the sexism is the focus on women's appearance. You don't see videos like these for men. Women have always been painted as something to be stared at. This was a time period where you couldn't even open a bank account without a man co-signing for you. Don't be so quick to dismiss all the rights you have because of the women who fought who came before you.
Blush and rouge are two different types of cheek coloring. "Rouge" is cheek color in a dense cream/creme, whereas "blush" is cheek color in compacted powder form. I have found that rouge does not work well on dry skin, as its moisture is quickly absorbed (with the color vanishing), even though moisturizer was earlier applied that same day. As a result, some people prefer to use blush, whereas others prefer rouge. Blush had not yet been developed in the 1940s, so that generation used rouge. I believe Blush entered the marketplace in the 1960s. In the 1940s, the only meaning of the word "blush" was to turn red when feeling self-conscious or embarrassed.
I'm from Canada, and we always used "rouge" for cream or powder. I've lived in the US for a long time and I still say it even though most people here use "blush."
I'm a 40yr old man who mainly watches metal fab videos, so why did the algorithm recommend THIS? Better question, why did I watch it all? I even went ahead and gave it the Like lol
The fact is more and more people are becoming nostalgic for a less complicated time when women were women and men were men. "Trad-wife" is trending for a reason.
Most of them didn't do it daily! Many of these 1940s styles can last several days with very little touch up in between. And many women back then would go to a salon to have their hair styled once or twice a week, then sleep in a bonnet to keep the style from being wrecked at night. When I do a wet set on my head it typically lasts 3-4 days.
The environment we live in is polluted and the food we eat is poisoned so it interferes on hair quality I know a lot of indigenous people here in Brazil who the hair is better than mine and they not even use shampoo
Back then, women would all have perms, and then we get a wash and set every week usually Saturday mornings. The hairdressers back then would thoroughly scrub the hair getting it squeaky clean. Then they would apply a setting lotion and proceed to roll the hair in very structured elaborate patterns, depending on what hairstyle that particular Woman wanted. They would sit under hood dryer for a good time until the hair was dry and then they would have to sit and “cool down” for 10 minutes before sitting back in the hairdressers chair. And this is where the term “hairdresser” was invented. Because they would comb out back comb, shape, tweak and spray the hair. This part was crucial, and the difference between hair that needed to be redone the next day, and a hair dressing lasting a week. For maintenance, the woman usually had a pick a little bit of hairspray for touchups. At night she would be expected to wrap her hair in a scarf to protect the style, and when she would have a shower or a bath, she would put her hair in a shower cap to ensure that the style was not ruined by the moisture. This is how between the efforts of a hairdresser and the woman, they could make a hairstyle last a whole week.
I love how some of the first words were “never use makeup as a mask” I wish that was still implemented today. I love seeing other women’s natural beauty shine ✨
So right! It seems as if many young women nowadays all strive to look the same - I don't know whose style they're mimicking, might be one of the Kardashians...
Look up a "roller set" and realize they didn't shampoo often, usually once a week - and it was a process of an hour or two each time. Most of these styles relied on a lot of bobby pins and u-shaped hair pins, along with hair nets. They also often slept in rollers, pin curls, bonnets and scarves, and used talcum powder at the roots to refresh like we use dry shampoo today.
@@leapintothewild to my knowledge, shampoo isn't that good for our hair in the first place. Careful brushing with a very thick comb is a much better solution that keeps the hair just as clean. And it naturally reduces the amount of oil produced by our hair, because that comes from drying it out too much with using shampoo on the daily.

Wow that was so cute!! I really like the advice, it is timeless. I had no idea they had bids like this back then, it’s like UA-cam MUA before UA-cam! Haha
Kind of motivating. Better than simple makeup, jeans and sweatshirts. Used ponds as a teen and it helped to clear my face. Will take a look at the ingredients next time I’m at the store. Maybe worth a try again.
Ladies of Instagram with their Morrissey sized eyebrows would do well to heed the sensible comments about eyebrows here! Tbh most of it is just common sense, and about enhancing your natural beauty rather than overdoing it which looks gaudy and tacky, obviously the hairstyles are dated but the rest of it seems pretty good sense and a simple easy to follow routine. Being clean and nicely put together isn't sexist, it is about self worth and care.
I love how people now will say this is sexist, but it was actually other women who made the “rules”. For example red nail polish was considered too bold. The ladies couldn’t have another woman with red nails out shining them! That’s the tea no one wants to talk about, how women created and maintain beauty standards to compete with other women. We can’t blame men for this one gals! 💅🤷♀️
I’m a hairstylist and I still have my elderly women come in and ask me to rinse their hair in an astringent after there wash! They come in weekly. It really does help the scalp.
Witch hazel has been used on the scalp and skin for decades, and it's a great toner for oily and acne-prone skin. And it's cheap! I still keep it around to dab on the rare pimple.

I cant help but wonder if the concealer was better then or whether it’s the poor quality film that’s making it seem that way cuz I wish my makeup covered that well lol
Concealer was sadly rather thick. The bullet tube Maybelline sold was light in consistency compared to concealer. A lot of applications of 40s Concealer is what covered, not the Concealer itself. More is better (not!) Seemed to be the make up motto. Powder was the only full coverage product available, but it wasn't a great look if one piled it on under the eyes. We're much more fortunate now when it comes to choices...
Modern day videos made like this and shown to children in school could be life altering. Society needs directions because most have been lost now for sometime. They are raised by bad parents who were raised by bad parents.
school is for emotional growth, learning critical thinking skills, and a way to find your talents and achieve accomplishments. Not for being told how to wear your hair or do your makeup.
Maybe not children, but for tweens and teens it's a good idea. Teens love direction that they can implement without their parents directing them to do it. I remember when I was growing up I rarely took my mom's advice until I was an adult and realized how right she was.
It's quite helpful, really. There are so, so many products and I don't know how theyre all supposed to layer. It's also nice that there is an acknowledgement of different face shapes. It's obviously of its time, but it's mostly fine and helpful (I wouldn't suggest a scalp astringent, high heels on the beach is a recipe for a twisted ankle, and it's not for me to say whether soneone should get rid of body hair)
Probably not as long as we would think. I've done vintage curls. Takes maybe 15-20 minutes to put my hair in rollers, sleep on it. 5 minutes to brush it out the next day. Maybe add 5-10 minutes if you're putting it up. They also didn't wash and style daily. Women back then were busy, I doubt anyone but the idle rich had time for elaborate and time consuming hair styling.
д. It was a medley of several songs but I found myself singing along mainly to “keep young and beautiful” and “ oh you beautiful doll”.. I’m pretty ancient so those songs are very familiar from my youth.
i can’t believe we’ve gone backwards in makeup. maybe not the ingredients and technology and products - but the techniques itself. women just put on a layer of foundation, then concealer, then smear a brown poo line of ‘contour’ (they use bronzer as a contour for some reason) from their hairline to their mouth on their cheeks until they blend it out and it looks like they’ve smeared dirt on each side of their face.
I think your over simplifying it. Back then makeup wasn’t marketed as fun really there wasn’t room to be creative or innovative with makeup. These days there’s tips and tricks and sometimes people over do it but there’s an entire industry just like there was back then that are creating a new narrative or trend of makeup. In any case we’ve gone forward….especially if we’re talking inclusivity.
@@krisjackson6567 i’m not oversimplifying it. Look at the techniques and graphs he showed. It’s tailored on different face shapes and types. Most women nowadays just do the same ‘techniques’ they’ve seen on tiktok and instagram, regardless of if it fits their face. There’s no regard to their face shapes and how it’ll look. Plus - i’m not wrong about the contour thing. People use a warn toned foundation product, especially a bronzer - but they use it as a contour. They smear it all over their cheeks because they think it defines their face. It doesn’t. it looks horrendous. There’s no thought to the application and what they’re trying to achieve. It looks like a dark smear across the sides of their face. It doesn’t create depth or shadows or anything.
Lmao the only reason why I can agree with you a little is bc when I first started makeup, my contour looked like a five o'clock shadow. .OK. DON'T SCREAM MA'AM
It’s World War 2.
Chill?

Wow that was so cute!! I really like the advice, it is timeless. I had no idea they had bids like this back then, it’s like UA-cam MUA before UA-cam! Haha
Never use make up as a mask. As true today as then. I wish more young people were told that today.
They are told, but people can have options. Let people do whatever they want with their style.
@KGDanny02 Of course there's pushback on a positive message. This generation is so combative.
@zepplin exactly.
Kind of motivating. Better than simple makeup, jeans and sweatshirts. Used ponds as a teen and it helped to clear my face. Will take a look at the ingredients next time I’m at the store. Maybe worth a try again.
“Never use makeup as a mask” YES!
These things are literally teaching me how to take care of myself... 😂❤
Beautiful! 💖💖💖💖
💅🤷♀️
Whoa, I’ve never seen the astringent tip for oily hair 🤯
I recently bought a rosewater toner that also has cider vinegar in it and it says you can use it for oily hair. I never knew you could do that.
@@c.s.7266 gives a lovely shine too! 😊
Oily hair is healthy. Dry hair is not. Your hair and skin needs some oil. Vinegar is very drying to hair.
I need moreeee!!
I wish I had known about the eyebrows tip!
Man, those '40s haircuts, just like Lauren Bacall. No wonder we had a baby-boom!
Excellent ❤
Amazing 😍
this is so soothing for me idk why
I love these videos! 😊
Actuallly those times wore more peacefull in a way than today, we are much more obsessed in appearence physically and on social media.
Um... this was during World War II. I wouldn't call that peaceful.
@@leapintothewild People werent snow flakes thats a start
@@alinec_94 Good grief, what does that have to do with anything in this video? You didn't even have the sense to know WWII was in the 1940s, and why there were so many women joining the armed services... 🙄
@@leapintothewild a war would be better to Society today, make people grow up
@@alinec_94 spoken like a true gen z. Are you?? Lol we already have one in Ukraine and it's growing our inflation bills recession etc. Not to mention energy crisis driving the economy towards a pit. Wishing for war to make people grow through suffering is dumb. My grandmother who was serving during ww2 would probably hit you for saying THIS.
We have had wars throughout the decades not world war but war in different countries. What growth has it brought except loss of human lives, general pessimism and loss of finance.
Iraq war, Afghanistan, Vietnam etc etc and soon. How grown are people in those regions you say. Huh
YOU NEED TO Grow up and read some history (you didn't even know the ww2 time period)than accusing people of becoming snowflakes.
Pseudo intellectual shite is what you're on about without thinking or reading about the world or what wars have done to human race. The people have fought wars before you and your ancestors have given their lives to stop it and keep their next of kin alive. Wishing for war after their efforts to bring together a more stabler world we have today , is insulting them.
This video will teach me more than what my mother taught me 😂
"Muscles gain snap the more they are used." I will definity remember that one
It's very good for the skin.
Bravo! New subscriber 👏👏👏👏👏
2:22 that is such a great tip from now on ill put some witch hazel on my scalp after working out
I used to wear foundation but it's a chore finding the right color matches for the winter vs summer skin.
More people need to be watching this
Well this helps me!!
Great to see all the positive comments. I was curious to see if people were in an uproar because of "mansplaining".
If people from the 40's could see what we can do with makeup now, I wonder how they'd respond
People from the 40’s are still alive 😂
@@Undergroundgossip Not most
Esp how the brows are done now 🤣
My grandma was fairly disappointed, and that was 20 years ago. She was born in 1917, died 2006.
Well, they'd say make up nowadays is 'clownish', which is true.
thank you :’) ❤
I cant help but wonder if the concealer was better then or whether it’s the poor quality film that’s making it seem that way cuz I wish my makeup covered that well lol
WAC makeup tips, love it❣️ Wish my female Soldiers followed this advice! 😅
@@JRNarian exactly 💯
No thanks. School is for intellectual growth
Ironic, considering the 'bad parents' also come from a generation like shown in the video.
Those military ladies were on point. They had beauty, elegance, and a hardcore face to match. ❤
WAIT. Isn’t that Ern westmore in the background?! From the 1950s makeup tutorial?! Pause at 0:19 if you don’t believe me
So satisfactory video
Lovely. Thanks for sharing.
I think that's why a lot of people in US are getting sick. Lack of showering daily with hot water and soap.
Make the most of your face! 🤣 I’m gonna remember that one every day.
I want to practice the hair now
Wait..how is it possible that they're in the military yet still has time to do such intricate hairstyles daily?
Applying makeup never been so therapeutic
The nails were all beautiful!! Wonder if they were natural or if they had fake nails back then
Our women in uniform!! My grandmother was a WAC!! Edited to say: she was always done up immaculately.
Beautiful
Nice to know we’re still baking our faces with powder 😂some things never change 🎉
How long must those hair-dos take to do?
Yeah, how did they get their hair that way?
Probably not as long as we would think. I've done vintage curls. Takes maybe 15-20 minutes to put my hair in rollers, sleep on it. 5 minutes to brush it out the next day. Maybe add 5-10 minutes if you're putting it up. They also didn't wash and style daily. Women back then were busy, I doubt anyone but the idle rich had time for elaborate and time consuming hair styling.
Looks like Perc Westmore applying the makeup
“To suit your facial confirmation and GI regulations”
Me: (an anatomy student) *gastro-intestinal?*
I think GI meant the women in the armed forces. The military has rules on how everyone can dress.
I need someone to do my makeup because I will fall tutorials for my face shape and still look bad
I’m sure you’re lovely! It’s a learning curve and the more you do it the easier it’ll get.
Try tutorials on "every day makeup", "no makeup make up look", "nude makeup" and "makeup for beginners". These should be the most simple types, you will get better the more you practise at home, don't give up! :)

Anyone tell me the name of the background music 😭😭
I was so confused (^_^;) turns out wrong color and wrong placement. In the vid they said Hollywood makeup artist. So this is a professional. That doesn't mean every girl in that vid is doing his make up tips either lol
@@bunster8129 perhaps not every woman back then was as thoughtful as he suggests they should be, but people who do makeup now should! it’s like 80 years later, we should’ve progressed and evolved.
I used to work in the beauty industry in the 90s and 00s and I totally agree with you, this contouring and Morrissey sized eyebrows and pillow sized lips to my mind looks awful, fake and tacky, yeah have fun with make up but they all seem to do the same thing, unless it's make up for festivals or whatever. Ah I'm middle aged lol and like subtle, pretty make up and natural eyebrows!
Yes, clearly good advice on how to look in the Army. 2:49 😲
I wonder how many makeup ingredients from the 40s have been banned by now?
I miss people caring about being presentable
"Never powder a large-nose first - it will become a highlight" - this was way before contouring😂 👃
