- Skullz reacts to Vicarious by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

The people who said tool dipped after lateralus are crazy.
Imagine thinking Tool has a bad song SMH🧐 Who are these scoundrels
But seriously. The Fear Inoculum haters also make me shake my head. You can certainly tell there are two completely different generations of TOOL fans.
It comes with EVERY new album. Shit, Hooker with a Penis pretty much calls out those types of people and that was in response to people saying Tool dipped or "sold out" with Undertow. It wasn't until Fear Inoculum came out that I started seeing people "suddenly realizing" how good 10,000 Days was but then immediately starting it all over with how disappointed they were with Fear Inoculum.
"Oh, it doesn't sound like Tool."
GOOD. I don't want their albums sounding like one another. I want variety. I want exploration.
@@WichitaJack I hate ranking tools music but FI is one of the best albums ever
@@WichitaJack And they will all come around in the end.. We know...
Vicarious and Right in Two: the greatest indictments of humanity’s fuckery ever put to music. Looking forward to you exploring this unbelievable album.
right in two is good for sure, overall though I think this album is kinda weak. But I'm a tool nerd, back in '92 since the first EP. :)
@@mflambert 10K Days is a masterpiece, it's not open for discussion.
@@mflambert are you saying that between sips of Coke ? In your Levi 501s? With your nipple rings? Lol
@@mflambert
weak !?!? define strong ....
Bruh...Rosetta Stoned.
This album goes hard as well, and also gets very deep. Tool never lets up
Very true statement.
For that we are grateful.
I remember I was pregnant with my first son, getting ready for work.. I had no idea a new Tool album was coming out,and I hear a song playing on the radio and I was like wait a minute that's Maynard!!that's a new tool song!!! I cranked this album into my belly sonically. my son had no choice but to be born into a fan. LOL
Lol Another Tool fan born! I'm trying to get my nephew to listen to more of them! He'll come around, he has no choice 😂
Best tool mom ever ❤️🔥
Listening to this album:
Vicarious
Jambi
Wings for Marie (Part 1) + 10,000 Day (Wings Part 2)
The Pot
Lipan Conjuring + Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann) + Rosetta Stoned
Intention + Right In Two + Viginity Tres
Yes. 100%
^^^^^ THIS
YUP YUP
Nailed it!!
This!!!!!
I don’t know who thinks the quality dips starting here, but they’re weird for that. Some of the greatest are on this one. Enjoy!
Edit to add: VICARIOUSLY I relive my first listen to tool songs through you. Thanks!!!
😂😂 "They're weird" 😂👏🏼👏🏼💯
I don't think it's a quality thing so much as "This isn't what I signed up for"
Well, as a follow up to Lateralus, it has to be that way. I found this album to be refreshing but there are a couple songs that I don't desire listening to....not that they are bad though.
Lateralus is an amazing album so it's awfully hard to follow that one up. I think 10,000 Days is a great in its own way and don't look at it as falling off. Some great, great tracks on this album.
Agree. People thought "Houses of the Holy" was a drop off from "Led Zeppelin IV". Obviously it was just the normal progression of their music.
Who in the hell said that there is a Dip in their music since Lateralus??? 😂 This album will blow your mind away & Fear Inoculum will as well. All of their albums are different but different in a great way. What a way to start this album!!!
I feel like it's a SLIGHT dip, but that's saying more about how incredible Lateralus is, rather than saying this album sucks.
So, I agree that Tool didn’t dip after Lateralus. They evolved again. The Pot won a Grammy. Wings for Marie is possibly the best dedication ever written. Rosetta Stoned is a trip.
Tool will only fade when they want to fade. Until then, they just keep us all experiencing new versions of greatness.
Maynard's mother was paralyzed for basically 27 years before she died, or 10,000 days roughly. So this album is dedicated to her and it's obvious in Jambi and then Wings for Marie and 10,000 days. Those two should be listened to as a single, and it's an amazing song pair/whole album
I dont think Jambi has anything to do with his mother.
@@shiznitshnitzel4 I think it does. The lyrics certainly sound like he's longing for someone he lost.
@@adampodell9775 I think it's about internal battle to hold on to his identity in the midst of fame and fortune. To hold on to good values instead of being swayed by the temptations that success brings. I don't see how the lyrics could be perceived to be about his mom. But to each his own.
@@shiznitshnitzel4 I interpreted the lyrics "You're my peace of mind, my home, my center, just trying to hold on one more day" and some others that way. "I would wish it all away, if I thought I'd lose you, just one day". Doesn't matter, it's just the way I thought about it
@@adampodell9775 I think he's referring to himself. His center. His true self. Trying to hold on one more day, not to give in to the "devil" and the "dark side" that he referred to earlier. He even says "divided, I'll wither away." Referring to his light and dark sides
This song contains one of my favorite lyric/quotes in life: "Credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile, so Impersonal. Devour to survive
So it is, so it's always been"
I think Lateralus was their technical peak. I think 10,000 Days is their emotional peak. Both top tier albums in my book.
Tuesday is our favourite day also.
🤘🤘🤘
Completely agree!
Thanks to my younger brother, who turned me on to TOOL. He died, but I think of him everytime I put on a TOOL track.
Sorry to hear that man! A bond through music transcends this life! 🤘❤️
Big hugs for your loss, he was an awesome brother to get you into Tool, and have the good memories associated with him and the band.
I saw my first tool show with my bestie in 2001 she fought thru 2 rounds of breast cancer then ovarian cancer took her in 2017 she never got to see the new album release. I know she would have loved it! Spiral out Patty I know you were with me when I heard it for the first time with my boys.
My wife and had this as our entrance song to our wedding reception.
😂😂😂 That's hilarious!
..i personally believe this is Tools best album..
..nothing compares to it..
Yo Skullz - here's a bit more insight into the album title:
10,000 days is often suggested to be a nod to his mother who spent 27 years in a wheelchair before she passed away (27 years is just shy of 10,000 days). Although this has never been confirmed by Maynard himself, the title track itself is definitely an ode to her (both Wings part 1 and 2).
There's also a second interpretation that isn't as well known but was mentioned in an interview with Maynard. 10,000 days is a reference to Saturn's Return, which happens every 28ish years and is when Saturn "returns" to the exact point it was at on the day we are born. Saturn's Return is the end of a cycle and it's theorized that during this point in our lives we have the opportunity to leave behind all of the things we don't want to carry into the next cycle and inspire growth after the transition. He also references this in "The Grudge":
Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Lastly, and this was an epiphany I had while contemplating Saturn's Return and how amazing TOOL is, but Undertow was released when Maynard was 28/29 years old and going through his Saturn Return. It's as if Undertow was a cathartic release of what he didn't want to carry into his next cycle.
I've commented this before, but I will reiterate: you are one of the few content creators for which I can confidently click "like" even before I watch the video.
Analyzing this song is fairly straightforward, but your take on it furthers my review - even after I thought I had it all figured out.
Thank you for inviting us along on your journey! I'm excited to see your take on more tracks from this, my favorite, Tool album.
Now worries man, It doesn't get old! 😂 It's always nice hearing that I added more value to these songs for people! 💯
Yeah, Michael. I'll +1 to that. He does a good job and keeps me checking back (though admittedly, primarily just for the Tool reactions lol).
Agreed!
Decades later I still find new things in old tool songs
This whole album is a marvel. I was the guy who had Rosetta Stoned on repeat for months, lol.
It's an art piece unto it's own.
I had always skipped this song until I read the lyrics. Now it is one of my favorites.
You and me both man. Its a true masterpiece.
One more comment about a "Tool dip". I do think Lateralus is their best album, but their latest album (Fear Inoculum) is easily on par, and Tool is the only band I can think of where they can put out an album 30 years into their career and it may be their best work. I doubt I'll buy another Metallica album if released (and I love Metallica), but the next Tool album could be my favorite Tool album, and it wouldn't surprise me.
There isn’t a single album that they’ve put out that I didn’t immediately drop my jaw over. They aren’t the EP band, they aren’t the Undertow band, etc…they are a beautiful work in progress.
In my opinion, FI has one of my favorite songs on it with Descending. I’ve been a fan since the day Sober debuted on MTV, I’ve loved them and their ever changing style and message every step of the way. It’s called growth. I grew up right along side of their messages through the times (for me) that they made the most sense. FI continues my story right with theirs. Growing old and accepting but never relenting or conceding.
10,000 days is absolutely top tier Tool. Start to finish a magical journey. You won’t be disappointed 🤘
You’re going to love this album just like the rest of them. Saying it’s soft is ridiculous. It’s diverse as usual. Some are hard, some are trippy, they’re all emotional as fuck and full of wisdom, and 10,000 days (the centerpiece) is a masterpiece. I could pick just 4 songs from this album, and off of the strength of just those 4, it would still be the best thing by far that came out that year. You’re gonna love it bro 😎
Skullz giddy laughter and smiles while head banging: priceless.
"We aren't inherently good but we choose to be good" short but opens up solutions to many problems
will say it again. I am blessed to have gotten to do the Tool journey in real time. From the jump. It was a natural draw. Graduated in 89 and my entire teen years was punk rock. Minor Threat. Social Distortion. JFA. Circle Jerks. I was listening to Suicidal Tendencies at like 11. Not mainstream at all. Tool wasn't mainstream. And despite decades and huge increases in our Army, I still can't consider Tool "mainstream". Tool is not music. It is an experience. And I have watched a lot of Reactions. Your journey hands down IMHO has been the best I have seen. Honest and sincere. And much appreciated.
There is no regression in Tool, they are evolving and doing it quite well.
For the record, I have never thought Tool ever took a dip. They have matured and evolved. And I've been into Tool for over 20 years. I too have grown and evolved with their music and how I perceive their music has evolved. There is not one single other band in the world that puppeteers my soul like Tool. They have helped me through many, many trials and tribulations. They are amazing
Don't care what any Tool fan says, this is my fav album of theirs.
I love the smile at the end of the intro. It sounds like an alarm. Almost like, time to wake up, people!
Whoever is telling you that TOOL ever dipped is bonkers!
Dude, been waiting for this. Kicked my wife off her iPad and drove to work to pick up my headphones. Can’t watch a Tool reaction without my headphones. 👍
That’s dedication lol
Wings for marie 1+2 is really emotional.. get ready
The line "the universe is hostile...so impersonal...devour to survive...so it is...so it's always BEEN!" is ridiculously powerful. Really evokes the sheer brutality of nature....something so beautiful and beyond our comprehension....that can crush us like an ant at any moment. Meteorites and viruses don't care if you like living your best life #yolo! There's a poignant brutal honesty to that line that gets me. This album, unlike the previous 2, is less about Maynard's own person journey, and more about the reality we all share....our shared mythologies and beliefs and worldviews.
With one obvious exception of course being the tracks about his mom. But even those spend a lot of time focused on how _other people_ saw or percieved his mom, and what their belief system did to her.
YES!!!
You hear the bass turning on the delay at 13:09 in it just fells like perfect chaos.
Tool doesn't dip in quality, each album is the inevitable evolution of the previous album, if anything, the instrumental quality and skill increases with every album.
This is my favorite album of them all. Wings for Marie Pt 1&2 is unreal, probably the most vulnerable song by Maynard in his entire professional catalogue. In fact I think I remember reading where he regrets releasing this song. Lipan Conjuring + Lost Keys + Rosetta Stones is my favorite track(s) outside of Pushit, Third Eye, and WFM1+2, and Bottom. Lastly, I saw them live in circa 2007 and Jambi was unforgettable live.
Soft? Haha. This album has some bangers and some deep deep moving songs. This one is a ride too. I suggest you do Wings for Marie and 10,000 days together. It will be a better journey for you.
that bass line though...that's all i have to say today lol.
Tool has never fallen off
This album is an emotional rollercoaster of feels thru the songs!!
10,000 days is a drop in quality? WTF This album is the sh*t. Maynard's peek vocals. You are going to really enjoy this.
Excellent react as usual. Jambi is next. It’s my second favorite TOOL song after PuShit, and just barely above Pneuma. It’s a fucking masterpiece. Can’t wait for you to hear it.
That last few minutes of Jambi is an eargasm for me. One of my favorite sections on this album
Danny is simply outworthly on this song ......Incredible time signatures .Loved it
My take on the TOOL dipped comment is they just evolved faster Trust me there will come a time when the least favorite album and message will hit home . 10,000 days took me a while Fear inoculum wasn’t at all the album I hoped for but turned into the perfect album . My age and timeline are very similar to Adam and Maynard’s so the guidance seems as if they wrote a story on my timeline
This is TOOL at its finest imo. Like a fine wine 🍷
Tool Tuesday... YAASSS!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Contrary to the army… this is my favorite Tool album. Get the tissues ready for WFM+10KD they are a masterpiece
No idsa why people would say this is a dip after Lateralus. Maybe in the sense that it takes longer to fully get into the songs, where Lateralus has a few clear out of the gate bangers. But this album ends up giving so much more and has way more depth. From the radio-friendly The Pot to the outright bizarre Lost Keys / Rosetta Stoned (must be listened together!), from the beautiful homage to his mum (Wings of Marie & 10,000 days) to one of their greatest tracks both lyrically and musically in Right in Two, this album has immense depth and awesomeness. Personally for me it trumps Lateralus as the more mature and accomplished record. That said, Lateralus remains a true classic and will always be the album that most people associate Tool with due to its groundbreaking experimentalism. This album just subtly takes it to the next level.
They don't dip... they just get wiser.
Thank you for letting me experience tool again for the first time
Thanks for coming on the journey with me 🤘🌀
Danny and Justin take their musicianship to new heights on this album and never looked back. Easily the most dynamic the band had ever been to this point.
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies....Banger
When I heard this song on radio I was in car with my dad he was trying to convince me to check myself into rehab I had zero intentions to do it until I heard this song and found out a new album was dropping I think on Maynards bday 2006 so I agreed to go if he sent me a copy of the new album when it released. He sent me 2 copies for some reason so I gave one to another guy in rehab he is still a huge tool fan to this day and we stay in touch still. Wish I could say it has been smooth sailing ever since but I have relapsed several times but I always get back on the horse. We all feed on tragedy it is like blood to a vampire 🧛♀️ 🪡
This song, hard as it is to choose, I would have to say is my favorite Tool track.
I don't know why people think tool went downhill on this album, I listen to this album over any of their others. My favorite song is up next, I can't wait for next week's reaction!
Tools lyrics are why I believe they connect with so many people who may not even like metal music before hearing Tool!
Been waiting for this album. Amongst my music loving friends, this was the album we waited for, rushed out and bought when it was released, and endlessly discussed after we all had a chance to hear it. Can't wait to see your reactions every single song...
Edit: Just had to add, if you can get your hands on the actual CD cover, the stereoscopic pictures are amazing.
The anticipation for this was unreal! I remember all the New Album!! rumours every year or so. But well worth it
It is remarkable and kind of surreal watching Tool evolve throughout their career. They started out with anger/hate and evolved both musically and spiritually into a stoic/philosophic life view. What they've achieved is truly remarkable and is almost existing apart from the band itself. It's more of an experience than a band. Spiral Out...
Yes! My personal favorite Tool album. Enjoy!
Welcome to 10,000 Days!!! Looking forward to Tuesdays now!!
Ugh I am in love dude the way you are laughing because it's so good
Some in the tool army felt that this album was supposed to be Lateralus part 2. But it is its own “thing”. Every Tool album stands on its own merits, it’s own style. The tone and production on this album is absolutely top notch. I think this is arguably Justin’s best sounding album…he shines on 10000 days.
I'd argue FI is lateralus 2
I love how this entire song builds so perfectly to thw Last chorus and Maynard just belts it! It's poetry
It took me a while, but this album really grew on me
Justin’s bass tones on this album might be one of my favorite things about it. It’s engineered so brilliantly. And no there is no such thing as a dip in quality for Tool.
So much bright grit in his tone. Also does some very creative things on here
Justin is often overlooked overshadowed by Danny. To me Justin is the soul of Tool. His bass lines are 2nd to none, he's playing lead bass.
Excellent analysis as always. Just please do 10,000 days part 1 and part 2 together. Its gonna be a long one. But o man......
This album is a work of art for real#toolarmy🖤
Always loved the Old school alarm ringing at the start of the song. It not only fits the song because it's time to wake up, but also this is the first new Tool song we heard in several years. So it's kinda saying Wake up because we're back.
It really is the little things that Adam Jones does that really totally makes the song technically he’s not the maestro it’s Danny with the drumsticks just like a conductor But for fucks sake Adam It’s just wow I just realize he definitely sets the tone
One of my favorite Tool songs. Can't wait til you get to The Pot
I saw Maynard at a grocery store in Arizona yesterday I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen bottles of Cabernet sauvingnon in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bottles and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bottle and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
Really?? Sounds like maybe he was his "bored" self and likes getting reactions from people in his very unique style and sometimes bizarre sense of humor. We love you dear Maynard - take that you mf...er-!!
Awesome reaction! Get your tissues ready for wings for Marie & 10,000 days! Makes me tear up every time.
Oh man, you are going to cry.
It’s a beautiful thing.
Fuck yeah, it's about time 🤘......let's go 🔥🔥🔥
This song is always powerful, but live, this is a magical experience. The cohesion is incredible and the band becomes one. There is no Danny, Justin and Adam. There is just TOOL and Maynard describes its reference.
My favorite song of all time.
Tools quality is a straight journey up right to the stars. The fact that there should be people who think the quality dipped... wtf.
It's the gift that keeps on giving. ✌️
I think you're going to LOVE this album. It takes a bit to get used to the vocals being mixed even further into the back. I think this album is really Justin's time to shine. The bass is just unreal throughout.
VICARIOUSLY I, LIVE WHILE THE WHOLE WORLD DIES. much better you than I
this is a great commentary on the world we live in today.
Something you glossed over in Maynard’s lyrics in this song…
When he’s doing the “la la la” part, notice how it’s ending in “lie” each time, but done in a way that sounds like he’s just making sounds.
The lie part is obviously referencing what he was just talking about, with how people lie to themselves and refuse to admit the darker part of our psyches.
I love the double use of it in this part. It’s wonderfully subtle.
From what I understand 10,000 days is in reference to how long his mother lived after her aneurysm,, which roughly came out to I believe 28 years before she passed away!! Once again this is an excellent album a great predecessor to Lateralus
I absolutely love the stark shift on your face as the intro concluded - from serious and focused to unbridled joy when you knew what was about to come. I love the little chuckles as the force of the band hits you. I've been a Tool fan forever and I still get these reactions myself.
When you get there, "10,000 Days" and "Wings for Marie" are ONE song, divided into two tracks. It will have to be a longer reaction video, but don't DARE split them up!
10,000 Days!!! Finally! For the longest time this was my favorite album. The CD case was cool with the glasses built in was unique too. Enjoy the journey.
We cant wait either bro. Intension and Right in Two go nicely together.
Tool Tuesday is a big special treat an so is your incredible breakdown an reaction loved every second thanku so much love an God bless always x
I find that this is Justin’s best album. He just goes off and does so many creative things that sound amazing. His tone is by far the yummiest on this album in my opinion, so gritty and yet warm.
I also read in a comment on another reaction of this song, or maybe it was the song on UA-cam, Maynard was a forward observer when he was in the military, so he would call in air strikes and watch things die from a good safe distance.
You are correct. Before the album was release, this song was the first single that was release and it was played on the radio and the first sneak peek into the album.
And Tool quality did not dip, this is an amazing album. Probably my second favorite of them all.
So many good tracks to come! As always a pleasure journeying with you bro!
This is my favorite Tool album. Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days are the most honest lyrics you'll come across and if the hairs on your arms don't stick straight up and your eyes don't get watery, then you've never experienced unconditional love. I truly believe that those 2 songs are the glue of Tool Army . Can't wait till you react to Jambi, then you can watch the non-existent DVD of Jambi 2013 and you will get to see what it's like to see Tool live!
lateralus and 10,000 days are like 'as above so below'. lateralus lifts you up then 10,000 days puts you down.
As of now, this video has almost 1k lies and 0 dislikes...
Speaks for the quality of your reactions!
Maynard said that 10k was made to be their “blues” album. There were so many years between Lateralus and 10000 days…it felt like a lifetime back then. Lateralus I was a 21 year old getting ready for college; 10k I was 27 & getting ready to be a father.
So excited for this part of your Tool journey. Been following from the beginning and loved watching you react to the masterpiece that is Lateralus. I feel like this album is sometimes slept on because it’s the follow-up to such a singularly incredible record, but this one definitely demonstrates a more controlled wisdom and maturity in the wake of the explosive spiritual awakening of the last. This record has many of my favorites including The Pot, Lost Keys / Rosetta Stoned, and Right in Two. Also, you might want to have some tissues handy for Wings for Marie / 10,000 days. It’s far and away the most emotional heart-wrenching Tool song.
Keep on spiraling out, I look forward to more reactions and commentary!
Totally get you with needing to process the previous album. Well… Very excited to continue following your Tool-journey! 😎🤩
Personally 10000 Day is their best album, without question. The engineering is phenomal.
And the next step in Journey begins. So can't wait for you to hear Wings for Marie and 10,000 days, 10,000 days is so moving it makes me cry when I hear it.
I still can remember the first time I heard this as they played the whole album on the Radio just before its release, driving home in the car with the stereo cranked to 11
On 10000 days, you'll find - in my opinion - the following :
Their most moving song(s),
Their catchiest song,
Their best song and
Their craziest song.
There's too much good things in there, you'll like it.
Out of curiosity which is their best song?
Skullz... You really do a great job with these Tool videos... I really appreciate it. Thanks, man.
💪💪💪
Thanks bro! 🤘
Wait till you hear The Pot lol
For real...10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum and Undertow are my favorite Tool albums! This is the best part of the Journey Skullz
