The funny thing is the scene where Santa explains to Candy why he didn’t choose her to be Santa is a very through and logical argument for why he chose the way he did and might have actually been a good twist that maybe, just maybe, might have actually saved the show a bit. And then Candy completely disregards it.
If she then looked back at all the horrible things that she did and reevaluated the real source of her frustration (the actual policies in place, rather than the appearance of its figurehead) this would have become a masterful and scarily accurate character study.
Candy realising she's the piece of crap she is and working to be better after that point could have 180'd it into something potentially entertaining. Then again, trying to watch the prior episodes of "men bad let's assault them and use buzzwords" just wouldn't be worth it
That could've been the one redeeming scene. If the show only was leading you to believe that's where it's going to go with the whole political bent, but then it turns out, to be a realistic message that, people who move up in companies tend to be those who have good communication and social skills. But they refused to go with that, while ironically undermining their own message by turning into basically Candy's entire point being she should get the job simply because she wants it, so she deserves it.
Honestly, if Santa fired her for telling him "f*ck you" after offering her a better job and she came back for revenge, hat would be a better story. Predictable, but still better than how this turned out.
By that scene alone I am fully convinced that this show was conceived to create controversy. That scene was either the writers flipping the viewer off or they added that to further anger people. There is simply no way this was a genuine attempt to create a feminist show.
I agree. Most of the western adult cartoons feel the same. With the same style and tone. And they all are so mean-spirited, raunchy, lowbrow, and dumb for no reason. Like sure kids media can be lowbrow and dumb but I feel like there are a lot more good kids cartoons and anime in general than there are adult western cartoons. They at least feel different in some capacity and not just raunchy and mean-spirited for the sake of it.
That's because most adult animated shows think they can substitute clever writing with saying swear words, and explicit sex and violence. It's what Family Guy devolved into and South Park (mostly) grew out of. Where the social commentary took predecence with South Park, and Family Guy devolved into the template for most edgy adult cartoons.

Honestly, that would be a fun premise for a movie or short if put in the right hands. Maybe Santa gets sick, hurt, or burned out and Mrs Claus is tasked with delivering presents. Maybe she has trouble at first trying to take Santa's role and preparing for the big day, but with the help of her friends and never ending support from her husband, she delivers the presents to all the children in the world. No woke and political garbage or anything, just a simple and charming (and maybe perhaps comedic) story.
There's a family film called Mrs Claus starring Angela Lansbury which oddly enough deals with most of the same issues brought up in this mess of a SerIEs.
Honestly, people greatly underrate the ability of children to comprehend complex things. Probably because they just aren't good at explaining them. It strikes me as absurd that some people think they can just get away with creating the most simplistic and brainless garbage and get away with it because it's for kids. That's how you get simplistic and brainless adults. But the truth is that they don't make this crap because kids can't handle intelligent entertainment, they do it because they can get away with it, because the kids often don't know any better. So really, they're preying on kids when they should be teaching and entertaining them.
The biggest problem with Santa inc is that the entire concept of the show should be letting us root against Santa but after his genuine talk and reason why the mc isn’t getting the position while also giving her an arguably better role he is instantly humanized. Which only makes our mc more unlikeable and her motivations even more flawed due to being a horrible person the entire show.
If someone else had the concept, maybe it could be funny instead of painful and condescending - it's a hard one to pull off but I think someone could. These people just aren't as clever or interesting as they think they are lmao

That's part of the (many) problems. She's meant to be an undervalued hardworking woman, but acts like a vindictive, spiteful, petty bully, even when someone doesn't deserve it, and wonders why people don't seem to like her. She doesn't believe in the role of Santa, but she doesn't want anyone else to have it, all to satisfy her own ego.
Yeah. That show was mind bendingly good and I did also like Rick and Morty. But the difference in greatness isn't really quantified. Bojack was profound while Rick and Morty was just sometimes silly, sometimes clever. (I guess that is quantifiable then...) but whatever this show is right here... It's so bad I can't even keep my face in born neutrality. Almost every time a clip was paid I found myself intensely frowning.

South Park is the OG. Family Guy followed 2 years after. Bojack is well over a decade after them. But it definitely has the best drama for an adult cartoon.

@@stuglife5514 The Imperium is ironically quite inclusive of humans, with their society being largely post-racial and there being no real restrictions on who can become what based on sex or ethnicity* (besides space marines, which isn't an enforced refusal to accept women but simply because it's not possible to make work, and sisters of battle which is literally all-woman because it's exploiting a loophole). This doesn't change the fact that they're EXTREMELY elitist, repressive, and hateful of anything which deviates from the state religion or their picture of humanity, so mutants are fucked and xenos are SUPER fucked. *in general. Feudal hellhole that the Imperium is, different planets have different standards. Some are egalitarian, others not so much. Some have their own racial prejudices separate from fears of mutation, some have sexism, etc.
The worst part about any of these “topical issues” shows is that they don’t do anything with these observations: they just say them and let them sit there and expect you to find it funny because “relatable”. They don’t offer any solutions or ways in which these issues can be fixed or solved nor do they actually derive humor from the situations.
To be fair, we as a society haven't figured it out yet. Doesn't excuse bad writing, only emphasizing how hard it is to write something good for a mainstream audience that's actually thought provoking.
Also these “topical issues” will date the show like hell, at least when something like South Park does topical issues they aren’t fucking attacking one side, they go after both
Because they don't have anything to say. There's no actual message. They don't have a point. All they want is to be praised for how "correct" they are. There aren't even unique observations. No substance.
It's funny how shows made for kids like Kim Possible, Powerpuff Girls, Etc are able to present the creator's views on certain issues in a subtle way that leaves it up to the viewer to decide what they think. While a large part of recent shows made for adults really feel like they need to beat everyone over the head with their views on current issues.
What's funny is how the show is trying to be progressive but uses every black and gay stereotype in the book to pass as comedy. You can't have your cake and and eat it too.
It reminds me of Seth MacFarlene’s comedy. He’s said several times he’s in favor gay rights, but his almost every gay character in his shows are one-dimensional stereotypes.
It works a lot better when you have black and gay writers on staff writing from their own lived experience. See also: Q-Force (I promise you the trailers are horrendously misleading and it’s a waaaaaay better series than the trailers lead one to believe)
On the other hand, South Park of all things handles characters with these traits well in recent years and ironically (given its reputation) has become much better at being progressive than most shows that try to be as a result. Despite some characters being based on tropes/stereotypes, there's usually much more to them as characters aside from that and they feel like actual people as opposed to just caricatures as a result. A good example is Token Black who despite being a spoof on 'the black guy' as his name suggests, has many others layers to his character and also contradicts a lot of black stereotypes to the point where he's almost the complete opposite. They also handled Tweek and Craig well too since they didn't slap gay stereotypes on them when they hooked up and handled the subject maturely and realistically.
Honestly, I actually like the joke at 20:00. Walrus guy makes a regular mistake at a golf court, Candy tries to be a snarky asshole about it, and to her surprise, instead of lashing out or ignoring the question, the walrus gives her an honest response, not realizing that she was just trying to be an asshole. I like this joke because of walrus guy's cluelessness and because Candy gets what she deserves for being the asshole she is. Though I might see too much into it.
It is so much worse than the main character simply running over a sapient reindeer and leaving him to die, No no no. She runs him over, gets out of the car acknowledges him and his situation than calls him what was established as a RACIAL SLUR toward reindeer than drives off and leaves him to die. She literally makes an accident into a second degree manslaughter and a hate crime! Or hero folks! Yet they somehow wonder why people hated this show.
Oh wow, this went from really bad to worse..... If you take a great adult animated show, Bojack horseman, the titular character does pretty awful things. These are acknowledged though. They're not anecdotal (hope I'm using that word right). They come back to bite him. There can be a good blend of humor and dark subjects but this ain't it.
@@azuki_Owell that and when BH does horrible things to others it is usually as a direct reaction to a wrong done onto him with most of his really bad actions being primarily self destructive ways of dealing with stress. This keeps him very likable because we get where he is coming from and he mostly only hurts himself. At least he thinks he does until he sobers up the next day and realizes how he dragged everyone down with him. Which leads to the next self destructive spiral. Now there are times where this doesn’t apply and those are often the worst moments of the show. However even then if usually comes from a place of self preservation rather than malice. (Thinking specifically of how he ruined Todd’s rock opera out of er of losing his friend and the control he has over him)
Saying that it has "A touch of a feminist agenda" would be like saying that the movie 'God's Not Dead' has "A touch of an evangelical Christian agenda."
On the list of things wrong with this series, the fact that the main character was massive asshole is revealing. If this is the type of character the writers thought would be liked and well received, it says a lot about them.
And this is why, with most shitty propaganda pieces, I dislike the creators. Unlike, say, The Room, where the movie is shit, but I've got nothing against Tommy himself. If anything, the fact he tried is at least a little respectable.

Only very specific types of assholes are likeable as protagonists, and for me that's the everyday asshole. He's not some overly aggressive guy who insults people for the fun of it. He's the guy who is just living his life and ends up doing asshole things. Someone like Scott Pilgrim, he's not a great guy, but he's not the type of asshole Candy is.
@@SebasTian58323 I think the most important aspect is that the writers recognize the character is in the wrong. How much of an arc they go through, or how justifiable that is, can vary from character to character. Scott is recognized as someone who needs to grow up, and he only gains self respect once he apologizes for his fuck ups. He's not portrayed as a good person, even if he's a very relatable one for many people. I'd compare this to Rick and Morty. We're rarely supposed to cheer Rick on, he's clearly a psychopath, and a lot of his victims have a degree of nuance to them. While in Santa Inc., we're supposed to be rooting for someone who's just a really shitty person, because all her victims are 2 dimensional strawmen. (Also: "They're good because their opponent's are bad" is an awful argument. Stalin wasn't a hero for fighting Hitler, and vice versa.)
The thing that I don't get is... if you want to make a story about a female or jewish Santa Claus so badly, do you even need the whole men vs. women thing... like at all? You could easily focus on having to deal with the expectations towards the role of Santa and who Santa is on their own. You don't need an antagonist or strawman. Hell you could weave in a message about body positivity and christmas being open to anyone if you wanted just by playing off of how we imagine Santa and how hard it can be to live up to that. But most importantly *you wouldn't be going out of your way to piss people off.*
I think, the fact is, these shows aren't even really about morals that the author wants to share with the world. What they actually want, is to use the show as a platform to make themselves "right" about any debate they ever had, and "get back" at anyone whose ever wronged them.
I honestly think the best idea how to touch discrimination topics in that show would be if she was discriminated because.. of being an elf It still touches things like being disregarded because of how someone was born instead of who they are as a person and can work on many levels at the same time (it can fit sexism, racism and antisemitism) and isn't as straight forward to make it obnoxious

The thing about Santa being any of those things is that the race of Santa never mattered, he’s white because he’s based of the historical character st Nicholas, a white Christian man.
Because the PG rating forces them to be limited in what they can show. It actually forces them to be clever and creative. Thats why many of them have hidden jokes and stuff like that. Meanwhile if they didnt have these limitations they are unhinged and it could be too excessive. So the limitation PG actually has a benefit sometimes for these shows
The best way to put it, simply just having excessive swearing, sex jokes, gross-out jokes and shock bait just for sake of it doesn't make a particular movie/TV show more adult, if anything, it just makes it more childish, because the only target demographic that would get a massive kick out of it would be those who are too young to watch them.
It works kinda like with the swearing. A kid can swear too, but it will be cringy, a lot of unnecessary swearing feels annoying and there are old people saying old and mature thing not swearing at all

The concept of a female Santa done in stop-motion animation was already done almost 50 years ago with lovely characters, a real conflict, songs, and action. It was called "The Year Without a Santa Claus" and it was produced by Rankin-Bass, masters of the stop-motion Christmas movies, and it's not only genuinely fun and funny, it's timeless and yet timely. Mrs. Claus debates taking over for Santa when he gets sick and believes that nobody will miss him if he takes a vacation, and even Vixen (a deer, a female deer) gets involved in solving the problem. In short, this series was not needed. In any way.

Not stop motion but, 'Noelle' on Disney+ also does the female Santa thing but the main character doesn't become Santa because she's a woman and "it's about time" it's the culmination of her character development and because she's the best person for the job.
Well, she acts, talks and thinks like them, so of course she's funny and relatable! Kind of like the rom-coms where the old guy gets the young sexy girl, because he's a stand-in for the producers.

Besides the fact that the series is unfunny and just not good. Seth Rogen calling everyone who hated his series, "White Supremacists" just made me despise the series in general, along with him. Edit: "Bad Santa" did raunchy Christmas humor better and it still had more heart than this.
Rogen is another example of someone who has grown a massive ego after becoming famous with little talent. His entire career is basically "weed is cool, now listen to my unusual laugh". Now he thinks people should care about his opinions and politics

Following the unironically sexist lead female character in this show, I'm convinced that most aren't arguing their politics, they're arguing what they're hoping are the audience's politics so they can get their "and then everyone clapped" ending without having to put in any legitimate work.
As an animatior myself, I cannot imagine how disappointed the animators on this project must feel. They obviously worked hard to produce high-quality models and animation (far better than this show deserved), and all that hard work is for what? Irrepirably having their names on one of the worst- recived pieces of media of all time. Must be just devastating for them.
I feel like they should have been given the right to strip their names off the record as compensation It's really sad when movies that are overall bad have 1 or 2 aspects that were done incredibly well, probably because if the team behind it is big enough there's obviously going to be at least 1 person who gives a crap about what they are making and genuinely wants to do something good with what they got, sorta like how every school group project has 1 slacker and 1 productive person in general
Seriously! I was just thinking that too! Stop motion gigs are far and few between and very few studios still work in that medium, or have consistent work, so this show must have just broken every one of the animators. They deserved better.

When Santa told Candy she could literally be the CEO while someone else was the face of Christmas while she was the actual boss, just for her to meet that with a “Go fuck your self”, really confused the shit out of me.
"I can't make you the actual face because your not good with kids, but literally every other aspect of the job, the part you actually want including things like pay, that's all yours." "How dare you give me what I want."
I think it's a case of the misapplication of a solid trope common to stories with this basic theme. That kind of offer *would* be insulting in so many stories. If the reasoning was "we can't have a *Jewish* , *woman* Santa, but we'll let you run it while a white man gets the credit", then "Go fuck yourself" would have been an entirely valid response! It's a trope in media about people breaking barriers: the offer that acknowledges and wants to exploit their talent but still uphold the prejudice. And it rightly gets shut down by the protagonist, to hammer home the message that can't have it both ways: You don't get to benefit from marginalised people's legitimate skills and talent while actively upholding the unjust system that denies it. But in *this* case, she was simply bad at being The Face. Not because she was a woman, nor because she was Jewish, but because she was *bad with kids* . Which is kinda a big deal for Santa. Which made the offer entirely reasonable *and to her own benefit* . Which means telling Santa to go fuck himself no longer reads as a Brave Stand Against Injustice, but rather it feels like childish petulance.
Actually "I always regretted never being in the war. Legal murder is the shit" made me laugh, but as you said it's only because it was unpredictable of the character to say something that wasn't meant to be stereotypical or dirty joke

All this, and the fact she’s not a tragic character who either redeems herself or simply just takes the big fall, honestly makes her the absolute WORST protagonist in the history of fiction! So full of hate, so full of anger, obnoxious and unfunny, selfish to an irrational level, such a pretentious victim, and yet the writers think she’s just a misunderstood savior? No one is that naïve!
Everyone has said it before, the entire show is a trainwreck and the one character you're supposed to hate is the most likeable and most reasonable. They spent the majority of the show on their soapbox pushing social politics without making the characters likeable at all while setting it during a time when people forget their differences and come together during the festive season. Then there's "that scene" which made Santa come across as a genuinely reasonable person and was willing to give Candy the most important job in the business, but because it wasn't front and centre she let her ego get in the way.

Seriously, think of ANY Big Anime, Film, Manga, that was good and ask yourself what the Premisse is in easy words. The objective fact is that there is no Story-Premisse/Plot that ‚has to fail’. There is no such thing. I’m not even trying to motivate more people to start writing stories (even though i wished more people would) but just wanna say that Skill, Planning, Competence, this stuff can make ANYTHING work. well, originally it was a pagan holiday that was co-opted by christians and has since become a secular holiday that has extra meaning for christians. easter's the same thing. Halloween's similar, though while it was co-opted by christians it never really became a christian holiday, remaining more of a cultural holiday instead of a religious one and eventually skipping straight to secular

You know, that whole scene where Santa Claus calls Candy, not only he went out of his way to explain why he didn't chose her (mind you he doesn't have any obligation to do do), but he made so many valid points, you can't help but agree with him. Even awful writers can have a stroke of genius sometimes. And then they probably realized they were making too much sense that, to remedy that and don't contradict their message, Santa Is immediately revealed to be a total crook. It's more hilarious than anything In the show.

That whole "Santa-splain" scene feels like something that they would've done while they were just spitballing ideas to see what worked, complete with an incomplete punchline, but somehow they thought that was worthy of the final release

You have to love how the shows protagonist, the person who they want us to root for, is portrayed as a literal sociopath who has none of the qualities that would make them a good Santa Claus replacement like being good with children or being apart of the religion that actually practices Christmas.

For all its faults, If theres one thing I like about "santa inc" it's the character designs. I find Candy beautiful with her prominent hooked nose, curly hair and thick eyebrows.

Honestly, just looking at the visuals out of context, they don’t look that bad. Apart from the mouths that they added in post and the other flaws you mentioned, they pulled the stop-motion style off pretty well in my opinion. Some of the characters and set designs look cool. I’m sorry for the animators who had to work on this though. Imagine you invest countless hours and true passion for your craft into a series, and this is the final product.
The problem with these forced politics in shows, is that they just vaguely SAY why something is bad rather than show it. People are a lot more reasonable when they fully understand an issue, like with Santa's heart to heart, but the show would rather make their antagonists """evil""" and thus make any argument they impose invalid, because the evil man said it.
Exactly. When writing, it's important that you show, and you don't tell. Exposition should be used sparingly and only when it would be basically impossible to tell the story through anything else. There's certainly a lot more emotional response actually watching someone get hurt, rather than somebody bring it up afterwards. Like, imagine in return of the Jedi if C-3PO and R2-D2 were just talking about all the droids that were being tortured instead of you actually watching them get tortured, that entire threat would have had such little impact because you didn't actually get to see the horrors, you just heard about them second-hand from someone else.

As a Jew, my parents taught me about the holocaust when I was 5. They then brought me to the DC museum when I was 7. It was ingrained in my mind from a young age that it is not something to joke about, so I was pissed when this show did. This show might be a special kind of horrendous to me, but when a piece of media is politicized, people have a tendency to get their minds so winded up in their own politics they forget to actually critique the media. And sometimes the piece of media will end up living in people's heads for weeks, months, or even YEARS.
Agreed That's something that I really disliked about reviews of "high guardian spice" At first everyone was just "meh feminism bad, trans bad, woke sjws etc" but when Uniquenameosaurus did a honest review of it I actually learned a lot about how to do representation right, what kinds of pitfalls can ruin a show and how to make a good series set in a magical setting When queen serafina did a review of it I saw a lot of errors I missed on my first viewing And when Jamie de longe did her rewrite of moments in the show I finally saw the potential of the show on my screen All of these people could have just written off the series as "some sjw cash grab" which it was but instead of complaining and moving on they used it to provide knowledge and entertainment that overshadowed the original project
Name a single HGS review that DIDN’T critique the show fairly. Cause I’ve watched countless reviews of the show-by people of varying political standpoints-in both hour long review format and episode by episode analyses of the series, and not a single one of them ever claimed those things you said. In fact, they largely pointed out the fact that many white knights of this show will slander their criticisms with those very same blanket-level statements that you’ve stated. Just because the reviews point out the awful LGBT representation and the misandry of the writers doesn’t make their critiques invalid. The fact that 95% of them bring up the writing, animation, voice acting, characterization, world-building, plot development, etc. as the core flaws of the show really shows that you just wanted to use your politics as the basis as to why those reviewers are “wrong”. The people you named pointed out the same/similar problems with she show, but you zoned in on politics and diverted your attention away from the primary issues those “woke-despizing” reviewers had with the show. Off the top of my head, I can list at least 10 large names that have fairly criticized this show (in review/analysis format) [only checked up the channel names for some spelling/capitalization]: MangaKamen, dannphan, BlackLightJack, Just Stop, NECRO XIII, Manga Writer, Literature Devil, Anime America, NatalieXHunter, and Trumann. (Not sure why I listed these off, but I guess if you are gonna name-drop channels whose HGS reviews you didn’t despise, then I’ll do the same…)
I'm a feminist myself, yet...I don't stand with any of what these writers have to say. Just how I feel... if these shows actually cared about any of the things they claim, then they would make an effort to make their representation of issues....good? If you care about these issues than you should try to present it in a mature fashion. Instead we have cheap shots delivered with juvenile humor and making extreme caricatures of anyone with a different view point, that it self-sabotages it's own message. If these issues matter, treat them with respect.

Total Drama Island a children/ teen TV show had Lashawna the most stereotypical black woman ive ever seen in cartoons that I’ve watched and they somehow made her one of the best characters in the whole show. How tf did a cartoon show made for literal ADULTS fuck up such an easy character to make and give personality to? Literally one of the easiest stereotypes to write and they made it so cringey and unlikeable
Drawn Together's Foxxie Love is another good example of a character that is meant to be very stereotypical but is written in a way that makes you root for them.

Honestly I’d really like it if Santa seemed antagonistic and sexist when Candy is just an elf working there, but when she starts to try and work her way up snd they get to know each other she learns that he really isn’t that way, she just saw him that way because her position made her resent him. Also including another female character who had the potential to be Santa but was constantly snubbed or denied the role. In the end Candy helps her become the next Santa and she learns that even though she didn’t become Santa, she was able to inspire and help someone else to.
I’d absolutely love to see you review good films more in the future. Don’t box yourself into just slaughtering the shit in the world, it just drags you down and isn’t good for your soul. Reviewing good stuff is always better. Hope to see you back soon
Honestly if this movie was a little more self aware it could have been an amazing parody. The idea of someone who had valid reasons for not getting the job, and is over all a pretty terrible person but keeps blaming everyone else for their own short comings has potential, just look at bojack. The main character is a terrible, but it works. Especially with the idea of her killing people to get ahead. But they really wanted you to like the main character, and that's where it falls apart
I found it funny how much she hated that men had their own spaces where they do manly things but I never saw her once invite any guys to her wine parties with gal pals.

The worst part? Had the show stopped with the heart to heart scene of Santa explaining his reasoning it could have been good. That scene was perfect, like an actually really well written and scripted scene. Then they toss it aside. So yikes.
If they had decided not to do the whole "santa is actually a drug dealer so now she can blackmail him" thing, and instead made Candy have to come to terms with the fact that she didn't get the job, not because of her race or gender, but because she was a nasty person and wasn't the best for the job, then they could've actually salvaged this shit somewhat. Not as a comedy or anything, but they could've at least had a single worthwhile thing to say.
This show seems like one of those shows you'd find in a show if that makes sense. Like, something that's meant to make fun of shallow feminst Hollywood you'd find in GTA. If you want a good dark claymation Christmas special, check out Moral Orel's "Honor".
Should be a warning here that 'Honor' is the last episode in the series, and won't make sense/spoil pretty much the whole series if anyone tries to watch it without context lol. That said, I do recommend Moral Orel to anyone and everyone who'll listen, so it's worth it to watch the series just to get to the last episode
The fact that everything Seth Rogan has done since The Neighbors 2 has had a “feminist agenda” as he puts it, makes me believe that he has some god damn massive skeletons in his closet. Especially because of the fact that his old best friend, James Franco, was recently cancelled for sleeping with his acting students. James never tried to portray himself as an Uber feminist, so by modern Hollywood logic, he didn’t think that what he was doing was wrong. Which, by my guess, means that Seth must be doing some FAR worse sh*t, behind closed doors. Some Epstein stuff. He seems like the type.
That’s the thing though: these kinds of people aren’t really advocating for progress. They’re literally just complaining without doing anything for any legitimate cause. There’s a difference.

Tokyo godfathers managed to be a christmas themed story AND get its politics across without coming off as pandering and definitely without insulting people randomly (also the jokes actually landed)
What’s sad is that Sarah Silverman isn’t entirely bad at voice acting; she did an alright job voicing Vanellope in Wreck-It Ralph. But that role worked because Vanellope was meant to be a hyper little girl who appeared obnoxious at first but then revealed herself to be capable of more. Not just some random bitchy Karen (yeah, I went there) who had to make unnecessary gender-based insults against others.

Ya know what's funny about this show? It fails at the basic concept - not just in the ways he described, like 'Why does it have to be racist and sexist that all of the Santa's are male, white, and fat', but my bigger question is 'Wait, Santa gets replaced? Isn't it just one immortal guy? Santa Claus is a name, not a profession.' So like, even before the show's done anything, you already have something I'm instantly questioning.
I feel, in a good show, that Santa Claus being a title and not a name can be a neat concept. Like the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, whatever. It would be original and cool... If handled well. Unfortunately not the case here
I mean, that concept isn't really new. The Santa Clause and Earnest Saves Christmas covered that, to name a couple, and ESC even ended with a Black Santa! There was no uproar over it, as it's both Christmas, AND the Earnest Movies were funny and wholesome.
I will forever be convinced that people like Sara Silverman and Mindy Kaling actually do experience the workplace the way they portray, not because it’s actually that potent but because they go into it with bitterness and take everything men say with a grain of salt. Then, instead of realizing they’re just angry at society the way everyone is, they think all women with agree with and appreciate their point of view. I’ve had my own issues as a woman in the workplace, but I can tell you right now the proper way to handle it isn’t with more viciousness and aggression.
I applaud anyone who made through the entire season of this show. I only made it to episode 3 before I gave up. The toxic feminism throughout the show made all the profanity more frustrating. I’m so tired of other women wanting to “take down the patriarchy” when their ideas are no better than what the guys are doing. How is it better just because a woman is the jerk in charge now?

I find it kind of ironic that "adult" shows, especially comedies, lots of time have the most childish writing and humor ever. It tells a lot when cartoons aimed at kids/teenagers or independent creators are more mature than your show.
You know what would've been neat? If the MC realized how horrible her motivation for becoming Santa was and have her have an internal conflict over it. Maybe have her earn the position in the end, but she gives it up for black Santa, because she realizes that he is better suited for the job. The show has a good set up to make a discussion about the meaning of representation and how to implement it, to bad we didn't get that.

The funny thing is the scene where Santa explains to Candy why he didn’t choose her to be Santa is a very through and logical argument for why he chose the way he did and might have actually been a good twist that maybe, just maybe, might have actually saved the show a bit. And then Candy completely disregards it.
If she then looked back at all the horrible things that she did and reevaluated the real source of her frustration (the actual policies in place, rather than the appearance of its figurehead) this would have become a masterful and scarily accurate character study.
Candy realising she's the piece of crap she is and working to be better after that point could have 180'd it into something potentially entertaining. Then again, trying to watch the prior episodes of "men bad let's assault them and use buzzwords" just wouldn't be worth it
That could've been the one redeeming scene. If the show only was leading you to believe that's where it's going to go with the whole political bent, but then it turns out, to be a realistic message that, people who move up in companies tend to be those who have good communication and social skills. But they refused to go with that, while ironically undermining their own message by turning into basically Candy's entire point being she should get the job simply because she wants it, so she deserves it.
Honestly, if Santa fired her for telling him "f*ck you" after offering her a better job and she came back for revenge, hat would be a better story. Predictable, but still better than how this turned out.
By that scene alone I am fully convinced that this show was conceived to create controversy. That scene was either the writers flipping the viewer off or they added that to further anger people. There is simply no way this was a genuine attempt to create a feminist show.

I agree. Most of the western adult cartoons feel the same. With the same style and tone. And they all are so mean-spirited, raunchy, lowbrow, and dumb for no reason. Like sure kids media can be lowbrow and dumb but I feel like there are a lot more good kids cartoons and anime in general than there are adult western cartoons. They at least feel different in some capacity and not just raunchy and mean-spirited for the sake of it.
That's because most adult animated shows think they can substitute clever writing with saying swear words, and explicit sex and violence.
It's what Family Guy devolved into and South Park (mostly) grew out of. Where the social commentary took predecence with South Park, and Family Guy devolved into the template for most edgy adult cartoons.

Honestly, that would be a fun premise for a movie or short if put in the right hands. Maybe Santa gets sick, hurt, or burned out and Mrs Claus is tasked with delivering presents. Maybe she has trouble at first trying to take Santa's role and preparing for the big day, but with the help of her friends and never ending support from her husband, she delivers the presents to all the children in the world. No woke and political garbage or anything, just a simple and charming (and maybe perhaps comedic) story.

Honestly, people greatly underrate the ability of children to comprehend complex things. Probably because they just aren't good at explaining them. It strikes me as absurd that some people think they can just get away with creating the most simplistic and brainless garbage and get away with it because it's for kids. That's how you get simplistic and brainless adults. But the truth is that they don't make this crap because kids can't handle intelligent entertainment, they do it because they can get away with it, because the kids often don't know any better. So really, they're preying on kids when they should be teaching and entertaining them.

The biggest problem with Santa inc is that the entire concept of the show should be letting us root against Santa but after his genuine talk and reason why the mc isn’t getting the position while also giving her an arguably better role he is instantly humanized.
Which only makes our mc more unlikeable and her motivations even more flawed due to being a horrible person the entire show.
If someone else had the concept, maybe it could be funny instead of painful and condescending - it's a hard one to pull off but I think someone could. These people just aren't as clever or interesting as they think they are lmao

That's part of the (many) problems. She's meant to be an undervalued hardworking woman, but acts like a vindictive, spiteful, petty bully, even when someone doesn't deserve it, and wonders why people don't seem to like her. She doesn't believe in the role of Santa, but she doesn't want anyone else to have it, all to satisfy her own ego.

The worst part about any of these “topical issues” shows is that they don’t do anything with these observations: they just say them and let them sit there and expect you to find it funny because “relatable”. They don’t offer any solutions or ways in which these issues can be fixed or solved nor do they actually derive humor from the situations.
To be fair, we as a society haven't figured it out yet. Doesn't excuse bad writing, only emphasizing how hard it is to write something good for a mainstream audience that's actually thought provoking.
Also these “topical issues” will date the show like hell, at least when something like South Park does topical issues they aren’t fucking attacking one side, they go after both

It's funny how shows made for kids like Kim Possible, Powerpuff Girls, Etc are able to present the creator's views on certain issues in a subtle way that leaves it up to the viewer to decide what they think. While a large part of recent shows made for adults really feel like they need to beat everyone over the head with their views on current issues.

On the other hand, South Park of all things handles characters with these traits well in recent years and ironically (given its reputation) has become much better at being progressive than most shows that try to be as a result. Despite some characters being based on tropes/stereotypes, there's usually much more to them as characters aside from that and they feel like actual people as opposed to just caricatures as a result. A good example is Token Black who despite being a spoof on 'the black guy' as his name suggests, has many others layers to his character and also contradicts a lot of black stereotypes to the point where he's almost the complete opposite. They also handled Tweek and Craig well too since they didn't slap gay stereotypes on them when they hooked up and handled the subject maturely and realistically.
Also made the lead female character revolve around constantly trying to 1-Up a man. That's not insecure or a painfully overused trope at all
Honestly, I actually like the joke at 20:00. Walrus guy makes a regular mistake at a golf court, Candy tries to be a snarky asshole about it, and to her surprise, instead of lashing out or ignoring the question, the walrus gives her an honest response, not realizing that she was just trying to be an asshole. I like this joke because of walrus guy's cluelessness and because Candy gets what she deserves for being the asshole she is.

It is so much worse than the main character simply running over a sapient reindeer and leaving him to die, No no no. She runs him over, gets out of the car acknowledges him and his situation than calls him what was established as a RACIAL SLUR toward reindeer than drives off and leaves him to die. She literally makes an accident into a second degree manslaughter and a hate crime!
Or hero folks! Yet they somehow wonder why people hated this show.

If you take a great adult animated show, Bojack horseman, the titular character does pretty awful things. These are acknowledged though. They're not anecdotal (hope I'm using that word right). They come back to bite him.
There can be a good blend of humor and dark subjects but this ain't it.
@@azuki_Owell that and when BH does horrible things to others it is usually as a direct reaction to a wrong done onto him with most of his really bad actions being primarily self destructive ways of dealing with stress.
This keeps him very likable because we get where he is coming from and he mostly only hurts himself. At least he thinks he does until he sobers up the next day and realizes how he dragged everyone down with him. Which leads to the next self destructive spiral.
Now there are times where this doesn’t apply and those are often the worst moments of the show. However even then if usually comes from a place of self preservation rather than malice. (Thinking specifically of how he ruined Todd’s rock opera out of er of losing his friend and the control he has over him)

On the list of things wrong with this series, the fact that the main character was massive asshole is revealing. If this is the type of character the writers thought would be liked and well received, it says a lot about them.

Only very specific types of assholes are likeable as protagonists, and for me that's the everyday asshole. He's not some overly aggressive guy who insults people for the fun of it. He's the guy who is just living his life and ends up doing asshole things. Someone like Scott Pilgrim, he's not a great guy, but he's not the type of asshole Candy is.

How much of an arc they go through, or how justifiable that is, can vary from character to character.
Scott is recognized as someone who needs to grow up, and he only gains self respect once he apologizes for his fuck ups. He's not portrayed as a good person, even if he's a very relatable one for many people.
I'd compare this to Rick and Morty.
We're rarely supposed to cheer Rick on, he's clearly a psychopath, and a lot of his victims have a degree of nuance to them.
While in Santa Inc., we're supposed to be rooting for someone who's just a really shitty person, because all her victims are 2 dimensional strawmen.
(Also: "They're good because their opponent's are bad" is an awful argument. Stalin wasn't a hero for fighting Hitler, and vice versa.)
The thing that I don't get is... if you want to make a story about a female or jewish Santa Claus so badly, do you even need the whole men vs. women thing... like at all? You could easily focus on having to deal with the expectations towards the role of Santa and who Santa is on their own. You don't need an antagonist or strawman. Hell you could weave in a message about body positivity and christmas being open to anyone if you wanted just by playing off of how we imagine Santa and how hard it can be to live up to that.
But most importantly *you wouldn't be going out of your way to piss people off.*
I think, the fact is, these shows aren't even really about morals that the author wants to share with the world. What they actually want, is to use the show as a platform to make themselves "right" about any debate they ever had, and "get back" at anyone whose ever wronged them.
I honestly think the best idea how to touch discrimination topics in that show would be if she was discriminated because.. of being an elf

It's shocking just how many cartoons targeted towards kids and young adults are more mature than the cartoons targeted specifically for adults.
I think it's because most studios still don't acknowledge them as serious media, thus their writers are given minimal studio intervention.
Because the PG rating forces them to be limited in what they can show. It actually forces them to be clever and creative. Thats why many of them have hidden jokes and stuff like that. Meanwhile if they didnt have these limitations they are unhinged and it could be too excessive. So the limitation PG actually has a benefit sometimes for these shows
The best way to put it, simply just having excessive swearing, sex jokes, gross-out jokes and shock bait just for sake of it doesn't make a particular movie/TV show more adult, if anything, it just makes it more childish, because the only target demographic that would get a massive kick out of it would be those who are too young to watch them.
It works kinda like with the swearing. A kid can swear too, but it will be cringy, a lot of unnecessary swearing feels annoying and there are old people saying old and mature thing not swearing at all

The concept of a female Santa done in stop-motion animation was already done almost 50 years ago with lovely characters, a real conflict, songs, and action. It was called "The Year Without a Santa Claus" and it was produced by Rankin-Bass, masters of the stop-motion Christmas movies, and it's not only genuinely fun and funny, it's timeless and yet timely. Mrs. Claus debates taking over for Santa when he gets sick and believes that nobody will miss him if he takes a vacation, and even Vixen (a deer, a female deer) gets involved in solving the problem.
In short, this series was not needed. In any way.

Following the unironically sexist lead female character in this show, I'm convinced that most aren't arguing their politics, they're arguing what they're hoping are the audience's politics so they can get their "and then everyone clapped" ending without having to put in any legitimate work.
As an animatior myself, I cannot imagine how disappointed the animators on this project must feel. They obviously worked hard to produce high-quality models and animation (far better than this show deserved), and all that hard work is for what? Irrepirably having their names on one of the worst- recived pieces of media of all time. Must be just devastating for them.

I think it's a case of the misapplication of a solid trope common to stories with this basic theme.
That kind of offer *would* be insulting in so many stories. If the reasoning was "we can't have a *Jewish* , *woman* Santa, but we'll let you run it while a white man gets the credit", then "Go fuck yourself" would have been an entirely valid response!
It's a trope in media about people breaking barriers: the offer that acknowledges and wants to exploit their talent but still uphold the prejudice. And it rightly gets shut down by the protagonist, to hammer home the message that can't have it both ways: You don't get to benefit from marginalised people's legitimate skills and talent while actively upholding the unjust system that denies it.
But in *this* case, she was simply bad at being The Face. Not because she was a woman, nor because she was Jewish, but because she was *bad with kids* .
Which is kinda a big deal for Santa.
Which made the offer entirely reasonable *and to her own benefit* .
Which means telling Santa to go fuck himself no longer reads as a Brave Stand Against Injustice, but rather it feels like childish petulance.
She solely did all this for the attention, attention that she wasn't going to receive because she wasn't kid-friendly.

Everyone has said it before, the entire show is a trainwreck and the one character you're supposed to hate is the most likeable and most reasonable. They spent the majority of the show on their soapbox pushing social politics without making the characters likeable at all while setting it during a time when people forget their differences and come together during the festive season. Then there's "that scene" which made Santa come across as a genuinely reasonable person and was willing to give Candy the most important job in the business, but because it wasn't front and centre she let her ego get in the way.

You know, that whole scene where Santa Claus calls Candy, not only he went out of his way to explain why he didn't chose her (mind you he doesn't have any obligation to do do), but he made so many valid points, you can't help but agree with him.
Even awful writers can have a stroke of genius sometimes.
And then they probably realized they were making too much sense that, to remedy that and don't contradict their message, Santa Is immediately revealed to be a total crook.

Well feminism's always had a nasty habit of doing that, starting with the idea that a woman could be proud of just running her household for most of history. Nope, women's strength and willpower was invented sometime during the industrial revolution, apparently. Coincidentally about the time that industrialists wanted to shove them all down coal mines.
I remember Sausage Party being well-received at launch and people calling it a welcome relief. Now, it is used as a demonstration of what NOT to do for adult animation. And I consider that to be a good progression of people's tastes in media.

You have to love how the shows protagonist, the person who they want us to root for, is portrayed as a literal sociopath who has none of the qualities that would make them a good Santa Claus replacement like being good with children or being apart of the religion that actually practices Christmas.

For all its faults, If theres one thing I like about "santa inc" it's the character designs. I find Candy beautiful with her prominent hooked nose, curly hair and thick eyebrows.

Apart from the mouths that they added in post and the other flaws you mentioned, they pulled the stop-motion style off pretty well in my opinion. Some of the characters and set designs look cool. I’m sorry for the animators who had to work on this though. Imagine you invest countless hours and true passion for your craft into a series, and this is the final product.
Somehow The Nightmare Before Christmas, which came out some 20 years ago, still manages too look better.

The problem with these forced politics in shows, is that they just vaguely SAY why something is bad rather than show it. People are a lot more reasonable when they fully understand an issue, like with Santa's heart to heart, but the show would rather make their antagonists """evil""" and thus make any argument they impose invalid, because the evil man said it.
Exactly. When writing, it's important that you show, and you don't tell. Exposition should be used sparingly and only when it would be basically impossible to tell the story through anything else. There's certainly a lot more emotional response actually watching someone get hurt, rather than somebody bring it up afterwards. Like, imagine in return of the Jedi if C-3PO and R2-D2 were just talking about all the droids that were being tortured instead of you actually watching them get tortured, that entire threat would have had such little impact because you didn't actually get to see the horrors, you just heard about them second-hand from someone else.
Agreed. That is why nuanced storytelling is important, otherwise, it'll either be blindly wanked or just written off as milquetoast propaganda. Either way, it won't gain a fanbase and at best, it'll be a flash in the pan. I don't get why corpos keep failing again and again to understand this.

This show might be a special kind of horrendous to me, but when a piece of media is politicized, people have a tendency to get their minds so winded up in their own politics they forget to actually critique the media. And sometimes the piece of media will end up living in people's heads for weeks, months, or even YEARS.

At first everyone was just "meh feminism bad, trans bad, woke sjws etc" but when Uniquenameosaurus did a honest review of it I actually learned a lot about how to do representation right, what kinds of pitfalls can ruin a show and how to make a good series set in a magical setting
When queen serafina did a review of it I saw a lot of errors I missed on my first viewing
And when Jamie de longe did her rewrite of moments in the show I finally saw the potential of the show on my screen
All of these people could have just written off the series as "some sjw cash grab" which it was but instead of complaining and moving on they used it to provide knowledge and entertainment that overshadowed the original project
Name a single HGS review that DIDN’T critique the show fairly. Cause I’ve watched countless reviews of the show-by people of varying political standpoints-in both hour long review format and episode by episode analyses of the series, and not a single one of them ever claimed those things you said. In fact, they largely pointed out the fact that many white knights of this show will slander their criticisms with those very same blanket-level statements that you’ve stated. Just because the reviews point out the awful LGBT representation and the misandry of the writers doesn’t make their critiques invalid. The fact that 95% of them bring up the writing, animation, voice acting, characterization, world-building, plot development, etc. as the core flaws of the show really shows that you just wanted to use your politics as the basis as to why those reviewers are “wrong”. The people you named pointed out the same/similar problems with she show, but you zoned in on politics and diverted your attention away from the primary issues those “woke-despizing” reviewers had with the show.
Off the top of my head, I can list at least 10 large names that have fairly criticized this show (in review/analysis format) [only checked up the channel names for some spelling/capitalization]: MangaKamen, dannphan, BlackLightJack, Just Stop, NECRO XIII, Manga Writer, Literature Devil, Anime America, NatalieXHunter, and Trumann.
(Not sure why I listed these off, but I guess if you are gonna name-drop channels whose HGS reviews you didn’t despise, then I’ll do the same…)

Just how I feel... if these shows actually cared about any of the things they claim, then they would make an effort to make their representation of issues....good? Total Drama Island a children/ teen TV show had Lashawna the most stereotypical black woman ive ever seen in cartoons that I’ve watched and they somehow made her one of the best characters in the whole show. Honestly I’d really like it if Santa seemed antagonistic and sexist when Candy is just an elf working there, but when she starts to try and work her way up snd they get to know each other she learns that he really isn’t that way, she just saw him that way because her position made her resent him.
Also including another female character who had the potential to be Santa but was constantly snubbed or denied the role. In the end Candy helps her become the next Santa and she learns that even though she didn’t become Santa, she was able to inspire and help someone else to.

The worst part? Had the show stopped with the heart to heart scene of Santa explaining his reasoning it could have been good. That scene was perfect, like an actually really well written and scripted scene. Then they toss it aside. So yikes.
If they had decided not to do the whole "santa is actually a drug dealer so now she can blackmail him" thing, and instead made Candy have to come to terms with the fact that she didn't get the job, not because of her race or gender, but because she was a nasty person and wasn't the best for the job, then they could've actually salvaged this shit somewhat. Not as a comedy or anything, but they could've at least had a single worthwhile thing to say.

I feel, in a good show, that Santa Claus being a title and not a name can be a neat concept. Like the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, whatever. It would be original and cool... If handled well. Unfortunately not the case here

I mean, that concept isn't really new. The Santa Clause and Earnest Saves Christmas covered that, to name a couple, and ESC even ended with a Black Santa! There was no uproar over it, as it's both Christmas, AND the Earnest Movies were funny and wholesome.
I will forever be convinced that people like Sara Silverman and Mindy Kaling actually do experience the workplace the way they portray, not because it’s actually that potent but because they go into it with bitterness and take everything men say with a grain of salt. Then, instead of realizing they’re just angry at society the way everyone is, they think all women with agree with and appreciate their point of view. I’ve had my own issues as a woman in the workplace, but I can tell you right now the proper way to handle it isn’t with more viciousness and aggression.
I applaud anyone who made through the entire season of this show. I only made it to episode 3 before I gave up. The toxic feminism throughout the show made all the profanity more frustrating. I’m so tired of other women wanting to “take down the patriarchy” when their ideas are no better than what the guys are doing. How is it better just because a woman is the jerk in charge now?

I find it kind of ironic that "adult" shows, especially comedies, lots of time have the most childish writing and humor ever.
It tells a lot when cartoons aimed at kids/teenagers or independent creators are more mature than your show.

You know what would've been neat?
If the MC realized how horrible her motivation for becoming Santa was and have her have an internal conflict over it.
Maybe have her earn the position in the end, but she gives it up for black Santa, because she realizes that he is better suited for the job.
The show has a good set up to make a discussion about the meaning of representation and how to implement it, to bad we didn't get that.
