So glad you felt it too. My son sent this to me and at 71 years of age, a 23 year Marine Corps veteran, 2 years continuous in combat in Vietnam in the late 60s ... I cried. Simon and Garfunkel sang out the warning but David Draiman drives home the rage and helplessness of humanity for not having listened to that warning!

Never done this before. We are the same age. Children of the 60’s who were there for Simon & Garfunkel’s original version of the masterpiece which has been my favorite song since it was first released. Your comments touched my soul. I can’t listen to Disturbed’s version without the tears streaming down by the middle of the song. No matter how many times I hear it the memories of the past 70 plus years stream by and I wonder what we’ve learned. In any event good luck brother and thank you for your service - although “thank you” is hardly enough to describe how I feel.

I've always loved Simon and Garfunkel and this was one of my favorites after Bridge Over Troubled Waters.
When I heard Disturb version it became my favorite. You can't help but think about what he's saying and the feeling he puts behind it. Makes me cry, makes me think people should cut off TVs, games, and phones and just talk and listen to each other. To come together as the human race and not all the nonsense that's going on in the world today. Too many people killing each other, too many children going hungry, too much political bullshit! God bless those that have served this country and especially those that have died for it. We shouldn't let any of it be in vain.

you know, the fact that bands make angry and violent sounding music it doesn't mean they're an angry & violent band. For example - Suicide Silence have a song called You Only Live Once which sounds very violent but has a positive message. The band sold Mitch Lucker's (the previous vocalist which tragically died in 2012) shirt that he wore in the music video for 800$ and bought toys for kids in Christmas with the money. The metal community is the most loving & dedicated one, despite all the stigmas...there's no "beautiful side" to metal, metal is beautiful.

People are so speechless when they hear this song,
it’s very spiritual. Silence to me here means so many things. The silence of tranquility and authenticity in the beginning, and the silence caused by materialism, urbanisation, disconnection…silence that “cancer grows” in the middle of the song, and the silence we need for us the hear the warnings and signs bringing us back to ourselves, the silence that is ourselves.
    This song is a prophet.

To answer your questions, Disturbed is actually a four-piece band, their singer being David Draiman. He has that effect on people when it comes to his singing, especially with this song in particular. Fun fact, his grandfather is/was the head cantor at the main synagogue of Jerusalem itself, so he absolutely was born with this gift of singing.

Michael Ozayu My parents loved Simon and Garfunkle, so I grew up listening to this song. But I never UNDERSTOOD it until I heard this version. I've heard this version at least 100xs easily and it still brings me to tears each and every time. I can't even imagine hearing this live. I'd probably crumble to an emotional heap on the floor, and I'm not that kind of person usually.

Sierra Sugar the only reason it doesn’t bring mento such tears anymore is really because of overplay. That, and also I share the exact same sentiment being shared in this version: that nothing has changed and it’s worth being pissed about. But it is still a gorgeous piece of work and frankly had redefined Disturbed as much more than a metal band.

Like, they were acknowledging that the world is falling apart, but they've kind of resigned themselves to their depressing fate. His name is David Draiman, and he is as spiritually deep as his cover of *The Sound of Silence*
He STOPPED A SHOW to save a woman's life as she was being crushed by the crowd in "The pit." He honored her by having her on stage as he continued to perform.
I am a messenger through music. I have made people laugh, cry, and even change negative attitudes to positive... but I am easily forgotten, and that's okay. *David Draimon* can NEVER be forgotten. He was alone in the studio to record this song. He was so broken, his band had to make sure he was okay. THAT is *David Draiman*

It's a powerful message in the song itself as written, but Disturbed added such an extra intense layer of emotion over it all - sadness, solitude, empathy, a deep desire to save those silent people, and rage at everyone paying attention to their Neon Gods (technology, politics, entertainment, etc.) instead of paying attention to each other.
Disturbed took this from the haunting folk song of Simon and Garfunkle into an unbridled walk through all the emotions that any person who pays attention in this modern age feels about the world we live in.

The sound is not the power.. The sound is only the conduit.. Its power of the words within the tone, to reach the darkness, within the soul, where true power lies. Even when I first heard the 2 men whose voices I heard sing this first when I was very young, and felt the words come from them, I knew it had power. Disturbed tapped that power. They knew there was something more to be unleashed. And to see another feel that power makes me shake. Cause I can feel it as I watch.

The S&G cover also appears on Disturbed's latest album, Immortalized." Dave Draiman, Disturbed's lead singer responded, "Thanks so much to everyone for their kind words, and especially to Mr. Paul Simon himself. Vocally you have to be extremely talented and gifted for your voice to fit in a metal band. Some vocalists struggle with just regular singing, these vocalists go above and beyond, meaning when they sing "normally" they have extreme control over their voice and thus produce just staggering results.
