Be neat and tidy, buy quality over quantity and keep it in good condition, don't be wasteful or frivolous. Sounds perfect to me. How many of us have our shoes or clothing repaired these days?
If you keep capsule wardrobe, you'll find it much more time consuming and economical to have your clothing, shoes and accessories fixed, unless it is really a cheap item. Shopping is a nightmare where I live, Sunday is a day off so it's just Saturday or Friday afternoon after work, the time where half of the city is doing the same thing at the same location.
I clean my own shoes and take them to the cobbler for repair if necessary/worth keeping. Having a good tailor is of great value when it comes to looking sharp with well-fitted clothes or upcycling vintage clothes, but I strive to buy things that fit correctly as they are.
My mom was a teacher from 1943-1973. This is the way that she and several other of her fellow teachers dresses heels and all. I have several yearbooks featuring her along with some of their fellow teachers and they looked nice and so did the students.
I just recently started going to a tailor, and WOW, WHAT a difference! It’s such a shame, nothing is meant to fit anyone these days; all these clothes are cheap in feel and appearance and the “trend” right now is oversized, baggy clothing. But when everything fits you just right and looks like it was made for you and only you… something magical happens! Really, everyone, invest in quality clothing and a good tailor. It’s crazy how people will notice!

That’s exactly what Marilyn Monroe did. Her entire “off work” wardrobe was very small in quantity but very high in quality and every piece was tailored just for her. She must have watched this video because way before she even began modeling she wrote letters to her half sister telling her how she was so grateful for having her “hand-me-downs” altered to fit her.

When I miss my grandmother (passed away 2 years ago at 101), I watch these... My grandma never talked about clothes makeup and hair, but she pronounced her words rather like this.
True glamor comes from within. It does not matter how beautiful a person is if they open their mouth and rudeness comes out. Glamor goes out the window.lol
not only huge plastic nails but have facial piercing, smoke, wear yoga pants or leggings paired with see-through top, smoking, drinking, swearing, nose down in their phone while talking to someone without even looking at them. she's rolling in her grave.
@julijakeit Besides the smoking and constantly looking at their phones, everything you listed there is perfectly fine. Swearing is a way to express emotion. What I assume you’d like to call “slutty” clothing and facial piercings is a way to express their character. And when responsibly drinking, they can a have a wonderful time with friends and others. I do, however, understand why you aren’t keen on today’s trends, and I’m not forcing you to change your mind or reconsider, I just want you to know that the things you listed makes many people happy, and that’s all what should matter.
julijakeit i think yoga pants and facial piercings are also okay. stuff like that to express yourself is good as long as you aren’t hurting anybody. i think smoking and swearing and drinking is pretty unattractive though.
This is actually pretty decent advice. You could use it for dressing for a job interview and general everyday use too like how it's good to stand up straight and be put together. It makes people take you more seriously which is still true today.

Mary (the lady in the video) would probably faint if she saw my posture from carrying my bookbag everywhere and being hunched over a computer or paper all day doing work.
Right?! I graduated high school last year with honors courses and sports and I had to carry two huge backpacks just to fit all my textbooks and equipment. I looked like a turtle. My posture was horrible and my back hurt all the time
Charm also depends on either really caring how other people feel, or being a damn good actor. People in the latter category can be pretty scary sometimes.
This reminds me of my early days when we were judged on our looks to a point of cruelty. God forbid you had a disability in these days. At 13 I was a dancer but developed a genetic condition called ankylosing spondylitis and it effected my posture and now I have a hunch back not to mention other problems. Undiagnosed for decades I can't count how many times I was told to watch my posture. No one knew it wasn't my fault not even me.

I don't think they were nearly as neurotic about their looks as people are now. With social media girls are competing with high makeup and fake filters and so feeling beautiful is almost impossible or a short-lived throne. These tips aren't supposed to make you feel bad; they are about putting yourself together so you're NOT thinking about your looks but rather focusing on others and whatever the conversation is. Self respect and respect for others; im still learning and Noone is perfect but if anything is needed right now in our culture its women to be and move with dignity. We women are the pinnacle of God's creation. Rant over lol
What a breath of fresh air to see someone give real and direct advice. Nowadays everyone is too scared of getting cancelled to say anything other than “we’re all perfect/ you do you”
Teaching positivity is bad? what? Look, I don't like cancel culture either but telling someone with acne or excema they look good and not to let others bully them is NOT a bad thing.
i agree and disagree, her advice is good about hygiene and good posture n all, but i think that everyone should have a choice on how to dress whether it's "trashy or classy," since you only live once and it's ultimately their choice, which is why people nowadays say "you do you"
Good posture is SO important for adolescent girls especially, since they're very prone to developing scoliosis at that age >.> I did; thankfully my doctor caught it before it got too bad, and basically told me to stop wearing my backpack on one shoulder. But as a massage therapist I see SO many people with muscles aches, soft tissue adhesions, etc that were probably brought upon, or at least exacerbated by, bad posture. So even if you don't care about how you look, good posture helps avoid pain!
This makes me want to start going out wearing old fashioned clothes, if only they were still in style and I could find them everywhere 😩 I just started sewing my own clothes

There is also the small detail of that some of her clothes were made by herself and she is mentioned in some of the other short stories to make or fix clothes for other people.

The different and more strict manners into looking a certain way as a lady in the olden days was something certainly unique to us, in the present and nice to preserve from a modern view but I wouldn’t say I would like to go back- at all. When I was in nursing school they lined us up and critiqued our appearance. Our white shoes had to be cleaned and polished. Dresses had to be 3 inches below the knee. We had to wear white hose. Hair (collar length or longer) had to be put up neatly. We always wore the nurses cap. In those days we took pride in our appearance and you could certainly differentiate between a nurse, orderly and a candy stripper.
I’m a little ashamed but mostly fascinated to say that the information in these videos feels pretty foreign to me. I was never taught to care much about these things. Sometimes I think people were too judgmental and worried about appearances back then, but in some ways, like in this video, their viewpoint was such a welcoming dose of self discipline, order, cleanliness, and self respect. I also love how the girls in the crowd have such a good attitude about being called out. I mean, I know they are actors, but the attitude portrayed is that being corrected a little now and then is totally normal and natural and not a big deal. It seems like we are more prone to biting back at correction now days, and there is perhaps a little too much tip-toeing around feelings.

I WONDER WHY EVERYTHING BAGGY ,OVERSIZED ABD CHEAP AND MISSHAPEN AND PLASTIC........WOULD I GE CALLED A CONSPIRACY THEORIST....OR IS IT JUST ANOTHER COINCIDENCE....ALL INTENTIONAL NO ONE LOOKS SMART....clithes are cheap needle and thread, don't make me laugh. HOW CAN IT BE WE ASK .....we have designers, fashion shows ,influencers....you know them that were paid to push the jab they push the " fashion"....HOW CAN IT BE WE ASK.....BECAUSE WE LET IT HAPPEN...AND ONLY WE CAN CHANGE IT.
If we could afford a tailor for every piece of clothing, I'm sure many of us would. I would love to dress like Princess Catherine.
@@ElizabethJohn3 I hear what you are saying, but I would encourage you to learn to sew so you can do it yourself.
That’s why it’s called ready to wear. You seriously can’t expect mass clothing to fit every body type. It was never meant to be a perfect fit.
When I was in high school (80s) we had Home Ec. classes and Etiquette courses. I don't think schools offer those extra courses anymore, they should. They were a lot of fun.

I did in Junior High for a Trimester
We still do Home Ec. But, not for Etiquette.
If they are going to have parenting courses, that is good, but in that case it should be compulsory for boys and girls... and pair up with a daycare occasionally so they experience real kids... might be good birth control.
Nope not anymore now its civics which tbh I feel like is needed more than home ec we need to know how to file taxes and how to manage our own household were not aiming for the attention of a man nowadays to take care of us we're doing our own thing
I feel like the women of the 40s and 50s were more confident than today's women... this woman is a good mother hen taking care of her young chicks being blunt and knowledgeable .
1:09 They put others before themselves. These days women are taught to be "fierce" which is all about glorifying yourself. Which never breeds real confidence.
@@swankelly nope. As a female I can say I'm not confident because the standards have gotten so fucking high and bizarre and impossible to reach, it's simply not realistic to love yourself. These very important principles of poise, beauty, and charm are truly lacking in the culture of our young people of today and should be re-introduced again!! Being a gracious, charming woman speaks of good class and great upbringing as well! Keep posting!
You know, you can appreciate this advice without dragging women of today.
A Janeau THANK YOU the misogyny in this comment section is unbelievable!!

Why are comments on vintage videos always so annoying? The ones complaining and putting down women don’t even put effort forth in achieving the things they say are ‘better’ lol I like classic and vintage style but I don’t think it’s better than current fashions. Let people enjoy what they want... and if you’re going to shame other people, at least practice what you preach because most of you hateful people definitely aren’t living the ‘pure, perfect, poised, glamorously well dressed and well mannered’ life.
I've been trying to do research on "finishing schools" of the 19th century and much amazed that they were still following the same advice in the 1940's. I appreciate your downloading this so much! Thank you.
My mom was born in 1941 and is 82 now - I’m always grateful she knew how to sew and we sewed things together because now I can make my own clothes and alter ready-to-wear to fit better and also do basic repairs. It definitely increases confidence when your clothes fit well and feel good on ❤️👍😁
It's sort of interesting to see the change in culture, the emphasis on cleaning and repairing what you have as opposed to throwing it out and buying new
I love these clothes and hair and makeup. People had a sense of pride about themselves.
Imagine how this lady would feel if she is teleported to this century where girls wear huge plastic nails 😂😂
Those are still vulgar.
not only huge plastic nails but have facial piercing, smoke, wear yoga pants or leggings paired with see-through top, smoking, drinking, swearing, nose down in their phone while talking to someone without even looking at them. she's rolling in her grave.
@julijakeit
Besides the smoking and constantly looking at their phones, everything you listed there is perfectly fine.
@Ew No preach 🙌🏻✨
julijakeit i think yoga pants and facial piercings are also okay. stuff like that to express yourself is good as long as you aren’t hurting anybody. i think smoking and swearing and drinking is pretty unattractive though.
This is actually pretty decent advice. You could use it for dressing for a job interview and general everyday use too like how it's good to stand up straight and be put together. It makes people take you more seriously which is still true today.
I love the way they talked back then. So refined.
"Her bag was much too big for such a small girl... she thought she had to carry everything she owned around with her."
Oh honey, if only you knew how big they'd get 😂 I swear I could fit in some of my bags haha
As a girl i never liked to wear very long nails and the "claws are for CATS!" bit was hilarious to me 😂
Same but I looove long nails. I dunno, there’s just something really pretty about them
I love old fashioned glamour. Much classier than the tough look of today's fashion
Stella Ercolani i love combining the two
I agree. Today’s fashion rules seem to show a young girl how to look like a street walker. It’s so ugly and sad to see so many young women buy into this “fashion”.
Connie Henson If the women like it and it does no harm then it's fine right as fashion on changes and now more than ever we have very diverse styles some girls look like a "street walker" as you say as it suits them and others dress more modestly as it suits their taste, to each there own right?
Connie Henson you’ve been indoctrinated by misogynistic social and cultural constructs
@@0208connie oh look, judgement from the peanut gallery! how these women looked would've been considered a 'streetwalker' only a few decades before. Flappers were told they looked like streetwalkers. Times change, I too love this look but my first reaction to modern fashion is that it's not for me. Your fashion taste is mature, your mind is not. Grow up.
What would this woman have done with backpack posture.
My posture was horrible and my back hurt all the time
I keep good posture by simply doing some pushups every now and again, and pushing through the pain to keep it right.
Or cell phone posture
Her posture seems a bit hunched over too.

Itismeagainb Itisnotme unfortunately most people in the comments don’t understand that it wasn’t so easy for non white and non disabled woman.
Thanks for this comment. I love these old videos because of the style and clothes etc but I feel like people tend to think everything was perfect back on the " old good days " and it was not perfect at all. And also I am so sorry for what you went through! :(
I have scoliosis and it hurts to sit or stand up straight for long periods of time.
Yup I have EDS and the same ankylosing spondylitis - it's a bit of misery. Hugs!
Classic style, manners, and good posture will never go out of style. This video is informational! Loved it.

What a breath of fresh air to see someone give real and direct advice. Nowadays everyone is too scared of getting cancelled to say anything other than “we’re all perfect/ you do you”
Teaching positivity is bad? what? Look, I don't like cancel culture either but telling someone with acne or excema they look good and not to let others bully them is NOT a bad thing.
i agree and disagree, her advice is good about hygiene and good posture n all, but i think that everyone should have a choice on how to dress whether it's "trashy or classy," since you only live once and it's ultimately their choice, which is why people nowadays say "you do you"
She is a good teacher. She's clear and concise.
Idk why but i like the way they talk and the static noises make it better

I did a short story series for a friend of mine and there’s a scene in the second part where one of the main characters uses the time before lights out to mead, iron and use cleaning fluid on her dresses before putting them away neatly and sorting out the outfit she is going to wear the next day for school, inspired by the Ethel and Louis in this video.

I like how self expression through looks is so much more broad now- many things are acceptable which to me, is good! Interesting and so uplifting. There's no reason women of today cannot look like this. It's just a matter of starting the trend. With all the blogs and cell phone cameras. the tip she gave for charm in the beginning of the video really was spot on.
When I was in nursing school they lined us up and critiqued our appearance. Our white shoes had to be cleaned and polished. Dresses had to be 3 inches below the knee. We had to wear white hose. Hair (collar length or longer) had to be put up neatly. We always wore the nurses cap.
And not for nothing, but that snotty " .... same girl, after she'd been with me for 2 weeks" saying how much better the girl was dressed & groomed.
