A guy behind me in the cinema muttered Papyrus to his friend when Avatar 2 was about to start and I was creasing with laughter
When I was watching the film I noticed they kept the Papyrus font for the Na'vi language-translated subtitles, holding my laughter during these moments was difficult 😂
I don't see movies with people, but I am going to have to take "a friend" to Avatar 2 at the budget theater.
I'm laughing at "creasing with laughter"! 🤣
What the fuck is creasing?
@@MinorityRespecter88 if you're from England as I am, you may sometimes describe uncontrollable laughter as creasing. Hope this helps! 👍

Ryan acted the shit out of that.
Bill Murray said the secret to SNL is not to be funny, but to be a great actor. Some of the funniest people, like Chris Rock, were the worst on the show.
I don't know. If it were me I wouldn't have to act. That's me in real life haha
Sup yep. Great comedic actors are not trying to be funny... whether it's on SNL or elsewhere. They treat the acting work in the same way they'd treat a drama. :)

The fact that this is so accurate even to people who aren’t graphic designers but just know fonts a little bit and care a minimal amount about the right font being picked. The fact that this skit was written by someone who GETS it, or knows someone who gets it. Ryan Gosling seriously doing good reacting for an SNL skit, which elevates it beyond what it could’ve very well been with a lesser actor. The fact that the final Papyrus was written in Comic Sans. Amazing.
you just KNOW that this sketch came about because it had been legitimately bothering one of SNL’s writers. this sketch is equal parts comedy and therapy

knowing how much control J Cameron has over everything on the film, it's probably him who choose de font.
If I were to guess what happened, Papyrus was probably used as a placeholder in drafts, storyboards, e-mails, etc. When time came to come up with an original font, Cameron and the graphic designer probably agreed that the Papyrus font already worked well, after trying some different designs. Perhaps they thought it would be funny or ironic to use a standard MS Office font for the world's most expensive movie, too. Papyrus is not a bad font though, in terms of shape, it gets a bad rep, probably because of the "damage" that's added to the font, and its frequent use.
Alternatively, perhaps the graphic designer secretly did a lousy job and got away with it.
@@ReddoFreddo yeah but I don’t think it’s literally Papyrus, they clearly modified it

Best thing about this is my graphic design teacher was actually asked to design some posters for Avatar in like 2008 at the design firm he worked at, but he and his boss never heard back after they submit them. Months later, the papyrus poster comes out and they were furious. His name is also Stephen like Gosling's character in this video, so you can imagine how many people sent him this video when it came out lol
What was his response to the skit?
Why were they furious?
And did they mind the papyrus font? If so, why?
@@haelotny6523 I would assume they were furious because they went to the effort of doing actual graphic design work for the poster, but then the movie people ghosted them, didn't use the acknowledge the work they did, and - to top the insult off - used something that a child with a basic knowledge of Microsoft Word could have made?
I feel like this skit HAS to be based on a real conversation someone on SNL had with a graphic designer.
@@s_rofbear Not uncommon. Spike Lee stole the designer's work for his terrible "Oldboy" remake posters. The guy finally had to try and contact him through Twitter , where Spike Lee treated him like shit for daring to complain about not getting paid. The classic "You got paid in exposure" garbage.

I’m sorry, but could you explain the humor of this to me? Like is there some universal hate of papyrus I’m not aware of, or is the whole joke his over reaction? I’ve just always felt like I’m missing the joke on this one.
@@khoward9512 I'm responding a bit late but I think the joke is moreso about how expensive the movie was (cost hundreds of millions of dollars) just to use a cheap font for its title and marketing. So Ryan is pissed because this professional graphic designer was probably paid a lot of money to just carelessly choose a stupid font and "got away with it". Lots of people do hate papyrus though.
@@khoward9512 I think the humor comes from the contrast between the structure and the content. The short has the tropes of a serious, dramatic piece - the tone, the music, the imagery, the tortured soul struggling with a psychological burden they cannot bear, the thousand-year stares, the therapist, the frustrated spouse, the obsessive fixation. It's a well-made dramatic piece - all of the acting, production values, writing - it all speaks to a piece that is earnestly trying to convey a heart-wrenching story.
But then the content is about the most trivial thing imaginable.
So the humor comes from taking a small observational joke - "the Avatar logo looks like some guy just opened Word and picked the Papyrus font" - and using it as the core of a dramatic story of a tortured soul.
These two things - the core of the joke and the presentation - do not belong together. The presentation creates an expectation for the content (seriousness), and the content creates an expectation for the presentation (lighthearted, off-hand observation), and both of these expectations are continuously reinforced and subverted throughout.
Ur smart
Just like everyone hates Comic Sans - and there are plenty of memes, jokes, and sketches about it. Papyrus is considered the second most hated font. Helvetica is usually considered the most liked font.

I am so hypersensitive to poor body mechanics that I thought Charlize Theron looked like shit in Atomic Blonde:

But I loved Amy Johnston in The Gate:

I'm having trouble answering your question because: (1) My memories of all the fight scenes I've seen have faded. I'm having trouble recalling the specific moves that seemed unrealistic to me. (2) The flaws I see in fight scenes are so complex and subtle that I'm having trouble putting them into words. (3) Fight scenes in the last 10 years are actually so consistently excellent I have trouble finding flaws.
But I can mention 2 things:
(1) Sloppy body mechanics.
Movements that look strong to most viewers look "ragdoll" to me. I see big men getting dropped by punches with no body-mass behind them. I see blocks stop haymakers, even though the defender's joints and posture are angled in a way that relaxes the muscles too much to support a block. I see postures that are not stable enough to maintain balance against a powerful punch, and yet the punch doesn't stagger them at all.
(2) Defenders and Attackers moving in unison.
This makes it obvious they both memorized all the moves ahead of time. It takes an extra level of self-control to wait for a split second for your partner's attack to travel halfway toward you, before you launch your defense. This was the hardest thing for my choreography partners to learn, and is the reason I lost them all. Its easy to regurgitate a list of moves. Because it allows you - to a certain extent - to ignore the full reality of your partners body and just live in your own head. But making your next move dependent on their next move is a much more vulnerable and intimate relationship. It feels too close to a real fight and it feels kinda gay. Nobody tolerates it for long.
Check out Gosling's SNL Santa Baby.
I love the way he says "IT WASN'T ENOUGH!".
ikr looks like it could be a scene from a huge movie lmao
I know, probably my favorite part of the entire sketch. 😂
Goslin driving trought the night with a blinkless look on his face Is so iconic.
The absolute best graphic design joke in this is the use of Comic Sans at the end
Damn this literally is my favorite sketch. I come back every two months lol
“well whatever they did, IT WAAAAAASNT ENOUGH!”
Dude u seriously need to get a life. Every TWO months???
Lmao best part of this sketch haha

Pure acting.

One of the best lines in the film, er "short."

Yes!! 😂
I love how they also kind of recreated scenes from movies Ryan acted in like DRIVE when he's driving through the night or THE NOTEBOOK when he's standing in the "rain", talking to the woman. Real work of art
THANKS for your comment. I thought one certain part of the skit might've been from a movie (although a movie I haven't seen), but the part I thought it about wasn't him driving or him in the rain. When you mentioned him being in the rain from The Notebook, I remembered that from The Notebook. Thanks again.
Am I the only one that thinks that, despite this being an SNL sketch, Ryan Gosling's performance is flawless lol
Truly award-worthy..!
It elevates this to one of the best shorts SNL has every produced.
SNL really shines when they have real actors as guests.
@Sturgeon lol ok chief

@Sturgeon Missing my point entirely.

Not really, sometimes they still have terrible writing and the good actors make it seem less so
Comedian Julio Torres wrote this Skit.
Thank you Julio Torres.
Yes! This has his comedic style all over.
I was rewatching Customer Service when I finally learned the name of the genius in the comments

As a kid who used to do that, I felt attacked tbh
It would've been more acceptable if he strategically picked leaves.
*yanking leaves
That line brings you into this sketch and then you never escape. Absolutely brilliant.
It's become a tradition for me to watch this at least once a year.. Remind me that no matter how hard I work, how much talent and refined skill I have over other designers. Know that there's someone out there getting paid more, living a better life. Because of Papyrus.

So now you’re worried about the sequels that are coming out ?
Anytime anyone mentions a passion for graphic design or fonts, I have to share this video with them.
So far, it NEVER misses. Some of Mr. Gosling's BEST work.
This is a masterpiece. This is what every real graphic designer thought back then and even today. When we wake up from nightmares of crimes like comic sans or papyrus. This will never not be relevant or true. Ryan outdid himself.
I kind of get the Comic Sans-hate. But not so much on the Papyrus. At least its not Jokerman!
@@kittymama9186 Also I believe the end credit is comic sans, which is even more genius because its more typography humor.

It was trashing Comic Sans. Comic Sans and Papyrus are globally hated equally; thus, they made a final joke.
I cannot and will not get over how his voice breaks when he says ‘I know what you did’. Stunning.
It's called acting, alot of people act by playing a role. SNL has alot of actors who have no talent. Ryan gosling has earned my stamp of approval. He became the character and felt the emotions he was told to act like he was feeling. Great shit
