This Old Duck Gun (Ep. 2): Remington Sportsman 48 - History, Shooting, Patterns

In this return to the "This Old Duck Gun" series started in 2018, Drake walks through the History, Shooting, and Patterning of the Remington Sportsman 48 and 11-48 series. The specific example in the video is circa March of 1951 and is in 95%+ condition with perfect bluing and near perfect stock finish. Drake also overviews the changes from the prior autoloading shotgun model by Remington, the Model 11, and the 11-48 series.

I’ve got an 11-48 in 16 gauge that is in fairly good shape. It cycles light 7/8 ounce loads up to 1 3/4 ounce tss loads flawlessly. I also paid $350 for it. Love these old guns.

My cousin had one years ago with a cuts compensator. I could hardly stand sitting aside of him because of how loud it was. Still hurt with ear plugs in!

I’ve got an 11-48 in 28ga with a full choke plain I bought while I was looking for the 1100 28ga its a fun little gun I’m on the look out for a second barrel

@@tyguy365 fantastic- I would love to have one in 28ga. Good luck on your search for a spare barrel. The 28ga 11-48 parts are hard to come by; i hope you fair well.

Can you shoot steel shot out of the modified choke version?

You can, if you were to want to. I would recommend not shooting larger than No.2 shot out of it, though, and being sure to only give it modern loads that have heavy walled wads. Old steel loads many times did not use thick enough wads to protect older bores.
The full choke could be used with steel as well, but I would not shoot larger than No.3 or 4 steel shot through it.
With the number of reasonably priced bismuth loads now available by the box and the case, I see little to no reason to use steel shot loads in old duck guns like the Sportsman 48/11-48.

@@billlam1850 of course, happy to help. unless you are shooting in a place that prohibits lead shot, just go that route. Small steel like 6’s and 7’s will work fine though.

I just shot the Vintage relic with #8 shot and it fired fine. It cycled okay except the load carrier is now jammed in the closed position where I cannot load the magazine. Has this ever happened to you or anyone?

@@billlam1850 sounds like the cartridge stop lever is jammed and preventing with lifter from operating. Pull the gun apart and see if there is any failed components or if it just needs to be cleaned.
