@@olive3700 I looked this up because of this comment! It was a moisturizer so your powder had something to stick to. Literally, moisturizer as primer! Pretty cool.
I was able to order some vanishing cream off Etsy....thought I would give it a try, and I am so glad I did. It makes my skin so soft, like silk, and I no longer need primer. It does also help smooth the skin out, so I need much less foundation.
Since most people use foundation instead of vanishing cream it’s practically unheard of now days. The best one available is made by Bèsame Cosmetics but most moisturisers work as a reasonable substitute. The difference is a proper vanishing cream makes the makeup easier to remove at the end of the day, because instead of being absorbed like a moisturiser it gives the makeup something to grip onto.
Everyone was trained to speak in a certain tv accent back then, you'll notice it if you watch a lot of old movies and stuff they all talk in a weird accent that exists no where but on tv or movies lol
So much is still the same! 1) Double cleansing with oil or cream based makeup remover following by a water based cleanser or soap 2) Cream or liquid bases are set with a powder 3) Blush was blended and lipsticks "matte" by blotting 4) Lip pencils for definition 5) Hair styled to suit face A lot of these are basic tips we still use!
right? It's interesting. I thought oil and balm cleansing was relatively new. silly me! There's not much new these days just us rediscovering things from the past. and i always wondered what cold cream was.
there is nothing new in the cosmetics world. you can find wonderful treatments, and additives that they now celebrate as new and fresh. i went to beautyschool and they showed us a video from the 80ies and they explained ingredients we thaugt were "new"... people forget and there are always new trends. the only thing that changes is the way to put on make up because the quality really changed in a positive way, in the 70ies still the make up was very greasy like theatre make up or camouflage. so you had different routines. and in theatreand film and they did contouring for dakades, its not just since kim k. i learned it too and this was years before kim k.
Desiree W My grandmother used Ponds too. My older sister had terrible acne when she was a teenager that left many blemishes because of the harsh medicine she was prescribed. She recently started using Ponds and her skin is near flawless. Obviously no cream will help remove years of acne scarring, but her skin tone is now uniform and her skin is softer.
I think they used to really take care of their skin back then, and washing was the foundation for clear/blemish free skin before applying the makeup :)
College for women was less about education & career & more about etiquette classes in disguise. They weren't educating women to earn money or build a career, they were grooming them to be housewives.
You could. It's called become a beautician. Someone who Is specialized in beauty and is qualified to teach future hair dressers, stylists of every hair type and a fashionista.
I prefer back then these days make up is in excess. To the point where she looks totally different. I mean OK for Instagram it's ok to do art forms but if you want to find a nice lad then try to be more the real you I guess. Coz when you take that make up off the boom!! He's gonna be like damn girl you ain't that pretty You fooled me
Wow this just gave me flashbacks to when i was a child (90's) and loved watching my grandmother do her makeup. She literally still did these techniques. I loved her vanity because it was so beautiful and classic.
And right after college you can get married and be a perfect housewife because your college courses were only about beauty and cooking, the only purpose women have... lol, that's how they thought.
+meowieberry Even today, colleges and the workplace only cater to full time workers and don't consider that a woman is /expected/ to cook and clean and take care of the babies. People don't tend to imagine a man that works full time but he also needs to make time to go home and cook and bathe the kids. That sort of expectation still exists, sadly. However, I think that a college course for grooming(that is optional, of course. as most courses are chosen by the student) would be beneficial. A lot of people struggle with hygiene, and don't know how to dress up for job interviews, work places, or even dates.
I actually adore this kind of makeup tutorials. Like, straightforward and simple. Most tutorials these days, you have to go through 3 minutes of "Hey, guys! So I was walking outside the other day blah blah blah I saw this beautiful product blah blah check out their product blah blah..." before you get to the actual tutorial. Also, no offense but I like makeup like this tbh. More than modern styles. I am basically ugly and whenever I try cat eye, strong brows, and Kylie lips I just look ridiculously... like an ugly drag queen. I tried this makeup style once and its simplicity made me relatively prettier. My grandma taught me this and it's probably the style I'll accept. 💙💙💙
aiea aie I agree 100% the hair and make up looks from the 40-60s were so beautiful! Because the approach was that of an artist using color and design theory to sculpt and shape and literally create your face!
What I learned: I need to switch all my beauty supplies to Pond's. Scrape the heck out of my face with a clean towel. Apply my rouge in the rocket science method then cover all that shit back up with powder. I should never leave the house in a hoodie because it kind of has a V-neck and my face is long. WATCH ME BE GORGEOUS NOW, MAMA!!
I used to think Cold Cream was a joke and then thought, well why has it been around for a hundred years if it doesn't work? and went ahead and tried it. Easiest makeup remover ever.
I swear, Pond's has done more for my skin than any other face wash. I don't have nearly the amount of skin issues I had when I used harsher, oil-free acne washes!
My mother still using ponds and she adopted from her mother.. she use ponds cold cream in winters, she use moisturizer these days and using ponds talc powder.. ponds face wash..
Imagine a whole knew generation looking back on us and thinking. "what the." while putting on little to nothing makeup or whatever the trend will be then, and also finding how we talk nowadays weird also. Fascinating how we gonna be this in decades or so
debtu right! I already see some trends that I know were all gonna hate.. mostly the Kardashian’s beauty looks with the mauve over plumped lip, the overly contoured face, and the ombré and balayage hair is so fucking ugly.. please woman STOP doing high contrast two tone hair the bright blonde tips and brown roots is sooo disgusting! Just stick to one color that matches your skin undertone and add hues of a coordinating color to add texture and depth! And omg if you are black or Asian please do not dye your hair blonde!
Contouring already looks retarded to anyone with an IQ higher than 60. If you are Kim Kardashian doing a professional shoot, it makes sense to contour because it has an effect with the bright flash of photos. If you're a regular woman going to work, you look retarded with brown stripes down your cheeks and nose -- it doesn't fool the regular eye, you dumbasses, it only fools the camera.

Keep in mind this wasn't long after World War II. Make-up had only recently stopped being a luxury item, and a lot of women and girls didn't have anything more than the basics
My2ndnephew WWII just ended. Women didn’t wear much eye makeup during the war, the ingredients that went into making eye makeup were used for the war effort, and if you found it, it was very expensive. So, instead, they used a little mascara, eyebrow pencil, and rouge and lipstick. That’s why very dark full lips were popular, also women wore their hair longer. Plus I believe this is presented for women who are in their late teens/early 20s, I imagine college age.
look at those victory rolls! must take an hour or so lol! a braid or two im done in like 5 minutes even Dutch braids are quick and easy once you master them
Watching this brought back memories of watching my mother put her makeup on back in 1951. She used her lipstick for rouge so the colors would match. She did the three dot and blend bit with it. I don't remember her using foundation (I can't stand the feel of it, myself) but she did use cold cream and powder.
Also, I love how in most of the videos, they all emphasize that makeup should be as subtle as possible, and anything that looked completely obvious on the face is unacceptable. They all enhance their natural looks instead of changing their entire bone structure with contouring. This is very informative! Thank you!
Right!! I'm obviously no one to tell others how to do their makeup, but I've *always* believed that makeup should *enhance* a woman's beauty, not change her into a completely new, unrecognizable person.
@@brittianyhightower1696 Right, well, no one is trying to stop them. If they want to look like clowns, then that's great! We're merely giving our opinions.

One day she told me to look for her in class and sit wth her. I scanned the room and didn't see her. I scanned again after class and still didn't see her when I heard a voice calling my name. After that she continued wearing her 10lbs of makeup but I never got over the shock of that day! She actually looked so much better natural too, which is the sad thing

I've been using Pond's Extra Rich Dry Skin Cream (the original formula with the baby blue top) since 1969!! Yep, that's right ..... 1969!!! I use this moisturizer every morning before makeup. It has served me extremely well over the years and nothing else that I've tried has ever compared for my before-makeup morning moisturizer. In the evening, I use much higher end/luxury cleansers, treatments, serums and moisturizers. I'm so grateful to the Pond's company for not changing their original formula and keeping it available all these years. So, as others have said here ... it's 2015 and I STILL am using Pond's!!!
Well, it's not always all about that. I wish it were that easy. I follow these 3 things and my skin still isn't a "clear glowing skin". Genetics, pollution and stress, for example, also play an important role.
@@354el She has 10 minutes to do a full makeup tutorial and educate the audience on the fundamentals of skincare and basic hygiene. She can’t give complete, comprehensive, universal-applicable advice in 10 minutes. But even in the brief summary: cleanse and heavy moisturize for dry skin, cleanse, light moisturize, and tone for oily skin. And everyone should sleep. That’s a pretty legitimate foundation.
Damn I honestly wish they had these classes now on how to take care of self like washing face, ears, and make up- as if it’s a requirement because I never had a mom or friends to learn from so I had neglected myself for the longest time not knowing what to prioritize other than work, school, food and sleep.
Make an appointment at Sephora when you can. They will teach you to do your makeup. Buy their expensive stuff once, then shop at Walmart or the drugstore once you know what you are doing.

As a rule *I* try to make my lipstick match my outfit, and if I have time, I make my nails match the two of them. Remember to never match your lips to your nails, but you can match your nails to your lips! ♥
I think I'm gonna try wearing more red lipstick. I usually do my eyes up and pair with a balmy natural lip, which looks cool, but I think I wanna try the light naturalish makeup but with a matte bold red lip. This inspired me.
The main difference I see between vintage and modern beauty is in the past there was a "right" and "wrong" way to look. Now people have more artistic freedom with their appearance
I definitely think that the artistic freedom in the modern beauty industry is a massive step forward, but I do think some of these rules have relevance today. Contouring for example is so hyped up, but if people actually chose their hairstyles to suit their face shape, it wouldn't be as necessary. I think the problem with modern beauty trends is that while the freedom is there, the reliance on brand names, particular products and methods of application mean that everyone looks relatively the same, whereas in the 40's, everyone had their own look and makeup was more about complimenting your natural beauty, and minimising flaws, rather than restructuring your entire face.
Erin Sullivan I agree!! I think makeup these days is awesome, and you're able to express yourself and its all accepted. Back in these days everything was so shady lol. So rude
Is it still made with the same ingredients it was made with then, however? Today everything is made cheaper and is of a lower quality then back in the glamour days.
Do you realize that these were kind of our UA-cam tutorials!! It’s crazy how humans don’t change . Time does , equipments do , but we’ve all been doing the same things but differently ! Sooooo coool
I remember as a little girl watching my grandma apply her lipstick like the young girl is. My grandma also said cold cream and I thought it was so cool. lol I tried to copy her but my friends would make fun of me. lol
(But if a late reply but...) So what if your friends make fun of you? Vintage styles are amazing! They can go wallow in their moderness. (Lol, no offence)
Makes me think of my grandma, I was to a large extent raised by my grandparents(born in the early 20s). I remember fondly her ”old fashioned” ways and values that I often cherish. In no way was she not adapting to the changing times, but she always kept certain manners intact. Many of my same-age peers probably found some of my manners slightly odd*lol*
Not really any different than what you'll find today though. In fact, I'd say it's worse. I can't tell you how many online articles I've scrolled past about "the best haircut for your face shape", "what clothes to wear with your body type", or "what colours look best with your skin's undertone (and what to avoid)". And today, vanishing cream, powder, and lipstick aren't enough as the perfect face anymore. For the ideal "flawless" look, you now also need to use primer, color correction, and contour. Your brows should be perfectly groomed and filled in, as apparently they frame your entire face. Your lashes probably aren't long or dark enough to bring good character to your eyes, so you'll want to curl them, wear mascara, and use an eyeliner as well. You don't want your lipstick to bleed, so add in a lip liner too. Then, seal it all in with a setting spray, so everything you just put on your face doesn't melt when you go anywhere with temperature above 70 degrees. Literally, hundreds and hundreds of strict dos and don'ts are still in practice today, people are just more hush-hush about their existence. At least back in the time of this video, they were upfront about it...
Okay, why is this not a legit college course? Do you know how many girls I know who don't know how to do makeup!? Or their hair (including myself)?! This would actually be *worth* my time and money.
Well these classes were sometimes required because girls were not allowed to take real classes, they were thought to be too dumb and should only worry about their beauty and cooking. So really it isn't as wonderful as it seems.
meowieberry And yet my 1890s finishing school manual teaches them how to keep accounts, manage people (aka the household) how to arrange travel, how to keep up with current events, how to debate... So really, they weren't as "oppressed" as you've been lead to believe.
IceQueen975 There's a difference between being taught something and actually being allowed to take action on that. Women were oppressed, they were expected to be educated but not to actually get involved in the "men's" world.

Max factor! There even is a 1930's makeup video where Max factor himself is doing the makeup
Everyone back then had amazing voices 😍
Everyone was trained to speak in a certain tv accent back then, you'll notice it if you watch a lot of old movies and stuff they all talk in a weird accent that exists no where but on tv or movies lol
I think they call that "Transatlantic Accent"
+Charlie McVey yeah, i here old people talk and there accents hardly sound different than ours. the tv accent back then was taught, not natural
+Calikid331 hear*
it's just elocution
I love how making odd faces while putting on/ taking off makeup has always been around.
So much is still the same!
1) Double cleansing with oil or cream based makeup remover following by a water based cleanser or soap
2) Cream or liquid bases are set with a powder
3) Blush was blended and lipsticks "matte" by blotting
4) Lip pencils for definition
5) Hair styled to suit face
A lot of these are basic tips we still use!
of course.
MissOyin My Grandma was not into makeup but always wore Ponds cold cream. She had beautiful skin
Damn a college course on how to properly wash your face 😲
i need to take that course.
I have a college degree in facewashing
I think they used to really take care of their skin back then, and washing was the foundation for clear/blemish free skin before applying the makeup :)
College for women was less about education & career & more about etiquette classes in disguise. They weren't educating women to earn money or build a career, they were grooming them to be housewives.

Imagine getting college credit for a class on how to wash your face
If you haven't mastered washing your face before college, you really aren't college material.
@@alissunwolf8249 You won't believe how many dumb people go to college.
"But you don't have to go to college to know how to wash your face." Whew, what a relief!🤣
I've sat next to people who could've used that class.
You could. It's called become a beautician. Someone who Is specialized in beauty and is qualified to teach future hair dressers, stylists of every hair type and a fashionista.

I think they would be shocked but find it fascinating.

Wow this just gave me flashbacks to when i was a child (90's) and loved watching my grandmother do her makeup. She literally still did these techniques. I loved her vanity because it was so beautiful and classic.
Credits in college for grooming. I'll take that.
Yass i need that this vid had actually taught me something
And right after college you can get married and be a perfect housewife because your college courses were only about beauty and cooking, the only purpose women have... lol, that's how they thought.
really? I mostly looked like a hobo in my college years lol. too many early classes.
+Tracy We actually have a class like that in our university, but it's only given to certain college courses.
I doubt that you are ugly. Everyone is pretty in their own way 😊 I like this style too :) It's nice, simple, and more natural 😀
aiea aie yeah same I came for the tutorial not your whole life story
@@goodbye7236 thenn why did you read it?..
aiea aie I agree 100% the hair and make up looks from the 40-60s were so beautiful! Because the approach was that of an artist using color and design theory to sculpt and shape and literally create your face!
Less is more. Also you are not ugly. Just because a certain make up style doesn't suit you. It's ok to be beautiful in your own way.

debtu right!
If you are Kim Kardashian doing a professional shoot, it makes sense to contour because it has an effect with the bright flash of photos. they didn't
Trans-Atlantic accent. Listen to Katharine Hepburn in one of her films, i.e. "Philadelphia Story."
They spoke clearly with no vocal fry or slurring of the words.
Interesting how eyes and eyebrows were not mentioned.
Or contour and highlight.
Exactly! They did absolutely nothing to the eyes. But then in the '50s ans '60s they made up for that, haha
My2ndnephew I think many women didn't wear eye makeup and maybe they either trimmed their brows the same way or just didn't care? Idk

Some of these tips are actually good!
Yeah they had pretty good makeup stuff back then but also some weird rules
Some, but seeing the lady rub her face hard and pulling away from the center....horrifying. Winkles, seriously wrinkles..
Watching this brought back memories of watching my mother put her makeup on back in 1951. She used her lipstick for rouge so the colors would match. She did the three dot and blend bit with it. I don't remember her using foundation (I can't stand the feel of it, myself) but she did use cold cream and powder.
Ditto!
The packaging for the products they used, OMG. I love the vintage looks.
Yep, and higher end products used solid gold
Also, I love how in most of the videos, they all emphasize that makeup should be as subtle as possible, and anything that looked completely obvious on the face is unacceptable. They all enhance their natural looks instead of changing their entire bone structure with contouring. This is very informative! Thank you!
Right!! I'm obviously no one to tell others how to do their makeup, but I've *always* believed that makeup should *enhance* a woman's beauty, not change her into a completely new, unrecognizable person.
Makeup is about self expression. If someone wants to paint on a different expression that's their business.

I strongly agree.
I think these women would faint if they would see our makeup nowadays. I'm glad I'm still only using foundation and lipstick))

People now are just to sensitive
+Mikaela McCreary No, people are just more aware
At least back in the time of this video, they were upfront about it...
true
Okay, why is this not a legit college course? Do you know how many girls I know who don't know how to do makeup!? Or their hair (including myself)?! This would actually be *worth* my time and money.
I'm pretty sure some colleges still do classes on applying make up, not so much as a make up artist, but personal use
