  • In this video, we're going to take a look at what's the problem with setting up multiple monitors in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and how we can solve that problem.
    I also go deeper and explain what I believe the problem is from a game developer's point of view, and what I think the developers of the simulator can do to remedy the situation.

    You are so on target! As a programmer in the business world I never thought about the whole culling aspect of rendering, etc. The way you broke this down into a simple triangle becoming a polygram and then many polygrams and then exponentially grow that for each detailed complex object. And so forth and so on ... just listen to/watch this video...wow! Thank you! And to know that you develop my all time favorite game tops it off. Thanks for taking the time to share this. Well done!!!

    Excellent video. I do not know enough about the subject the say whether you are really onto something or not. But I do know enough about big projects and the compromises or give and take that go into a successful product, to say that you make a plausible argument. Further, you did an outstanding job of making your argument. You laid a proper foundation by explaining your vocabulary, and using analogies that could be understood. You tied it all together in a logical and consistent presentation. Thank you.

    It might just be me but the issue isn't about supporting multiple monitors because Nvidia Surround worked fine for equal resolutions, the BIG issue is the inability to pop out the panels such as radio stack and put that on a different monitor, or the instrument cluster (other than the G1000). Popping out the G1000 onto a monitor of different resolution works fine too but the issue I have with it is that there are no buttons, only the display. This is pretty useless as it now means that to make any settings, I have to peek down at the virtual cockpit view and to fiddle about trying to hover over exactly the right point. It would be SO much easier to use the touch screen right in front of me upon which i'm displaying the G1000!

      You are correct. The problem is that the "beautiful scenery", is, and will always be a real performance slug in FS2020. Too many poorly formed models and bloopers due to AI creation of 3D models.

      That is correct. Use 2560x1080 on UW middle monitor and it will eliminate lapping problem. Still is extremely distorted towards outer edges. FS2020 IS NOT A TRUE MULTI-MONITOR system and will always have distortion. The only true multi-monitor is X-Plane 11.55. I use both FS2020 and XP.

  • @rickjohnson8022
    @rickjohnson8022 3 роки тому +1

    Xplane has had multi-monitor setup for years. Sounds like your not a pilot, so the deals is an actual pilot has to look around all the time. Inside and outside the cockpit. He must continually scanning for other aircraft, the weather, and if you're flying VFR you are looking for identifiable objects on the ground as well. This is especially crucial when landing, a lot of the time your vision out the front is limited. So if you watch some Xplane videos you can see how Michael Brown goes thru the setup process for each monitor.

    • @DownTheRabbit-Hole
      @DownTheRabbit-Hole 2 роки тому

      Stretching in FS2020 will always distort outer edges, whether you use Nvidia Surround or "Windowed". Russ Barlow has a great video comparison as well as Michael Brown. FS2020 has not rolled out true multi-monitor because the way the scenery was AI modeled with poorly formed models and other performance related bloopers. It will take them forever to solve this worldwide. Multi-monitor is a real performance slug and I don't expect they will be multi for a long time. My X-Plane 3 wide with Air Manger Touchscreen below is very smooth in Vulcan, even when taxiing and turning on ramp etc. FS2020 is a real stutter machine when turning while taxiing. This is the ultimate test, not from 2-4 thousand feet or higher. RW pilot and IGI. Good Luck.

    I have the horsepower to render 3 screens from 3 camera angles. For me it is MSFS 2020 that is lacking. I have several flight sims that have proper support for triple monitors, also lots of sim racing titles with triple monitor support.

    Solution for 2 monitors at different resolutions. Open your Radeon software, then settings (top right beside the bell icon) go to display tab and enable virtual super resolution on the 1080p monitor. Right click the desktop and open display settings, go to display resolution and you will see that you can now set the 1080p monitor to 2560 x 1440 (or higher if you need to). This might not be perfect for everyone but it works well for me, hope this helps someone.

  • @HamVR

    I've been using Nvidia Surround but with 3 x 1440p all the same size and resolution and it works fairly well (on a 1080Ti on medium). A downside of this setup is the side monitors look like half horizontal resolution and stretched, rather than 3 seperate perspective cameras. I suspect multi camera/perspective per monitor are on the game roadmap, being a simulator and all. For the ultimate 'immersive experience' though I find VR still beats multiple monitor setup (for me personally) which I'm looking forward to being added to the game soon and I suspect this is keeping the dev team busy. The game has had great sales success, so hopefully all of these features are coming. It's also great timing with the Nvidia 3000 series, especially the 3070 being such good value for the performance (compared to previous gen GPUs) we might see some more graphically intense features being added sooner than otherwise expected.

      Ham. VR is sort of like 3D movies, you either like it or you don't. As a flight instructor, it is OK for Helos and VFR, but extremely poor for IFR training and flying on Pilotedge or Vatsim. The hand controllers are too quirky when twisting knobs etc. Too many misfires. Try using hand controller on G1000. Pretty bad experience. Works OK on cockpit switches tho. I find myself removing the headset to write a clearance a real hastle. Hand controllers are like a glorified mouse. Until they come up with a better controller solution VR is only mediocre experience. Perhaps a "Glove" . The best solution is still 3 wide with Air Manager touchscreen below for RW flight simming. IMO No offense.

    1.) If they would have cared about performance at all, they would have gone with DirectX12. So that argument falls flat.
    2.) Let the user decide, what kind of performance is acceptable.
    3.) Ever had a look at racing sims (sims, not games)? Every small indy company is able to provide proper multi monitor support.
    4.) MS just wasted 7+ Billion on a fucking slightly-above-average game developer. But spending 100k on development for proper multi monitor support is suddenly outrages? Come on...

    Culling from the renderer, yes, for performance reasons. But I remember them showing a video clip in the feature discovery series demonstrating airmass simulation where wind would actually weave between buildings. If that's the case, smaller buildings behind a larger buildings would still need to be calculated to some degree (just not visually rendered?). I doubt they'd use something as complex as mesh geometry to calculate this. However at the very least a bare bones box collider must still be present right..? What are your thoughts regarding how they may be handling this?
    There is a lot that 2020 does well on a visual level. Dithering between multiple tree billboards for example. Really smart way to make convincing 3D trees. Well above and beyond XP11 on that front. In terms of multi-monitor? Multi-monitor with raw power shouldnt be an excuse. Laminar pulled it off, allowing the end user to offload the workload across multiple PC's on a network and it works just fine. The reality here is, Microsoft pushed for this sim to be released far too early at the expense of Asobo's reputation. I was onboard testing since Alpha 3, and just about everyone in the Alpha testers community said don't pull the trigger when the release date was announced.
    From my personal perspective as a 3D artist & developer, I think they hit the nail on the coffin with visuals. Some of the best use of SSR i've seen. Amazing cloud volumes far above Simul's TrueSky which was the standard for most flight sims to this point. Really think this sim's going to be amazing in a year. Esp with DX12 post release but as it stands, it really could have really could have kept baking up till December at the very least, just to avoid a lot of the launch issues / mixed reception on launch.

    • @AlexInFlatland
      @AlexInFlatland  3 роки тому +1

      @Skoots, I would 'like' this multiple times if I could :) That was a great analysis of things as they stand so far.
      To your first point, I think you're right. In my current experience we would usually have several "physics worlds', some more detailed than others. So one of those would most likely be composed of primitive shapes, like cubes, cones, spheres etc, where collision checks are dead simple and cheap perf-wise. So yeah approximating a whole building with a cube-like shape regardless of any "fancy architecture" is likely how they speed that up. Doing stuff like world-to-screen transforms for rendering is generally slower than doing some wind vector math for building collision. At least I think so.
      As for the other stuff, I touched slightly on that shipping deadlines topic at the end of my video. It always happens nowadays. Big publishers usually don't want to push releases back and just go for the after-release-fixes. But I 100% agree with you that the game will be perfection in a year or so. If this game has the life-expectancy of the previous MFSX then I'm sure even people that weren't happy with the original release will have time to grow to love it :)
      Thanks for offering your point of view here, I really appreciate it.

  • @paullaska1361
    @paullaska1361 3 роки тому +1

    You're most likely correct about how MS and Asobo reached the decision not to include multiple monitor support; i.e. marketing reasons. However, that doesn't preclude them from implementing the feature, and telling people they will have to reduce their resolution for the feature to run; in fact, most gamers are already used to playing with the settings to get the best fps vs. graphical fidelity, and marketers at game companies are well aware of this. Also, marketers at game companies like to have more feature items to list off, and this one seems a rather important one for the target audience.
    The idea that the target market would have been a driving factor, isn't a good argument, because the target market is mostly flight-sim enthusiasts, who already have multiple monitor setups with FSX, XPlane11, Prepare3d, etc.
    Your product deadline argument is also a likely candidate for why multiple monitor support didn't make it into the game at launch. Having worked in games, I'm aware of how real this concern can be. What I suspect is more likely though, is that they have support for the feature implemented, but it's not hitting all the performance requirements. Or, they still have significant bugs with the feature, and rather than hold up the launch for the one feature, they disabled it and shipped the game on time.
    Overall, you gave a nice explanation. And your idea with the frame-buffers is an interesting one.

      @@RobertGeez Considering multiple monitor support and VR both require the render pipeline to do double duty (or more for more than two monitors), it’s kind of the same class of challenges to solve. Also VR requirements for a high frame rate, to avoid nausea, would have likely pushed them back even further. But yeah, no VR seems like missed opportunity for the target demographic.

    Nvidia surround display spanning is working pretty good for me in FS2020. 1080p 144hz on all three monitors, GTX1080FE and high settings, looks and plays great (although the aspect ratio for the side monitors is pretty stretched at the extremes). All in all, I'm getting solid performance with no noticeable jitters, and the janky stretching on the side monitors is perfectly fine if used solely for peripheral vision.

    intelligent multiple monitor gaming has been accomplished for years IF the game designer prioritizes it from the start. The X series of space flight sis for example allows you to intelligently assign what goes to what screen. For example you can make one screen the cockpit, another a dedicated map or instruments. Or stretch across three screens with a wrap around cockpit.

    I am flight instructor and simmer since last century. LOL 1) Change the native resolution of UW monitor in NVIDIA panel to 2560x1080 and you will eliminate overlap problem Left 1920x1080 middle 2560x1080 and right 1920x1080. If you stretch "windowed " mode to full 6400x1080 there will be extreme distortion towards outer edges. The other option is to use Nvidia Physx stretch. This still has the same problem of distortion. Windows IS NOT a true multi-monitor flight sim. I own both X-Plane where I instruct, and FS2020. I doubt if FS2020 will be a true multi-monitor system for quite awhile due to performance problems and stutters. I think they are moving towards Xbox single monitor and VR and the flight sim gaming community and not real world multi monitor training environment. On X-Plane I use 3 wide Dell 27"G-Sync (180 degree view down each wing with no outer edge distortion) 22" Asus Touchscreen below for Air Manager/Knobster. I use iPad for Instructor operating station. The experience is completely smooth with rare stutters, even while taxiing and panning. No keyboard or Mouse needed. This is FAA requirement. Notice that many BATD FAA approved flight sims are 3 wide with Touchscreen below (Gleim or Touchtrainer) or Hardware instead of touchscreen, but still 3 wide. BTW, VR and Controllers DO NOT work well for training or youtubers, especially Instrument training. I have free hobby website where you can view my 3 wide system. Not affiliated or selling anything. AviationKnowledge dot Org. Good Luck
    The best monitor solution (not perfect) for FS2020 is a 49" Super Ultra wide with Air Manger Touchscreen below. This is simply the same as 2 monitors (32x9 format) without the bezel. Flightsimmer and UA-camr "Squirrel" uses and records from 49, I think.

    First of all it seems to me that you did not sit in a cockpit and fly a plane, the pilot has a 180 degree vision. He should not look back, only to the sides. This is how all professional simulators are built with a 180-degree vision. The problem is that this simulator is a game and that's how you define it. And its purpose is more to show us a beautiful view and not to fly a plane the closest way to a real plane. The concern of the developers and this is how I sum up your interesting lecture are afraid that the resolution and the landscape will not look good. I prefer a less good view but a real possibility and a real feeling of flying a plan.

Nvidia surround does work but the geometric scaling is all out of proportion. Also it doesnt help that Asobo have locked out the ability to modify the files

    You are over-complicating the situation.
    1> Any gamer and certainly any simmer knows that when you are doing multi-monitors you want ALL monitors to MATCH. This is a requirement. It's been like this for many years. Putting efforts into coding for multiple resolutions is wasteful.
    2> Both windows and video drivers from the mid to high end video cards offer monitor spanning. This too has been like this for many years - and has been a requirement for simming. Windowing has never been the preferred method and introduces a host of problems well beyond what you have described here. Spanning combines all the monitors to a single plane (H or V) and then treats AND presents to it as a single monitor. For example - if you have 3x 1920x1080 arranged in a typical, 3 monitor left center right configuration - you enable the spanning and are presented with a single monitor running at 5760x1080. Windows presents this resolution to the game and it comes up as a selectable mode.
    3> If you do still have another monitor (I run 4) and it is a different resolution (or you don't want it attached as part of the other 3) then you do not select that in your monitor spanning configuration. It can be treated as an auxiliary monitor - and for simmers it is a good place to land the instruments, GPS, radios, route, charts, etc. (See: www.rogerdodger.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Flight-Sim-multiple-monitors.jpg)

    I mean, I get that it would hurt performance....but they should at least give us the option....some people have high end hardware, and better hardware will exist in the future, so the game should support it. Just because the "typical PC" can't run it smoothly yet doesn't mean no pc can or will. Someone with a 3970x, 64 GB of RAM, and gtx 3090 might be able to handle multiple views for instance....might be an overkill example, but just because the "average" pc can't do it doesn't mean the game shouldn't support it.

      Hmm, I would try lowering the graphics options to the absolute minimum (just to test) to see if maybe you're pushing your hardware too hard. If that runs, then you can slowly start bumping up the details. You could also try re-installing the game in case it's caused by a corrupt file or something like that. Otherwise, I would reach out to Microsoft support as they would have more details on what the cause might be.

      That's a good tip since it effectively "fakes" the monitor setup in software to show up as a single monitor, although it doesn't really address the issues I mentioned. Nvidia Surround/AMD Eyefinity, even windows extended desktop mode all want to force the same vertical resolution between panels. So if I try Nvidia Surround with my current setup, it's forcing me to run the 3 monitors at 5760x1080 at 60 Hz. So it's trying to force my middle 3440x1440p @ 144hz monitor to match the lowest common denominator. If you do have the same panels all around this would at least allow you to run it as a "pseudo-single" monitor so you don't have to do windowed mode with stretching manually. Thanks for posting that tip!

    Seems to be a lot of heavy overthinking it going on here. Nvidia Surround works perfectly well. You would just have to sacrifice the 1440 on your middle monitor and run 1080 across the 3. Fair trade off to get such a wide view I would think.

    • @AlexInFlatland
      @AlexInFlatland  3 роки тому

      We already discussed this with Patrick G. below. I don't think downscaling my 3440x1440 144hz to 1920x1080 60hz is a good trade myself. Especially since that resolution looks terribly stretched on an ultra wide monitor. The center monitor is where most of my focus goes, I want it to look great. The side monitors are mostly peripheral vision for immersion purposes, so I'm ok if those aren't the best. But it's a subjective thing for sure, I can see people being ok with that tradeoff.

    yes you obviously have a decent knowledge of these techniques, however you completely missed the point, other simulators, yes even most modern ones, managed to implement true triple screen support. Lets take proper driving simulator assetto corsa competezione. It is modern racing simulator which was made by a team Kunos which is very small company, only 20 employees, compared to asobo studios (mfs2020 dev team) 220. usually comparing simulators running with only 1 viewport compared to 3, doesnt have big perf impact on cpu, majority of increased workload comes from increased resolution which still applies if you use current mfs2020 triple screen technique. This is simply business decision to save some money and dev time not because "its too demanding".
    Thing is its very hard to be a simulator dev team because your audience is significantly different compared to regular AAA game audience, its not as casual, it's significantly more demanding for various features and has much better knowledge on your product, but they are also much more "loyal" and will most likely support you even if they dont play your sim as much. mfs2020 has also casual audience as well, but it also has significant portion of proper simulator fans too, and catering only to one side in this case is not fair.

    engines have limitations, but the demand for devs to hit a deadline and not address the market isn't a good excuse. It's lazy. Scalable GUIs for wider views and super ultrawide monitors, which are on the market, is not just a Microsoft glossover, it's a game developer trend. Exclusivity and lack of modding is killing the PC industry. Fortunately, MS at least allows for mods. I love what MSFS 2020 could be, but there are many features that are missing. Before I even complain about lack of proper monitor support, let's talk about the inability to pop out panels or to fly without a cockpit view. None of these things should ever have been left out. The more this game appeals to the console, the less sim it will become. Frankly, no developer should ever design a GUI that doesn't scale to a resolution. No offense, but I go into files and make manual tweaks through scripting just to rescale the GUI to push to the center monitor. I don't know anything about coding. I just had a need to fix and did. Some times I learned how to use binhex and change the code. If I can tweak a file using BinHex, then a slider or data field in settings could allow me to make those adjustments. To imply that these things are too cumbersome for devs is not true. LAZY. I'm not criticizing you personally. I liked your presentation. I'm criticizing the trends of the developmental industry, who in defense of the developers are driven by very greedy gaming companies. Microsoft could look at ways for the engine to determine elevation to lower the resolution of distant stuff as it isn't necessary. Altitude in combination with camera angle could be a solution. I think it would be awesome if the engine would be capable of replacing the photogrammetry with an actual 3d model based on altitude and distance from view. AI could be developed to enhance the photogrammetry into a much higher resolution 3d object when you are at a very low elevation.

      Also, how about programming the code to allow people to install a second GPU to take on some of the processing and relieve the CPU. Don't get it. Seems very possible. Suspect the hardware developers don't want game developers to do those sorts of things, because the hardware companies don't want people holding on to their older gear. The whole industry is a giant monopoly scheme. Make sure the games demand new video cards and CPUs and you'll get backing from all the big tech companies. It's a disgrace.

    well, to be blunt, that's garbage. it was well articulated but if you know a bit about the software then you hear just ignorant rant. Multi-view rendering is very easy to do - all you need is to ALLOW IT, Unfortunately "thanks to ShitR goggles the feature is locked out so people are corralled like dumb animals into buying that. That's all - nothing else is required to make it happen. IF allowed you could render 2-3 windows, specify size, zoom and FOV and you are done. The performance excuse is nice sounding however you can reduce the detail and we can balance the performance ourselves. I've been running 6 outputs, 4 windows 270 surround 12 years ago out of one PC and it was all about tuning and optimizing what you render and what you can actually see. Unfortunately we don't have a free market so people don't get what they want even if it would mean more profit and happier customers but instead you are not given a choice and you are suppose to like it
