More facts about the singer : he is the grandson of a renowned cantor, a singer of Jewish religious music. David was trained in this singing tradition from childhood but ultimately chose a different path. He heads a heavy metal band, Disturbed, and yes, he has piercings. I suspect but do not know that the band’s name may refer to the line from this song - “No one dared disturb the sound of silence.” Certainly it must have resonated for them. Be sure to watch the music video version of his powerful take on this song too. The lyrics are actually powerful, heartfelt poetry, something I never realized until I heard him sing them. Paul Simon approves of what he did with his original song, and no wonder. David brought it alive and clearly feels and projects the desperate passion of its message. David had a serious flulike illness during the Conan performance but sang anyway. He hates autotune and had insisted it not be used. When he discovered it had been used for this performance, he was furious. He has a fine, well-trained voice and insists on singing naturally.
If you want a deep voice, look up Tim Foust or Avi Kaplan. Them dudes are known to blow speakers. Two other bassists would be JD Summers and Tim Storms. JD Summers took the bassist record from Time Storms back in 2011with a G0. Tim Storms reclaimed his record and now holds, or at least held, the record for lowest note sung at a G−7.
5:36 They are called Timpani's! One of my favorite percussion instruments to play. Very easy too. Doesn't take much skill to learn! If you watched the music video though the Timpani player was using a leather based top and used plain wooden stick on them. On here they were like Mylar based tops (like the material actual drums use) and used cotton rolled sticks!
The original is by Simon & Garfunkel. It was written during a time of protest against the patriarchy that was deciding everything in our country (and still is). This song resonates deeply in the herstory of the US. Also, this is the absolute best version of this song!! 100% His voice is magical.

Think of where we were in the 60's and the warning Simon & Garfunkle gave us through Paul's lyrics; think of where we are today, through the lens of this masterful arrangement David Draiman and Disturbed gave us - and of the anger we should feel that we've failed to listen to Paul's warning. Then think of where we're headed...
The falsetto that he brings to the song, and the chilling instrumental, I like all versions of this song, but this live on Conan is my favorite. Raw, almost primal.

This is a cover of the original version by a folk music duo Simon and Garfunkel, recorded in 1965. Paul Simon wrote this song about a dream he had, that he believed was a warning about the way technology would ruin communication between people. That we would create Neon Gods and worship them. He saw this danger very early, and Disturbed believe he was right. Therefore, this cover is meant to express anger that Paul Simons warning was ignored.

JD Summers!!!!

A wonderful cover of a wonderful song. As a counterpart, you should now listen to the version from Pentatonix. Completely different and also great.
First time I heard it I almost cried !
You were so close! Disturbed is the original performer of Stone Cold Steve Austin entrance song "Glass Shatters"
I literally get goosebumps every time I hear this song, it's so beautiful
This version and the Pentatonix version are just completely different yet at the same time unbelievably great in their own ways!
This is the most powerful and amazing performance I have ever heard . Needless to say I have always loved this song.
This version always gives me chills without fail. Draiman’s voice is beyond legendary
Yes. I know. I watched the Loudwire too. :)
Did you know he threw another person out a 2nd story window freshman year?
The original is by Simon & Garfunkel. It was written during a time of protest against the patriarchy that was deciding everything in our country (and still is). This song resonates deeply in the herstory of the US. Also, this is the absolute best version of this song!! 100% His voice is magical.
You should check out pentatonix's cover of sound of silence also hallelujah there also a capella THERE ARE GOOD.just like Home Free . Pentatonix was on a show sing off they won season 3 Home free won season 4 there both very good but you should react to hallelujah first. Because Aviv Kaplan was still with Pentatonix he sang with Home Free on ring of fire he was the that put on the cowboy hat at the end
He has such a great ability to bring out the meaning of virtually any song.
David is a unique gifted vocalist .. Brilliant interpretation of the song
That split second of silence at the end shows how awed the audience was.
You should check out more Disturbed! One of my all-time favorite bands! Even better live, I still remember every second of the show...
"Down with the System" is one everyone likes, but also "Stricken", "Into the Fire", "Vengeful One", "The Light", "A Reason to Fight"... Those should get you started.
Down with the sickness
Their cover of Land of Confusion is awesome as well the music video to go with it is amazing...
If you think that’s deep, search the same song on The Voice Australia.
"What a fantastic head" got me 😆
David was sick with the flu thats why he was sitting down. Felt really weak and almost passed out backstage. Guess you can he was “Down with the sickness “ lol.. for being sick as he was that night he did an AMAZING JOB!!! ❤️
Gives me goosebumps everytime I hear this
I call these guys MOTIVATIONAL METAL.
"MM"
But it's not something I douse my ears in every day, they are so potent when it comes to evoking an emotional response from the listener that I take them in chapters not verses..
When I feel like I've failed at a task, these are the guys who go
"actually NO, in fact you are part of the problem for choosing to believe that you've lost"... And I'm back on the grind.
Cuz that's what life is, A GRIND!!! No one owes you a life of flowers and chocolates and biscuits... Humans were not designed for a life of ease.
I can't believe I JUST found your music reactions! Dude where have I been? LOL oh the rabbit holes you'll be going down now my friend lol this song rules!
Haha it’s only a kinda new channel!
I could listen to this multiple times a day!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm 66 and I have never heard anything so beautiful disturbed you are fantastic and for the song to fetch tears to my eyes is mind blowing
The falsetto that he brings to the song, and the chilling instrumental, I like all versions of this song, but this live on Conan is my favorite. Raw, almost primal.
Every now and then a talent comes along and does a masterpiece of work this is one of those times
Have you ever heard the guy called Wolf sing it?
Blow you away!
@@moosehead1183 no but now I definitely will look for it thank you 🙏! Just “ WOLF “ ?
Heard it you right it was really special but only one judge ? I’ll never know what makes that show tick !
What a fantastic head - gone! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
He was ill with the flu at the time of this performance & still is phenomenal!! He truly is amazing!
One of my favorite bands
they are awesome!
as a lot of people said befor me, you must check VoicePlay with Geoff Castellucci, first in "Oogie Boogie's Song" and then "My Mother Told Me"
Yes!!! And Misty Mountain Cold....The Headless Horseman....and Take me Home Country Roads....etc. There are too many! Geoff is a BEAST....OR DRAGON!!😁❤ Any of his songs...and also Tim Foust of Home Free and of course AVI!!!!!🎶❤🎶🤗😇
Adam- you do a fantastic job on your channels. I have loved your reactions to NHL and I love this type of music and see you react to it is awesome! Thank you
Aw thanks H!
If you think that David had the deepest voice you’ve ever heard look up Pentatonix and listen to a song that Avi is in then he’s got the deepest voice I’ve ever heard.
"Drum things?" Comments on his physical appearance? Guzzling from a water bottle? Inconsequential comments? This spectacular performance deserved better; the meaning behind the song deserved better.
This song was recorded by Simon & Garfunkel in 1963 I believe.
I once read a comment that the original performance was a warning, and this remake a threat! The best comment on this masterpiece!
You need to watch the official video. He was sick for this performance. You can really feel it more, gives me goosebumps.
Adam - if you think this guy has a deep voice you have not heard Wolf Winters. He did the same song on The Voice AU and blew Guy Sebastians' mind so much that he pressed the buzzer even though he had no spots left on his team.
David was sick when he performed this! This man astounds me. The official video is out of this world ❤
For context of why their version of this song so blew a lot of people away is that its such a divergence from their typical sound. They're typically much harder...I humbly suggest 'down with the sickness ' with a humorous glint in my eye.
The disturbed official video of "The sound of silence" has 744 MILLION views on UA-cam.. That's equivalent of EVERY man, woman, and child in America and all 27 countries in Europe watching it once each.
i would also like to point out that he was just recovering from being unwell during this performance.
Every single time I hear this version my whole body gets covered in goosebumps!! I could play it on repeat quite happily all day. And weirdly it nearly makes me cry which I don’t understand
Simon and Garfunkel wrote and recorded the original version which I’ve always loved, but I was bowled over when I heard disturbed’s version, then again when I heard Pentatonix version. All awesome artists I bow before them 🙏🏼
I am not a fan of cover versions but this one blows me away...
I am born in 1962 and of course I know the original. I like it but honestly I am a metal head...
I was driving listening to the radio and this song was played...
It blows me away. I don't listen to the lyrics cause this voice nailed me on my seat...
Such a power and half angelic and half evil...
IT IS PERFECT !!! 🤘💝🌹💝🤘
Thank you guys so much for covering this song. It will be one of my all time favourites ❣️❣️❣️
The sound of silence was written by Simon & Garfunkel. They were the originals.Pentatonix also sings this. Check it out.
Omg- his voice started out in the basement and climbed some serious octaves! That was gorgeous!
David Draiman is one of my favorite vocalists out there..
