@@mikec4308 no he's still a god... A god of smash 64. Isai's passion has always been 64 and he only even played melee in the first place because of Ken's suggestion and friendship.
RubberCement Yeah, have you ever noticed in between games he does that kind of rocking thing? I jokingly call it the 'M2K shuffle,' bcus its like his good luck dance. But if it's related to depression I won't give it such a 'title'
Mashu Koria As someone that suffers from both anxiety and depression, his rocking reminds me more of my behavior when I'm having/about to have an anxiety attack. But obviously, I don't know exactly what he suffers from, so it's hard to say. Mental illness sucks balls, either way.
Parts of it were really bad like the anime background shots for Isai and other parts were really cheesy but for an amateur documentary, yeah it's really well made.
This documentary tells the story of Melee through to EVO 2013, perhaps the most influential and important tournament in Melee's history. Now, EVO 2019 will not happen for this game, despite its six straight years on the main stage. What I would give for a documentary of 2013-2019 Melee; the rise and fall of the Five Gods, the Godslayers, the demigods, and all of the hungry newcomers who strive for a Top 100 spot.
Edgar Bautista Yeah, that guy really got to me. Such powerful profound words he has, even though they are really just so normal.. they hit so hard. Simple and deep.. I want to just chill with that dude... talk about the universe and world peace or something
+Vince SC Exactly. I'm still pretty new to this community("joined" like a year or a year and a half ago), and this video made me realize how much more this means to people and this taught me the whole story behind it. This actually got to me a bit...
+Vince SC I don;t know how i even got here on this video on youtube. But Actually i am crying because i hear Isai say's things that i recognize really badly in my own life right now. I grew up with pdd-nos (form of autism) WIthout not knowing it. I Alway's experiencing things differently then others, which makes it almost imposible to connect with others and yourself. I think Isai had that to, without getting diagnosed. What the docu tolled about him being a good team player en being better when he played in a team is exactly what happend to me also. In a Group-Timetrial in cycling. Its a long docu but i thing i am going to watch the rest of this because its indeed very special.
Isai almost made me cry with his view on personal relationships, i can relate with a lot of the things he said. Watched till the end, can't give enough praise.
you know, its interesting that Ken compared Isai trashing him to him turning super saiyan, because the old school smash elite is almost built up like a cliche-heavy shounen anime: we got Ken, who didn't even start out as a member of the original "crew" of competitive smashers, but quickly grew in power until he became the most powerful, making him the shounen protagonist, then we got Azen who is almost insurmountable in prowess, but always just barely comes up short to his rival Ken, making him the frenemy, "vegeta" kind of guy, and lastly Isai is very much the Gohan of the group: insane potential, probably more than anyone else ever had or ever will have, but rarely ever does anything with it.
+Syntax! I'm not saying it needs to be changed, just that maybe it's predecessor can expand on what's already built to make a more deep and immersive experience, because we can only find new techs for so long.
Yami I started playing competitively about 3 years ago. I felt like I was way late to the party but now I'm really proud of when I got into the scene. and take it from me, Smash isn't dying anytime soon.
This is such a beautiful piece of history captured here. It's got everything I love.... Video Games, the early 2000's, competition, and fun trash talking!
I wish I was a part of this, touring across the US, meeting new people, goofing off, having fun, joining the hype, being tired as fuck on long car rides and plane rides from one side of the country to the other... All to play one of the greatest fighting games on Earth with friendly rivals and new buddies. Watching the game grow up and evolve alongside the hundreds of thousands if not millions of players in the US and worldwide. It’s like a dream.
I'm not a Melee player but I've watched so much content and tournaments the past two years or so. This documentary was beyond amazing, even though it's "old". I love the community even though I'm not part of it. And I'll keep watching tournaments and more vidoes even though I don't play the game. Thanks.
Azen: A super introspective dude. He understands his talents and limitations and he has come to terms with them. He's great at anything that resonates with him. Isai: A genius. I believe he truly blames (or at the time of this documentary, blamed) himself greatly over some experience years ago. That's why he'd rather please others over himself, he feels like he owes other people something. Ken: A true competitive animal. A winner. He relishes in victory and he despises defeat. Extremely driven and determined. Korean DJ: Fearless. The circumstance of his father's accident molded him into a person that doesn't believe in mental limitations, after all, he saw his dad pull through an extremely hard time of his life. That really gave him a "bigger picture" in life where you realize fear is just a mental barrier. PC Chris: Extremely open, laidback dude. To him it's all about meeting new people, enjoying new experiences, and if he can win while doing that, why not. He's got drive, but he never lets it take over his life. Mew2King: A constant seeker of improvement. Both in the strive for perfection in his game to bettering his understanding of people, he is an example of how personal growth and improving yourself can make you happy. Mango: As he said, just a reckless guy. He lives life to the fullest. He will not have a mid-life crisis, because he has lived the way he wants through his best years, he's never denied himself anything based on what other people think is "correct". All very different, deep personalities. It's outstanding how this game has brought them and many more together. Amazing documentary, amazing game.

Okay, so people make a joke that this is an anime, but episodes 1-6 fit so well together it is actually like an anime arc. The first episode sets up the rivalry with Azen and Ken Episode 2 begins to add new characters (like Isai and Captain Jack) while expanding on other characters (Chillin, Azen, and Ken). Episode 3 shows how well of teammates Ken and Isai are, while showing Isai’s own mini arc. He’s in love with a girl who doesn’t feel the same way about him. He never tries except when he teams, then one day at a tournament that he’d probably not try at and give it all to Ken, he hears the girl he loves cheering him on, causing him to try and ends up defeating his partner, for the first and only time. Episode 4 sets up Ken’s character arc (him going through a lot for being the best player) while setting up people who want to see him fall off his throne (Like Wife for example) along with a mysterious challenger (Bombsoldier) fighting against Ken and almost defeating him, and he inspires many others along the way. Not only does Ken retain his #1 status, but he also gains an ally (Chudat) and his only real rival (Azen) retires Episode 5 sets up Ken’s first real challenger other than Azen, this being PC Chris, with him losing a tournament for the first time in a while. While this gives H2YL hope, it’s quickly thwarted by PC getting annihilated at MLG Dallas. This sets up PC Chris’ character; he wants to have fun, and hopefully win along the way. Ken and PC have one last match, at MLG Anaheim, with Ken defeating PC again, securing his title as the best. Episode 6 introduces KoreanDJ, the player with no fear. After being inspired by his dad, who managed to fight off death from a near-fatal car accident, became one of the best players in a short amount of time. He works up the ladder and even manages to defeat Ken. Azen comes out of retirement and he defeats Chudat and KoreanDJ to win his first MLG in a while. We’re also introduced to Mew2king, who will be more prominent next season. Azen finally manages to defeat Ken and also gains another MLG title. We also see Ken burning out and Chudat going through a conflict about if he can actually let himself win. Finally, we have the final tournament. Here’s the recap of each character: Ken - The King of Smash who wants one last tournament to win before he retires Azen - Ken’s rival who wants to secure his title as Ken’s equal Isai - The fighter who doesn’t unleash his potential unless his friends are on the line (or unless he’s trying to impress the girl he loves) PC Chris - A rising star who wants to prove himself a good player after coming short of his previous wins and not meeting expectations KoreanDJ - A Fearless warrior who will do whatever it takes to beat an opponent, and whose dream it is to become the best. Mew2king - A new challenger who is fairly unpopular and not much is known about him other than he’s not very well liked at this point Chudat - Wanting to finally prove that he’s not second fiddle to Ken and Azen Hugs - An old ally of Ken’s who managed to make it to the finals In the end, many of the arcs come to an end - Chudat is taken out early, Isai, Hugs, and Mew2king are defeated, Azen is bested by his rival once again, Ken is taken out by KoreanDJ, and the final showdown happes: The Fearless Warrior verses The First Challenger. In the end, PC wins, securing his place as a top player and not falling short of his old wins. While Ken and PC are content with their placings, KDJ is suffering because of his loss. Before they have time to prepare themselves for the next year, MLG drops Melee, and season 1 comes to a close. Sorry for the long comment! Just thought this was too much like an anime for it to not be written down. The reason I stopped after episode 6 is because 7-9 don’t really fit together like the others do. Feel free to reply with the other episodes if you’d like!
@@thomasc.5219 I doubt the majority of people who watch Melee even play the game. I know I don't (and bigger tournaments picking up 100k+ views shows it). You're just hating on people because they're different from you/have different interests.
Man.. Anyone who's getting into Smash now or has been in love with it for a long time, either way, just owes it to themselves to watch this video. It feels really good to know more about the roots of the community and learn about the original "Gods" like Isai, Ken, KDJ, Azen, and PC. I didn't even know Chu, Chillin, Hugs, M2K and some other modern day players were in the scene for THAT long either. And to think this video is 4 years old too lol.

@@thomasc.5219 did you even watch the entire thing? Near the end they acknowledge their maniacal devotion to the game and that they don't find it all that bad. They also mention multiple times how disgusting SOME people are(not the whole community but sadly big enough to be an issue). I can also call football a fucking childs game because basically its just kids running around hitting each other and throwing a ball, but that's a very boiled down version of what it really is and that's what you did to melee.Things can be repurposed like melee and especially when you have all this money and job opportunities around it, it no longer is child's play just like a physical sport like football. So next time shut the fuck up and watch through the entire documentary and understand their viewpoint as well before judging anything because I guarantee that you are wrong here.
@@heidan1226 atleast I'm more entertaining than any Smash fan. Smell alot better too. But really that's not hard to bet better than any of those neckbeard virgins. I think if I ever was like any of those people in the Smash community, I would have killed myself cause I couldnt handle my life being that sad.
The pictures of players fading into the smash logo with happy-somber music, or MOH talking about how Armada was starving for victory and comparing his lust for victory to a Holocaust survivor in a buffet? Both were pretty good.
I love Wife in this documentary for sure. I think he's done so much behind the scenes work and was there since the start that you have to give respect for the commitment since the beginning not just the masters of the game.
People usually treat M2K well, but in certain circumstances they treat him badly, like when he fought Sethlon in his home town, and the "Roy's our Boy" chant was in his ear the whole time.
With how respectful they are, it'd be a great place for him to cut back and just have fun playing. Though, I can't say anything about the skill of Japanese competitive players, so I'm not sure his skill level would make a good fit. (Maybe SSB4 since he's not god tier competitive in that one)
daspammerguy TBH, the top Japanese are probably way better than M2K when it comes to Sm4sh, but if he could find Melee/Project M Tourneys in Japan I'm sure he'd perform a lot better over there.
M2K is always cracking under pressure when the crowd is yelling in his ear/cheering against him. After Seeing Ken, who went through the same shit, loving how calm they were...I'd imagine M2K would fucking love Japan's Melee/PM community
Anyone else feel Nostalgia for something they never actually experienced? Watching this always makes me wish I grew up a part of this scene, going to these tourneys.
If you like Melee: play Melee. If you like Smash 4: Play Smash 4. Smash is Smash. I don't care how different the games may be. We should be encouraging each other instead of insulting. Even ignoring is better than that. Who cares if they like the opposite game. They have every right in the world to.
Joshua Davidson I agree, but I think the point that many people miss is that you should TRY the smash games and see which one you like the best. Dare I say that if someones first time playing Super Smash Brothers is playing brawl they will probably think it's amazing UNTIL they try the other games :P.
The fact that M2K guy is willing to be vulnerable and open and honest about his feelings doesn’t make him a pussy at all, actually makes him a chad tbh
Devin Malloy Uhh I believe he said to look for it in march but I could be wrong, check his channel "Eastpointpictures" there's an update video were he talks about the release date.
I'm a speedrunner, and I've played some other games half-competitively in my time, too. I've always known about Smash but I was never a fan of it. I just could never see how it was so interesting. But damn, after watching this, gotta say I was wrong. So much more respect for you guys now :) Amazing documentary.
Can confirm, OP is right. Also, typing “one of the greatest Melee players of all time” with quotes brings up the original first episode of this series.
I’m back to watch this for the 1000th time. EVO really missed out but it was gonna happen eventually. Keep the fire and spirit alive and stay hungry and we will never die. LONG LIVE MELEE! (and smash)
Just finished watching this. Beautifully put together. I know I could never be on the mang0, Ken, M2K level, but this really made me want to fire up the old GameCube and practice short hops and wave dashing. Also, if you find Azen's channel on here, he's got footage from the first Melee "tournament" in August of 2002. Real piece of Smash history.
Oh my gosh. I hardly have the words to type this right now. To me, this was so much more than a video. This was an emotional experience. More so than one I’ve ever had. This community, these players, this family, drew me in and welcomed me. I laughed. I yelled. I cried. Every little part of this masterpiece resonated within me and produced a reaction. This work of art! This masterpiece! I felt as though as was there. I felt like I was cheering on Ken. I felt like I was patiently sitting at Wife’s feet, listening like a kid listens to a story. I felt like I was there, hugging M2K after a loss, telling him not to let it get to him. I felt like I was laughing at how stupid, yet loving, Mango is. I felt like I was talking to Isai and being there for him as a friend. I traveled coast to coast, state to state, even across seas, with this beautiful band of people, learning and loving all along the way. I became attached to this family. I feel like I just fit right into this, this... community! Smash bros will always, always be near and dear to my heart. It is so much more than just a game. It is a life. To you, creator of this documentary, although you may never see this: God bless you! This amazing piece of work you have created has surpassed all other videos I’ve ever watched! You worked so, so hard on this and let me tell you, it is evident. You created in atmosphere I felt a part of. I love you!! If you’ve made it this far, you might be as ridiculous as I am. Thank you for reading, I hope you can relate. Brothers in Smash, Brothers in life!!!!!
Will Will facts bruh. Ive grown up with melee and i remember when my brother told me ken retired, then i saw mango playing jiggly. Im not emotional bout it tho, still good times
Really? That dude seemed like a total tool. I dont know anything about the smash group, I guess now I do, but man always having to compare yourself to someone else just seems so small minded.
He predicted it, Mew2King got 1st in Melee Singles for Apex 2016, and he placed 4th in Wii U singles. Although, since his personality has changed from robot to human, he no longer hits perfection so hard. He's not as good at Wii U as he would be if he never became a part of the melee community. Growing up is strange. Computer Mew2King gets first place, perfection drilled into his brain. Human Mew2King stops being the king, but is more loved and socially accepted due to his social skills increasing. I guess you can't have skills for everything.
If you liked it, and want to play or know more, Every country and state has a community, don't be afraid and join them, you can even play online, etc. Smash is a wholesome community, so different and friendly, so give it a shot!
Bobs Boi The smash community makes hate bandwagons towards characters who have a possibility to make it in the game, just because their said character can’t make it in. I don’t hear anybody in Dota complaining about the characters. Smash is a toxic waste of a community, and that’s a fact. Maybe not more toxic, but it’s definitely just as toxic.
Man, this resonated with me so hard. I played pretty seriously from 07-13 or so. I was only regionally ranked at one point, somewhere in the top 25 of the southeast. took a set off lambchops once, one off fullmetal. Made it out of pools most times, but never placed super high. This game and the time I spent playing it means so much to me. Me and my partner from a small nowhere town talking about strategies and watching the MLG videos. The experiences we shared travelling and meeting people. The time our small nothing crew travelled to huntsville Alabama, and the tourney hosts bought our friend a hello kitty birthday cake and we sang happy birthday. We had our own small crew rivalry with PCB, and we'd travel back and forth. When we were first starting out we'd upload videos of our terrible play. Posting on smash boards. I remember when brawl came out, and our region had the first real big melee tournament and EVERYONE came. I watched M2K at the biggest tourney since brawl at 3 AM wake everyone up and tech chase people with shiek, claiming he knew exactly where someone was going by frame differences as soon as they hit the ground and pausing to show us. I remember those long nights when it was just me and my friend, practicing. And as we practiced and sharpened our rivalry talking about life, love, just... everything in general. I don't talk to anyone in my little crew anymore. We've drifted apart, but I know that those experiences shaped me into the person I am today. The lessons I learned about drive, victory, defeat. The friends I made, the ones I lost, and the ones that stayed. I learned about self discipline, and just more about my personality and who I actually was. All from a game that was never meant to do this. I miss those times. Thanks for bringing them all back to me one more time.

I bet it’s already in the works by someone. There’s no telling when it’ll be finished though.

My favorite player was "Isai" pure heart.
you know, its interesting that Ken compared Isai trashing him to him turning super saiyan, because the old school smash elite is almost built up like a cliche-heavy shounen anime: we got Ken, who didn't even start out as a member of the original "crew" of competitive smashers, but quickly grew in power until he became the most powerful, making him the shounen protagonist, then we got Azen who is almost insurmountable in prowess, but always just barely comes up short to his rival Ken, making him the frenemy, "vegeta" kind of guy, and lastly Isai is very much the Gohan of the group: insane potential, probably more than anyone else ever had or ever will have, but rarely ever does anything with it.
That is a really good analogy
Gohan doesn't want to fight like isai
That analogy is great and all....... but who would be Hercule?

Thanks.

Ken: "BET!"

No Johns.
Wife is dope
They're all fucking nerds though.

Congratulations on finding the point.
Okay, so people make a joke that this is an anime, but episodes 1-6 fit so well together it is actually like an anime arc.
The first episode sets up the rivalry with Azen and Ken
Episode 2 begins to add new characters (like Isai and Captain Jack) while expanding on other characters (Chillin, Azen, and Ken).
Not only does Ken retain his #1 status, but he also gains an ally (Chudat) and his only real rival (Azen) retires
Episode 5 sets up Ken’s first real challenger other than Azen, this being PC Chris, with him losing a tournament for the first time in a while.
Here’s the recap of each character:
Ken - The King of Smash who wants one last tournament to win before he retires
Azen - Ken’s rival who wants to secure his title as Ken’s equal
Isai - The fighter who doesn’t unleash his potential unless his friends are on the line (or unless he’s trying to impress the girl he loves)
PC Chris - A rising star who wants to prove himself a good player after coming short of his previous wins and not meeting expectations
KoreanDJ - A Fearless warrior who will do whatever it takes to beat an opponent, and whose dream it is to become the best.
Mew2king - A new challenger who is fairly unpopular and not much is known about him other than he’s not very well liked at this point
Chudat - Wanting to finally prove that he’s not second fiddle to Ken and Azen
Hugs - An old ally of Ken’s who managed to make it to the finals
In the end, many of the arcs come to an end - Chudat is taken out early, Isai, Hugs, and Mew2king are defeated, Azen is bested by his rival once again, Ken is taken out by KoreanDJ, and the final showdown happes: The Fearless Warrior verses The First Challenger.

I love Wife in this documentary for sure. I think he's done so much behind the scenes work and was there since the start that you have to give respect for the commitment since the beginning not just the masters of the game.
The whole idea of going around, visiting places, and playing games with friends and strangers gives me a nostalgic feeling.
This Documentary gave me so much respect for M2K. He's just awesome
After Seeing Ken, who went through the same shit, loving how calm they were...I'd imagine M2K would fucking love Japan's Melee/PM community
implying japanese people can't be mean

So what you are saying is you are a smelly virgin. Got it.
