I actually really like the visual of North's hair blowing around wildly when he's angry. It's pretty neat and I respect the effort that had to have gone into animating the individual curls. Kind of wish we got a bit more spectacle when he goes ham with his powers during the climax.
"The Year W/O a Santa Claus" had just enough of the Miser Bros. to make you wish for more. The trouble is that if you give a unique character too much screen time, they cease to be special. Think about Kramer from "Seinfeld" having a TV series with him as the main character. It'd be too much. That's why some spinoffs don't work. Flo from "Alice" got her own show. It failed. The Ropers left "Three's Company" and their spinoff failed, too. That's why "The Miser Bros. Christmas" fell flat.

Even if you did do something more with them, you’d have to be VERY careful with their characterizations and really have to go beyond their basic personalities in order for it to not feel annoying. I have a feeling that the people involved in this special didn’t really get that and kind of just… y’know butchered them (and their cold and hot puns weren’t even that funny compared to the original). Regardless though, even if I’m a huge fan of the Misers, there’s a reason why R/B didn’t use them a lot in the original special (I mean hell they literally say they’re “too much”.) But even so id love to make a rewrite for this special one day, giving it the same feeling as if R/B did it themselves. It definitely won’t be a masterpiece but it’ll at least be entertaining lmao

If I had to guess the reason for its popularity in the 2000s was simply companies realizing they can market off people's love and nostalgia for the Rankin/Bass specials. That decade was essentially the golden age of merch for them, with the main five getting loads of figure sets, ornaments, and collectibles as opposed to nowadays where you’ll only see Rudolph and Frosty merch.

The character designs always looked just *slightly off* to me. They're like imposters, it's uncanny. They're just on-model enough that you FEEL something is off, but you know they're wrong. It's just hard to pinpoint HOW.
Is this movie perfect? No. But, was it nice to see the best characters from "A Year Without A Santa Claus" be given their own movie? Yes. While it's got it's flaws, it's still wonderful to see this duo again.

I actually remember watching this special on ABC Family when it first aired! I was 8 years old then! The Year Without a Santa Claus has always been one of my favorites from Rankin/Bass and I inevitably loved this one too as a kid due to how much I loved the Miser Brothers, but now, looking back on it as an adult, I can definitely see how lackluster the writing and songs are. And I always had a problem with the weird character designs and redesigns, even as a kid. ESPECIALLY Snow Miser. YEESH. Despite all that I do admire how they put a lot of effort into most of the other aspects of this special. MAJOR props to them for doing the special almost entirely in stop-motion as a tribute to the original Rankin/Bass specials, and for getting Mickey Rooney and George S Irving to reprise their roles of Santa Claus and Heat Miser! I think Irving did really well considering that he was 86 at the time, and he definitely sounded like he had a lot of fun voicing Mr Green Christmas again! I love your content already and am looking forward to seeing more from your channel! Merry belated Christmas and Happy New Year!
Growing up I never saw this movie however almost every year they made the kids in school do a "Christmas play" (it never had a plot and was just a mashup of popular Christmas songs sung by out of tune elementary kids) I cant remember a year that they DIDNT include the misers song. Didn't know it was a movie I always just thought it was a goofy little song about 'the seasons'. I love love love youtube docs and reviews and i'm super excited to see more from you.
Something about the Animation in how it moves is Both good and Weird to me. It kinda feels like a High profile Robot Chicken Sketch. Also New Subscriber.
The stop motion in this special reminds me of another holiday special called Holidaze: The Christmas That Almost Didn’t Happen. Except in that one the characters didn’t look. They looked weird, but they had more charm to them I think.

Paul Coker Jr. did the original designs for those Rankin Bass TV specials and the Japanese company that sculpted them did a beautiful job of bringing them to life. All these new designs look watered down and uninspired.

I love his designs for these specials and the Japanese sculptors did a wonderful job bringing them to life (even if he did admit in a newspaper interview that they sometimes didn’t translate his designs accurately, but he didn’t mind regardless). Changing up Paul’s designs this dramatically feels… weird to me. The fact that they even changed up Snow’s facial structure bothers me to no end because everything about the Misers’ appearances are supposed to oppose each other, including their default expressions. Here they basically messed it up and…. Yeah ew.

Of COURSE I latched onto the Miser Bros immediately because I was a weird little kid. Over the years sites like Tumblr and the like showed up and "Tumblr sexymen" became a thing. I was around for early Tumblr and even then there was a Rankin Bass fandom. Little note ... Jack Frost from Frosty's Winter Wonderland is also seen as a "sexyman" by the fandom. But anyway, I ended up HATING the special. It let me down in every way. The designs sucked and ... WHY ... OH WHYYYYYY did the North Wind have to exist. He literally looks like a Lord Barkis rip off and he annoyed the hell outta me. The special made me so mad ... I never watched it again after it premiered that year.

A putrid example: Little Drummer Boy leaves out the baby cry that alerts Aaron to Baby Jesus's presence. As a result, in all but the original version he just turns around mid-argument and is like "😮 a baby!!" Tery may be talking about a 2nd butchering taking place, though

Btw, have you heard about Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas (which is a stop motion animated special adaptation that was based on both the 2003 movie and the Broadway musical) and How Murray Saved Christmas (where Jerry Stiller voiced the titular character who works at a diner and became Santa Claus)? Both of them aired on NBC in 2014 (I feel like no one talks about it, not even SaberSpark or LS Mark of all people).
I’ve heard about the stop motion ELF special (mainly because I saw it in a DVD bundle with funnily enough AMBC and TYWASC) but never actually watched it lol. The other one I may have heard of as well but never watched it either. I have a nostalgic soft spot for this special, but I don't think I would ever defend it fully lmao. Even as a kid though I remember hating how much they changed Mrs. Claus from the og special (the design, the personality, the voice, the charm-they massacred my girl), and yeah don't like the Snow Miser and Mother Nature changes either. Although I kinda love how lame and stupid North Wind is lol.
I caught this when it premiered. "Year Without a Santa Claus" was one of my favorites growing up with the Miser Brothers, particularly Snow, being my favorite characters. I really did not care for this special at all. The characterization of the brothers (especially Snow) just felt so off, it was fine for them to just be brothers who absolutely hated each other and didn't need to "get along", and did not care at all for the weird Jay Leno looking villain. Not to mention the songs. Yeah, I just... did not care for this at all. But it was certainly a lot better than the 2006 live action movie. Hoo boy.

@@sky0kast0 depending on what the bundle is, it’s probably because AMBC is not an official Rankin/Bass production. It didn’t involve any of the original people that made the production other then a couple of the original voice actors. So that’s most definitely why it’s not in the R/B Christmas Collection
To be honest, as flawed as this special is, I would watch it over most of Rankin/Bass’ mediocre, more obscure content any day. Some of their specials like Rudolph’s Shiny New Year, Rudolph & Frosty’s Christmas in July, and The Little Drummer Boy Book II are absolute energy-drainers.
Out of all Rankin/Bass sequels not made by then this one is most decent because the Legend of Frosty the Snowman Rudolph & the Island of Misfit Toys and Here Comes Peter Cottontail The Movie.
I recall seeing this in December 2009 and mostly finding it boring. I forgot it existed until now and I see why it’s something I would never watch again. This is a good video about it though.

I have a nostalgic soft spot for this special, but I don't think I would ever defend it fully lmao. Even as a kid though I remember hating how much they changed Mrs. Claus from the og special (the design, the personality, the voice, the charm-they massacred my girl), and yeah don't like the Snow Miser and Mother Nature changes either. Although I kinda love how lame and stupid North Wind is lol.

I caught this when it premiered. "Year Without a Santa Claus" was one of my favorites growing up with the Miser Brothers, particularly Snow, being my favorite characters. I really did not care for this special at all. The characterization of the brothers (especially Snow) just felt so off, it was fine for them to just be brothers who absolutely hated each other and didn't need to "get along", and did not care at all for the weird Jay Leno looking villain. Not to mention the songs. Yeah, I just... did not care for this at all. But it was certainly a lot better than the 2006 live action movie. Hoo boy.

@ yeah I just found this out. My apologies I kind of just thought that it aired once because it was an ABC Family original and kind of figured that they would only show it on cable one time. Thanks to a mutual I found out that this isn’t the case. I’ll probably put a correction comment for this.
The Year Without a Santa Claus and Santa Claus is Comin' To Town are my favorite Rankin-Bass Christmas movies.
It's kind of funny that it doesn't exist in the Christmas collection that I have because it is one of those projects but apparently it's not stop motion enough for the rest of them

@@sky0kast0 depending on what the bundle is, it’s probably because AMBC is not an official Rankin/Bass production. It didn’t involve any of the original people that made the production other then a couple of the original voice actors. So that’s most definitely why it’s not in the R/B Christmas Collection

To be honest, as flawed as this special is, I would watch it over most of Rankin/Bass’ mediocre, more obscure content any day. Some of their specials like Rudolph’s Shiny New Year, Rudolph & Frosty’s Christmas in July, and The Little Drummer Boy Book II are absolute energy-drainers.

Out of all Rankin/Bass sequels not made by then this one is most decent because the Legend of Frosty the Snowman Rudolph & the Island of Misfit Toys and Here Comes Peter Cottontail The Movie.
