    I've had an '01 Tundra for about a month and a half. While I realize it isn't as large as modern half tons, coming from a minivan and a Dodge Dakota, it's definitely something I had to get used to. But the size of it is perfect. I don't feel tiny when I'm on the road, yet I don't feel as if I'm massively oversized when trying to park. Definitely a nice in-between vehicle. Really handy too when I have a bunch of tools in the bed, and can still fit all my groceries.
    What I like most about it, however, is indeed the power of the 4.7 V8. It's not the most powerful, for sure. But I don't feel like I have to push the petal to the floor to get it to move at a reasonable pace.

    I live in northern Canada where every year I’m either pulling someone out of a snow bank, hunting, or bringing garbage to the dump. There are more trucks than cars. If you’re in a big city, no need to buy a pick up.

    My super crew F150 is my family car and daily driver. My mustang is my weekend car or when I’m traveling alone. I appreciate the 4 doors and cargo space with 2 kids. There was a little bit of getting use the girth of the truck. After a month, i had no problem parking in tight spaces. My mom lives in the little Saigon area of Southern California and it was built for small Toyota and Honda. Mileage is comparable to my wife’s Edge. So all in all, I’m happy with my 2018 F150 as a family hauler.

      Yeah, the size wasn’t as big of a concern as I originally thought. I picked mine up in Hawaii, so I learned quickly where I could and couldn’t take it easily, but I really ran into very few issues. I still want to find a fox body or something to have as a weekend toy.

    We are thinking about trading in our Chrysler Town and Country 2010 for a used full size truck in the next year or two. It'll be mainly my truck, but I'll let my wife drive it in the winter because she has a longer commute and because it'll be better in the snow. Our kids are now 11 and 9. We hopefully can get 10+ years out of one. Michigan roads kill the underside of vehicles with the salt in the winter. I did have an 02 Explorer for 17 years and it was basically rusting from underneath and I no longer felt comfortable or safe driving it, espresso with my kids in it. I'm hopeful that it will be a suitable replacement for the van. Payload on the van absolutely sucks. Suspension just can't handle heavy loads when I have to pick up things from Home Depot or Lowes. I think a midsize truck would be too small for long trips. Our other car is a Fusion and the kids just don't have enough room for all their stuff and the trunk can't really fit everything in it for week long trips. I just have to decide if I want used with higher mileage or new with a bigger payment and longer term financing or a lease.

    • @freakfiveoh
      @freakfiveoh  4 роки тому +1

      I don't think you need to tow a lot to justify a truck. As far as family goes, if your kids are a little older, or at least in forward facing seats, you can probably get away with a smaller Tacoma or something similar size. If you need more space for rear facing then I will say the larger cab of my F-150 has been really nice.

    I have a wife, a 17 year old kid and a 90lbs dog. I am looking to get a pickup truck sometime next year 2020. I have watched your videos to try to see which would fit our needs best. The trouble is most all reviews focus on towing. My situation is a little different. My primary purpose is to haul the family and commute to work daily ( about 60/40 city/freeway) nothing extreme, and only about 50 miles a day round trip). The truck aspect is for the occasional trash haul, or helping someone move, or getting plywood at Home Depot for some project.
    With all that being said, I want the most comfortable room, best fuel economy, reliability, safety and price. What is your recommendation?
    Thank you

    • @freakfiveoh
      @freakfiveoh  3 роки тому +1

      If you’re looking for a F150, I’d say a 2015+ super crew with the 2.7 ecoboost might fit your needs well. I’ve never driven one personally, but they get decent mileage from what I hear and if you’re not towing a crazy amount, you’ll have more than enough power. If you need that V8 sound, every brand has a nice sounding V8 option.
      There are also the small diesel options out there if you can find one in your budget. If you need a cheaper option, look into the older Silverados when they introduced the LS motors.

    What size F150 do you have? Is it hard for your wife to parallel park it? My main concern of the F150 is if my wife and mother can handle the truck if they need to drive it randomly. Thank you for your time. Oh and they are both used to driving small SUV's with back up camera like tuscan and CR-V. Thanks

    • @freakfiveoh
      @freakfiveoh  2 роки тому

      Mine was the super crew cab with the 5.5 ft bed. I didn't parallel park too much, but I didn't find it all that hard. Having the rear camera and parking sensors make it a lot nicer.

I’m already 1,600 deep into repairs but I’m not bashing because my mechanic said my front suspension was probably original so that’s why one of my springs broke. I've had to do spend a little over $2k for my '01 Tundra in a month and a half of ownership. Needed new rotors (ones that it came with were warped) and shocks, as well as a new timing belt and water pump. Fortunately, everything else is pretty solid. I do want better tires before long though. The good news is that, once those repairs are done, you don't have to worry about them for awhile.

    • @Vlish
      @Vlish Рік тому

      I honestly wouldn't get the 2.7 ecoboost in any truck. You're asking a small engine to do a lot of work. If any ecoboost, I would recommend the 3.5 ecoboost engine. Even then, I'd recommend a truck that doesn't have turbos on them as they can be costly to repair a turbo if they go out. The turbos cost about $1000 just for one (not including labor), and these engines have two of them. Among my friends and I, we tend to prefer NA (naturally aspirated with no turbos or superchargers) engines since the turbos could potentially shorten the lifespan of the engine. Then again, we generally don't have trucks newer than the 2008 models.

    I think I saw a Hawaii license plate and was wondering if you have been driving that truck in Hawaii? Reason I ask Is because I am moving to Hawaii and have been debating on taking a truck to a small Island. Ill be going to Oahu and with the talk about traffic and theft I was curious what your opinion would be on driving a truck that size on an island like Oahu.

    • @freakfiveoh

      I did, I had it for about a year and a half while I was stationed in Hawaii. It was intimidating to drive it around at first, but I never really had any major issues. I didn't take it too many places I wasn't already familiar with, so parking was rarely too much of an issue. If you already own a truck, I wouldn't stress about it too much. If you're looking to buy one though, maybe look for something more Tacoma sized.

Filling up with gas varies a lot, but my tank is 35ish gallons. Right now it’s not bad, but when gas goes up it kinda sucks. I’ll get more than 450 miles to a tank though, so I don’t fill up often.

    did he say half ton truck? dude thats like lighter than racecars

    • @freakfiveoh
      @freakfiveoh  3 роки тому +1

      Half ton refers to the typical payload range these trucks had when they started becoming popular decades ago. Obviously most trucks can haul a lot more than that these days.

    I will never buy another f150, ever. Even if ford gave me one for free I would not take it. Mine sucks, has always sucked, will always suck. F is for ford

      Unfortunately sometimes you just get a bad car, or at least one that wasn’t taken good care of. Did you buy your Ford new or used?

      Don’t worry, I rings every time I catch myself saying it in a video. For some reason it’s an oddly hard habit to break.
