I own a 90D and love the flip screen. I have shot in the rain and it just keeps a ticking, no worries there. The camera works well shooting wild life, you just got to experiment with the menu. The winner for me the 90D
The 90d is a bit more expensive to be fair at least used. Although if you can afford the extra few hundred go for it! 32mp with a great af system along with it being a newer body I believe is amazing.
This was a great video. Hard to find such a non-flashy, objectively based review video that really focus on REAL world pros/cons - and just not just pro/cons for youtubers/vloggers! Thank you very much.
Thank you very much for the comparison between these both cameras in terms of wild life photography. Concerning the autofocus issue of 90d (lost the Focus of bird) I want to comment that from technical point of view many Canon cameras like 1dxmii, 7dmii, 80d, 90d,... are using one and the same parameters in order to configure the autofocus performance. These parameters are so called "Tracking sensitivity", "Accel./Decel tracking" and "AF pt Auto switching". The SW algo using these parameters as input is in every camera the same, I guess. Only the hardware is different. As far as I know the autofocus HW module for the optical view finder of 90d is a new development derived from the one of 1dxmii. Thus, I wonder why the performance of 90d in terms of tracking birds shall be worse than 7dmii. For sure the 7dmii as well as the 1dxmii are capable to offer pre-configured autofocus settings in its menu so called case1...case6. Which allows to access different focus situations very quickly. But these pre-configurations do only use the three parameters mentioned above in different combinations. Thus, I recommend to configure the 90d in the same way as the 7dmii in order to compare the bird tracking capability. When I have a look to the pre-configurations, I would prefer to use case 2 for bird photography. The parameters are set as follows: "Tracking sensitivity = -1", "Accel./Decel tracking = 0" and "AF pt Auto switching = 0". I assume the Tracking sensitivity value is in this case the root cause for losing the focus in the 90d. Thus I recommend to change this value to minus one in the 90d CFn.II autofocus menu. Whereby “-1” means that the focus remains longer on the motif and doesn’t change to other items appearing in the image behind or in front of the original motif.
Hi Konny, thanks for watching my video. You are absolutely correct. You can finde adjust your AF functions in the green menu and really improve it drastically, however, that feature is a bit hidden away.
Bueno, eso quiere decir que el video de análisis no fue realmente "en profundidad". Quiero comprar una cámara para naturaleza y creo que antes ver videos, es mejor descargar los manuales. Saludos desde Perú.
Autofocus tracking sensitivity IS AVAILABLE on the 90D.. just not as a separate menu item but you can register the individual tracking items in the MY Menu. Also: Autofocus tracking for BIF is made better by disabling the Face and ITR (also in the setup menus). You didnt' mention any of this in your review.
Also annoying she said the 7D mkii wins for auto focus points because it beats the cross type viewfinder by 20 points, yet says nothing about the 5481 points available in live view along with the WAY more advanced iTR AF it has. You can customize the AF insanely on this camera, just doesn't have a designated page to do it. Everything's in the custom modes menu. I dunno, I appreciate reviews to get opinions of real world issues and comparisons but blindly reading off basic spec info from Best Buy's web page doesn't cut it.
A year ago I got a Canon 100-400 zoom and I almost bought a 90D as a second body for it (I already had an 80D). I came across this video and saw that the 7Dii autofocus was much better than 80/90D, so I bought a new 7Dii and grip instead at a very good price. I confirm that this video is spot on, the 7Dii blows the 80D into the weeds on quickly changing autofocus for birds. I also find the 7Dii much better in other ways; faster, quieter, better sealed, better exposition with and without flash, and the CF card is way faster copying off onto a PC than an SD card. Thanks again for the excellent advice!
This comparison video was ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING! I am a basketball photographer here in Japan and have been contemplating these two for some time. Thank you very much...and I’ve subscribed.
Hi, thanks so much for watching my video. Really really appreciate. We have been trying to get more new gear up here to the Chobe but were unfortunately stopped by all the quarantine. Stay safe!
90D *Autofocus Adjustment Functions* are in the Custom Functions :) regarding 4:22 Custom Functions II: Autofocus. *Tracking Sensitivity* (C.Fn II-1): Related to the AI Servo AF mode; this setting controls how much the autofocus system reacts when an object other than your subject enters the focusing area or when your subject strays from the focusing points. Accel./Decel. Tracking (C.Fn II-2): This one is also related to AI Servo AF mode; the default setting is designed for subjects moving at a fixed speed. The other settings are geared to subjects that are moving erratically. AF Point Auto Switching (C.Fn II-3): This sets the AF point switching sensitivity when tracking moving objects. In other words, you can control how responsive the system is when it needs to switch AF points. AI Servo 1st Image Priority (C.Fn II-4): When you use one of the Continuous Drive modes and AI Servo AF mode, this setting determines whether the camera takes the first shot as soon as the shutter button is pressed, even if focus is not yet achieved. You can tell the camera to wait for focusing to occur (choose the Focus Priority setting) or to go ahead and take the shot (choose Release Priority). The default, Equal Priority, tries to achieve a balance between the two. AI Servo 2nd Image Priority (C.Fn II-5): This function controls what happens for shots taken after the first shot when you’re using Continuous shooting and AI Servo AF mode. Choose Shooting Speed Priority to make achieving the maximum frames per second rate the priority; choose Focus Priority to restrict the camera to taking the shot after focus is achieved. The default setting gives equal priority to both concerns. Select AF Area Selection Mode (C.Fn II-7): By default, the 90D rotates through all five AF Area Selection Modes when you press the AF Area Selection Mode button when using the viewfinder. You can customize this by removing those you don’t want to see from this rotation. The only exeption (you knew there was going to be one!) is Manual Selection: 1-Point AF. It stays, whether you want to see it or not. Limit AF Methods (C.Fn II-8): Like the previous function, this setting limits the AF methods you can use, only when you are shooting in Live View. Orientation Linked AF Point (C.Fn II-10): Normally, the AF Area mode you select, as well as the AF point or zone you choose, remain in effect whether you orient the camera horizontally or vertically. If you change this setting to Select Separate AF Points, the camera remembers the settings you choose while holding the camera horizontally, vertically with the grip on top, and vertically with the grip on the bottom. Then when you rotate the camera, it automatically shifts to those settings. *Initial Servo AF* (C.Fn II-11): This option controls which AF point the AI Servo AF or Servo AF uses when the AF Area Selection mode is set to Automatic Selection AF for the viewfinder or the AF Method is set to Face+Tracking in Live View. By default, the system selects whichever AF point it thinks is best. However, you can change this behavior and pre-select an AF point to start on, whether preset or the last one you used. AF Point Selection Movement (C.Fn II-13): By default, when you’re selecting an autofocus point, you hit a wall when you reach the edge of the grid of autofocus points. If you change this menu option to Continuous, the selection instead wraps around the viewfinder by jumping to the point on the opposite side. This function applies to viewfinder shooting only.
Very informative and real world review....scoring made sense without discouraging either model...just a very neat and well presented review... thank you....looking forward to watching more reviews....live in the Rockies and looking forward to some nice nature shots this spring. I must say, with all due respect, you are an absolute pleasure to look at.
upgraded my set up from a t5 to a used 7d mkii recently and I have to say that I am blown away that a camera that old is so fast and reliable. From my experience buying a used 7d mkii for a budget nature photography setup if you can find them in good condition for cheap enough is a great option.
I too "upgraded" to a 7D mk II recently and the sharp focus is really amazing! I tend to do a lot of bird photography, and the 7D mk II has not disappointed!!!!!
Great review. I've been thinking of upgrading my 7D mark 1. I do a lot of dog photography so AI servo is absolutely vital for me. 7DII seems a much better option for my usage. Cheaper too!
Hi Neil, thanks so much for your feedback. If you shoot the dogs mostly in good light conditions I would go with the 7Dii as it has adopted the focus of the former 1Dxi. It is fantastic. However, if you do struggle with light conditions you will not be happy to shoot the 7Dii with much more than ISO2000/2500
Janine, first off, your AMAZING at helping teach me good photo tips and tricks and instructional videos on my wildlife shooting. I only wish I could afford one of your Pangolin photo safaris!!! Keep up the amazing job!
I am a Nikon shooter,. but this review is very helpful for me as well.I think we all have our own favorites in cameras and lenses, each of us is an individual who prefers a different type of photography .So there is always something for everyone. As long as you are happy :). We also have dreams of buying a better gear, but not always we can simply afford. But I tried to make the best of whatever I have , I need to appreciate.Thank you very much Janine for your great review on both cameras in such a spectacular garden.Very helpful and useful.
Hi Margaret, thanks so much for watching my review and I am glad it helped. Even if we cannot afford certain gear (I am facing the same problem often)... it helps to understand the potential and limitations of our own cameras. That being said: there has been some great deals out there for the 7Dii since the 90D came out.
Hi Pogi, you must enjoy it fully. A little note on the side that I hadn't mentioned in the video. You can finde adjust your AF functions in the green menu and really improve it drastically. Enjoy playing with it
Some corrections out of my experience: 1. the 90D does have a comprehensive autofucus menu, with all of the options she claimed were missing and more! 2. The tracking of the optical view in the 90D is superior to the live view's one, at least for wildlife photography, as it's faster 3.the high pixels density of the 90D requires the use of high revolving lenses (100-400 ii is a great choice) and higher than usual shutter speed- once these two are utilized the result would be far superior to the 7d ii I appreciate the time spent on making this video and do consider it's release date which was close to the 90D release but the 90D is a far superior camera to the 7D mark ii, not even mentioning its video capabilities which are fantastic!
Hi Michael, thanks for watching my video. It is a fantastic camera!!! A little note on the side that I hadn't mentioned in the video. You can fine adjust your AF functions in the green menu and really improve it drastically. Enjoy playing with it and stay safe...
@@janinekrayer2499 Thanks for saying that because I have the 90D and one can fine tune this camera just like the 7D. Sensor in 90D is also bigger, newer, and they both have the dual focus system. I vote 90D.
Hi Janine, THX for your vid. On 3 July 2020, I order a Canon 90 D. So far so good. Then I read your chapter about 90d vs 7dii. On 18 July 2020, I order a NEW Canon 7 D ii. Now I must learn a lot, but the menus are simple. I learn also from UA-cam, and I net. My last CANON was a Canon FTb, that was in 1972. After that, I use LUMIX and NIKON and LEICA. The sound from the Mirror makes me Happy again! Still, I look to the NEW Canon R 5 and the new lenses 600- and 800- mm. Cheers, Frits from Thailand *_* [65-year friendship with the Shutter]
Very fair review - so difficult to compare what are virtually home computers for photography in 5 points and I have no problem with the conclusions. I would like to add however, that in addition to 4k video, blue-tooth compatibility and various other modern additions, the 90D includes focus bracketing software. For quality images I tend to use my 5D mIV (wonderful camera) but I got the 90 D for versatility and reduced weight in the field. The focus bracketing works with my Canon macro lens, my 100-400mm and the 24-105 mm lenses. So focus bracketing can have the widest possible application.
Thank you Janine Krayer, we purchased a new 7D mk11 (G) because of your review and we love it, it is a classic camera, (the Mercedes Benz of Crop Cameras), we know all about how great new "mirror-less" cameras are but there is something special about these older cameras,
Thank you very much for the video. Very appreciated. I would only mention that even 90D has the option to tune the autofocus in regarss tracking sensitivity and stickyness, but it's hidden in the custom functions, C.Fn II :Autofocus. Well, I know 7DII's more customizable and better, but 90D has some degree of customization too.
Sorry that you missed that the 90 d has allmost the same degree of customization of the autofocus. You can easily change the tracking sensitivity for exampel..so it would be interesting to see a new test of the autofocus
The 90D is much harder to customize than any of the higher end bodies so much so that one is less likely to do it, especially in the field. How easy something is to do in the menu is a big deal, which is the reason I avoid Sony cameras.
G L - given that the 90D is missing AF options like 4 and 8-point expansion, and no easy way to change between AF modes on the fly, during action, the 90D is just not equipped to do what the 7D2, and all higher end Canon bodies, do. It is not just a matter of tracking since once you lose the subject, it is unlikely that you will get it back if it is a fast moving bird or other animal. That is why the higher end bodies have those additional feature which are not in the 90D. It is meant for a different type of shooter, and it’s price reflects this.
I clicked on this video mostly because it is Janine. Such an elegant beauty 😮😍. I'll stop typing now so I can concentrate on enjoying the eye candy.......
I loved the video and comparison between 7Dii and 90D. Started out with a 400D, then 7D and now the 7Dii. It is a great camera only let down by the AA filter which does effect IQ. I wish canon would do a firmware update to squeeze more performance outfit the hardware, or offer some internal hardware upgrade. As the 7Dii still has a very large owner following who have not, and probably will not upgrade to a newer body.
Thank you for your info. As a 7DII user since it came out many years ago, I was curious how the 90D would compare. Given that I rented one and shot with it Feb 5 - 12th in Sanibel, Florida. I agree with virtually all your thoughts. Some add'l insights are: * 90D doesn't have a dual back button focus. Dual Back Button is important to me depending on BIF or still shot * 90D with 1.4TC and 100-400 II Image quality outperformed the 7DII with the same lens configuration * 90D AF initially for BIF in Flight was "very bad". After making multiple AF adjustments the AF system went from "very bad" to almost good enough In conclusion, for me, if there was a 7DIII with flip screen, Touch screen, Dual Back Button, 32MB sensor, and most of all equal or better than 7D II AF system I would consider buying. But for now, I can't justify the 90D
Hi Ken. Thanks for your very useful comments re 7DII vs 90D. I want to upgrade from my 450D and I do Sports, Aviation and Birds, so focus tracking is really important for me. As I don't forsee Canon doing a 7DIII I have a choice to make - get a 7DII or 90D? Jury is split 7DII with great focus tracking , weather sealed or 90D with its updated processing and features? Jury is still undecided..
Hi Ken, thanks so much for watching my video. I can only agree with all your added insights. I would suggest to just weight a few more weeks. The big step from Canon has been announced. No more professional DSLRs will be released. I am dying to get my fingers on the new mirrorless cameras
@@mroc48 it’s a gut feeling that Canon won’t release anything like the 7D series in a mirrorless format, instead they want you to go full frame. Instead I feel they will offer a 90D equivalent in mirrorless.
Very nice real world review, it's great to hear from people who really use them so make real comments. I have the 80D and the weight and bulk is a real benefit for climbing / hiking - where you need a 400 5.6, 70-200 2.8 and a wide zoom with you and you don't want a big bag! My wife has the 760D and this is too small for me -I have no idea how I'd manage with a small mirrorless, especially with a 400 / 500mm lens - the 760D is ok with 400 but to small for 500. Mirrorless battery life is also a concern for me and the real viewfinder is great - tried EVF for 2 days and din't get a feel for it. However you have a more "pro" viewpoint and it's clear the 7D has big advantages, the weight is the only issue. I'm rarely above iso 1600, but the 80D is ok up to 3600, above is never so nice. A great review which got me listenning and thinking - more please - the best out there!
Hi Andrew, thanks so much for watching my video. I believe the new mirrorless are ergonomically quite nicely build. After Canon's recent announcement I cannot wait to test them! They have been watching everyone else pave the way so I am expecting a big bang
Had the chance of handling a friend's 90D and discovered that there is a Autofocus chapter in the menu of 90D as well, similar to those of 7D ii or 5D iv. I don’t know if It's exactly same as those of single digit cameras', but fine tuning of AF tracking sensitivity /responsiveness, acceleration/deceleration etc are available in 90D as well.
Great video, and what a beautiful spot for photos!! Great comparison, thank you for uploading, it was good to hear about the buffer etc. I recently found out that tracking sensitivity on 90D can be adjusted in customer controls. Canon has a live chat now and they can guide through the camera settings if required.
@@LeonKotze70 I got my 7D Mark II and I love it. Friend of mine got the 90D. It's also a really good Camera, but still I think the 7D Mark II is a little bit better
@@Unclehonest the 90D might be a more "modern" camera with better tech etc, but many lenses just don't work with it, that alone is a huge disadvantage. Secondly, the AF through the OVF is not that easy to master and to get consistent results. It however has its advantages also.
Well, there are detailed settings for the AF system in Custom Function II. I wish reviewers spent some time to get to know the equipment before the review.
Many thanks for review! I am "wildlife" heavy trucks photographer in automotive magazine, and have used 7d more than 12 years day by day with only one repair. So, now i have choosen 7d mark ll, cause often im working in really tough weather conditions like rain, snow, dirty roads etc. And l need to have very fast camera, to make shots like running through the snow. So, my choice in 2022 is 7d mark ll
In Wildlife photography, I see my future not just for hobby but in this I want to take a lens so that I can start with that lens by taking the best picture.
first of all this is hands down the best comparison video on here, ive owned my 7dmkii for around 4 years now and its took an absolute beating and its still going strong to this day. i also use a battery grip on mine so i get the extra shots without having to mess around swapping them out
She had the same mindset with mine. I prefer 90D is because of the image quality and IS in videos. But as for tracking and brust mode. 7Dii stands out because of the CF card. In terms for wildlife, i will prefer the 7Dii, however if you want a camera with general purpose 90D is better.
I have owner both the 7D and the 7dMK2. Hands down the mk2 is the best I’ve owned. Performance overall is top notch. Started with the early digital rebel 20d, 5d mk1,40d, 7D and now the mk2. Favorite lens 135 f2 and 100-400mm mk1. Had the 85mm f1.2 but sold it as it wasn’t being used much. Cheers
Having shot both, I recently choose the 90D for the better overall image quality & High ISO capabilities when shooting larger animals. Use my 1Dx Mark II or 5D Mark IV for birds in flight.
Nice review, I was curious about the 90D’s performance in comparison to the 7D Mk2. I have owned a 7D MK2 since it was first released and it has been a great camera for me. I mainly bought it for photographing birds in flight. I also found that the 7D Mk2 could perform a little better in low light, but for the most part the camera has not disappointed me. Thanks for taking to the time to show us a comparison between the two cameras! :-)
HI Steve, thanks so much for watching my review. Yes the 7Dii was the first camera to adopt the amazing 1Dxi focusing system and it really hit the spot. But one needs optimal light conditions to shoot with it... depending where you take pictures that can either work or become very difficult.
@Steve Glennan If the 90D AF was setup properly (there's 16 AF custom functions which dramatically change AF performance and they weren't even given a mention) and the user was more familiar with it, the difference between the cameras would be significantly less. As a person who used to shoot weddings, portraits and model portfolio work (i.e. Not a bird or wildlife photographer) I shoot birds in flight for AF practice. On a lowly 80D I rarely miss a shot. The demonstration in this video does not represent the 90D used by a person who knows the camera, how it behaves and how to set it up.
Just got my Mk II today, after trading in my beloved 7D. Really looking forward to putting it through its paces. The first lens I put on it was my 24-105.
@@amardaman3371 It's a fantastic pairing! The 24-105 has become my favorite, go-to lens, and it works beautifully with my 7D Mk II, as well as my 1DX Mk III. It's also been great on my new R6 Mk II, using the EF > RF adapter. Just an all-around excellent and versatile lens.
Great video. I used to shoot with the 7Dii but felt really restricted by the limitations on using high ISO. I didn't like pushing the 7Dii above ISO1000. It was for that reason I actually moved to the 5Div which as a full frame gives me a much better ISO performance and I don't feel I have lost the reach from the cropped sensor.
There’s an important difference between the two cameras and although it’s not relevant in every scenario, it may make a difference in the final output, that’s metering accuracy. I’ve tested both cameras and noticed that 7DMKII prevents blown out highlights in contrasting backgrounds better than 90D. If there’s a white or bright object in the scene, and you’re using the optical viewfinder, it’s more than likely that it will be blown out by the 90D, it only happens in rare occasions when shooting with the 7D MKII under the same conditions.
Good review. A minor misinformation around 12:30 that Canon single digits cameras do not have flip screens. In reality Canon 6D Mark II has a flip vari-angle screen.
What a super comparison video, straight to the point on both cameras and makes me happy I bought the 7D Mark II. I also like knowing the 7D has built in GPS, Intervalometer, and decent enough ISO performance. Yet the 90D sounds strong in many other areas, especially the flip screen ( had one on my Canon G3 a century ago ) and they are very nice for composition. Hard to decide best.
Hi, thanks for watching my video. That depends what you need it for. When you shoot a lot of birds in flight than the focus is more important. Also, higher pixel numbers can be an issue when photographing fast moving subjects. Check it out...
Thanks for the review. Well done. Very well grounded in practical, real-world use considerations. You identify, better than others, an issue with the 90D’s focus servo abilities that others have also mentioned. For me, wanting the 90D to be an action/birding camera, i’m left thinking, “Dang, everything but THE ONE most important capability!”
Hi Craig, thanks so much for watching my video. Yes, I was also a bit disappointed with the focus abilities. However, I believe that Canon is long overdue with a beautiful 7Diii. I am pretty sure they might come up with a solution soon! As it is a single digit camera it will probably be a more expensive solution but at the end we must consider the R&D that goes with these cameras. Consumers always want sharper, faster, better and it needs to come from somewhere. It is quite amazing how fast the camera world has developed the last decade and I cannot wait to see what the next two years have ready for us. The world is leaning towards mirrorless.... there is technical restrictions that a DSLR camera cannot overcome and I find the new mirroless lenses of Canon are out of this world. Right now I am sticking tight with my 1Dxii but lets see what there is to come....
Janine Krayer Janine, thanks for your reply and additional thoughts. I hope you are right about there being some better camera options in the wings. Hope springs eternal! ;-)
Getting ready to upgrade from my Canon Rebel T5 i and I was considering the 7D MK ii. Mainly because the lenses I own and have been using are compatible and it will save me from having to purchase new lenses. I use my camera for multiple purposes such as outdoor sporting events, indoor concerts, weddings, nature, and wildlife.
I recently picked up a 7D Mark ii and it is a solid performer. If you don't think you will need the flip out screen or are not pining for 4K video then it is a strong performer. I think it will feel much more robust and flexible and a much better performer for sports and wildlife than the T5i.
My T5i is a real workhorse. Been shooting with it since 2015. Of course there are better cameras but the lenses are the heart of the image as much as a persons eye. I think I’m going to purchase the 90D. Enough of an upgrade for me.
@@machia0705 I ended up getting a 90D also. I think the 7D Mark II is still a great camera for this kind of wildlife or sport photography usage. However I too had been used to a T3i and so the flip out screen and eventually my desire for 4K became a motivation. If going mirrorless is still a ways off and you've invested in EF(-S) lenses then yes I think the 90D might be the one.
Hi there, Nice review however i have a small remark. 😊 You are off in the comparison in regards to the AF. The 90D’s AF is way better. It’s true in the 7DM2 is a separate AF menu. But each and every setting can be made also in the 90D. There is no menu with cases. But one can create easy a customised AF menu in the green section with exact the same as in the 7DMII. The technical details of the AF for the 90D are way better😏 btw i own both bodies.
Hi Boschtra, thanks for watching my video. Yes you are right as you can fine adjust your AF functions in the green menu and really improve it drastically. However, it doesn't match the 7Dmkii remotely in my eyes.
Great review. I've been using the 7Dmkii for 5 years, have travelled the world with it and still love using it today. Just ordered a Tamron 150-600mm G2 as I'm really getting into wildlife photography. Wish they'd do a 7Dmkiii as I like the professional camera but don't want to go full frame.
@@fatihyasinsonduren I don't care about autofocus I used all AF but Canon 90D it's has funcion RAW Images processing. What do you mean RAW files photos you can converted to JPEG on the yours cameras I like this this funcion becouse it's very comfortable👌 Canon 7D MK II dosn't have that.
I guess that she just didn't know the correct place in the menu for those settings in 90D. Strange thing with Canon is that in different models same settings can be located in totally different menu location. I upgraded my 80D to 90D, and even between those two models some settings have been relocated. Very confusing. Took some time to find the setting to enable AF-overdrive for my STM lenses. For a moment I thought that my 90D was broken / had FW bug. 7D Mk II has more focusing points, no question about it. But also 90D seems to work quite nicely when focusing on targets. Specially AF in LiveView is like a dream. Big step forward vs 80D I say. All in all, these photo tutorial videos from pangolin are cute, me like a lot!
Fantastic review. I was intending to trade in the 7D II on a 90D because of articulated screen and video, but after looking at that AF tracking, I will keep the 7D II and get the 90D as an additional camera. Thank you.
Thank you, great review ! I have been looking at the 90 D but its less rugged body is my main reason to hesitate. The better noise level at 6400 ISO is a definite plus and also the flip out screen, I think Canons main reason for not incorporate it in its "single figure models" is that its much easiier to break or damage that compared to the solid screens. I have the 70 D since many years, think I bought it 2013 when my old 7D mk 1 broke down and its ok but then when 7D mk2 came out that was soo much better, I still use that mostly for wildlife/ nature photography in northern Sweden ´(Lapland). That great noise at 6400 Iso is my reason to still consider 90 D seriously. so thanks for showing that so clear. Still hoping for a 7D MK 3... Bo Nilsson Sweden
Hi Bo, thanks so much for watching my video. The new Canon announcement has been very exciting. We will see a replacement for the 7Dmkiii but definitely not a DSLR anymore. We were supposed to test the new gear now in April, however, in the current situations it has sadly been postponed. Despite my reluctance with mirrorless I believe the lenses are absolutely outstanding and the image quality often improved due to the shorter distance between the lens mount and the sensor. Excited for the new stuff!!!... Stay safe
Love my 7D2 paired with a Sigma 150-600 for wildlife. Such a beast setup at a reasonable cost without spending too much for a far reach setup. Works great for airplanes and airshows also. I will likely never get rid of my 7D2 even if it is long in the tooth. Its a great camera and still relevant.
great review, thanks for sharing! and that beautiful location!! As a 80D owner, and someone who isnt a fan of the 7D series (mostly because of its bulk), I think i keep trying to find reviews that really show the AF performance from both 7DII and 90D (as someone mentioned, the AF setting can be fine tuned in the menu of 80/90D). Even if the 7Dii was a more manageable size, I'd have a tough time giving up the newer technologies and updates that the 90D has (sensor, flip screen, wifi!, video) at the same price point. As I'm sure there's a lot of other photographers in the same boat, maybe as a followup video, it'd be nice if you could fine tune the settings the best you can for the 90D (specifically for bird photography) and share results. Thanks again for sharing!!
Hi Andrew, thanks so much for the feedback. I will definitely consider this. Unfortunately there is no option to rent camera gear in Botswana but I will see what I can do when I get down South again soon. However, if you do shoot birds in flight the 90D is not going to be fast enough. Maybe wait until the Photokina (may) this year and see what Canon might come out with. A 7Diii is long overdue and I think there might be interesting options coming up that will be fitting into future development of cameras and your range of interest.
Thanks a lot for the video you shared about back focusing. You really helped me a lot and now I realise that I missed a lot of shots because I was doing it wrong all the time.
Thanks so much for this great review. I have a 7Dii which I absolutely adore but I was thinking of getting another newer camera to increase my range. I was looking at the 90D as a possibility so your review was well-timed. I’ll stick to my 7Dii as it suits me and I don’t think the 90D would meet my requirements
Hi Anne, I believe the 90D would be too similar to the 7Dii to increase your range. I would recommend a full frame camera maybe. Check out the new mirrorless cameras... they have had some fantastic reviews
Great contribution, after the failure with the Eos RP on moving objects I decided on the 90D together with the Sigma lenses 18-35 (Landscape, Street) 150-600Contemporary with 1.4 teleconverter and the 70-200 Sport with 2-fold teleconverter, let's see if I can get the 7DMKII as a used body at a good price she can then move in, Greetings from Germany, Markus
Wow, you must be strong seeing how you're handling those bulky cameras with ease. I was struggling with the tiny Sony A6400 while shooting for a couple of hours.
Really helpful. I bought a 90D, thinking I am not a pro and mainly wanted more "cropability". But I have been hearing the 7D mark II is better for moving birds. For still birds, I am pleased with the 90D, and figure with practice, and maybe a better lens one day, I can get get good enough shots for a hobby shooter.
Excellent video.very good comparison between the 2 cameras. keep it up. i have subscribed to your channel. thanks a lot BTW i have using a 7d MKII for the last 5 years. love it
Hi Jeanine. I have been debating on whether I should buy the 70-200 iii. Or the 70-200 II. But been also looking at the 100-400mm II and or the 150-600mm sigma. I will be using on the canon 90d. I want you to help me decide or narrow it down. Since the 90d it’s a bit picky because of the 32.5 mg pixel. Sorry it’s a big question. If you already have those comparisons let me know so I can check it out. Thank you 🙏 for all the wisdom you have shared with us all so far.
Hi Malinois, that really depends on what you want to be photographing. the 70-200mm will mostly come short when you want to shoot birds or wildlife... the 100-400mm or the 150-600mm will be better suited for that... However, if you mostly shoot in low light conditions with closer subjects the 70-200 F2.8 is brilliant and one of the sharpest lenses I know - cheers Janine
What is your “dream” camera body and lens combo for wildlife photography? Let us know in the comments below...
Dream? Probably an A9ii with a 600mm F4 but realistically a 200 2.8 for my G9
@@JoeMaranophotography that would be a great combo... but you will definitely need a shorter zoom lens with that 600mm fix.
@@janinekrayer2499 Most of my shots are at the long end of my Panasonic Leica 100-400 so that's 800mm reach :)
A 90d with the 7D ii focus system :-)
@Russell Wood Pants. It's DSLR and dead tech. It can do wildlife and pretty much just that at an insane price.
I own a 90D and love the flip screen. I have shot in the rain and it just keeps a ticking, no worries there. The camera works well shooting wild life, you just got to experiment with the menu. The winner for me the 90D
these people also keep forgetting to account its price as well
90D 👎....foco melhora utilizando apenas obturador eletrônico!
The 90d is a bit more expensive to be fair at least used. Although if you can afford the extra few hundred go for it! 32mp with a great af system along with it being a newer body I believe is amazing.
I sold my 90D and purchased the 7D MK II and now I am much happier. Focus nailed every time.
90D só melhora o foco um pouco utilizando obturador eletrônico!
I could listen to you talk all day. So intelligent and articulate. Wonderful review, Janine.
Thanks Konny for the useful tip
Thank you so much.
Yes, she missed this point
90d works like 7d mark 2? i mean autofocus
Chaim is correct.
The 90D does NOT have a 50mp sensor its 32MP a mistake on the review also.
Stay safe!
90D *Autofocus Adjustment Functions* are in the Custom Functions :) regarding 4:22
Custom Functions II: Autofocus.
Thank you!
Thanks for this detailed information on 90D's AF!!
Thanks for this - ive just bought a 90D.
Very informative and real world review....scoring made sense without discouraging either model...just a very neat and well presented review... thank you....looking forward to watching more reviews....live in the Rockies and looking forward to some nice nature shots this spring. I must say, with all due respect, you are an absolute pleasure to look at.
Hi John, thanks so much.. we have been in lock down for so long that we struggle to get gear in unfortunately
A real "real world review" by someone who is wildlife photography! Good work! You should try the M6 Mk II too!
yes, but it lacks the weather and dust proofness, so I think it would not really be suitable for wildlife / safaris.
upgraded my set up from a t5 to a used 7d mkii recently and I have to say that I am blown away that a camera that old is so fast and reliable.
Just bought a used one. Gonna get a used EF 400mm f/5.6 with it.
@@birbs4life174 I’m struggling trying to find ones in good condition with low shutter counts. Where did u find yours?
@@cbgnet, off eBay. I got lucky; the one I received had a shutter count of 1,000.
I wish Canon would release a 7D mkIII (I just love how indestructible the 7D cameras are)... But nowadays it's all about mirrorless.
Roberto Prestigiacomo i wish bro, with photo burst 15 fps,
they did mention it in the rumors, however, they launched 90D instead.
Boo mirrorless!
well there’s a rumoured aps-c RF mount camera coming called R7 that looks to be an awesome mirrorless 7D replacement
Noel Chignell yes a mirrorless 7D replacement would be even better 👌
Great review. I've been thinking of upgrading my 7D mark 1. I do a lot of dog photography so AI servo is absolutely vital for me. 7DII seems a much better option for my usage. Cheaper too!
Hi Neil, thanks so much for your feedback. If you shoot the dogs mostly in good light conditions I would go with the 7Dii as it has adopted the focus of the former 1Dxi. It is fantastic. However, if you do struggle with light conditions you will not be happy to shoot the 7Dii with much more than ISO2000/2500
Outstanding honest comparison, thanks a lot!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for the positive feedback Margaret. The great thing about photography is that there is 'something for everyone'. 😀
Thanks, very informative. I just bought the 90D today and arriving tomorrow and so excited...
Hi Pogi, you must enjoy it fully. A little note on the side that I hadn't mentioned in the video. You can finde adjust your AF functions in the green menu and really improve it drastically. Enjoy playing with it
Some corrections out of my experience:
1. the 90D does have a comprehensive autofucus menu, with all of the options she claimed were missing and more!
2. The tracking of the optical view in the 90D is superior to the live view's one, at least for wildlife photography, as it's faster
3.the high pixels density of the 90D requires the use of high revolving lenses (100-400 ii is a great choice) and higher than usual shutter speed- once these two are utilized the result would be far superior to the 7d ii
I appreciate the time spent on making this video and do consider it's release date which was close to the 90D release but the 90D is a far superior camera to the 7D mark ii, not even mentioning its video capabilities which are fantastic!
I own the 90D, and it is an impressive piece of equipment, and for me, it is my go to camera.
Hi Michael, thanks for watching my video. It is a fantastic camera!!! A little note on the side that I hadn't mentioned in the video. You can fine adjust your AF functions in the green menu and really improve it drastically. Enjoy playing with it and stay safe...

Hi Janine,
THX for your vid.

Great combo of primary and secondary bodies you have there!
@@PangolinWildlife yes, very lucky :)

Thank you Janine Krayer, we purchased a new 7D mk11 (G) because of your review and we love it, it is a classic camera, (the Mercedes Benz of Crop Cameras), we know all about how great new "mirror-less" cameras are but there is something special about these older cameras,
Great to hear! Thank you.
Great tip, thank you RennsportDoc. We appreciate you taking the time to share.
Sorry that you missed that the 90 d has allmost the same degree of customization of the autofocus. You can easily change the tracking sensitivity for exampel..so it would be interesting to see a new test of the autofocus
Michael the maven has a video where he shows the best setup for the autofocus. Turn off facedetection when mot shooting people
The 90D is much harder to customize than any of the higher end bodies so much so that one is less likely to do it, especially in the field.
Do you realize how creepy you sound?
Excellent review. Thank you...
Glad it was helpful!- cheers Janine
Some add'l insights are:
* 90D doesn't have a dual back button focus. Dual Back Button is important to me depending on BIF or still shot
* 90D with 1.4TC and 100-400 II Image quality outperformed the 7DII with the same lens configuration
* 90D AF initially for BIF in Flight was "very bad". After making multiple AF adjustments the AF system went from "very bad" to almost good enough
In conclusion, for me, if there was a 7DIII with flip screen, Touch screen, Dual Back Button, 32MB sensor, and most of all equal or better than 7D II AF system I would consider buying.
Yes it's just not in a dedicated menu
As well as the 80D.
Excellent comparo, thank you Janine.
Great comparison! This question still comes up a lot for people for Canon action shooters.
Great video, and what a beautiful spot for photos!! Great comparison, thank you for uploading, it was good to hear about the buffer etc. I recently found out that tracking sensitivity on 90D can be adjusted in customer controls. Canon has a live chat now and they can guide through the camera settings if required.

I wish reviewers spent some time to get to know the equipment before the review.

really amazing review.... we were in the market for a camera and this review really did make it easier for us 😊
In Wildlife photography, I see my future not just for hobby but in this I want to take a lens so that I can start with that lens by taking the best picture.
Yes, a good lens is very important
first of all this is hands down the best comparison video on here, ive owned my 7dmkii for around 4 years now and its took an absolute beating and its still going strong to this day. i also use a battery grip on mine so i get the extra shots without having to mess around swapping them out
She had the same mindset with mine.
Cheers
Its a very good camera body!
Helpful and honest review thanks
Having shot both, I recently choose the 90D for the better overall image quality & High ISO capabilities when shooting larger animals. Use my 1Dx Mark II or 5D Mark IV for birds in flight.
Hi Mike, the 1Dxii is obviously in a different league ... same with the 5DIV ... I would probably not go back to the 90 D then.

One of the best for wildlife and BIRDS IN FLIGHT. ( which is a rare review)
Hi Michael, thanks so much for watching my video. I really appreciate that!
Nice to know for all our bird photographers out there. Thank you for the positive feedback Steve
How you getting on with the camera and 24-105 combo
@@amardaman3371 It's a fantastic pairing! The 24-105 has become my favorite, go-to lens, and it works beautifully with my 7D Mk II, as well as my 1DX Mk III. It's also been great on my new R6 Mk II, using the EF > RF adapter. Just an all-around excellent and versatile lens.
@@adude394 brilliant. I use it with my 80d. Mines f4
Great review and images, love from Bangladesh
Thanks so much for your feedback AH Monon! I really appreciate!
Hi, yes, you can definitely not compare it to a full frame camera. The 5Dvi is a really fine piece of work!!!
There’s an important difference between the two cameras and although it’s not relevant in every scenario, it may make a difference in the final output, that’s metering accuracy. I’ve tested both cameras and noticed that 7DMKII prevents blown out highlights in contrasting backgrounds better than 90D. If there’s a white or bright object in the scene, and you’re using the optical viewfinder, it’s more than likely that it will be blown out by the 90D, it only happens in rare occasions when shooting with the 7D MKII under the same conditions.
great review (it gets my goat when i miss the focus on birds in flight too)!
Good review. A minor misinformation around 12:30 that Canon single digits cameras do not have flip screens. In reality Canon 6D Mark II has a flip vari-angle screen.
Hi, thanks for the info! That is great to know
What a super comparison video, straight to the point on both cameras and makes me happy I bought the 7D Mark II. I also like knowing the 7D has built in GPS, Intervalometer, and decent enough ISO performance. Yet the 90D sounds strong in many other areas, especially the flip screen ( had one on my Canon G3 a century ago ) and they are very nice for composition. Hard to decide best.
Your reviews help me make good purchase decisions.
Very nice review, thank you
Good video, but the most important thing is the image quality so the the 90d is better, also 30mpx is superior, you can crop more
Hi, thanks for watching my video. That depends what you need it for. When you shoot a lot of birds in flight than the focus is more important. Also, higher pixel numbers can be an issue when photographing fast moving subjects. Check it out...
Would you prefer an out-of-focus picture that has better image quality or an in-focus photo with slightly less image quality?
A very good review of both cameras.
Hope springs eternal! ;-)
@@craigcarlson4022 In live view, 90D is absolutely destroying the 7D with autofocus tho. I can tell that from experience.
Perfect ! many thanks of comparison
Very useful review for me. Thanks 😊
Hi Fahad, thanks so much for watching my video. I really appreciate
Hi there,
Nice review however i have a small remark. 😊
You are off in the comparison in regards to the AF. The 90D’s AF is way better. It’s true in the 7DM2 is a separate AF menu. But each and every setting can be made also in the 90D.
There is no menu with cases. But one can create easy a customised AF menu in the green section with exact the same as in the 7DMII.
The technical details of the AF for the 90D are way better😏
btw i own both bodies.
Dude 7d mark ii got a way better af system...
Hi Boschtra, thanks for watching my video. Yes you are right as you can fine adjust your AF functions in the green menu and really improve it drastically. However, it doesn't match the 7Dmkii remotely in my eyes.
Janine Krayer also notice that in the orange menu you need to turn off (disable) itr faca recognising for the 90D af shooting wildlife 🤔
Ramon Bentim that’s only for the unknown 😜
Well described comparison. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great photography learning 90D
Thanks :)
I love my 90D❤
how is autofocus are you enjyor from autofocus?
@@fatihyasinsonduren I don't care about autofocus I used all AF but Canon 90D it's has funcion RAW Images processing. What do you mean RAW files photos you can converted to JPEG on the yours cameras I like this this funcion becouse it's very comfortable👌 Canon 7D MK II dosn't have that.
The 90D has the capacity for 'stickiness'. Perhaps this was added with a recent update to the camera?
Thank you.
hello bro
Nice explanation , love it. From Ethiopia !
Glad you like it.
Its a great camera and still relevant.
great review thanks so much
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great comparison!
My pleasure!
great review, thanks for sharing! and that beautiful location!!
Canon recommends case 1,3 for birds in flight. You can adapt those settings in a customised menu.
@@janinekrayer2499 chat to Grant Atkinson who has had quite a lot of experience with the 90D and could surely assist with the settings
I really enjoyed watching, what a cool spot to take photos
Thanks a lot! Kirstenbosch is stunning that time of year (Nov).
@@PangolinWildlife I’ll have to go there one day in the future looks like a beautiful place to walk around.
Thanks a lot for the video you shared about back focusing. You really helped me a lot and now I realise that I missed a lot of shots because I was doing it wrong all the time.
Great revue. You covered all the bases.
Thank you so much Cheryl.
Hey Cheryl, thanks so much for watching my video. Glad it gives you a good overview!
I mainly shoot video with my 90D. Works beautifully.
Great contribution, after the failure with the Eos RP on moving objects
I decided on the 90D together with the Sigma lenses 18-35 (Landscape, Street) 150-600Contemporary with 1.4 teleconverter and the 70-200 Sport with 2-fold teleconverter, let's see if I can get the 7DMKII as a used body at a good price she can then move in, Greetings from Germany, Markus
Wow, you must be strong seeing how you're handling those bulky cameras with ease. I was struggling with the tiny Sony A6400 while shooting for a couple of hours.
Hi Pravin, thanks so much for watching my video. I live in the bush so it is my workout :)
Re the tilt screen the Canon 6Dmk2 has this and is full frame. Great video and stunning scenery.
Thanks for the info!
