  • Learn the vintage art 1940s makeup, skincare, nail polish, hairstyling and body health. Our popular 1940s beauty tutorial film, now ai colorized and enhanced in 4K 60fps.
Learn the art of applying foundation, rouge, powder, lipstick, eye makeup and nail polish. There's a feature on 1940's hairstyles for women in the forces; the pageboy hairstyle, hair rolls, up-swept hair, bun hairstyles, straight and curly shingle hairstyles etc. The film also includes some great vintage beauty hacks for feminine attractiveness, including hair care, healthy teeth and how to maintain an hourglass figure.
    00:21 FOUNDATION
Never use makeup as a mask. Use it to bring out, rather than hide the natural freshness of your skin. And use it conservatively.
Makeup goes on smoother, looks more natural with a foundation cream or liquid.
It provides a lasting makeup, and protects your skin against wind and sun.
    00:35 APPLYING ROUGE
The wrong use of rouge can make a woman look tired or clownish.
Cream rouge is applied directly over the foundation.
Dry rouge is used only after powdering.
To be effective, rouge and powder should not be detectable.
Never use too much rouge. You can always add more.
Cream rouge should be applied with the fingers, and blended until no line of demarcation is noticeable.
Never use an elongated field of rouge on the oblong face.
    Always use a circle.
Never use a circle on a round or square face.
Use an elongated field to create the illusion of length.
When in doubt for placement of rouge, smile and place it on the highest point of the cheek!
01:30 HOW TO APPLY FACE POWDER
One should always choose a powder, that gives warmth and brightness to the skin.
In powdering, start at the receding point, such as under the eyes, cheeks or receding chin.
Never powder a large nose first.
It will become a highlight !
    01:53 HOW TO APPLY LIPSTICK
Don't try and improve on nature.
Follow the natural line of the lips.
And don't use exotic lip shades.
They're not chic, and they're certainly not GI !
Bite gently on a piece of tissue to set the lips and remove excess lipstick.
Lipstick smears on handkerchiefs and lipstick rims on cups are not appealing.
    02:35 HOW TO APPLY EYEBROWS
Don't tamper with the natural line of your eyebrows.
Your eyebrows as nature gave them, give expression and character to your face.
    They're also functional !
They protect your eyes from strong light and dust.
    02:48 NAIL POLISH TIPS
These are actually the only articles necessary for good nail grooming.
Especially when you're in the army.
Talons are out, when you wear a uniform and so is exotic nail polish.
If you use polish, leave it as conservative.
03:05 THE GI GIRL MAKEUP LOOK
She's learned a lot. See how smoothly and skillfully her makeup is blended.
She can be proud of that job.
    03:20 1940'S BEAUTY TIPS
04:11 HOW TO CLEAN YOUR TEETH PROPERLY
05:03 1940'S HAIRCARE AND HAIRSTYLES ADVICE
If you'll pardon the suggestion, a good brushing might be in order.
    Gently, gently. I didn't say scalping !
If you're looking for a change in hairstyling to suit your face type and GI regulations.
There's the Pageboy, the Hair Roll, the Bun, the Upsweep, the straight Shingle, and the Curly Shingle. If you wear your hair short, it should be cut and shaped often.
Snip away the hangovers from the last permanent.
    06:54 YOUR FIGURE
    Foundation garments have their place.
But the best foundation garment in the world is right inside your own body - your muscles.
Any foundation garment wears out with use, but your muscles do just the opposite.
The gain elasticity, the more they're used.
Consistent daily planned exercise can be all things to all people.

I love how they called blush “rouge”. My grandmother still uses that word.

    • @cacatr4495

Blush and rouge are two different types of cheek coloring. "Rouge" is cheek color in a dense cream/creme, whereas "blush" is cheek color in compacted powder form. I have found that rouge does not work well on dry skin, as its moisture is quickly absorbed (with the color vanishing), even though moisturizer was earlier applied that same day. As a result, some people prefer to use blush, whereas others prefer rouge. Blush had not yet been developed in the 1940s, so that generation used rouge. I believe Blush entered the marketplace in the 1960s. In the 1940s, the only meaning of the word "blush" was to turn red when feeling self-conscious or embarrassed.

Most of them didn't do it daily! Many of these 1940s styles can last several days with very little touch up in between. And many women back then would go to a salon to have their hair styled once or twice a week, then sleep in a bonnet to keep the style from being wrecked at night. Back then, women would all have perms, and then we get a wash and set every week usually Saturday mornings. The hairdressers back then would thoroughly scrub the hair getting it squeaky clean. Then they would apply a setting lotion and proceed to roll the hair in very structured elaborate patterns, depending on what hairstyle that particular Woman wanted. They would sit under hood dryer for a good time until the hair was dry and then they would have to sit and “cool down” for 10 minutes before sitting back in the hairdressers chair. And this is where the term “hairdresser” was invented. Because they would comb out back comb, shape, tweak and spray the hair. This part was crucial, and the difference between hair that needed to be redone the next day, and a hair dressing lasting a week.
For maintenance, the woman usually had a pick a little bit of hairspray for touchups. At night she would be expected to wrap her hair in a scarf to protect the style, and when she would have a shower or a bath, she would put her hair in a shower cap to ensure that the style was not ruined by the moisture. This is how between the efforts of a hairdresser and the woman, they could make a hairstyle last a whole week.

I honestly think a lot of these make up tutorials were to help women who wanted to follow the current trend but it was unflattering for them whether it be facial shape, color, etc...

Concealer was sadly rather thick. The bullet tube Maybelline sold was light in consistency compared to concealer. A lot of applications of 40s Concealer is what covered, not the Concealer itself.
More is better (not!) Seemed to be the make up motto.
Powder was the only full coverage product available, but it wasn't a great look if one piled it on under the eyes.

Maybe add 5-10 minutes if you're putting it up. They also didn't wash and style daily. Women back then were busy, I doubt anyone but the idle rich had time for elaborate and time consuming hair styling.

i can’t believe we’ve gone backwards in makeup. maybe not the ingredients and technology and products - but the techniques itself. women just put on a layer of foundation, then concealer, then smear a brown poo line of ‘contour’ (they use bronzer as a contour for some reason) from their hairline to their mouth on their cheeks until they blend it out and it looks like they’ve smeared dirt on each side of their face.

    • @krisjackson6567
      @krisjackson6567 Рік тому +7

I think your over simplifying it. Back then makeup wasn’t marketed as fun really there wasn’t room to be creative or innovative with makeup. These days there’s tips and tricks and sometimes people over do it but there’s an entire industry just like there was back then that are creating a new narrative or trend of makeup. In any case we’ve gone forward….especially if we’re talking inclusivity.

    • @oliverwortley3822
      @oliverwortley3822 Рік тому +10

@@krisjackson6567 i’m not oversimplifying it. Look at the techniques and graphs he showed. It’s tailored on different face shapes and types. Most women nowadays just do the same ‘techniques’ they’ve seen on tiktok and instagram, regardless of if it fits their face. There’s no regard to their face shapes and how it’ll look. Plus - i’m not wrong about the contour thing. People use a warn toned foundation product, especially a bronzer - but they use it as a contour. They smear it all over their cheeks because they think it defines their face. It doesn’t. it looks horrendous. There’s no thought to the application and what they’re trying to achieve. It looks like a dark smear across the sides of their face. It doesn’t create depth or shadows or anything.
