Awesome sound. When I was in HS, my private teacher (an Adam student) lent me some UWEC cds. Blew me away. Stay fired up!

Do you ever play on a larger piece? Can you talk a little bit about what it's like to play above high c on something similar to a Bach 1c. How would you describe the difference in feel between the two.

I still play a Bach 3C for less commercial music. There was a time when I played a 1 1/4 C, but only for a little while. I feel comfortable playing in the upper register on my 3C, it’s just a slightly different sound…a little less brightness in the sound. But it feels pretty much the same, and not any more difficult. If I were to play on a wider rim, it’d probably take me a little time to adjust, but I’m sure the upper register would still be there.

How about upper loud register? How do we achieve that

Hey there! Thanks for the question…
When I’m playing, I’m thinking of singing. If I’m playing pianissimo, I’m thinking of “yelling” a pianissimo. If I want to play very loud, I think of “yelling” a fortissimo. These are mental ideas I got from my teacher, William Adam. Hope that makes sense? It’s easier to think of it that way rather than getting caught up in blowing harder, etc. which can create tension and actually diminish your sound.
Also, one thing to note, is that the iPhone microphone kind of self-adjusts to the volume, so it might not seem like I’m playing as loudly in the video.
Feel free to hit me up with any other questions anytime! Thanks.

Yeah, seems silly right? But don’t take my word for it, you could talk to many of Bill Adam’s students about it, including Charley Davis. If you do it the way I described in the video, your physical system automatically gets set up, including your embouchure, so you don’t even have to think about it. There’s a funny line from the Broadway show I’m playing in right now, The Music Man. It’s called “The Think System.” Harold Hill, the bandleader, is a phony, but in the end, his “think” system produces results 😊

The mind is ready to place restrictions and nothing except negativity can grow in that space. Our mindset can be set to “I can’t” in a minute. We have to teach ourselves to get out of the way. It is like the saying “ whether you think you can or can’t, either way you are right.” If we keep telling ourselves we can’t, most always turns out that way. I would agree with your message. Music is not a brute force activity.
