- The Metallica Report - your official, weekly guide for all things Metallica, straight from the source. New episode every Wednesday: metallica.lnk.to/TheMetallica...
When it comes to Metallica’s creative process, Greg Fidelman has become the “unofficially official” fifth member of the band.
He began his music career in the late ’80s as the lead guitarist of his own group, but Greg really hit his stride on the other side of the studio glass about a decade later. From engineer to mixer to producer, this Grammy-winner has worked with some major heavyweights, including Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Adele, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Slayer.
As you may know - and as Steffan, Renée, and the whole Metallica operation are thankful for - he’s been firmly entrenched in the Metallica camp since 2008, when he joined Rick Rubin’s Death Magnetic production team.

We need a making-of 72 Seasons studio video! Similar to Death Magnetic and Hardwired.
It's just not that interesting since they began using the modern studio process... it was way more profound during the black album and load era... even as a recording engineer, it's not as fun with one guy at a time. The live rehearsal situation had so much more vibe

As per one of the forum moderators, this type of footage won’t be released. Not sure the reasoning but that was the last thing I heard
I agree. I wish they would show that footage.
@@TDAshton "won't be released" - is that a quote, if so that would imply it was recorded, which means the same thing anything ever recorded means. It will come out eventually whether anyone says it will or not.
Give me a box set or an album with photos and lyrics rather than a download. Kids nowadays don't know the joy after working all summer long to finally being able to buy an album, and dive into the spoils of your own copy of your favourite rock music.
@PhantomFilmAustralia , this comment is too true! Good point. Valid.
I mean I gotta work for my cds
Guess I'm an exception, I buy my own CDs 😂 I just bought myself my favorite zztop album to jam too while I drive
😎🤘
I am not a "kid nowadays", but I buy downloads as well. It's convience. Where would I play a CD today? On a phone? My car or my computer can store tens of thousands of songs. They enable playlists and you can fill in songs of other albums, without the need to switch a CD everytime. I bought the live CD from Hamburg because I went to that gig ... all I did with it was putting it to my computer, and rip all songs from it. Now I have to store the CD somewhere.
I absolutely get that some people like to have a real physical object to have in their hands, that the sound of vinyl is different, that you can also display the CDs that you own. I am not arguing against those people. I am just saying that there are people out there with other preferences, and the way they listen to the music doesn't make somehow wrong. Just different.

Awesome chat! Thank you for the video version…..I know it’d be an editing task, but damn….I would LOVE more video components to the podcast like this. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
YES ON VIDEO AND ON UA-cam! I'm on the train to work but can't wait to come back and watch this
I love these podcasts in video form. Please give us more.
Greg has the best engineering job on the planet! Always great to hear a Metallica studio deep dive. Thank you for the vid!
Is this the first video of the podcast? I much more enjoy this than just audio only. More plz
A great interview, Greg is a brilliant man
Montreal loves Metallica and the Metallica Report ! You guys are awesome for doing this !
My 17 y.o. son is a huge Metallica fan as a result of hearing them pretty much since birth. He has seen them more times than I have and knows more about them now than I do. Metallica is like a part of our family almost.
Música nueva de Metallica
You guys definitely need to release the full video for that "Fight Fire With Fire" soundcheck!!! 🤯🤯🤯 1:15
Valla esperaba una entrevista como está gracias por hacerlo realidad... Metallica. 🤘😎
It would be cool if Metallica brought Fleming Rasmussen back to engineer one more album. Greg is a very good producer and engineer. It would be great to hear the combination of tones and art that would come out of that collab.
I hope metallica is already writing new songs, they have nothing to rest from, because the concert schedule is not heavy. With such breaks between concerts and vacations, you can practice new music.Damn it, two and a half studio discs in 15 years. The skills are going away, there is no place to wait and pull. All films have been shot, Antarctica has been played. Will we hear some more really heavy metallics? At least in the album version. With all due respect, but you're back to Loads.
great interview
1:06 the guitars sound massive! What I find particularly interesting though is during the actual concert, James doesn't do the stops in the intro and keeps playing. It's a bit closer to the original recording, and honestly sounds even more badass. I wonder if he meant to do that or forgot to do the stops.
Imagine going from being a runner making tea for artists to the full time producer for MetallicA
I’d like to see the rest of that rehearsal video! Been a long time since we had one.
Wish Metallica would release an album with that Mesa Mark iic+ Mark iv guitar tone. Love Metallica but haven’t loved their guitar tone since Reload.
I wish they would release their own Impulse Responses for us guitarists.
@@pureblood8198 you can find those easily, they are generated from isolated guitars from each album.
Excelente entrevista ! Los felicito por tan importante información . Cheers!
METALLICA IS THE REASON WE STARTED OUR BAND
I was at the Sofi show both days .. I’m so glad they played fight fire with fire.

Metallica, probably the best band of the 80s.
Great interview! Greg is a very cool guy!
Greg is way too comfortable.

Great video. Very interesting.
I'm sad because I can't afford to go to your concert in Poland, and I don't know if such an opportunity will ever come again, but it doesn't change the fact that you are the best band ever.

I recently realised Greg worked on one of my favourite albums, Days of the New' II Green album.
Id heard that Rick Ruban was interested in working with travis meeks at one point,im wondering is that through Greg.
Greg sucks
Fidelman is the ultimate "yes" man. Metallica could play any riff and fidelman will say it's the best ever. He's an even bigger dickrider than cliff burnstein.

Hello Metallica !!
METALLICA FAMILY
Death magnetic is in dire need of a remaster/remix. It is so overblown. I found a version online that was mixed from guitar hero or something and it’s the only one I listen to.
LULU is NOT a Metallica album, it is a Lou Reed album. Change my mind.
It’s a Lou reed album but Metallica are definitely the concrete of it. If those riffs were on a separate Metallica album everyone would like it.
We do need soundcheck goodness on the channel. It will make for a good series of videos (y).
I still think Load and Reload are achieved as Metallica's best produced, best sounding and best mixed albums but Greg has really achieved a sound for the band both on record and live
Fidelman did a fantastic job producing 72 Seasons.
Please I hope they upload the "making of" 72 seasons.
Awesome 😅❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤interview
I love Metallica. Hi Kirk.
metallica needs to do the recording session documentary thing again - the last few albums between st anger and Hardwired had 2-4 hour documentary like movies of all recording studio stuff - that's why i love those albums - the seasons one not so much
I hope they make modern versions of thier classic album 1983-1988 era
Master and justice don't really need it, despite being recorded in the 80s
A beefy ride the lightning tho 🤔
St anger needs a redo.
Please, God NO!!!! The modern Metallica sound in cringe worthy, heavy country. What they really need to do is re-record everything from the mid 90s. When they actually sounded HEAVY METAL. Rock and Fidelman = Great hard rock producers, but NOT great Metallica producers. They have ruined what was the world's greatest band.
@@takamae.Well I want them to Remix AJFA album with bass and fix the snare in St. anger
@@Sana-Tozaki-TWICE-KPop-1998 why would you want to "fix" the soul of St. Anger??🤦♂
@@MrGenexxx sorry if I'm being rude...the snare kinda reminds me of Duality by Slipknot....

OML FIRST, I FKN LOVE YOU, METALLICA
Just bought and listened to all the albums and in my opinion 72 seasons is the best.
You cannot be serious 😂
🤣
WoW Metallica ,me he hecho viejita con ellos, pero no por dentro ya que sigo vibrando a tope
Why do the albums lately sound so much less lively than Black, Load/Re-Load and even MoP/Ride...The snares fall flat, vs the beefy thunderous snare of previous albums. The guitars have turned into a sort of stock sound and I can still hear some clipping a la Death Magentic. I just want to understand the technicalities and overall philosophy of these changes. I can't imagine someone listening to Black and then Hardwired or 72 seasons and coming out at the end saying the latter 2 sounded better, I just can't see it.
The lack of restraint, vision, and flood of filler is a bigger problem in my opinion.
@@phadrusThe lack of a PROPER producer!
@@mudcast precisely
Fidelman productions aren't good.
Not knocking Greg's production skills, but it seems he's more of a "yes man" to the boys. He doesn't, or at least from the albums, seem to, push or challenge them. Would love to hear another producer come in and really challenge them like Bob Rock did for the Black Album.
De chile good rock
72 сизона, это мощный,драйвовый, плотный живой альбом. Они щас лучше чем когда либо были. Звучат великолепно, сыграность улучшилась, джемс вообще молодчик, столько лет и при этом голос супер
Greg has been ok for Metallica. Hardwired was quite strong and 72 seasons had a pretty good mix.
However, Metallica need a producer to push them. 72 seasons almost reusing exact riff ideas and solos from Hardwired?? I wonder did Greg catch this or did he forget because that is an important role of the producer to monitor this stuff.
He sounds like a “yes” man, if you watch the making of videos of the records he doesn’t really critique Kirk’s soloing, I think he should produce him instead of Lars, since Lars is not a guitar player and Greg is. Lars producing Kirk on the solos sucks, and Kirk opting for “spontaneity” doesn’t work for him. He needs to push Kirk to compose and give him a homework when it comes to the solos.
@@FlipGuitarist80bingo, hope the boys see the “light”
Episode 33 & 34??? Where the hell are episodes 1-32?
Where is the “making of 72 seasons” the day that never comes it seems :(
Bring back Flemming Rasmussen
Please! They so badly need a real producer which will push them to excellence.
Metallica should release their own official IRs. That would be sick AF.

why does there like soundcheck sound different then when they play it live for ppl??
I'd love to ask Greg and Metallica this, seeing as they haven't responded to my customer service email;
*_Greg, you're listed as the guy in charge of the remastering of the Metallica back catalogue, it says so clearly on the inserts in the sleeves. So, seeing as the buck stops with you can you tell me why my vinyl version of Master Of Puppets absolutely SUCKS?? For starters, it is mastered far too low, so the turntable noise is almost as loud as the music, you have to boost your amplifier up way louder than any other record in your collection! Secondly, its been recognised for a long time that the title track from the album is markedly lower in volume than the other songs on the album, regardless of the format. On a disc that is already mastered at an incredibly low volume, this is quite unbelievable._*
*_To be advertising these as "remastered" and then presenting them in such substandard quality is shocking. I'm extremely dubious about buying any of the other vinyl reissues now simply because Master Of Puppets on vinyl is so bad, and I don't think I would risk my money without a review and trialling the disc first. Can you tell us when you plan to rectify the situation?_*
