Then. After take hold of the flame, I suggest EMPIRE, then even if you don't react to it the whole od OPERATION MIND CRIME is arguably the greatest concept album ever made.
@ThelSuperlKing I mean. We had the radio and blank tapes so, we recorded it lol. I had so many radio tapes it wasn't funny . Then having that one friend who had the dual cassette and we'd all copy each other's tapes they bought while we all child or threw the football/played basketball
Full album of “Operation Mindcrime, “Operation Livecrime” would be great to understand each track of one of the best rock opera/concept album performed in it’s entirety. Hands down! Best vocalist along with Bret Smith from Shinedown. See Queensrÿche many times with Geoff & never a disappointment.
Geoff Tate in his prime had such incredible range and beautiful tone. It's awesome that you noticed the strings - they were arranged by the late, great Michael Kamen. Thanks for checking out some Queensryche!
Geoff has a very dark speaking voice. The first verse is very close to his normal voice. And then he just goes up from there! One of the best rock voices of all time. I also love the chorus voices. They start in harmony and splits with one going up, and the other going down. Be safe
Fun note is that Empire, the album this is from, was produced to be listened to with headphones which is why there are those fun auditory adds. When the debuted the album in Seattle, all attendees received a set to listen to.
The geniuses of their music genre. Queensryche’s music will stand the test of time, like all great bands/artists. The best orchestration in any rock/metal song ever. Hauntingly beautiful!
Take Hold of the Flame live in Tokyo 1984 is the best live version. Studio is also great. Great song on the other spectrum of Geoff's voice. Love to hear it. It sticks w/ you.
Take Hold of the Flame (live in Tokyo 1984) has already been mentioned, but another live performance I enjoy is I Will Remember, which they did on MTV's Unplugged series.
I think it was the Charismatic Voice who described Geoff's voice as fundamentally smooth, like milk chocolate. He may add things to it to change its texture, but the smoothness never truly goes away. Incredible range, though this isn't the best song to hear his high belt. This song has been described as more Pink Floyd-like than most of their songs. I'd recommend 'Suite Sister Mary' for something truly wonderful.
There have been many power ballads written by rock bands over time. At the inception of that sort of song, it was a trend many groups jumped on. And all these years later, it remains a well-known type of rock tune. But this particular composition still stands above most all others. Obviously refined and sophisticated, it is a progressive metal masterpiece.
You have to check out Take Hold of The Flame performed live in Tokyo 1984! Crazy range and perfect vocal transition and placement. His vocal gymnastics are otherworldly! Also, check out I Will Remember performed live acoustically on MTV 1991 or 92? Also, you have to hear his vocal gymnastics in Eyes Of A Stranger! Please do a review of all of these! I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Anybody else remember him doing "Scarborough Fair"? That still haunts my memory. Granted, not "Take Hold of the Flame", but still such a display of Geoff's talent.
Song won “ Video of the year “ I believe at the MTV awards. Everyone will say to watch” take hold of the flame “ but honestly any song he is in a banger. I suggest checking out their MYV unplugged set and Della Brown, Lady wore Black or I will Remeber. They even covered Simon and Garfunkel song “ Scarborough Fair “. Legendary band and BEAST of a vocalist.
Shout out to Chris Degarmo who wrote the song. For more of this side of Geoff's voice check out their MTV Unplugged show, especially The Killing Words and Scarborough Fair.
Such a powerfully sweet, epic song from Queensryche. Just an absolutely beautiful piece of music written by Chris DeGarmo, and Geoff's vocals are the perfect complement to the instrumentation. The middle part about lucid dreaming seemed sinister at first until I understood what it was all about. I love the story of waking from a horribly bad dream...realizing it was only in your mind...your parents are right there watching over and protecting you, and you can safely fall back to sleep (with Brahm's lullaby playing on the cello).
Love when people's first reaction to Geoff is Silent Lucidity... so long as they progress to other songs to truly appreciate his range. Yes, he goes up an octave in this, but he's got a couple more available that aren't used in the song. Regardless, he's remarkable. There's a performance of Silent Lucidity, live on MTV that's absolutely perfect too.
Great reaction, Jennifer... Geoff Tate is one of Julia Nilon's favorite singers and she introduced him to Fairy Voice Mother... if you want to be further mind-blown, please react to Take Hold of the Flame, live in Tokyo.
Don’t get used to this laid back, mellow sound. Queensryche is a hard rock band, and Geoff has the vocals to match. I’d suggest Jet City Woman, or anything off Operation Mindcrime
If you like this one then there is an unpugged version of "I will remember" that you will LOVE. In contrast. If you want to hear Geoff's ridiculous range then the live Tokyo version of "Queen of th Ryche" will knock you down. However, there best album, IMO, is Operation Mindcrime. The album is a full story from start to finish but if you want to pick a couple then there is "Speak", "I don't believe in love" and of course "Eyes of a stranger". And then.. There is the Empire album lol
Jennifer! I'm new to Queensryche as well so this is a new journey. I have to say this song makes me think of my younger days and Pink Floyd. Just something about the tone and the chorus and bits and bobs in the song that take me in that direction. That might just be this song as I know these guys do some metal. But like you I'm intrigued. Great reaction and analysis Jen.
This one brings me to tears every time (with Geoff sings it). I saw them in concert right after Geoff left the band. (Queenryche was the opening band for the Scorpions that night). So sorry I missed the chance to hear him sign this.
such a melancholic song - i listen to it I get taken to a dark place, a terminal place, a futile place - but then you feel this big hug, and get told, it's ok
If you watch Take Hold of the Flame (Live in Tokyo 1984) , have the lyrics up. It's an amazing live performance, but the quality being 40 years old some of the words aren't as clear. But the E5s are!
Been a favorite song of mine ever since I first heard it in High School over 30 years ago. Absolutely gorgeous. Takes me back 1993. A particularly warm May afternoon. We all went to go bridge jumping into the river after school. This was playing on the radio.
Geoff had opera training. He’s always been my favorite singer. My favorite song is ‘I Don’t Believe In Love’ but I love all his music. That voice still gives me chills.
Let us please not jump directly to Take Hold of the Flame, there are so many other great songs from this band! I'd love to see Jet City Woman, no one ever gets to that song because they end up going straight to Take Hold...
I've never thought of the song as sad. What's always stood out to me was the love of a father for his child and his desire to help them with a nightmare by trying to teach him lucid dreaming...to become the master of the dreams and then use that as a tool for learning in life, to practice, expirement... the pain in the dream world is not permanent. Then he reassures them that he'll always be watching over them, helping them through and reminds them he'll always be right beside them smiling. Just an absolutely beautiful story. The only real disconcerning thing to me is the distincly different voice that says, "Help Me!" at the end of the verse sung by that distorted voice. That's a bit unnerving. The voice is telling us how to achieve lucid dream/dream control and at the end what sounds like a young girl pops out of nowhere and says, "Help me!". Was this his daughter? What the heck was that all about?
The official video for "Eyes of a Stranger" would be a great follow-up tune to experience his other vocal side. Then yes, if still interested listen to the live version of Take Hold of the Flame.
Queensryche was one of the best rock shows I've seen. They played all of the songs from both Operation Mindcrime (it came with its own anime) and their new album, Empire, that includes, "Silent Lucidity." It was a fantastic performance from an amazing band. If you have ever sat on the edge of a child's bed after they have had a bad dream and you are there to comfort them and watch over them, you know all about silent lucidity, or at least near lucidity depending on how long the day has been.
Trust me... Bevor reacting to Queensryche - Take hold of the Flame and Suite Sister Mary, do I Will Remember first! From their MTV Unplugged session! Thank me later... ^^
Hi there. First time viewer here and a huge Queensryche fan if my screen name is any indication. I love that you listened to this one first because Geoff is a force of nature and if you dig into more of their material, I think you'll end up being amazed by his range and ability. As a band, their musicianship, songwriting and storytelling abilities are second to none. The band is providing the harmonies in the chorus with Chris DeGarmo (beginning/ending acoustic and lead guitar) on the higher end. The other commenters are spot on with recommending Take Hold of the Flame next. Gonna Get Close To You is another example of his dark and creepy vocal. Operation Mindcrime is one of the best concept albums ever written, so I'd try Revolution Calling, Suite Sister Mary, I Don't Believe in Love, or Eyes of a Stranger. Man, so many more great songs, but I'll stop there. :)
I love watching people’s first reaction to this amazing piece! It f you check out Take Hold of the Flame, your mind will be blown at the breadth of his range!
From the first time I heard this on the radio back in '90 I always thought that chaotic jumble of words and phrases was alluding to the state of subconscious mind just before you enter REM sleep. With my brain working overtime processing the present, past and future without me having to think about it. Then you get that chorus of peaceful thoughts which helps dreams manifest. Having that explained (to me at least) in a song, was absolutely amazing. Another great reaction Jen
Listen to the end again and listen for the GENIUS of the string part playing the lullaby song. Master class placement. I weep to what has happened to music since masterpieces like this.
"Operation: LiveCrime" by Queensryche, concert of the album "Operation: Mindcrime" will blow your mind! A close friend of mine was "scared" of the music I listened to but this song, Silent Lucidity, she loved. C. Webb RIP 01/01/97. Forever her song. "If you persist in your efforts you can achieve a dream come true!" Geoff's voice on "Someone Else" is unforgettable!!
In the 3rd verse, when he says, "...walls come tumbling down," there's a very soft drum fill that sounds like a brick falling, reinforcing that lyric. I've never seen anyone reacting to this video catch it.
Geoff Tate can take you from the bottom of the deepest ocean up to the seventh sky above with his voice in just one song. Try ''Take hold of the flame'' live in Tokyo 1984.
Take Hold of the Flame live in Tokyo 1984. Eyes of a stranger shows his beautiful vibrato and anything MTV unplugged because its all unbelievably amazing ❤ x
You have just heard an INCREDIBLY GREAT band and singer! Geoff is a baritone, but also sings really high, and can belt like no one else! He has power, control, magnificent tone, vibrato, and intensity! As everyone is suggesting, PLEASE listen to a song off their first LP called "Take Hold of the Flame" LIVE in Tokyo 1984! Geoff hits three E5's, the second one being a PERFECT note! They are such a versatile and accomplished band in every sense. I would say just go over and listen to Take Hold just for yourself, BUT, I think you should do a reaction video on it, 'cos you're going to react all right, and I'd like to see it when you do. 😆 I enjoyed hearing uour thoughts and observations about Geoff's vocals! And would love to hear MORE!
I love Geoff tate’s voice but I think the back-up harmonies often get overlooked which is a shame because they are so good! Also, really interesting and experimental composition sets queensryche apart from their peers.
Geoff Tate's opera coach was Maestro David Kyle. He's responsible for a lot of Geoff's vocal acrobatics. Maestro David Kyle also coached Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, and Anne Wilson, among many others.
Take Hold of the Flame live to hear the other part of his voice.
Yep, a good one 👍
Yes, an absolute must for a full taste of Geoff’s range plus he’s doing it live.
Yes please, Take hold of the flame so we can listen to his other half of vocal range
what they said
Yeah you need to do this!!!
Take 'hold of the flame' in Tokyo will show you a whole other side of his voice.
Yes, the Live in Tokyo is a must
Backing up this one. Don't make the mistake of avoiding the live in Tokyo 84.
Then. After take hold of the flame, I suggest EMPIRE, then even if you don't react to it the whole od OPERATION MIND CRIME is arguably the greatest concept album ever made.
Indeed
Back then, incredible songs like this were coming out all the time. We had no clue how lucky we were.
But we all had to pay money for it. Now everything is free crap or no crap.
Hahaha we just expected it it seems. Not till looking back know that we realize how lucky we truly were.❤
@ThelSuperlKing I mean. We had the radio and blank tapes so, we recorded it lol. I had so many radio tapes it wasn't funny . Then having that one friend who had the dual cassette and we'd all copy each other's tapes they bought while we all child or threw the football/played basketball
You should absolutely follow up with Take Hold of the Flame [Queensrÿche - Live in Tokyo 1984/08/05] to hear Geoff's full range.
"Eye's of a Stranger" or anything from the album "Operation:Mindcrime" would be a great folow up!
I'd say "Speak", just for the spoken parts.
I believe he had a 4 octave range.
Ah thank you for the information ☺️
He’s still sounds the same!
Thanks! Next will be “Hold of the Flame” live… 🤘
Geoff has a very dark speaking voice. The first verse is very close to his normal voice.
And then he just goes up from there! One of the best rock voices of all time.
I also love the chorus voices. They start in harmony and splits with one going up,

Fun note is that Empire, the album this is from, was produced to be listened to with headphones which is why there are those fun auditory adds. When the debuted the album in Seattle, all attendees received a set to listen to.
that was promised land..
i have video of it ..at boeing
@@QnRyche yep. Promise Land
The strings at the end plays the Brahms Lullaby. Amazing song
Great reaction! Would recommend "Take Hold of the Flame" live in Tokyo or anything off of the Operation: Mindcrime album 👍
That was Brahms' Lullaby, composed in 1869, played on the cello at the end of the song.
The geniuses of their music genre. Queensryche’s music will stand the test of time, like all great bands/artists. The best orchestration in any rock/metal song ever. Hauntingly beautiful!
One of the most gorgeous songs from the Rock world - ever.
Take Hold of the Flame live in Tokyo 1984 is the best live version. Studio is also great. Great song on the other spectrum of Geoff's voice. Love to hear it. It sticks w/ you.
Blow your mind... Take Hold of the Flame [Queensrÿche - Live in Tokyo 1984/08/05]
Agreed, Take Hold of the Flame!
I can't get technical about his singing, but I do know enough to be able to say this is simply one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I would also recommend Take Hold Of The Flame. The two songs together show off nearly his full range.
Take Hold of the Flame (live in Tokyo 1984) has already been mentioned, but another live performance I enjoy is I Will Remember, which they did on MTV's Unplugged series.
Killing words from that performance is also stellar
Great recommendation! "I Will Remember" from the unplugged set is amazing!!
Love the description!

This song is a fairly modern masterpiece. One of my favorite songs of all time. Tate is an incredible storyteller.
Now hear the power in Geoff's voice in .... "Eyes of a Stranger"..... official video
The guitarist Chris Degarmo wrote this for his son who was having nightmares.
Anybody else remember him doing "Scarborough Fair"? That still haunts my memory. Granted, not "Take Hold of the Flame", but still such a display of Geoff's talent.
Yes indeed. Haunting and lovely
Acoustic version of "Eyes of a Stranger" is awesome....while he's holding a cup of coffee 😁
My favorite is “ Suite Sister Mary “ .. so underrated
The strings at the end are playing a variation of Brahms Lullaby
Queensryche was really lucky to get Micheal Kamen on the string arrangement.
this is my 1991 and gives me all the feels. thank you for this. Welcome to the dichotomy of Queensryche
Same here, great association with my last year of high school. Beautiful tunes of the 80s and 90s.
You NEED to listen to their Unplugged session, songs like I Will Remember, The Killing Words or The Lady Wore Black, absolutely amazing!
Shout out to Chris Degarmo who wrote the song. For more of this side of Geoff's voice check out their MTV Unplugged show, especially The Killing Words and Scarborough Fair.

Followers who recommend Silent Lucidity first to vocal channels know exactly what they’re setting her up for…and that is correct
Geoff's power, range, tone, expression and high vibrato is unmatched IMO!
Great reaction, btw!
Great reaction, Jennifer... Geoff Tate is one of Julia Nilon's favorite singers and she introduced him to Fairy Voice Mother... if you want to be further mind-blown, please react to Take Hold of the Flame, live in Tokyo.
I do not believe she expected this. Love it.
Don’t get used to this laid back, mellow sound. Queensryche is a hard rock band, and Geoff has the vocals to match. I’d suggest Jet City Woman, or anything off Operation Mindcrime
Jet City Woman, Eyes of a Stranger and Another Rainy Night. Or, as you said, any song off of Operation: Mindcrime. Can’t go wrong.
Take hold of the flame, Tokyo. Then, eyes of a stranger
For all the wonderful things that can be said about the band - that song's true master class is the orchestration by the late great Michael Kaman.
That song does that to everyone who has any emotion at all. It really tugs the ol heart strings ,Great job !😊😊
Jennifer! I'm new to Queensryche as well so this is a new journey. I have to say this song makes me think of my younger days and Pink Floyd. You’ve only scratched the surface of this man’s voice.
we can use a lot of words to describe this song.............or just one............ MASTERPIECE!
Was gonna say this. Masterpiece for sure.
Thank you for your natural reactions. They are captivating! ❤
If you watch Take Hold of the Flame (Live in Tokyo 1984) , have the lyrics up. It's an amazing live performance, but the quality being 40 years old some of the words aren't as clear. But the E5s are!
Not the best of ideas to somewhat spoil things for her, in my opinion. It lessens the surprise factor by knowing what to expect.
Jet City Woman's real good from the Empire album
So are Another Rainy Night and Anybody Listening.
I think his not singing "in Silent Lucidity" at the end, when you're expecting it, makes it very powerful, because you can hear it in your head.
Jennifer, the cello at the end is Braham's lullaby. Kinda subtle and seems to go unnoticed. :)
Check out Eyes Of The Stranger by them!
Let us please not jump directly to Take Hold of the Flame, there are so many other great songs from this band! I'd love to see Jet City Woman, no one ever gets to that song because they end up going straight to Take Hold...
I've never thought of the song as sad. Check out
Queensryche - Anybody Listening
The official video for "Eyes of a Stranger" would be a great follow-up tune to experience his other vocal side. Then yes, if still interested listen to the live version of Take Hold of the Flame.
Was lucky enough to be a fan starting in the mid 80s and first saw them live in 88. One of the best all-around bands ever.
The strings at the end are playing Brahm's Lullaby behind DeGarmo's acoustic guitar.
Trust me...
Bevor reacting to Queensryche - Take hold of the Flame and Suite Sister Mary, do I Will Remember first!
From their MTV Unplugged session!
Thank me later... ^^
Geoff Tate has a range from B3 to E5 😊. Check out more queensrÿche!
I loved your reaction- so real and sincere.
Thanks Jenn! Great job!😊
when he says visualize your dreams in the present tense and so forth," he's talking about lucid dreaming. Cheers
Looked at that double neck electric guitar and that fr3kin awesome tama drum kit with the founder the drummer scott rockinfield
Definitely "Take Hold of the Flame" live from Tokyo!!!
Take Hold of the Flame AND Eyes of a Stranger.
Listen to the end again and listen for the GENIUS of the string part playing the lullaby song. Master class placement. I weep to what has happened to music since masterpieces like this.
Glad you liked
... and now waiting for the Jen acoustic cover version.
😁😁
"Operation: LiveCrime" by Queensryche, concert of the album "Operation: Mindcrime" will blow your mind! A close friend of mine was "scared" of the music I listened to but this song, Silent Lucidity, she loved. C. Webb RIP 01/01/97. Forever her song. "If you persist in your efforts you can achieve a dream come true!" Geoff's voice on "Someone Else" is unforgettable!!
Hi Jennifer hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
I can’t hear this song without a tear in my eye. So much life and feeling!
In the 3rd verse, when he says, "...walls come tumbling down," there's a very soft drum fill that sounds like a brick falling, reinforcing that lyric. I've never seen anyone reacting to this video catch it.
Thanks Jen 😊
😁
The song is about having a lucid dream. Geoff Tate is my favorite Metal Singer.
Unplugged on MTV! Pick any song you will not be disappointed. Your welcome
I saw them open for Ozzie (last century). They sounded great live. You must do "Take hold of the flame" (Tokyo) Love your inputs..cheers
Geoff Tate can take you from the bottom of the deepest ocean up to the seventh sky above with his voice in just one song. Try ''Take hold of the flame'' live in Tokyo 1984.
I can't wait for you to find the group Steelheart ~ She's Gone!
You will absolutely love what that vocalist is able to do
You have to check out his tenor side on their song Take Hold Of The Flame. Operatic rock singer with an amazing range and voice.
Take Hold of the Flame live in Tokyo 1984. Eyes of a stranger shows his beautiful vibrato and anything MTV unplugged because its all unbelievably amazing ❤ x
A baritone that could sing in the higher registers better than most of the tenors from that era. Truly one of the best
Geoff did sing along to the track in their "produced" music videos. So what you see him do is how he sings it.👍🏽😁
You have just heard an INCREDIBLY GREAT band and singer!
I enjoyed hearing uour thoughts and observations about Geoff's vocals! And would love to hear MORE!
This was my late wife's favorite song. I had it played while sending a Chinese balloon to the sky. RIP my love😢
Wonderful analysis, Jen, thank you for one more great video.. 🌺
"Operation: Mindcrime" is the best concept album ever created. And it's a shame that so few know about them, or Geoff.
Queen Of The Ryche is my absolute favorite song by Queensryche and someone really needs to react to it. Geoff is spectacular in that song
