True. I remember watching this repeatedly with my friends. It sparked a full summer and after school sessions of 3rd Strike and attempting to parry everything.
The MOST important thing to remember about Daigo vs. JWong, is that Justin had done this EXACT THING in the previous round, to close out his victory. So Daigo, KNOWING that Justin would fish for an errant action --> SA II --> clear victory......would do things that LOOKED like he might "do something", but in every instance he would *also* be tapping forward. (For the kids at home? This is how you parried. A fair amount of before/after frame data to work with, but it was PRETTY hard to reflexively *parry* things, and harder to get the timing for a red-parry, so....you pretty much had to KNOW it was happening, or was hard-coded to know when the block --> parry timing was occuring, which was SO precise that you couldn't counter-correct on Chun-Li's SA II.) So Daigo KNEW he was in the same position, and was reflexive-parrying on every "tic" that Chun-Li was offering. Eventually, Justin gambled, Daigo hit the first parry, and CONTINUED TO HIT THE RIGHT TIMING TO PARRY THE REST OF THE 15 HITS.... .....AND ALSO HIT THE BIGGEST COMBO HE COULD, WHICH -- seriously, I'unno if anyone has done the math on it or, but I'm curious -- WAS EXACTLY THE NECESSARY AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO WIN THE MATCH. (And was preeeeetty hard to do, on the fly, with charge-buffering and reflexive reactions to stuffs that was bein' thrown at you, and g'aaaaaaaaaah!)
Never played fighting games other than casually with friends but this video made me appreciate it that much more and this comment explained the magnitude even more!
Man I'm 35 today. I used to play this game. My brother and I DIDNT EVEN ATTEMPT PARRIES! We'd just block. They were too precise. And this parries all of the combo, then an air parry and then hitting and combo finishing himself. THE F!?
@@MarkEdwardRom no, it's a 15 hit attack, seven hits while Chun li is on the ground, then another seven with her still on the ground, but in a different stance, and one in the air
ikr every time I see it I can barely believe it. If there was no video evidence I wouldn't believe it no matter how many people saw it. Daigo is not human.
It's even a challenge in the re-release of the game and even then it's very, very difficult to pull off. You could easily take a hundred tries to make it and I wouldn't blame you one bit. Now imagine the pressure of being declared The Beast and going up against the undisputed US player in the biggest tournament in the world and pulling that off. Still incredible.
Nothing beat EVO moment #37, that is the one that kinda spark the FGC, inspiring so many people up until even today. Forever tales to be told in FGC. It has to be the last one on the list. :D
I wish the narrator had gone into a bit more detail about Evo moment 37. I've read a bit about it and it's not just that Daigo did the unreal parry it's that 1) he baited Justin into it by feeding his super meter with fireballs he could absorb 2) Justin said later that nobody even knew that was possible and had never seen anything like it. It makes the moment even more ridiculous.
17 hits all parried... That was insane! You can even see Justin button mash in disbelief! Evo Moment #37 will always be one of the best highlight in FGC and even gaming history!
Chun-Li's SA2 is actually 17 parries for the other characters, but only 15 for Ryu and Ken, because of the pushback. It goes 8-8-1 for everyone else, and 7-7-1 for the shotos. Daigo knew that. THAT'S what's really crazy to me about 37.
That right there is what separates an expert from a master. An expert knows his characters, knows his matchups, and has the skill and reaction time to put it into action. A master has an intimate and thorough understanding of the game and its mechanics, right down to the minutiae.
Holy crap....this moment just got even more iconic. The fact that he knew about that, prepared for it, executed it, and to top it all off, found a way to counterattack right afterwards to end the game......simply incredible is all I can say
I wonder how many people saw Evo moment 37 and said "holy shit I want to do that" and started playing street fighter because of that moment just like me
Louis Maximus Oraiz And also with Alex in vt1, but both characters in sfv don’t need much skill to block the whole ca, which greatly reduces the fun of doing it
When woshige lost because of the celebration, I feel like my favorite part is when the other guy actually stands up after winning but just in case takes a small peek back just in case. Oh do I love the human brain
17:59 If you know HBox, like his personality, seeing him that distraught with pure happiness on his face and damn near crying about his insane win, it really pulls on your heart strings.
@AndrewWithEase11 11 Surely if you're as clever as you think you are, you'd give reasoning as to why "He sucks," just because someone is better than you and more successful doesn't mean you have to dislike them; you should support them. "Easy win."
@AndrewWithEase11 11 You took an L in the beginning replying to a comment that was made 2 years ago on fatherless fan behavior: ☝🏻🤓 "It pulls on my gag reflux"
I remember they put #37 in a PlayStation version practice mode of SF 3rd Strike. I figured I'd give it a shot. After all, how hard can it be in a controlled setting? After half an hour of trying I stopped because my fingers started to hurt and I literally never even made it to Chun Li's second rep of kicks. Shit is impossible. Made me appreciate it even more.
You actually need to parry slower than the strikes would usually hit (about 1/4 speed) with a slightly longer gap before the 2nd round of kicks, to be fair it is a lot easier with an arcade stick or if you 'tap' the analogue stick if you don't have an arcade stick . Parrying in this game is satisfying
I looked at the final moment and said, “Yea go on. Go ahead. I know what’s comin’ go on and tell em about the Daigo Parry”, but even in rewatching it, I can’t lose the feeling it gave me.
And this kind of thing you call that a sport?! Have you ever heard of fair play? You cant play a game for two when you are alone. Honestly i cant believe you guys call that a sport and you dont have a rule for that.
one more thing about evo moment #37, chun li super is the fastest in the game, you can't parry it on visual reaction, you must react to the sound or predict it.
not sure what you are talking about. the initial super Flash Animation is well over 1 sec Long. not to take away anything from daigo but the reaction to the super itself it NOT the most impressive Thing About this Situation dude...
@@MyshKatze "the INITIAL" super Animation is way longer though. The single kicks are obviously not reactable. Daigo has done that parry before. I dont think anyone would doubt that, Right? xD
I'm not even a fighting game fan and I know who Justin Wong and daigo umehara are. Any gaming fan of any gaming genre need to respect these two for what they did for the landscape
Gat-_-Man-_-69 They did not just play the games though. They were responsible for kicking SF and the FGC to 11 after what they have done that then revolutionised the entire FGC and SF. They were responsible for the Evo Moment 37, without that greatest moment ever, the FGC nor SF would be as this big as today and the FGC would be less as it is than being on the same toes as other competitive games like LoL, Starcraft, etc...
I don’t see why I should care. I don’t care about fighting games/or the community, or street fighter so please explain again why every gamer should care?
Brandon Neely I dont play fighting games very much but even I know that was an absolutely insane display of muscle memory, reaction time, and showmanship in an incredibly tense environment.
At the very least Brandon, it shows why we love games. This was back in a time where so many people didn't get 'why we loved games' 'why play them so much' 'games are for kids & they are easy.' Its the community, the amazing feeling of managing to do the impossible just when you needed too, when you're on 1 hp against that final boss. It takes skill even to complete a single player game on hard, and this is the peak of brilliant skill. Moments like this are why game developers found the inspiration to make more multiplayer games which are everywhere today. They did change games as we know it, inspired many and made others respect what we do. So you know, it'd be nice if gamers at least took notice.
This is such a great video. I'm mostly a smasher and I don't really know much about the SF scene and this video does an awesome job at catching me up on FGC history. Beautiful work!

@@dorkasaurus_rex it honestly shouldn't have been possible with that kind of pressure. I mean to perfectly parry a 16 hit combo is fucking insane with that kind of pressure
For me, the Alex Valle vs Bonchan match was really memorable is because the matchup is almost impossible for Hugo theoretically. But Uncle Valle prove us wrong!
It is normally, especially because Bonchan was playing near perfect anti-grab game. But Uncle Valle didn't go for a grab (except catching the jump back in the last round if you count Ultra2 and the one meatsquasher) the entire match - he just abused Bonchan with Hugo's better range. If Valle had played like a normal Hugo player and schemed for grabs, he would have gotten dumpstered hard. But Sagat playing anti-grab is literally Sagat sitting at the worst possible range to deal with Hugo's normals and claps. Hugo's normals are kind of garbage, but when spaced properly they outrange a ton of characters and the goofy frame data doesn't really matter as much. Bonchan literally sat at the perfect range and got slapped around by normals and claps thinking that grabs were the bigger threat.
So in short, Uncle Valle just outplayed Bonchan in the most textbook definition of the term. He knew what he had to work with, he knew what he was up against, he read his opponent, he used surprise to his advantage, and he won. He (more or less) did everything right. He had his title and his legacy for a reason, and he made sure not to let people forget it.
HungryBox winning evo will always be the hypest shit out of melee for me. Dude spent years at tourneys and he finally won an evo. That shit was awesome.
This has aged like fine wine. The FGC has such a cool background especially looking back at it in the tail end of 2023. So much has changed yet the passion and hunger in the FGC burns bright. Great video from start to finish much love all!
This is one of the biggest reasons I love the FGC and love being a part of it. I don't play competitively, mainly because there's no competitive scene near me and I highly doubt my level of skill would take me very far lol... but still, to play fighting games, to compete in any capacity in a playerbase - a community - with such legendary history, that has produced such wonderful talent and beautiful moments... to know that I'm participating in that community... it's incredible.
Same dude. I'll still watch EVO and big majors any weekends I get a chance too, but those 6 or 7 years that had MAHVEL and SF4 at the top of the tournament tickets were super memorable for me :)
I'm super late to the party but the Valle part made me happy, seeing him erupt inside what everyone thought was a flickering ember was something special you don't see anymore.
Thanks for this amazing video. It's a stern reminder that, from arcade days to online, fighting games get our blood pumping and bring us together as a community.
This is probably still the best video The Score eSports ever made. Evo will return. This video is here to remind us of better days that will soon come back.
A few more weeks! i've watched every EVO since vanilla SF4 came out, and witnessed all of these amazing moments (besides #37 in 2004 obviously) live. I'm too busy this summer to fly out to Vegas, but I can't wait to spend the weekend having like 6 tabs open on twitch. The FGC has soooo many great moments that are still being made, and I'm so happy that live tournaments are back.... online just ain't the same.
11:28 I believe this is a perfect example of conditioning your opponent to do what you want. You see hugo do a few claps in succession which in turn there is only 2 responses for that 1) block the attack but get no punish damage 2) back hop to avoid the attack and punish. However hugo knew that he would choose option 2 to try and get damage because he forced him to do so which in turn he punished with an anti air. A true example of conditioning.
Stuff like this is why I wish I was better at fighting games. Beat traditional one I’m good at is MK and even then I say I’m good cause I can do the inputs of the specials…but that’s about it really
@@thetrophygamer3606Two friends and I were "good" each at different fighting games, one of them at KoF, the other one at MK and I at SF because we knew combos like you sayed but that was it, so each dominated the other in their own fighthing games just because that. Until one day I tried to beat SF games at the hardest difficulty for a challenge and also played some online games, and learned that playing as I was was very noobish, that I needed to play accordinly to the enemie, read them, react and even condition them as the original coment mentioned. After that even when I didn't knew combos for the other games my friends couldn't beat me anymore, yes I loosed sometimes but I was dominating them with just footsies, and everytime I had a good life advantage I let them hit me at wake ups specials/supers/etc to condition them to belive that wake ups worked, so they keep doing it giving me free punishes. I even told them how I started to dominate them, so they tried to not be that predectible and tried to play footsies too but it takes some time to get used to it and sometimes you forget about it. Haven't reunited with them since covid thou so I hope they didn't forgot and give me a.good fight next time (haven't played any figthing game in years too but this video hyped me again for them)

A fair amount of before/after frame data to work with, but it was PRETTY hard to reflexively *parry* things, and harder to get the timing for a red-parry, so....you pretty much had to KNOW it was happening, or was hard-coded to know when the block --> parry timing was occuring, which was SO precise that you couldn't counter-correct on Chun-Li's SA II.)
So Daigo KNEW he was in the same position, and was reflexive-parrying on every "tic" that Chun-Li was offering.
(And was preeeeetty hard to do, on the fly, with charge-buffering and reflexive reactions to stuffs that was bein' thrown at you, and g'aaaaaaaaaah!)
this comment is severely underrated, you did your research and shows exactly why Diago is a fuckin menace from what I've seen.
Well said! As a melee player I see that street fighter is harder than I thought.
Never played fighting games other than casually with friends but this video made me appreciate it that much more and this comment explained the magnitude even more!
Thank you for adding more context to that incredible moment
Man I'm 35 today. I used to play this game. My brother and I DIDNT EVEN ATTEMPT PARRIES! We'd just block.
They were too precise. And this parries all of the combo, then an air parry and then hitting and combo finishing himself.
THE F!?

Migatte no Gokui,身み勝がっ手ての極ごく意い, agree
Truly nothing in esports history comes close to it.
Presanth Michael The *only* other possible thing like it is Wombo Combo, which is still said across all esports to this day.
Yukari MAiG u should have been in japan during the SBO years, in japan evo moment 37 was jus a monday
Daigo umehara is basically the only Esport player i will ever know of.....i mean i just saw this video and still Daigo the beast! >.
Actually, when pushed into a corner, it's 17 for Ken as well. This is the only sequence where you only need 15. Ryu/Ken, in the middle of the stage.
I wonder how many people saw Evo moment 37 and said "holy shit I want to do that" and started playing street fighter because of that moment just like me
In sfv... You can do that (as ryu only)
i would've liked this, but it was at 37 so....
Louis Maximus Oraiz yeah, with no brain mashing it.

Temerith Don’t ever compare Dragon Ball Shit to a legend like this.
What's wrong with Dragon Ball?
I remember they put #37 in a PlayStation version practice mode of SF 3rd Strike. I figured I'd give it a shot. After all, how hard can it be in a controlled setting? After half an hour of trying I stopped because my fingers started to hurt and I literally never even made it to Chun Li's second rep of kicks. Shit is impossible. Made me appreciate it even more.
The timing involved is mind blowing
You actually need to parry slower than the strikes would usually hit (about 1/4 speed) with a slightly longer gap before the 2nd round of kicks, to be fair it is a lot easier with an arcade stick or if you 'tap' the analogue stick if you don't have an arcade stick . Parrying in this game is satisfying
And he did it in a tournament. He wasn't the first one tho.
The timing is not the same as the actual cps3 original system. 💡 it’s easier to parry on the actual cps3 original Impress set up
And he did it in a tournament. In EVO, not some training match. Crazy
12:10 Daigo sitting down right after Alex Valle’s victory was like: Ok dude, your luck ends now.

one more thing about evo moment #37, chun li super is the fastest in the game, you can't parry it on visual reaction, you must react to the sound or predict it.

Respect
Brilliant story telling.

Dan Lorett Valle was the MASTER it was like Daniel San trying to beat a Mr miyagi
yeah that moment was something very special for so many reasons - i had the chance to see that live and it was fantastic.
