Great product. My g27 decoder broke outside of the warranty, replaced it with this and now the wheel is working flawlessly! Bit pricey though but a lot cheaper then a new wheel and it works (and that's what its about).
I just installed this on my 2 yr old g27 (60holes). From factory the wheel never really aligned properly. After installation my g27 is perfect. Great product.

Thanks for the question. Of course, our brass encoder will fix a machine with a broken or warped plastic encoder. But, in addition, we have had extremely positive comments from our customers saying things like "it rejuvenated my old wheel" or "my wheel feels like a new machine." If your calibration issue is encoder related, it will fix your problem. Hope this helps.
I just installed the encoder wheel, which I received 2 weeks ago (it took approximately 3 weeks for delivery to Canada, as predicted on the CML site). The wheel was slightly loose, but secured easily with a drop of Loctite 401, as Glenn advised. I cannot speak highly enough of the customer service they provide - responses are prompt, peronalised and helpful. My G27 is amazing; better than new, thanks to Glenn Baucom!

I had the classic split encoder which meant my G25 refused to calibrate and work correctly. Ordered this item and had it fitted within a week. I now have a fully functional wheel. Recommended!!
I received it after 2 weeks and replaced the old broken encoder by this one : my G27 works now, thank you !!!!!!!!!!! Before this, my wheel cannot do the calibration at all.

My sensor broke and then I bought the cml sensor never had problems. I strongly advise this sensor. Many problems happened later with the g27 but cml sensor is intact and working perfectly, probably for eternity so well built. From Brazil

Replacing my current wheel (G27) for a new one (TMX Pro) and I started to think about the good and bad times I had with my G27. I had optical encoder issues 12 months (of heavy use) after buying my G27, that is how I discovered CMLaser and their precision cut encoder made of metal (brass if I remember correctly) rather than the original plastic one. I received my new encoder after about 2 weeks (again, I'm going from memory now) and installation was fairly easy, the old plastic one had cracked and was not holding its position (which is quite important for a position sensor). I did all of this 3+ years ago and have not had any issues with the new 'brass' encoder from CMLaser. It saved me the cost of a new wheel, and they kept me informed of the process via email. Anyway, just felt I should leave this message to anyone having second thoughts. I don't think my new TMX Pro will have any similar issues with it's position sensor, but if it did I wouldn't hesitate to contact CMLaser (if they had a solution). Thanks guys
Update 07/07/16 - Ordered the encoder disc from CMLaser, great quality and thanks to them and mikeschmeeedotcom it is working again. I would add, to make sure you align the geared board fully to the left to ensure it can calibrate properly - and I also had to gently push the encoder disc closer to the black optical reader as it couldn't read it the first time. Other than that it works beautifully and I don't need to buy a new wheel now. Thanks so much guys!

Im in a blackass.have the problem decentering my wheel while using it .After each turn it goes worse.I read how can i fix it .And my Optical Encoder seams to perfect fine.All crews are tight.And even to be sure I glued the encoder to the shaft ,thought was sliding but it got even little worse.I would buy the new encoder but dont know if it helps ,my isnt broken.I missed championships cause of that .Please help i cant live without my wheel x
Ordered two of these yesterday. Now I have to sit on nails and wait for them to arrive. Hope you guys are right and this will remedy my problem. Issue is calibration failure on boot.

Install it. Working good. Thanks.But it not to easy to install. First it to tight. Then to loose after sander. I reccomend you desing some center rubber clutch that help properly and easy hold on motor' axis.
Hi Glenn, my G27 started failing, my problem is that the green light is blinking, buttons all work but pedals and wheel not. When I connect it to the PC the wheel tries to move a little to the left and then stops, couple of seconds and try again to move to the right and stops again. Seems like the motor tries to rotate but instead of going all the way, stops just in a sec. Could this be the encoder problem ? Thanks.
Hi Martin, this sounds like the classic symptom of a failed encoder. You'll need to crack open the case and take a look to 100% sure, but I'm almost certain this is the case. Classic behaviour is jerk, pause, jerk, jerk, pause, jerk. repeat.

I think I need that piece for my DFGT which has centering problems and always keeps 45 degrees to the right to drive straight. To replace or fix that piece will fix my problem? thanks
Hello, I got the encoder, placed it cool and good, and the wheel feels great. But I have an issue, when I center the wheel the in game wheel is slightly tilted to the right. Like 2-3 degrees, but its still noticeable. The software picks it up as well, when i center the wheel it doesn't show it being completely centered. The turn degrees are still fully usable (900) I have the 2nd Gen G27 with the 30 slot encoder. How do you advice me to fix this. Is there any chance I put the encoder wrong? The PCB or the optical sensor wasn't touched at all though. Not sure what to do. But I did notice a huge improvement, so the product seems great. The centering is my issue. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Hi, sorry for the late reply. This is not the first time I've heard of this problem, but I'm afraid it isn't the encoder. Once the system senses the correct encoder, it initiates calibration. If it doesn't, it won't calibrate. I have seen occasions, but rarely, where a 30 slot encoder calibrated on a 60 slot machine, but the ratio to turns was obvious to the user. Usually a 30 on 60 unit begins the calibration, but fails after the first stop. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Hi, Measure the outside diameter and count the number of slots. The outside dimension should be ~16mm and there should be 60 slots. If so, then I believe it will work. send email to address in video description. Glenn
i was using from 2012 to 2020 without understanding anything, but when i say some video like this i thought ok this can bee the problem why some time i see some changes on my wheel but without know it i just thought is ok is old now :D with this will have again a perfect work
cmlaserservice like i said not precise and it's not worth the money, plastic one do the better job and last for at least a year or two so really pointless to buy the metal version at hefthy cost.

Hi, thanks for your note. The G25 uses only 60slot. G27 uses both, meaning the older units are 60 and the newer units are 30slot. It is likely your unit is older G27 circa 2013...however, it is better to open it up and take a look. Exchange is possible, but a time waster and costs more shipping. So, once you know which one you have, you may order at any time. Thx.

This is my second g27 with the same calibration problem I tried everything and some methods I tried for multiple times if this works please let me know It is not very expensive if you consider that if it wasn't there I would've had to buy a new g27. Please help guys.
My apologies in advance, this is not a critical question to impugn the validity of your product but how does your metal encoder improve upon the original design other than simply transplanting a metal disk inplace of a plastic disk? The video shows a very sophisticated laser cutting device with impeccable precision. Are the "teeth" of your disk more numerous and closer together than the default disk? Is this what allows better driving precision or are the "teeth" of the encoder the exact same dimensions as the original? Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated and well received as the video didn't really touch upon these aspects of your encoder to which I, the consumer, should purchase your product. Thank you!
First of often these break (since made out of plastic like mine) second of there has been production issues where some wasnt cut in the g27 so you would miss 1 out 60 (since you cant increase the amount of Teeth etc) you cant increase the amount of teeth nor make them closer together! but... its 99% for more durability

To answer PFG Mako's question, Several of my early customers commented on how "fresh" and "accurate" their wheels felt after changing to my metal encoder. hi so i purchased this not so long ago and i installed it but would you suggest to superglue it in? as i am experiencing problems still with the wheel not centering properly or if i quickly go left then right it wont be centered and i cant figure out why or could it be that i might not have installed it correctly? thanks
Hi, sorry for the late reply. Please check to see if the encoder is loose. Very rarely the spindle on the FFB motor is smaller than normal and it is a little loose. try to spin it with your finger. It should not move. If it is tight, and it calibrates, then the problem is something else. If it is loose, please use a little Loc-tite glue. it can handle the high heat without failing. Let me know.
i thanks for the reply and sorry also for the late reply i managed to fix this by moving the encoder closer to what i believe is the receiving infared side and that fixed it not sure why i think it was just spinning but now i have another problem with the shifter i dont know if you know much about them but the shifter is completely dead except the green light
Hi Frank, The only known way to tell is the box color. Older G27s come in a box with GREEN accent color. New G27s come in a box with BLUE accent colors. Short of that, the only known way to tell for sure is to crack open the case.

Does this work on a G920? I'm thinking of changing mine, I'm still under warranty, and my first replacement is having the same issue as my previous wheel, so I'm wondering if I should just do this instead of hassling with returning.
Glenn Baucom Ah, lucky I asked first then! My wheel is pretty inaccurate, I play with pretty high FFB, so going over some bumps or crashing would offset the centre of my wheel afterwards. Everytime I turn on my wheel I have to go through a wheelcheck application to generate a new LUT file for my wheel just to get it working normally. And then in Assetto Corsa, when configuring my wheel the game will never give me an accurate representation of my wheel or the angle of it, even though my first G920 would read very accurate when I first received it.
Hall Sensors are based on magnets, but the bits that hold them onto the FFB motors are of course, plastic. So, they are likely to suffer the same problems that the encoders faced with loose, cracked or broken magnet holders. I'm convinced that it is the heat, coupled with the loose tolerances of the size of the FFB spindles that actually causes the problems with the encoders. And, I suspect the Hall Sensors will eventually suffer the same fate. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
No problem, you were very helpful, I was thinking of opening up mine and trying to jam this in there, so I'm happy to get more information about how it works. I'll probably just stick to the warranty and get mine replaced again, hoping everything is better this time around.
Its a good idea, but it won't work that way. Logitech reduced the number of holes to 30 in a new format for the new G27 a few years ago. They compensate for the difference in the number of slots by adjusting the software.

cmlaserservice the steering wheel is in the center, as long as the game does not work. when i open , race raly, or project cars. so agin the old problem, and the wheel moves at 90 degrees to left.
Hmm, The wheel calibrates automatically, so the encoder is doing its job. The only thing I can think of is a firmware issue between the games and the wheel.
Thanks for your help... i found my problem tho, the lasers cicuit board was loose so it couldnt get a reading on the peice... ill prolly still buy this :)

Had an issue with my g27 failing on its test spins at startup. Replaced my plastic optical encoder with this and it's back to life, better than new.

Seems like the motor tries to rotate but instead of going all the way, stops just in a sec. Could this be the encoder problem ? Thanks.
Hi Martin, this sounds like the classic symptom of a failed encoder. You'll need to crack open the case and take a look to 100% sure, but I'm almost certain this is the case. Classic behaviour is jerk, pause, jerk, jerk, pause, jerk. repeat.

Hello, I got the encoder, placed it cool and good, and the wheel feels great. But I have an issue, when I center the wheel the in game wheel is slightly tilted to the right. Like 2-3 degrees, but its still noticeable. The software picks it up as well, when i center the wheel it doesn't show it being completely centered. The turn degrees are still fully usable (900) I have the 2nd Gen G27 with the 30 slot encoder. How do you advice me to fix this. Is there any chance I put the encoder wrong? The PCB or the optical sensor wasn't touched at all though. Not sure what to do. But I did notice a huge improvement, so the product seems great. The centering is my issue. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Hi, sorry for the late reply. This is not the first time I've heard of this problem, but I'm afraid it isn't the encoder. Once the system senses the correct encoder, it initiates calibration. If it doesn't, it won't calibrate. I have seen occasions, but rarely, where a 30 slot encoder calibrated on a 60 slot machine, but the ratio to turns was obvious to the user. Usually a 30 on 60 unit begins the calibration, but fails after the first stop. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hi, Measure the outside diameter and count the number of slots. The outside dimension should be ~16mm and there should be 60 slots. If so, then I believe it will work. send email to address in video description. Glenn

Hi, thanks for your note. The G25 uses only 60slot. G27 uses both, meaning the older units are 60 and the newer units are 30slot. It is likely your unit is older G27 circa 2013...however, it is better to open it up and take a look. Exchange is possible, but a time waster and costs more shipping. So, once you know which one you have, you may order at any time. Thx.

Hi I have the logitech g27 I'm bored I can no longer play I try to power up the wheel but there's no calibration at all I've tried replacing the fuse in the plug but there still no power any ideas I can't find anything online about this problem

This is my second g27 with the same calibration problem I tried everything and some methods I tried for multiple times if this works please let me know It is not very expensive if you consider that if it wasn't there I would've had to buy a new g27. Please help guys.

My apologies in advance, this is not a critical question to impugn the validity of your product but how does your metal encoder improve upon the original design other than simply transplanting a metal disk inplace of a plastic disk? The video shows a very sophisticated laser cutting device with impeccable precision. Are the "teeth" of your disk more numerous and closer together than the default disk? Is this what allows better driving precision or are the "teeth" of the encoder the exact same dimensions as the original? Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated and well received as the video didn't really touch upon these aspects of your encoder to which I, the consumer, should purchase your product. Thank you!
First of often these break (since made out of plastic like mine) second of there has been production issues where some wasnt cut in the g27 so you would miss 1 out 60 (since you cant increase the amount of Teeth etc) you cant increase the amount of teeth nor make them closer together! but... its 99% for more durability

To answer PFG Mako's question, Several of my early customers commented on how "fresh" and "accurate" their wheels felt after changing to my metal encoder. hi so i purchased this not so long ago and i installed it but would you suggest to superglue it in? as i am experiencing problems still with the wheel not centering properly or if i quickly go left then right it wont be centered and i cant figure out why or could it be that i might not have installed it correctly?

Hi, sorry for the late reply. Please check to see if the encoder is loose. Very rarely the spindle on the FFB motor is smaller than normal and it is a little loose. try to spin it with your finger. It should not move. If it is tight, and it calibrates, then the problem is something else. If it is loose, please use a little Loc-tite glue. it can handle the high heat without failing. Let me know.
i thanks for the reply and sorry also for the late reply i managed to fix this by moving the encoder closer to what i believe is the receiving infared side and that fixed it not sure why i think it was just spinning but now i have another problem with the shifter i dont know if you know much about them but the shifter is completely dead except the green light

How do you know if your G27 is the new or old version? (bought mine around 2014/15)
Hi Frank, The only known way to tell is the box color. Older G27s come in a box with GREEN accent color. New G27s come in a box with BLUE accent colors. Short of that, the only known way to tell for sure is to crack open the case.

Does this work on a G920? I'm thinking of changing mine, I'm still under warranty, and my first replacement is having the same issue as my previous wheel, so I'm wondering if I should just do this instead of hassling with returning.
Hi Patrick, the new wheels, G29 and G920 use a Hall Sensor, not an encoder. What issue are you having?

My wheel is pretty inaccurate, I play with pretty high FFB, so going over some bumps or crashing would offset the centre of my wheel afterwards.
Everytime I turn on my wheel I have to go through a wheelcheck application to generate a new LUT file for my wheel just to get it working normally. And then in Assetto Corsa, when configuring my wheel the game will never give me an accurate representation of my wheel or the angle of it, even though my first G920 would read very accurate when I first received it.
Hall Sensors are based on magnets, but the bits that hold them onto the FFB motors are of course, plastic. So, they are likely to suffer the same problems that the encoders faced with loose, cracked or broken magnet holders. I'm convinced that it is the heat, coupled with the loose tolerances of the size of the FFB spindles that actually causes the problems with the encoders. And, I suspect the Hall Sensors will eventually suffer the same fate. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
No problem, you were very helpful, I was thinking of opening up mine and trying to jam this in there, so I'm happy to get more information about how it works. I'll probably just stick to the warranty and get mine replaced again, hoping everything is better this time around.

What if you make it like 80 holes, will it work at higher resolution than 60 holes?
Its a good idea, but it won't work that way. Logitech reduced the number of holes to 30 in a new format for the new G27 a few years ago. They compensate for the difference in the number of slots by adjusting the software.

the steering wheel is in the center, as long as the game does not work. when i open , race raly, or project cars. so agin the old
problem, and the wheel moves at 90 degrees to left.
Hmm, The wheel calibrates automatically, so the encoder is doing its job. The only thing I can think of is a firmware issue between the games and the wheel.
