  • Skullz reacts to Lateralus by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

Black and white, then red and yellow. As our eyesight is developed as infants, these are the first colors we see. Also, to me, when he talks about pushing the envelope and watching it bend? Pushing the envelope makes me think of straight or lateral movement. Watching it bend reminds me of how space and time bend in reality. Always love your insightful Tool reactions. Please, keep them coming. ❤️

So refreshing to watch a Lateralus reaction that didn't start with "ya know, this song is based on the Fibonacci Sequence" and then discusses the math that all Tool fans already know. Building on the evolution of the band to reach this point....IS the point. You really made a great choice starting from the beginning and exploring new ideas as you go. I agree with many before me in the comments that your reactions continue to be among the best on UA-cam.

Lateralus is a great song that showcases how the members of Tool write their songs. Typically it starts out with Adam, Justin, and Danny introducing different riffs or drumming and then building the rest of the song around that. Lateralus is known for its distinct time signatures and corresponding lyrical patterns. The time signatures of the chorus of the song change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8; Danny Carey noticed this change and explained in an interview, "It was originally titled 9-8-7. For the time signatures. Then it turned out that 987 was the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence. So that was cool." So once the Fibonacci sequence theme was noticed, they decided to construct the rest of the song using the Fibonacci time sequence; it was after they were almost finished with that that they handed it over to Maynard for lyrics who was also shown the coincidental time signature, so he went a step further and incorporated the syllables of the lyrics to correspond with the Fibonacci sequence. It’s a great example of their songwriting because its often assumed that maynard is just deciding to write lyrics a certain way, but in reality its just a large collective merging of ideas. If anything, it’s a testament of how well attuned the members are with one another that this song was the result.
BTW, would definitely recommend you listen to the Opiate EP before you move on to 10,000 Days; the reason for this is because they start to revisit Opiate after Fear Inoculum and it'd probably serve you better to distance yourself a bit between the EP and the recent revisit to it
Great stuff, man. I've really enjoyed all of your videos.

So here's a spin and when I speak within the TooL Army and those who feel like I do about this band we seem to agree......that's an Ultrasound at the beginning, ironically addressing how we all start in the start of the song......they say that babies see black and white first, then as the world opens up they begin to see color......and those colors at first are red and yellow....so in the song he's growing as a human and doing all the dances we have to do to "become" what we want to be....things like anxiety (which Maynard had his whole life) "overthinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind" is pure brilliance...."missing opportunities" due to mishandling anxious moments.....(Been there) as the song grows, so does he, starts to talk of divinity and reason.....referencing back to 46&2...the wanting to be better...in a grand scheme......push the envelope (try it all) Witness the beauty (take it all in) bathe in the fountains (not supposed to, but do it anyway) break down barriers......and more than anything....KEEP GOING!!! Words to live by....the man is on another level....and surrounded himself with three of the greatest musicians on the planet!!!

I've seen Tool live 5x, and one particular time I'll never forget, they played this as the last song on the set, and when the lights came on there were people just stunned, and a lot of cryers in the audience that night. This is one of the best songs/albums ever written. It's absolute perfection. Lateralus, song and album, is their best in my opinion. I've been listening since Undertow dropped, and it's been one hell of a ride. Being along to witness the vulnerability, healing, and growth of Maynard and the band over time, is a cerebral journey that has taught me so much throughout the years. I hope they truly understand the positive impact they've had on people, and how much their music has guided those that needed it. I know, I'm one of them...

Chorus time signature goes one bar of 9/8, one bar of "8/8", and one bar of "7/8". It was apparently originally going to be called "987" and 987 is one of the numbers in the Fibonacci sequence, which a lot of this song is "based on"

The song was originally titled 987 it’s structure is based on the Fibonacci sequence Maynard uses the syllables of his lyrics in the sequence of Fibonacci numbers the concept of swinging on the spiral is based on this is well with the golden ratio it’s meaning is so complex and so deep it’s easily the most impressive heard hitting emotional song I’ve ever heard in my life I always tend to overthinking over analyze ever since I was a child and when I heard this song it changed my entire life I went from being depressed and didn’t know where to go in life to being the most happy I’ve ever been since my early years I’m 21 now btw was depressed for a good 5-6 years of my teenage life and also the concept of “black then white are all I see in my infancy.” means when we are in are infancy we only see in black-and-white the first color that an infant sees is red than yellow and then green I believe or possibly blue I will be grateful for tool for the rest of my life for what they did for me 🌀 you’ve finally reached the greatest point anyone can reach in music IMO and it only keeps getting greater from this point I think this is the most impressive song but they only elevate musically from here it’s farrrr from over haha 👍

I like your thoughtful reactions. When my wife went into labour with our 1st child back in 2005 & was hooked up to the ecography I remember saying to her cool sounds like the start of one of my favourite tool songs😁 Actually I feel lucky to be the same age as Tool band members, and 1st getting in to them with the release of Opiate - each record does sort of map to life's different stages, and as such I've loved every release. Opiate and Aenima are full of energy and anger. By your late 20s/30s life is more sorted and the focus is more on expanding horizons (Lateralus). In your 40s you do start seeing more and more loved ones passing on (10000 days). In your 50s you start getting much more reflective (Fear Inoculum) and freaking worried about what sort of world your kids and grandkids will inherit.

Yes, absolutely. The more we practice the contradictions within having a future-present orientation, the more we stand outside the aspects of imprisonment that lie within reason. To have the audacity to exercise out capacity for hope, and watch the structure we have build our lives inside of truly bend. With gratitude, we look towards the possibility of the highest achievable good.

He was phrasing the lyrics to resemble the Fibonacci sequence.
And the lyrics are in reference to how sight develops as you grow from a newborn. We don't see color initially. It's all black and white. Red and yellow are early colors that our eyes recognize. Which is why so many fast food companys use those colors in their logos. There's a primal sense of comfort we relate to those colors.

I feel like this song perfectly encapsulates the album's message that we're not perfect, we're human. And being human is the best medicine for what ails you. Express yourself and embrace what comes of it.
