is ridiculous. After watching your video, I'm sticking with my 90d for a while. Thanks for the video.

I've been looking to upgrade for a while now and its videos like this that really make me want the 90D. I simply can't justify the prices of some of the high end cameras out there considering I do things as a hobby, and the 90d seems fantastically priced and a good fit for my wildlife/landscape content. Thanks for the info!

I'm looking to upgrade from my 80d and read considering mirrorless but this and other reviews really make a compelling case for the 90d. I'm just a hobbyist and can't justify throwing tons of cash unnecessarily. My priorities are 4k video and face/eye tracking auto focus. I shoot mainly sports and marching bands so it sounds like the 90d may fit the bill nicely. Thank you for posting!

The 90D has most of the same updated features as mirrorless as well.
The 90D has focus peaking in manual focus, it's pretty much a hybrid. DSLR when using the viewfinder, "mirrorless" when using the LCD screen.
Electronic shutter if you want it and dual pixel in live view, and still has phase detect through the viewfinder. Silent shooting, focus bracketing, diffraction correction.
While you can adapt some of the Sony lenses and some extra vintage glass to the mirrorless bodies now with the flange distance difference, I use several lovely old Nikon lenses with a Nikon F to Canon EF adapter. Vintage lenses are totally possible.
The 90D nails focus in whichever drive mode I use, I've never needed to microadjust a lens yet. I use the focus and recompose method of shooting. Never missed a shot with my 90D, whether wildlife, concerts, sports, portaits, focus is fast and accurate. Eye Af, face detect and tracking too.

I've been using the 90D since it came out and it truly is an incredible tool... As a landscape camera its pretty much the best thing you can buy on the market at any sub 3K bracket, especially with some of its extra features like focus peaking and in-built focus stacking... Sadly its not a wildlife camera becouse it has a substandard focus system which is a big step down from better older cameras like the 7DmkII..... (which i had previously).... Roll on the new R7 which should address all of those issues, combining that crazy 32mp sensor with increased shutter speed, and a good focusing system.... I think a LOT of people will be looking at the R7 in the near future.

    • @noelchignell1048

Sadly the R7 is out and although it's a great camera it's not well suited to wildlife shooting in harsh conditions and using big primes especially as it's tiny and has no vertical grip 🥺 Huge disappointment for me and I'll stick with my 7Dii for now

Had considered eventually making the jump to mirrorless but not in a hurry to and hearing about the 90D, I'm sticking with DSLR (if it ain't broke, don't fix it lol) and this sounds like a great camera to have in my collection.

I feel you on this topic. My R6, which is a powerful and amazing camera, can be unreliable at times. In my case, it would sometimes not let me trigger the shutter button when shooting a couple of pictures in quick succession. It feels like this has been an issue for me after their last firmware update, so I am waiting for a bugfix.

Like you as you mentioned in a reply to someone I also have a sl2(200d) and for me after purchasing a Tokina 14-20mm f2 and sigma 30mm f1.4 on top of the 2 kit lenses it came with, the natural progression for me is a 90d without needing to make a complete upgrade of body and lenses or body plus adapter to then have the lenses still get cropped anyway like the 5,6,7 &10 al apparently do. The 200d is a great little learning camera which I've had for 3 years as a newbie of only 3.5 years total, but I'm ready for what extra the 90d brings

The 90D is my number 1 content creation camera. I do macro videos from products and the crops helps there actually. I do not shoot wildlife pictures. News are that canon will come out soon with the R7 which would be great for exactly this but the R7 is going to be far more expensive than the 90D I guess.

Thanks Stafford for this video. Peter Gregg did a video in which he argued the R5 is the natural upgrade to the 90D. At three times the price! I bought a 90D in March 2023 and love it. I already had an 80D for two years. I love combination of the two. I can work seamlessly between the two, they are both so similar and I have both set up identically. For me both the 80D and 90D do well with birds in flight photography.

Thanks for this video, I couldn’t agree more. My new R6 immediately had problems and I sent it back. I have premium EF glass and a trusty 6D2 and 5DS. I’m looking to pick up a 90D in great condition for $650 bucks.
I’m simply not going to give Canon $3000-$4000 for a new camera and an equal amount per new lens. Maybe someday when they stop dragging their feet on the tech but for now, I’m just going to be happy with what I got or possibly even change camera systems in the future.
Thanks for the video and good luck!

I have been looking at all kinds of canon cameras but I seem to always come full circle back to the 90d as the best solution for my needs. The only 1 thing that had me looking at other models was that its not a full frame sensor. When looking at full frame models then there is the price issue as well as missing features like joystick, touch screen, etc. Its hard to find one that has it all. The 90d has the most green check marks on my personal list. I'm upgrading from an old t3i which im still using today for video with a Atomos v5.

Hello, Thanks for the video, it really helped. Just one question. All my photography is done in a studio with a tripod, it is good to go with 90D as compared to R5? All I do is shoot large products like carpets and some real estate clicks with strobes. I was planning to buy R5 this week but I think this makes no sense and I can save a lot of money now, by watching your video and expertise.
So, should I go for R5 or 90D?

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE  2 роки тому +2

Yes totally makes sense. I mean the r5 is total overkill unless you have to have 45 megapixels or high resolution. For studio you can buy a 5drs 50mp for 1499.99 that is full frame canon dslr. If you needs are that simple stay simple the cost of the r5 is ibis, 8k video, super nice evf and shooting speed of like 20 fps. Hope this helps.

My 90D gained a lot in value, in usefulness really, since I went for the Canon EF 100-400mm L II from a similar Tamron, mostly when it came to acquiring and tracking fast moving subjects. I had just previously added an R6 to my RF bodies lineup of one teeny RP. I didn’t bother with BIF with that tiny one, and the Tamron proved mostly useless on the R6 (Canon adapter).
(I just got it back from a Tamron checkup for back focus and it has a firmware update that didn’t come up when I checked with the docking station, and the AF doesn’t end up freezing as it did, it is quick and stable; I haven’t really tested for accuracy yet. )
So my 90D is my fast action little crop monster, though on the other hand the good old EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 has lost its place as a walk around zoom to my only RF lens, the wobbly 24-105mm f/4 L. Did I say ‘wobbly’? I meant ‘lovely’.
So the R6 is more like a ‘slow’ photography camera with the wide angle lenses, and teams up with the 90D in the intermediate range.
I have the strong impression that the 90D will last longer on same or similar batteries. Eh.
I should probably let go of the RP, but I find I’m having more fun fitting my old FD lenses on that camera, even though the EVF is only so so. That’s for much slower photography still.
(The Simmod adapter is just perfect. )
In an anecdotical aside, it’s my second time being left behind by Canon as I was slowly building up my lens kit in one of their systems. The current one isn’t as bad though.
So my bottom line: the 90D stays for another cycle (the R7 didn’t win me over) with the R6. Keeping the RP might be excessive - except it’s tiny, like in ‘mirrorless’.
Enough rambling, I need to figure out what I need to let go of, now.

Interesting, counterintuitive video given the push to mirrorless these days. Your comments on manual focus favoring the 90D were especially interesting. In my opinion, you do have to go to a pretty expensive mirrorless camera to get the performance of a camera like the D500 or Canon 90D. However, you are right about DSLR shutter noise and wildlife. Having said all this I'm finding the exception might be the Lumix G9 and 100-400mm lens. Granted the G9 prefers a little bit of direct sunlight to be at its best but so far I'm getting great results with it for bird photography since the 400mm on that lens is actually an 800mm, 35mm equivalent. I might have a work around for your R5 power outage problem IF like me, you remove the battery from your camera when not in use. I was having power lockup problems with my Leica 114 cameras early on. They would occasionally would just lock up without warning. You'd have to remove the battery and reinsert it and the camera would return to normal. It was often a week or more between outdoor trips with the camera and I found, sometimes, the 114 would drop its custom programming. So I started putting the batteries in Monday, Wednesday and Friday and out the other days of the week. No more lockup problems, ever, I know it sounds crazy but both 114s seem very happy with this arrangement. Having just switched to the G9 I've not had any issues with the camera whatsoever but I'm wondering if I should try the same schedule with the Lumix to take some tension off the battery springs. By the way, I think the G9 may be the exception to having to spend more to get great mirrorless performance. With the 2.4 software upgrade it fits in nicely below such cameras as the R5, Z9 and SonyA1 for those of us on a budget and its subject tracking software does a pretty good job.

Yea, many of the full frame camera solutions right now are not as full featured as m43 systems. Sadly canon/nikon/sony can do what they want and charge what they want since m/43 systems are not really challenging them in that space of photography. Panasonic G9 is a masterpiece of equipment looking back that needs its on video.

I had a 90D for years and NEVER regretted moving to the R6 then the R5 as the AF and low light performance were much better and I was fed up of constant microadjustment to get sharp images on the 90D. I am not anti-dslr. I subsequently wanted a tough crop sensor camera for wildlife stuff and I got a 7D2, which I love and wish I'd bought instead of the 90D at the time. The 90D did produce some stunning images for me, but the focus was just too inconsistent.

Hi Stafford, I have been shooting a P1000 quite a bit. I shoot in a forest and it is often lower light and the images get quite grainy when I turn up the ISO. I also have a Canon SL2 that I have been thinking of upgrading. What body would you recommend (preferably an APS-C so I get a bit of zoom), that handles lower light and birds/wildlife pretty well? I don't mind spending $1000-2500 if I get something that can do what I want. I have been thinking of the 90D but not sure how it would perform.

Thanks for watching. Ok so very tough question. Are you invested into Canon or another company? If canon do you mind carrying around extra weight say a 150-600 sigma / tamron ? Is 600mm or 960mm enough reach for you ? I would think so but never know your situation. So the SL2 is actually a pretty nice camera I had one. If you are looking for compact cameras you can go with the m50mk2/m200, or M mount cameras plus adapter. If you want the full fledged auto focus without any compromises the 90d is probably the most advance system out right now. Canon has a 1.6 crop vs 1.5 so looking at 960mm vs 900. If you want to go Nikon the D500 is probably the best DSLR wldlife camera made FYI. I only disliked the noise from the shutter. If you want super light weight go olympus em5 and a 100-300 and use the 2x digital converter for 1200mm zoom or the digital converter if I remember. Great setup, you can watch my lens comparison video and see how they all stack up.

I then bought a 90D again. In the meantime, I prefer to use it not only for wildlife but for everything that I have done before with full format. I treated myself to the 18-35 from Sigma. I love the 90d but the auto eye focus on the R6 makes is so much easier to find the focus and a better focus hit rate. Ive taken a long distance shot of a whale from shore recently with the R6 at the in camera crop 1.6. Zooming in it did look pixelated and had to Topaz Gigapixel to fix it. Hi Stafford. I’m passing on an issue I had recently with my 90D. A few months ago I was getting wildly over and under exposed images when shooting a burst at 10fr/sec. I operate in manual SS and Aperture with Auto ISO. The ISOs were wildly off in the images, some low some high. I keep those settings in Custom Settings 1 on the Mode Dial. After some testing I deleted those settings in CS1 and then redid them. The problem then was no longer there, back to normally accurate ISO readings. Another seemingly unrelated problem went away as well. The brightness setting for the rear LCD screen wasn’t holding, kept defaulting to setting 4. After deleting and resaving the settings the rear screen brightness setting was back to normal. So if anyone has a similar problem then try what I did.

However I just couldn't get the desire for the 90D out of my system..... so I bought that a couple of weeks ago. As a long time RP owner (and i LOVED IT! compact, affordable full frame, most modern features for photography) and now R7 user (so basically the mirrorless 90D) i think you missed completely the point by comparing a higher end, latest sports/wildlife/video DSLR with a major part of the RF mount lineup from small and only photo centric/"beginner level" EOS RP to the flawed and heavy R (this touchy thing...), the R6 (the "cheap" R5) and ofc their highest MP top model the R5. APS-C DSLR vs only full frame mirrorless from cheap to expensive.
Also, have you ever used the RP, R5 or R6 for longer? I fell in love with the RP (my first new camera and also my first and probably last full frame as well) for basic stuff/photography but especially for astrophotography, with fast primes as well with on the telescope automated via computer (My R7 isnt even supported by the software yet)
I had once also the R6 as a try to replace the RP with a single camera for wildlife aswell the rest (astro, basic stuff, travel, video), didnt work out too well with the poor 20MP and some other major flaws. In general i absolutely get your point (as wildlife beginner), but your whole point is more about high MP APS-C vs any RF full frame camera.
I would definately prefer the R5 on my RF 800 F11 over the R7 i actually have. I would rather crop more on a R5 image than dealing with the super tight FoV which i often dont even find or get the subject into when following. 800mm is tight, but with a little bit of learning and practicing its pretty much possible to even follow little bit faster BIF, but with the 1,6 crop, so 1280mm... no way, MUCH harder and its not easy with 800mm.
Since i got the R7 i also got a 150-600 Sigma lens which compensate pretty good for the missing 800mm, but in video its basically unusable handheld and i already have to force myself to carry this lens more often, unlike the RF 800 which is charming light and good stabilized

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx Рік тому +1

Too bad the R7 was pretty much only weeks away from release at the time of the video upload, otherwise i guess the R7 would have been your pick anyways. At least as much i loved my RP... for wildlife/video it was just utterly garbage (note: i bought the RP as i didnt even thought about wildlife photography, i only knew i would like wildlife photography but i also knew i could not afford longer, bigger aperture Teles (such as the 150-600 Sigma or my personal favorite: the Sony 200-600G) so i limited myself to zoos with a old, dirty cheap 75-300mm IS USM.
Then Canon came up with the RF 800 F11, it was a no brainer for me and i really liked it on full frame, pretty much perfect size and focal length combination for the average dude which isnt willing to carry a 60-100cm long, 4-7kg heavy "lens".

The DSLR shutter sound is being talked about after emergence of MILCs, not before. If I observe the burst sound of my 1DIV from 15 feet away, it's very mild. I never get wild birds or mammals that close. Therefore, the DSLR shutter sound scaring off the subjects is more of a myth than reality.
I'm sticking to DSLRs despite the onslaught of MILC promotions. My exotic native lenses work fantastic with my cameras. I'm planning to get a 90D for the extra resolution and 960mm reach with my composite 600mm (EF 300mm 2.8L IS II + Canon 2x III extender). Moreover, 90D does AF with 27 points at f/8 (sometimes I would like to pair it with my EF 400mm f/5.6L + 1.4x III extender for handheld flight shots. The 1DIV also autofocuses with the same combo but with only the center point). Image quality drop has never been noticeable when these lenses are used with extenders.
I'm not into videos. However, when I do feel like recording few casual clips, I use a tiny Sony HDR Handycam. It is tiny in size but much more powerful than DSLRs for recording videos.
Thank you for the video. It has been quite helpful.

Hmmm ... While I am a fan of the 90D, the latest (April 2023) newer bodies from Canon bring more value and more features to lower priced bodies. Thus, the video may be valid for its time, but the video may be outdated compared to Canon's more recent product line. And yes, Canon is milking us early on to finance the shift to mirrorless, and we must wait for features to trickle down to lower priced models, but it is, and will, happen. JR

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx Рік тому

The timing was in general not too good, the R7 was pretty much released not long after which is basically the mirrorless 90D with some more features. All i really miss on the R7 is proper, uncropped 4k60 but the 4k60 crop mode is a gamechanger for shorter lenses, for example the 18-150 gets something like a 50-440mm!
The R50 and R8 are just... well, the R50 is a RF mount M50 (i dont like it at all) and the R8 is what the RP should have been from the beginning, but in general its nice despite the missing IBIS and slow EFCS burst rate (and price outside the US, especially in EU). Since it is as the R6 II without a stacked sensor its at scenarios where the 40 fps electronic would make sense barely usable due to rolling shutter. At least my R7 shoots 15 fps EFCS (with other drawbacks...) and is affordable. rolling shutter isnt much worse than R6, R6 II etc.

I personally don't understand why anyone would go from the R5 to the 90D, or any full frame camera to a crop sensor for that matter. I had the 6D and traded it for the 90D, big mistake, as I might as well have dropped my fish-eye lenses in the bin for what use they were. After 6 months of the 90D I traded it in for a 6D Mk II, which is what I should have done in the first place but I was taken in by the good price I was offered for the 90D. Nothing could induce me to get another crop sensor camera. The 6D was superior to the 90D in low light without a doubt, the 6D Mk II even more so. In fact, I would say my old 500D was better than the 90D in low light. I don't use video, so 75% of the 90D is of no interest. I can now return to my first love of photography, abstracts, with my 6D Mk II.
Anyone thinking of getting a crop sensor camera should first actually use one for a while, then see if you still want one. They're not for me though, DSLR or mirrorless.
