  • What is the Practical Range of a 12ga Slug Gun using Foster slugs? In this video, Drake takes a look at what the limitations of one shooter and a relatively accurate slug load are out of the Benelli M1014. What do you think? Where do you draw the limits with foster slugs out of a "slug gun"? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks, I appreciate that. I've been wrong before and I've been right before. I learn from both. No shame in trying and having some fun while learning.

You gave that Benelli every advantage towards long range hits, scope, tripod, good ammo. And we saw 1 hit at 135 and about $200 worth of misses at 150. I believe “practical accuracy” is where you will hit significantly more than you miss. 1 hit out of 3 shots at 135 is not practical accuracy. 100 yard’s obviously was, maybe 125, and that’s not a dig from me, that is pretty impressive. Thanks for doing this test and I recommend a bronze brush on a cleaning rod in an electric drill to get the 1/8” of lead out of your barrel. I have switched to Federal Deep Penatrators because they are copper washed and leave absolutely zero leading in the smooth bore.

I did not continue to shoot the 135 yard mark and make multiple hits after I found the hold over because I was running out of the TruBall slugs. I wanted to make sure that I had enough ammo to connect at 150 multiple times if I could find the hold-over. I was obviously unsuccessful, but if I could do it again on the first go around, I would do the video differently. I called the practical range 135 yards, as that was easy to accomplish once I knew the hold (which was only about 12" above desired POI). But, I don't think I articulated any of that in the video, so I would agree with your assessment based on what I presented.
I may re-try this test with establishing a baseline of drop and group sizes at ranges from 50 to 200 on a 6ft target board playing with the zero range from 50 to 100 yards, to see what gives the most practical point blank range and most minimal hold over past the PBR. Ultimately I just want to consistently demonstrate that what I know is possible is actually possible and not a bunch of BS - regardless of how "practical" that shooting may be.
Besides, who doesn't want to see a "Snipping with a 12ga Slug Gun" video? HAHA!

Good video. Thx for the efforts and the showing. Good knowledge to have. Thumbs Up. Maybe go a little closer to the mic when talking. But what a pretty piece of land it is you are shooting on
    Again thx
(edit) Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. God Bless

Hello Drake,I have long wondered what the effective range was on a slug.Iwould like to see 00 buck shot could do at those ranges.Never the less may God bless you and your family this Christmas.Zane

The best patterning buckshot loads will only be practical/effective at a max of around 70-ish yards. Pattern density with a very low count of projectiles is very difficult to maintain.
For 3" 12ga loading, 00, 000, and 0000 pellet counts sit around 8 to 15 pellets. While each pellet carries lethal energy past 100 yards, the likely hood of obtaining a solid hit in the vitals of a target at that range are very low. Even the best patterning buck loads around and a great patterning shotgun limit your range to 70 to 75 yards. After that, the patterns just fall apart. Even with my 0000 (.380") 12 pellet load for the 10ga, max practical range is right at that 70-75 yard mark, even though those .380 cal round balls are capable of dispatching game well past 125 yards. It's all about the pattern density. If you can't land at least 2 or 3 pellets in the vitals (8 to 12" circle depending on the size of the game/target) with a buckshot load, you can't call it within range.
In a combat scenario, projectiles down range are better than none, but for hunting there is no point to using buckshot loads past the 60 yard mark since error in distance estimation will be present and the objective is to dispatch the game animal, not wound.
Nonetheless, it is a good idea for a video demonstrating such practicality in range. Thanks for watching and the comment, Zane! Merry Christmas, happy new year, and God bless!

I hit a seagull on top of a dock piling second try with a slug at ~125 yds before. Standing, with a 18in smooth barrel Maverick 88, PGO. Forget what load but it would have been something cheap from Wal-Mart. So imo 200 yds with a good, dedicated slug gun, with magnification zeroed to your load of choice is 100% possible, maybe just not ethical unless you're seriously hungry. Also, not realistic for your average shooter. I'm a well above average shot. And it was my first real gun so I was putting an obscene number of rounds through that thing every weekend, in a casual but competitive environment with all my buddies trying to one up each other with increasingly difficult trick shots like a game of HORSE with guns instead of basketballs. So I had WAAAY more trigger time than 99% of individuals would invest into a pistol grip 12g

    Hi
Hope you're doing well.Lena here from Kalkal. We have been working on high-quality boots for years and boots made from environment-friendly material are our priority. We are going to release an upgraded hunting boots.
We think the waterproof & anti-slip boot will be a great helper for when you work outdoors.are you interested in testing boots? Thank you😊

Does your company manufacturer footwear for men who have sizeable feet? Such as American size 14 to 16+? Do the boots have arch support and durable enough to handle hundreds of miles walked in a hunting season? If so, we have something to talk about, but if they are rubber junk or cheap leather with single stitch seams it'll be a hard pass from me.

The silence says it all. I’m with you on good boots, I run a skidsteer pretty often and those machines are boot killers.
