      @@thetnpickers I think i bought t in 2000. I have shot it, of course, just not as much as some of my other guns. What caught my eye was the condition. I'd rate it an honest 95%.

    I recently acquired a Sportsman 48 16 gauge made in November of 1954. I was surprised how light it feels, It was in poor shape and had a couple of broken parts so I tried my hand at refinishing it and it turned out pretty decent, I'm waiting on a new extractor then I'll try it out.

    I have a 11-48 16 gauge but I also have that same .22 I’d have to look at it for the model number but if you could do a video breaking it down that would be amazing. I tried to clean it years ago and couldn’t get it back together properly and my grandma had to take it to a gunsmith.

    I've been shooting 11-48's and Sportsman 48's in all gauges offered for 60+ years. If all else equal there should be very little difference and in weight between them. The Sportsman 48 was a little less expensive. It had no engraving and the magazine tube was shortened to allow only two rounds so that it was always legal for migratory birds. That's why it was called the Sportsman. Otherwise it was exactly the same as the 11-48. Essentially it was the same as the Browning A5 without the hump back. Browning licensed the use of his design to Remington in 1905 when it was just called the Remington Automatic Shotgun and looked exactly like what we know as the Browning A5. There were a few differences. It started being call the Remington Model 11 in 1911 and continue until 1948 when the hump back receiver was changed for the 11-48. While there are some internal differences it was and is still the Browning long recoil design with the famous "double shuck" that you feel when firing. The checkering pattern was changed somewhat in the mid to late 1960's.
    Little known is that although Remington officially quit making and cataloging the 11-48 in 1968 it was still being made as the Mohawk 48. Those had the same stock and checkering pattern as the last 11-48 or Sportsman models. They were sold exclusively by the big box stores like Kmart until the mid 1970's when Remington ran out of the parts that were left over when 11-48 was officially discontinued in favor of the 1100. Happy hunting boys and girls!😀

      @@thetnpickers If you're referring to my long comment on the history of the Remington Model 11 and 11-48 series of shotguns you are certainly welcome to use it. It's all public information that can be found with a little research. Sometimes you have to use old books or magazines instead of the Internet. I'm just old and have been around them for a long time.
      Here's some more FYI. Although there are several small parts
      in the 11 or 11-48 that can wear out and cause feeding and ejection problems, the most common problems are caused by weak and/or collapsed main action spring located in the butt stock and the recoil spring located on the outside of the magazine tube. Art's Gun Shop in Missouri has a good videon about installing a rebuild kit that they have. He recommends his special lubricating oil but in previous videos he always recommended full synthetic motor oil on the magazine tube. Also polishing the magazine tube. The new springs will greatly reduce the recoil.
      It's too bad that young shooters didn't get to see Remington in their hey day before bad management decisions by new owners caused them to go down the tubes. IMHO they should have fought the law suits instead of letting the lawyers and bean counters run the show.Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

    I've got Dad's 11-48 manufactured in February 1952. He used it exclusively into the 1980s, always kept it maintained, but then suddenly it failed to eject on the 2nd or 3rd shot. Gunsmith claimed it was dirty, so he cleaned it. Jamming continued. Dad continued to use it as a single shot, then later got a Weatherby Orion. I cleaned it, oiled it, then shot it the other day, first time to be fired in 35+ years. Jammed on first shot. Empty did not eject, but second shell was released from the magazine, causing a serious jam. Had to be disassembled to remove live rounds. Any ideas on what the problem is?

    • @thetnpickers
      @thetnpickers  Рік тому +1

      It could be several things going on. Might possibly be a weak recoil spring. I’d like to recommend you call Arts Gun Shop. They specialize in these types of actions and which parts would cause this type of malfunction. Check them out here artsgunshop.com . Please let me know how it goes! They will probably recognize your problem over the phone and offer the parts you would need to correct the issue. Stay in touch!

      2.75 inch shells must be fully crimped or rolled down to regulation size and width or else this gun will jam every time. It just has very low tolerance for slightly oversized shells.
      I have been sold shells advertised as 2.75 but were actually more like 3 inches long and would jam this gun as soon as the round left the tube. Properly sized rounds cycled no problem.

    • @macmccollum6064
      @macmccollum6064 11 місяців тому

      Think you're on to something. I was using reloads that were less than perfect with a crimping issue. Also replaced the action spring. Fires like a new gun now.@@Steve-pe1qt

    Is the forend cracked on the sportsman?

    • @thetnpickers
      @thetnpickers  2 роки тому +2

      HEEEEEY GOOD EYE friend! Yes, there is a surface crack that does not go through to the inside. That shotgun has seen a LOT of field use but still shoots like a dream! Man, they sure made them right back then! During this transition time, the stocks for both shotguns were identical and even made under the same roof. The 11-48 you see with it traveled the entire south eastern United States with the Sportsman 48 in hunt of everything from dove, quail, pheasant, ducks, rabbits, squirrels, you name it. What a great pair of shotguns!

    Ive got a 28 gauge vent rib and it won't cycle anything I find on the shelves which is only monarch or fiochi field loads. Any suggestions?. I stripped it all down and and cleaned everything. Some ahole spray painted it multiple times. So I sand blasted and cerakoted it. But it had cycle issues before hand. I've smoked hundreds of dove with it but it's so indecisive on function. Now I've finally got around to refinishing everything and it still don't function correct

      have you considered an action tune up kit that replaces all the springs in your gun? that can certainly turn things around. let me ask a few friends for ya, what model and approx what year do you have?

    • @davewinter2688
      @davewinter2688 Рік тому

      Your gun probably needs the recoil spring and main action spring replaced. Those old springs tend to compress or collapse over the years. Pins and other small parts also wear out. Check out Art's Gun Shop. He had a new U-tube video about this very subject, including a kit with all the necessary parts for the spring replacement.

    • @johnpeschke9824
      @johnpeschke9824 Рік тому

      You have to run these guns with the magazine tube oiled for proper operation. Remington recommended 30w motor oil back in the day. Some of the newer models have a felt wick in the barrel ring that you add oil to
