  • Skullz reacts to Invincible by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

Caligula is not Julius Caesar. Caligula was an emperor of Rome who was known for his hedonism and outright insanity. He opened a brothel in his palace, and had people work it who were questionable even for his time. And there are tales of him ordering soldiers down to the beach to stab the ocean and take seashells as war trophies because he was mad at Neptune.
Ponce de Leon is a Spanish explorer often credited for searching for the Fountain of Youth at one point in his journeys. Whether such a thing was something he really did or not, you can see how that kind of story would fit into this song about a man trying to hang on to his youth and glory.

Caligula means, "little nail" in Latin I believe. I read he (Caligula) got the nickname because he was a child when he started hanging out with the Roman soldiers. But it's definitely a reference to the band's debauchery over the decades.

Bold suggestion here....but once you've finished reacting to this album, find the time to sit down and listen to it as a whole. On your own, front to back, Fear Inoculum to 7empest....without feeling any need to react to it. Just experience the flow they're creating as a single composition.
As a matter of fact, I suggest this with all of their albums. Thanks again for riding the spiral with us, Skullz.

The “tears in my eyes” section at the end is straight up one of the best written verses in music ever. So filled with hope he could taste mythical fountains, after the Ponce de Leon fountain of youth reference is just so brilliantly worded. And yeah this song hits different when you know what to expect and you’re in a kind of mood to relax to this track. Once you know the vibe of each song without expecting something, each track gets better on this album. Can’t wait for the next three weeks! Also, recommend doing chocolate chip trip in same video as 7empest

This song for me is a grower. I liked it originally just fine, but each time I listen to it it sinks it’s teeth in a bit deeper. It resonates more…. Of course I am old and stubborn so maybe it took a bit for me to realize the story I was supposed to experience…
I was young and could do anything. I aged and things got complicated. Those complications of life wore me down. And beat me. And beat me. That’s the middle section to me. And they kept beating me.
And that’s fine. I am not just what I am now, I am also what I was before.
And what I have yet to become. Do I succumb to the beating of time, or do I pick the shield up an fight again?
I may not be able to physically do what 20 year old me could. But the effects of time on the body are not everything. I could choose to chase apparitions that promise to stave off the relentless March of time, or I can accept that physically it’s impossible, while also realizing that it isn’t the body that is best at getting you through the battle of life - it’s your spirit.
Do you give up because you’ve changed, or do you persist because you have changed. I would like to think I persist.

When this album came out, I was in a pretty bad spot in life & decided to talk to a therapist. In one session, he gave me a form with multiple choice questions about my feelings, mood, etc. Instead of answering the questions, I wrote out the lyrics to this song on the back of the form & gave it to him the following week.
He read the lyrics during that session, & the next session, he told me he had listened to it & better understood what I was dealing with.
Needless to say, this song hits me hard every time I hear it.

No one has mentioned it yet, but the lyrics reference to, "Ponce de Leon, and his fathom source;" is about the Spanish explorer, Ponce de Leon, who sailed to the Americas in search of the "Fountain of Youth". I think it was near St Augustine FL? I took a tour there once and the tour guide showed us the fountain if I remember correctly. It was 20+ years ago. Also remember something about a fort wall covered in sharp seashells. Soldiers feared it cuz back then to take the fort enemies would have to climb the wall cutting themselves mercilessly on seashells and the wounds would get infected causing many of them to die a painful death or lose limbs. St. Augustine was a very cool city to tour. It’s said to be the oldest city in the U.S. Like 1600’s or something. Not all of what I mention may be 100% accurate but these memories stuck with me for 20+ years. Also why I like this song so much.

This song to me has multiple levels of interpretation
1-It's literally the musical embodiement of an ancient battle seen from the point of view of a veteran fighter's emotions
2- It's a metaphor of the struggles we all face everyday's life, becoming harder as you get older and you face new battles
3- and in particular of the struggles of Maynard and the band, having to keep performing perfectly and deliver after so many years of absence from the stages. Maynard, in the specific, struggles with his voice today and isn't able to perform the same crazy screams as he used to
The images my brain creates while listening generate this sequence:
5:19 the veteran warrior is still in its tent, putting his armor, reflecting about his past battles and the fact that he has to face yet a new one
11:00 the warrior is finally armored up, leaves his tent and reaches the rest of the army lines in formation. Same taughts cross his mind... The army starts marching against the enemy
13:17 enemy army is in sight. Tension arises
16:08 the order is given, ranks start marching in close formation, arrows start to fly over their head, people start dying. Our warrior has the last reflections before the clash
19:24 the clash. Our warrior starts swinging and killing enemies. Not much time to think
20:43 the battle is over. The warrior has survived this one too. He starts crying to raugh out his emotions
ps: skullz, this is the album you'll end up loving the most

I feel like that about the middle section of most songs on this album - except this one lol. That bass solo - its tone, its little nuances, its timing, the way it perfectly leads into that polyrythm where the drums start playing mostly 4/4 over the 7/8 is brilliant. This song as a whole is easily my favorites of all their songs, and the only one on this album I can honestly say that for.
Tool captured something truly magical on Aenima, Lateralus and 10k Days - this whole album feels like a celebration of that magic long after the fact. Which is beautiful and poignant, yet just not quite the same. And that's fine, and to be expected. I am thoroughly impressed with and love this album. But relative to those other 3, it doesn't have the same magic. 💚🙏

@@robfrawley that's an excellent transcription thanks. I dunno how you're then interpreting it as a 7 over 3 polyrythm though? Can you elaborate on what you mean?
The band as a whole moves through several polyrythms throughout (that part where the guitar and bass drift from each other and line back up is amazing), but Danny it looks and sounds to me is in straight 7s. Except for that bridge which does change to 4/4 3x with an additional two beats. So yeah it's still technically in 7 but it obviously feels like the percussion is now in 4s while the guitars continue chugging the obvious 7.

@@OhOkayThenLazySusan "Can you elaborate on what you mean?" Sure! It's seven equally spaced notes that resolves over three bars of 7/16. Hence, 7 over 3 polyrythm. ;-) The pattern starts with the Mandala pattern at ua-cam.com/video/I8iqbeVnndU/v-deo.html.

      @robfrawley 5 місяців тому +7

@@OhOkayThenLazySusan Definitionally, a polyrhythm is simply the simultaneous use of two or more rhythms that are not readily perceived as deriving from one another. 🙂 Perhaps this breakdown will better exemplify the polyrhythms in Invincible: ua-cam.com/video/8-HEDFuiOfg/v-deo.html. In that video I break apart the two rhythms and then combine them again.
The first example from that video is what Danny is playing at ua-cam.com/video/I8iqbeVnndU/v-deo.html
The second example from that video is what Danny is playing at ua-cam.com/video/I8iqbeVnndU/v-deo.html
The fact that the meter is one over 16 isn't fundamental. If you want to count the song in 7/8, the polyrhythm would still exist, just in a different ratio.
Hopefully, that helps provide a better explanation! All the best.

At the age of 45, this one hits pretty hard. One gets used to the balance between the time it takes to maintain your health vs. the time it takes to maintain the ageless hustle modern culture praises. “Victory” becomes harder to achieve as you compete against younger people. The growth of wisdom begs you to continue to evolve even as it, in time, reflects an element of desperation as we become more conscious of our movement into the Autumn of our lives.

Yo Skullz, definitely take this one in as it’s a grower. Agreed that watching this one live will give you another appreciation. Justin bangs his chest the first time Maynard says “bold and proud”, the mid section of the guitar distortion sound is actually Justin as well. When the war drum beats come to a climax at the end, Adam and Justin are playing close up in front of Danny and then drift apart again, amazing. It’s one of my favs, very powerful… much love bro

That was a brilliant observation on your part about the second half of the song slowing down, kind of mimicking old age, that never occurred to me. Then I got goosebumps contemplating that thought up against what I knew was coming! The last 1/3 or so of this song makes me want to calculate polyrhythms in a mosh pit😂!
I read in Rolling Stone of maybe a different mag that interview Maynard around the time the album was releasing. He said this album will take multiple listens for it to be fully appreciated. He said the band has matured into their older years and this is the result, a more mature album.
He also said this album sounds as good now as it did in 2011. They were sitting on this release for a long time due to multiple issues, mostly legal issues though. Great review, perhaps your most insightful!

So, Ponce De Leon and Caligula were both historical figures from the ancient Roman times, if I remember correctly. So it kinda like Janmbi, in that Maynard is comparing himself to an old king. Kinda. I also think it's fucking awesome that Maynard has rolled with the Diaz bros more than a few times and might be thinking of them a little bit in this song lol

You haven't even gotten into the tin-foil-hat-conspiracy of this whole album. The number "7" and how it permeates every song in some form. (this being their 7th - (1) Opiate, (2) Undertow, (3) Aenima, (4) Salival, (5) Lateralus, (6) 10,000 days, (7) Fear Inoc.).
Furthermore, the album art themes heavily explored dichotomy and division, and so a lot of "this vs that" also appears throughout.
Then there's the fun little moment in the first song where Maynard sang "Mitosis" at the exact middle point of the song, effectively dividing the song in two. There's a lot of crazy stuff hidden throughout this album. Look for the 7's. 🤘🤘

  • @heyskipj

Spot on, Skullz! Calling out two things-ageism. Not against you, but as part of the natural theme of the song. I’m a only a few years younger than the band members, so “growing up” with the band and thinking of my past younger Invincible self hits me pretty hard. Sometimes it’s hard to get up for work and battle and be as brilliant as I was in my 20s takes everything.
Tempo-Warrior… Struggling… to remain… Consequental. They’re kind of on the nose with the song’s journey. If this was a scene in the gladiator pits you know how the scene plays out. I think the hero may have died at the end of there weren’t more songs to go.
This whole album took over a year to grow on me. A lot of sfx and slower tempo so far. But this is a risk/direction Tool has to take.
p.s. don’t sleep on the cymbal work here. Danny’s choices, tone, and mix… the attack and decay are so juicy!
