Good question. I really don't know any girls in high school except my nieces, but we're not that close so I don't know how it goes with them. Good manners should always be uppermost and should work at any time.
Sad to see it, but I see alot of kids not learning how to plan, study or prioritize. Or most importantly, kids who dont know boundries. I remember being hassed in college dorms for being awkward ( I was new to thier lifestyle, I grew up in a cult and was dealing with getting out of it) ; but I wasnt the one interrupting do not disturb signs, or not knocking. I like to prepare for an event or a guest coming over, not be last minute, even if they are friends. These kids now point fingers at others when they should point at themselves for being rude.

Things weren't really like this at the time. There were strict "morality" standards for TV when this was made. Which is why everything from the time looks overwhelmingly "wholesome" like this. It wasn't that there weren't serious issues going on or that some people were miserable. It was that depicting anything other than American exeptionalism could have you shut down by the government. It was censorship.
"Meow Meow" was a joke where the girl was saying the boys were being catty. Catty is not cat-calling. It's a behavior where people are being petty. If you've ever seen a movie where they have typically women being subtly mean to each other, like a fashionista giving mean compliments like "I love how you'll just wear anything and don't care how you look," that's being catty. To be fair, this is an educational video. Most of the time teens spoke like teens today speak (more casually and with swears). Check the original Grease play before it became flandirazed. That's a bit more of how teens in the 50s acted like. Another example is Rise of the Pink Ladies or Stand By Me. But i do admit it was more "romantic" in a way, more personal. Because they didn't have texting.
It's interesting to note that what popularity was back then - common sense, being friendly and respecting others - is the complete opposite of what happens these days ; *edit - In mainstream media.

Oh yes, sitting on the bottom of the stairs in the cold hallway chatting and twiddling the wire while your dad says "are you going to be much longer?". I loved old phones, the lovely purring tones and there was something satisfying about dialling, the way it went fast til you hit the stopper and then whirred it's way slowly back. I miss that. Also you could keep all your friends' numbers in your head because you only had to remember six digits. I have trouble remembering my own number nowadays let alone anyone else's!
My Mom was in high school in the 40's. Watching these kind of videos kind of gives me a glimpse of what her life would have been like. She graduated in 1944.
My mother was in high school in the 1940s. She told of wishing aloud that she were popular. Her father said, "I'll tell you how to be popular!" Her mother butted in, "No, you won't!".
American society was also more homogenous back then-- it's easier to communicate with people who have similar values, upbringing, and culture as you. Diversity is wonderful, though I'd argue that we're still adjusting to it as a society-- miscommunication, misunderstanding, and ignorance all lead to prejudice, which leads to hate and violence if it's not corrected. We've seen a lot of that, especially in recent years, as society further shifts. We'll get there, just need to keep an open and clear mind, and to keep looking out for one another.

I also learned how to be assertive and respectful instead of insulting and entitled. Shockingly, I get my way far more often when I argue ideas and opinions instead of attacking people and places. A bit more updated than these once? Remember that being nice is the start, but never forget to show who you are. Chivalry and too much compliments are nothing without an interesting personality. What are some cool things you know? Any special interests that is a fun conversation piece? Ask more questions than you answer, do follow up questions and listen. I myself often gets all hung up on what I am going to say after they are done and most people can notice that easily. If you are not experienced in how to get closer to someone physical or emotional, don´t be afraid of seeing what they do first. Not being obvious enough is better than making someone uncomfortable, once one have done so it´s very hard to find the way back. And if the attraction isn´t there, don´t try to force it. It´s like a gay guy begging a straight guy for a chance at a date. If there is no "spark" from their side that can´t force themselves in to it how ever much time they give. I used to paint up a picture of how we would be the one true couple and how happy we would be together already after the first couple of dates And when it didn´t work out I would deflate and feel as if I´d lost something that wasn´t really there from the start. Remember to be the best and happiest you and to learn to be comfortable with yourself. You are a whole and worthy individual on your own. You do not have to be completed through someone else. Romance and sex is awesome, but it´s a + not a need. Be awesome and some day you will find someone just as awesome to get together and be awesome with!

I like how the video gives advice to the guys to consider what the girl would like to do on a date as to not put her entirely on the spot to plan the whole thing. Coming out of a relationship where my BF never planned anything, took me to do whatever he wanted to do, and always relied on me to come up with the well-thought out dates --- this is SOLID advice. I don't know if young people were actually like that back then, or if this was just what adults encouraged young people to be like. My parents grew up in the 50's and 60's (my mom was born in 1951, and my dad was born in 1949), and they said that things like bullying and cliques existed back then, just like they do now. So, I wouldn't look at educational films from this era as an indicator of what life was like back then; I'd see them as an indicator of the pro-social values that were encouraged back then.

These films were made for schools. They were shown in health class or the like. They were supposed to represent the ideal or instruct kids how to behave with one another. They also had grooming, health, social and study habits, etc... This channel presents those films and they are fun to watch.
I know what you mean but my family has told me that although things were not perfect and not always like this they were more similar to this than they are now. They should show these films and modern versions of them to today's kids to help them with manners and etiquette.

Okay but i just loved how before they went out Wally made sure that Carolyne told her parents that they would be home by this hour. Why does everyone think that this is an actual representation of high school life and teenage behavior in the 40s and 50s? We've all seen those cheesy videos and short films from the early 2000s about drugs, respect, not talking to strangers, etc, etc. Imagine your grandkid watching that in the future and believing that's what school life or society was like when that couldn't have been further from the truth.
My grandparents who were actually there always told me stories of their youth and how they acted etc. This is a good representation of how manners were so important back in the day.
This is also a production, not an accurate protease on what life was actually like back then, like how today teens ideals are to be healthy, carefree, skinny, but obviously not everyone is like that, it’s just the ideals

This was my grandmas generation, she just passed away this year at 91 (from Covid). But I just wanted to say even when she got admitted to the hospital all she really cared about was for us to bring her red lipstick from home. @@xerilaun I think you romanticize history. Times were hard the 40s, food rationing, gas rationing, air raid drills, family members fighting a World War, not knowing if they'd come back. Then when the war was over, a lot of guys had PTSD. And also remember, all if that was preceded by the Great Depression. My grandmother kept her last ration book. Every time we'd start complaining about stuff she'd pull it out of her junk drawer and tell us about sacrifice. All 4 of her brothers and a sister came back. I think every era has it's difficulties. We got covid and bad leadership, economic shut down for one very bad year, and maybe a second bad year. I just wouldn't minimalize what your great grandparents went through.

If you look at my sister's senior yearbook (1964) and mine (1968), you will find teens looked older than they do today at that age. It was even more so in the 40's. We were very much a product of our parents and grandparents who grew up in the Depression. If you had a stable family life (Divorce was much more rare and frowned upon back then so everything looked "honky-dorry"), kids were raised to the litany of "What would the neighbors think?" and they dressed and comported themselves accordingly. It was shortly after I graduated and into the early 70's that teens began to rebel and start their own trends and notions and breaking away from the norm. Yes, there were the beatniks in the 50's but, for most of us, they seemed to be like a culture from a different country and definitely not one to emulate. So, yes, old photos of teens had them looking much ollder than teens of today. The actors portrayal is not that far-fethced.

Isn't it surreal to see people interacting so effortlessly. People spoke to eachother more often so they were good at it, enunciating every word, pausing at the right moments, listening to the other person with interest. Now people do not make eye contact or acknowledge eachother, everyone has social anxiety and they do not know how to hold a conversation, they feel the need to congratulate themselves because they managed to go grocery shopping, take a shower, or even get out of bed. It's amazing how much life has changed.
This is a fun insight into my own mother's high school experience. She is long gone now and was an "old mom" when I was born so we were more than a generation apart. I could only imagine but this helps. She was in theater too and had the romantic heart of every other school girl. Thanks for posting this.
Oh I just love this video. I know it’s from the 1940s but I was dating in the early 80s and I always picked really nice guys today. They would always call in advance and they would come to the door and meet my parents and have me home at the right time. I had a really good time dating when I was a teenager. I had friends that would date these guys that would call them at the last minute or never show up and not treat them very well. Most of these girls are divorced and are alone. I have been married for nearly 31 years to the same man. I am blessed and thankful.

@Anita McGuire People with curly textured hair produce less sebum and most of that doesn't reach the hair shaft, so they need to use hair cleansers that don't contain sulphates like soap does. Aside from a lot of moisturizing, combing when dry is also a no-no because it breaks the curl pattern and just produces a bushy, frizzy mass. I'm assuming you have a wavier pattern that sets into curls afterwards? Anyway, glad you found what works for you!

Oh yes, sitting on the bottom of the stairs in the cold hallway chatting and twiddling the wire while your dad says "are you going to be much longer?". I loved old phones, the lovely purring tones and there was something satisfying about dialling, the way it went fast til you hit the stopper and then whirred it's way slowly back. I miss that. Also you could keep all your friends' numbers in your head because you only had to remember six digits. I have trouble remembering my own number nowadays let alone anyone else's!

American society was also more homogenous back then-- it's easier to communicate with people who have similar values, upbringing, and culture as you. Diversity is wonderful, though I'd argue that we're still adjusting to it as a society-- miscommunication, misunderstanding, and ignorance all lead to prejudice, which leads to hate and violence if it's not corrected. We've seen a lot of that, especially in recent years, as society further shifts. We'll get there, just need to keep an open and clear mind, and to keep looking out for one another.

orry to hear. Do you want to hear what I´ve learnt about dating after many years of failed attempts? I don´t mean to preach so you don´t have to take it if you don´t want to. A bit more updated than these once?
Remember that being nice is the start, but never forget to show who you are. Chivalry and too much compliments are nothing without an interesting personality. What are some cool things you know? Any special interests that is a fun conversation piece? Ask more questions than you answer, do follow up questions and listen. I myself often gets all hung up on what I am going to say after they are done and most people can notice that easily.
If you are not experienced in how to get closer to someone physical or emotional, don´t be afraid of seeing what they do first. Not being obvious enough is better than making someone uncomfortable, once one have done so it´s very hard to find the way back.
And if the attraction isn´t there, don´t try to force it. It´s like a gay guy begging a straight guy for a chance at a date. If there is no "spark" from their side that can´t force themselves in to it how ever much time they give.
I used to paint up a picture of how we would be the one true couple and how happy we would be together already after the first couple of dates And when it didn´t work out I would deflate and feel as if I´d lost something that wasn´t really there from the start.
Remember to be the best and happiest you and to learn to be comfortable with yourself. You are a whole and worthy individual on your own. You do not have to be completed through someone else. Romance and sex is awesome, but it´s a + not a need.
Be awesome and some day you will find someone just as awesome to get together and be awesome with!

I don't know if young people were actually like that back then, or if this was just what adults encouraged young people to be like. My parents grew up in the 50's and 60's (my mom was born in 1951, and my dad was born in 1949), and they said that things like bullying and cliques existed back then, just like they do now. So, I wouldn't look at educational films from this era as an indicator of what life was like back then; I'd see them as an indicator of the pro-social values that were encouraged back then.
Bullying and cliques have always existed and always will exist (unfortunately 😞).

These films were made for schools. They were shown in health class or the like. They were supposed to represent the ideal or instruct kids how to behave with one another. They also had grooming, health, social and study habits, etc... This channel presents those films and they are fun to watch.
I know what you mean but my family has told me that although things were not perfect and not always like this they were more similar to this than they are now. They should show these films and modern versions of them to today's kids to help them with manners and etiquette.

Then when the war was over, a lot of guys had PTSD. And also remember, all if that was preceded by the Great Depression. My grandmother kept her last ration book. Every time we'd start complaining about stuff she'd pull it out of her junk drawer and tell us about sacrifice. All 4 of her brothers and a sister came back. I think every era has it's difficulties. We got covid and bad leadership, economic shut down for one very bad year, and maybe a second bad year. I just wouldn't minimalize what your great grandparents went through.

If you look at my sister's senior yearbook (1964) and mine (1968), you will find teens looked older than they do today at that age. It was even more so in the 40's. We were very much a product of our parents and grandparents who grew up in the Depression. If you had a stable family life (Divorce was much more rare and frowned upon back then so everything looked "honky-dorry"), kids were raised to the litany of "What would the neighbors think?" and they dressed and comported themselves accordingly. It was shortly after I graduated and into the early 70's that teens began to rebel and start their own trends and notions and breaking away from the norm. Yes, there were the beatniks in the 50's but, for most of us, they seemed to be like a culture from a different country and definitely not one to emulate. So, yes, old photos of teens had them looking much ollder than teens of today. The actors portrayal is not that far-fethced.
And teenagers had after school jobs so they could help support their family

They're probably actors. If not then it's probably because they smoked. Smoking was super common at the time. Smoking really ages people.

Isn't it surreal to see people interacting so effortlessly. People spoke to eachother more often so they were good at it, enunciating every word, pausing at the right moments, listening to the other person with interest. Now people do not make eye contact or acknowledge eachother, everyone has social anxiety and they do not know how to hold a conversation, they feel the need to congratulate themselves because they managed to go grocery shopping, take a shower, or even get out of bed. It's amazing how much life has changed.

This is a fun insight into my own mother's high school experience. She is long gone now and was an "old mom" when I was born so we were more than a generation apart. I could only imagine but this helps. She was in theater too and had the romantic heart of every other school girl. Thanks for posting this.
My mom was a teenager in the 40’s.....she wore her hair this way too. She also used a fountain pen like this one....what a nice set of memories!

Oh I just love this video. I know it’s from the 1940s but I was dating in the early 80s and I always picked really nice guys today. They would always call in advance and they would come to the door and meet my parents and have me home at the right time. I had a really good time dating when I was a teenager. I had friends that would date these guys that would call them at the last minute or never show up and not treat them very well. Most of these girls are divorced and are alone. I have been married for nearly 31 years to the same man. I am blessed and thankful.
My 5 year old sis asked me once, "what type of cell phones did they have back then?" My mind: you poor soul

@Anita McGuire People with curly textured hair produce less sebum and most of that doesn't reach the hair shaft, so they need to use hair cleansers that don't contain sulphates like soap does. Aside from a lot of moisturizing, combing when dry is also a no-no because it breaks the curl pattern and just produces a bushy, frizzy mass. I'm assuming you have a wavier pattern that sets into curls afterwards? Anyway, glad you found what works for you!
