For those of us who are older (I’m nearly 59) and we were all listening to this in our mid to late twenties when it was new, how lucky were we? Queensryche was a metal orchestra that produced dozens and dozens of wonderful songs, and this was just one of them! Wow!
Yes, I'm 57. I had this cassette. Remember those lol. His voice was amazing. Music now is awful.

The song is about teaching a child that is having nightmares how to lucid dream. Lucid dreaming is when you are aware that you are dreaming and rather than waking up immediately you control the dream.
I learned to be a lucid dreamer to escape the loneliness as a child I'll never forget the 1st time I was actually able to fly I worked so hard at it for a few years and after that experience I looked forward to going to sleep and my dreams are vivid and alive and fascinating to this day at 62, though they have not come as frequent since im working long hours. :/... This song blew me away when I heard it, It fills the heart with emotion you can only understand in a lucid dream...
The man playing the guitar was the writer of this song. His name is Chris DeGarmo. He was inspired to write it one night after checking on his daughter who had had a nightmare.

I remember when I heard this song the 1st time in 1990, I caught it mid song during the guitar solo, it literally felt like time stood still, I was blown away it was so beautiful the background music was magical, I went to work and told everyone I've herd the best song I've herd in my life, but at the time I wasn't familiar with Queensryche but I could pick up on good music no matter if it was rock or soul, the station at the time played a few more songs but didn't announce the song title, anyways I waited and listened to the same rock station for a few days the song didn't come on again, I was so devastated but one day the following week it came on again and I herd it from the beginning, song title and group name I was so excited went to work told my friends st work, they were like ohh yeah those guys they are awesome, sad they laughed at the way I pronounced the group name, went to the record store and bought the single on cassette, I still have that cassette to this day, I listen to it over & over for years, they had the mission song on the other side of the tape, that song grew on me, I love this band & this song

I used to have Queensryche's live concert in Tokyo on VHS tape back in 1984.
I wore that video out!
Every time I'd watch it, my Mom (she was a widow at that time) would watch it with me.
She would comment "That man is gorgeous!!!"
I would laugh and say "MOM!!!UGGGGHHHH!!! 😁😁😁
What I wouldn't give to relive those moments with her.
She passed away in 2008 from breast cancer.
I miss her sooo much 💔💔💔

Much more of a rock song by “Take Hold of the Flame” really shows Geoff Tate’s vocal range. Their live performance in Tokyo (I Think) will blow your mind!

You have just dipped your toe into one of the GREATEST voices in rock! Geoff Tate is an, Incredible singer and the ENTIRE band were also GREAT musicians!!. Empire the album was recorded 30 years ago and, If you listen to the entire album in it`s content you would swear it was written yesterday. And, If you REALLY want to expand your Queensryche catalog then, LISTEN to the ENTIRE previous album " Operation Mindcrime" If you dare!. It`s a concept album that tells a story from start to finish.
There are great songs that come around ever so often that captivate or mesmerize you. Songs that start out slow and builds to a crescendo and in the end, the bottom falls out. Free Bird, Stairway To Heaven, I'm Your Captain and Alive just to name a few and this song fits right in with those songs. The Goose bumps start jumping when they hit I with that harmony. A great song that will stand the test of time.
It's about a child having bad dreams and the parent helping them learn how to control them. Dream control is a real thing! A favorite song.

No, no it wasn't. It was about Chris DeGarmo's life event when his daughter (a very young at the time) had a night mare and he calmed her down. It inspired him to make this like a lullaby of sorts.

it's about lucid dreaming which is being aware and conscious that you're dreaming while asleep without waking up and also facing your fears and overcoming them by dreaming anything you like... yeah, it's pretty deep
The song is inspired by a book about lucid dreaming that the guitarist of the band read, and when one of his children had a bad dream, he was inspired to write the song. Lucid dreaming is a technique one can develop which allows you to realize you are dreaming without actually waking up, which allows you to then control your dream and take it where you want. I’ve dreamt lucidly, and it’s indescribable. I felt electric (I don’t know how else to describe it) being in another world that was just as real as the waking world.

Watch Queenryche's 'Operation Livecrime'. Your mind will be blown!! Musically and vocally these guys are top notch and on that World Tour which 'Operation Livecrime' was recorded they were the top live band on the planet during that time.

Same. Saw them in Miami 1989 for the Empire tour, got to see them do the entirety of Operation Mindcrime... that was an incredible experience.

The song was about Lucid Dreaming. Being aware of the dream as you are in it. So, in that state, you are aware and actually in control of everything that happens in the dream. Nice review!

I may be wrong, but pretty sure the lead singer was Classical or Opera trained. Read that somewhere once. You can hear it in his voice and delivery.

I remember when this song first came out and was just blown away at the song from the music to the lyrics, it's an emotional song and put together very well and effective!!!!

Guitarist Chris Degarmo (with the double guitars), wrote this song after his song after his son had a nightmare......rest is history.

last time i saw an interview about this song.. it was a lullaby written to his daughter who dreamed of a death of a loved one.. hence the lyrics all about being a dream and to trust him and what he says as he helps guide her through the dream. but that has been decades ago LOL shows my age.. just found you at random and now liked and subbed.. might make a suggestion as i saw it here by someone else also.. geoff tate is a vocal beast with a stellar range.. check out the live version of take hold of the flame to see just how big his range is and doing so while live vs in a studio... he is amazing. like you two. so rock on!!! \m/

One thing that would be surprising to know is that in the excerpts where the dream world begins and the lady is speaking the voice over comes from the movie Hellraiser listen to it she says help me and this is the exact same woman in the exact same movie I would bet my life on it

my Grandpa taught me about lucid dreaming. He new I was troubled as a child and it really helped me escape. This song is like him singing to me. I makes me well with emotion.
