  • When you are thinking about Small Adventure Bikes, it's hard not to think of ADV Matt. Few, if any, riders in North America have travelled more on a Small Adventure Bike than he has. When I wanted to get someone Elses opinion on the new Royal Enfield 450, I knew Matt was the man to go to. - Frank

I'm in Australia. I have a 450 Himalayan. It's a little heavy. A few vibes. But after 1000km (600 ml) I love it. Good on road. Really good on dirt. I have a BM 1200 GS. The himalayan is as comfy and feels so much lighter. But i miss the BM's power. I also have a DRZ 400E set up for adventure riding. Compared to the Himalayan It's uncomfortable (even with a better seat), has poor road manners but is better in the really tough stuff. But not that much better (so far). The Himalayan is a cross between the BM and the Suzuki. Looking forward to a long ride in the Australian desert soon.

Hello David, thank you for the comparison of the 450 and the DRZ> The Suzuki is a very popular bike in the USA as well. I see a few geared out for adventure now and then, and they do look uncomfortable! Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank

Seems you were hard on the Himalayan with regard to the air filter. I looked for the corroboration on where the new bike’s air filter was located and how to access it but came up short. What did you find for a reference? Assuming you are correct, did you check the maintenance intervals for the bike? It is very likely the air filter replacement will closely match the valve check interval. If that is the case the tank would likely have to be removed anyway (no additional labor change if dealer is doing the valves AND if you have the capability to do the valves valves yourself a non issue). The hardest part of removing the tank on most bikes is removing the plastics to get to it. The new Himalayan doesn’t seem to have much in the way of interference or plastics.
With regard to the VStrom 1000 air filter it is annoying to change, but takes only 30-45 minutes if that is all you are doing. Other bikes with difficult air filter replacements are the various Africa Twin versions, the new Transalp, and I’m sure many more.
It’s hard to do the comparison you are attempting because you don’t have the bikes. You are able to say what the current 390 Adv has from your vast experience but don’t have any idea what the new 390 Adv will have. Understand speculation is that it will be more endurolike than the current road oriented version. Perhaps you could have pointed out that the pegs are located lower on the Himalayan and were not designed by mentally challenged individuals in that they are flat, not angled like the current 390 Adv.
I like that you gave much credit to RE for trying to design a bike to give buyers what they want rather than telling them that the bike is what they need (Japanese style).
With regard to weight perhaps you could do a fair comparison as to what is on the bike. From pictures it looks like it comes with crash bars (8-10 pounds), a center stand (~8 pounds), and a rear rack which would add several more pounds. I’m not sure about the differences in gas tank size between the models , but a gallon more of gas would correspond to about 6 pounds…

@@MrSrijit Thank you for that link. Tank removal looks very easy on the new Himalayan; much easier than on my VStrom 1000… That is an excellent video in that it showed the location of many of the bike’s other components.
@Adv Matt and @One Old Man Riding - this video shows how robust the Himalayan is - looks very sturdy and able to take abuse. Perhaps you could contrast how poor you think it is (and why) compared to the current version of the 390 Adv….

Matt, the new 390 engine itself is about 2kg lighter. The new stronger frame is heavier. Sadly I argue that the 2025 adventure will be slightly heavier overall. And it seems certain, because there now crystal clear footage of the two riding together, that there will be an enduro version as well.

Good discussion guys is it me? I'd swear you two could be brothers. Seriously first thing I thought. My question is that at 430 pounds the Royal Hemi is heavier than a DR650, and a Gen 1 KLR650. I think with a few easy suspension mods the DR650 would hold its own plus it has huge dealer/aftermarket support, and the reliability of both bikes bike are legendary. (as long as you do the doohickey)

Guys, the Kawasaki Versys 300X would be a killer unicorn “Explorer” - NOT “adventure” MC if checking & resetting the valves on the maintenance schedule costs from dealerships were NOT one-third the MSRP selling price !!! What a damn shame for a fun explorer bike, sad. Have either of you guys even gave it a look?

That seemed like ages ago when we talked about those bikes. My, my have things changed since then. These bikes need to stretch their horsepower up to around the 60hp mark to really bridge the gap between small and medium bikes. Returning back out west has been a huge reintroduction to riding in hurricane force winds coming off of the mountains. it has been much too frequently. As much as I love my 390 Adv, I like to be able to ride the speed limit in a head wind. Look forward to more discussions with you and which direction you go for your next bike.

Re. Air filter under tank. I'm sure the tanks could be made to hinge at the rear, with a prop to keep it up, and no need to disconnect any cables or pipes. Come on engineers try a bit harder,

On an interview somewhere I saw an engineer saying Indians like they're motorbikes heavy, as they associate weigh with quality / strength. Could have been just marketing BS.

I owned the old himalayan from new, heap of junk, with masses of non-simple issues, to the point that R.E. bought it back off of me after 1400 miles of disappointment. So buyer beware on the new one, their build quality and quality control is dire. It offers nothing compared to the 390, the suspension is non adjustable, it is heavier, no lean sensitive abs, vibration issues reported already, non adjustable levers, no backlit controls. Same price as the 390 for less.
The cfmoto, the issue with it is weight and the resale value plummeting.
Got rid of my Tenere 700, cos of weight. No use to me at 65 year old and skinny.
I'm sticking with my 390, there's nothing to touch it for the roads and trails I ride on here in Southwest Scotland. The new one hopefully will just be even better.
Oh, and the triumph scrambler is not an offroad bike, if it comes to market there. It is a perfect town bike at best.
    Orra best lads.

I am Indian, and as much I am proud that these bikes are being manufactured here, be it the 390 ADV, Scrambler 400, or the Himalayan 450. I can surely say, I will never go for an RE! The quality control of KTMs and Bajaj is way ahead.
