Is his name Blue or Green? (And other Gen 1 Trainer name confusion)

  • Today I take a look at the Generation 1 Rival and talk about what his name is! Every day I get comments about how his name is really Green and that I'm mixing his names up, so in this video I talk a little bit about why he has two different names, as well as how another character (an unknown character from the games) also influenced his name.

    Here we go! After a ton of people corrected me (and still correct me) on calling the Rival Blue, I thought I'd dig into the character name history a little bit and explain why he can be called both Blue and Green! I feel like this video might have made things more confusing, so hopefully it all makes sense in the end. ;_;

    • @oucyan

+Mr Buddy another reason why both blue and green are correct. the Japanese word for green, Midori, originally meant both the colors blue AND green. it wasn't until post world war II that the word Ao was used for the color blue exclusively, leaving midori to be used for green exclusively. in fact, some Japanese seniors still use the word midori when describing the color blue, much to the annoyance of the younger generation.
the fact that his his name is interchangeable as blue and green is hilarious, because it reflects the actual japanese word for green, midori being interchangeable as either green or blue in meaning.

It gets a bit more complicated when look at the Japanese colour name "Aoi" (青い) until WWII "Aoi" was the colour name for both Blue and Green shades (from sky blue to sea green) but during the occupation it become more common to make the distinction and "Midori" (緑) came to be use more often for Green colours, but "Aoi" is still used for green in some case such as "Aoumigame" (green turtle) and "Aoendou" (green peas)

I call the male character Green and the female character Blue for many reasons. One, because green seems more like a masculine name, and blue more feminine. And two, I like to think that their starter types correspond with their names. Red is charmander, blue is squirtle, green is bulbasaur.

Personally, when I play through FRLG, I tend to pick the girl and name her Green, as I feel the name suits her better. No idea why I think that way, but that's the human brain for you. Also, although I know it's wrong, I tend to name my rival Gary. It may be wrong, but I got used to calling him that when I didn't know better. Nowadays, I like to think of Gary as his real name, and Blue as a nickname. It may be derived from a mistake, but it's what I'm used to.

I liked that his name was green in pokemon the origin bc it shows his personality more when he chooses his starter. red chose charmander bc it matched his name and oak asks green if he was going to choose bulbasaur to match his name but then he says "I ain't choosing my starter by using some bitch method" (my translation may be a little off) and then he chooses squirtle so that he has an advantage on red. That's totally something a jackass like green would do and that's one of the reasons it's so satisfying to beat him bc he has an advantage but we train harder and we take him down. on the other hand in the dub his name was blue and it kinda underhands this scenario. oak asks if he was going to choose squirtle to match his name and he basically says the same thing and then he chooses squirtle anyways. obviously it's for the same reason to have an advantage over red but it also leaves the viewer to wonder if in the back of his head he was like "dammit gramps you're embarassing me" and made up the red part to hide the fact that he had the same idea as red and is basically a bitch for choosing a pokemon bc it matched your name.

+Mr Buddy Actually the sex was always set on male, which is probably because, just like brendan, may, prof. oak and red, she's just filler data who don't actually show up as trainers. Hence it's on male by default. Also the sex option determines the genders of the Trainer's pokemon, not necessarily the trainer itself.
Unused Trainers also always have a level 5 Ekans by default, which I don't quite understand (Ekans is #023 by index number), but I find it pretty interesting.

I'm okay with either name in the games be it Blue or Green, but in the manga it's obvious the rival is Green while the female character is Blue. Reason: their official eye color. Even in the US release of the FRLG chapter of the manga, they kept Green's eyes green instead of changing it to blue.

It's like calling Ash, "Ash" or "Satoshi". In Japan, Ash is called Satoshi and everywhere else is called Ash. So if you call Ash "Ash" then you call Blue/Green "Blue." Also calling people by there Japanese names is like calling a Pokemon by there Japanese name also.

  • @arkhamj8181

Green just makes more sense to me, especially when reading the manga (though changing it in my head is something I had to get used to). First of all, Green is Red's rival, who has a Charizard to rival Red's Veonosaur, so that all lines up nicely. Second, eye colors, Green has green eyes, and Blue has Blue eyes. Third, Red and Green came first, with blue to follow later, just as the games did in the real world.
As you said, it truly doesn't matter when talking them as long as you are clear that it's the rival or the girl that you are talking about.
Also worth mentioning that Blue has a Blastoise, and later on, Yellor (again, a real world parallel) is identified by her yellow hat (and pika I suppose)

+Apple Yui In the manga he gets it from oak after rescuing it or something, so he gets bulbasaur. Later on, he trades with Green(gary) for a while and gets charizard, and Green also lends him charizard at other points of the manga.
I guess they did this to encourage people to pick whatever starter they wanted regardless of the version they were playing.

Personally, I always call them this; Male Player, Red, Rival, Blue, and Female, Green. That just feels right for me. I see it as the games refer to the main character (Red and Green, Sun and Moon) for instance, so while the characters aren't always named after the games (Ruby/Sapphire; May and Brendan) I still choose to believe that the game pair represents the two player characters.

When I first played the games I didn't bother to learn the characters names so they don't have much to do with what I call the characters, but I did read the manga. When I read it, I read it offline translated by some fans and not the official translations, so the Japanese character names still stayed, so I call the male rival 'Green' and the unused character 'Blue'. I also call the gen three female character 'Blue' because in the manga she evolves as a character to wear those different clothes, but she's still the same person
