    My mom, who was born in 1939, taught me all these tricks. But she said never wear brown eyeliner, always black. And her eyeliner was in a cake form where you wet the brush and swirled it in the eyeliner cake. And she always wore Max Factor or Ultima 2. And she used a powder that had cornstarch in it and I think they still make it. I told her her skin smelled like taco shells 😂

    • @Verbsdescribeus
      @Verbsdescribeus 3 роки тому +115

      i say they opposite - black eyeliner makes your features look harsher than they are, so brown eyeliner is a more natural choice

    • @thedarkjotun
      @thedarkjotun 3 роки тому +61

      @@Verbsdescribeus yes, I prefer brown eyeliner too - it generally comes down to personal preference and the kind of look you’re going for I guess (eg. mod 60s looks seemed to have heavier-looking dark eyeliner whereas the golden era of Hollywood 30s looks seemed to have more of the softest eyeliner in order to put more emphasis on very long lashes) but I like to follow the old tricks of Marilyn Monroe’s makeup artist and in fact he actually used brown eyeliner on her for the signature look she had throughout most of the 50s, until the last 2 years of her life which were the 60s so her makeup changed with the evolving style of the time and therefore looked to be black thicker eyeliner than she used to wear - but it irritates me to no end when everyone these days doing the ‘iconic’ Marilyn look swears that the must-have is sharp black winged eyeliner, the inaccuracy, if only they researched and knew 😩😂

    • @thedarkjotun
      @thedarkjotun 3 роки тому +16

      Also I love that your mum had one of those cake eyeliners, that’s so cool 😍 I bet she was one of the lucky ones who could pull off black eyeliner so well and that’s probably why she wore it ✨ and yes Max Factor was so much more popular back in the day, my grandma and mum used to love it, nowadays I rarely hear of it anymore and never see ads for it alongside other brands like L’Oréal, Maybelline, MAC, etc. ☹️ It was such a top tier brand!

Lmao times have certainly changed since 1969, plus makeup is an art form, so really, there's no "wrong" way to do it (even if some things are more flattering than others). Plus the drunk blush is inspired by a Japanese trope, and this video is clearly western.

    • @bert1029
      @bert1029 6 років тому +72

Almost everybody does it for their daily makeup but when I was growing up girls didn't really do that

      Stella Johnson This was 1969, not 1869. Heck, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had started years before. Makeup wasn't shameful at all in the 60s- look at Twiggy

    • @08Stella
      @08Stella 7 років тому +8

      CARRIE - I'm not sure what you mean. I never said that it was in 1869.... Maybe you reacted to the wrong person or on the wrong thread. I have just expressed my surprise to come across a tutorial earlier than UA-cam existed. Since I've never seen any of it before. This whole industry was treated as a 'Top Secret' mission on the "hows". They used to call a "make-up artist to the stars" and (s)he knew all the tricks. Not the public. So, seeing this vintage piece from the time before we were even born was mesmerizing to me. xx
